  • Hello!
    There’s corn on the cob lures in two very different bins. One is a standard grow out bin and the other is a bin with survivors in it from the mass die off on the patio. How are the bins doing??
    Here’s the link that shows the corn on the cob migration set up video:

    A lot more survivors then we were expecting. Well done on that call.
    You surprised me again. Xxx

      They do! Quite the come back story! I’m so relieved 😅 🪱. I saw it in a few other bins too - they do NOT like that bedding they came out of the too hot bins in at all! I thought the bedding would be fine m, and it had rather recently mixed in worm chow too, but nope! Another lesson learned, taught to me by worms! 😝🪱

    Baby worms love hanging out on a corn cob! Cocoons seem to rub off on cobs too. Win win!

      Hi Sandra! They sure do! And some found a way to wiggle inside the cob! Once the bigger worms get in there the cob itself will go faster. I wonder how long it’ll take?? 🤷‍♂️🪱

    Hello all a great shoutout 🎉 to Rockinworms ( Jayne and Cameraman) for being so kind and patient with my first order of cocoons. They arrived in the best condition and a day early. Jayme is so helpful with her wealth of information and first hand knowledge.
    I look forward to all the videos. I am hooked! 🐛
    Always Looking Up. Lisa

    Hi Jayne and Cameraman, the first bin is looking great. I'm with you, yes it's very cool. The worms in the second bin, the survivors, do look a bit more active now, which is nice. Have fun, Mark : )

      I do think the whole corn on the cob thing is pretty fun! 😎🪱

    This isn’t related to this video, but wanted to pass this on in case anyone else was interested. I bought hardware cloth and made my own screens, but couldn’t find any 1/12 size and wanted to try that for making finding cocoons easier. I got some window screen to use, and it works well, I think. Beautiful fine castings go through it but not the cocoons.

      Thank you Kathleen! That’s a great tip to put out into the worm universe 🤩🤩. How did you stiffen the window screen up? Or was it already on a window frame? Or you didn’t at all and used it a different way? We want to know the details! 😝🤗👍🪱

      I made the frame with Captain Matt’s Worm People template for a sifter that fits on a mortar tray/bin, which is available on his website.
      The first 2 screens I made, though, I bought thin 2ft boards at Lowe’s and stapled the screen onto it and screwed together the boards on either side. Made a big approx 2x2 screen that fits fairly well over mortar tray but was not real cheap. About $16 for the 8 pieces of wood.

    Mornin Jayne! I had a thought (Omg, scary!!). Other than if you are selling castings, is there really any reason to separate castings from what little is left from a bin, if its just going into the garden? Its all organic matter that the garden will love, whether its been processed thru a worm or not. Your thoughts? And good golly what is it with those corn cobs that those worms just love??

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  10 днів тому +2

      Hey Katie! That’s a really good point you bring up 🤩. Worm bedding is organic material as you point out and is safe for your gardens. landscape plants, etc as are the castings. It can all go together! If it reduces work then all the better!
      I’ve been thinking about mixing pre-compost directly into some of the soil I use for my veggie pots, to reinvigorate the soil more deeply than just adding castings to the top few inches. But haven’t done it yet. I’m going to try for the fall planting season! Could be a new use for pre-compost!
      Anyway, back to your question, a small caution - plants don’t like hot composting either so the bedding/castings/new garden environment should NOT heat up - keep an eye on that until you know it’s safe. Thanks Katie! 🥰🪱

      @@RockinWorms Thats an interesting idea about adding pre compost to the garden. Im not sure how much the added cardboard would do for the garden tho. I do add aged chicken manure directly to my garden beds which I think adds a lot to the beds. Im going to set up a compost bin this week with an old dog xpen that I have, and use horse manure and grass clippings, to make compost for the beds. So I wont worry about getting out all the leftover worm bits of food and bedding when I harvest my worm bin next week. Ill just make sure to get all the worms and cocoons out. Great stuff, Jayne! Love your channel.

      @RockinWorms  10 днів тому +3

      @@katiem9644 I’m not even going to pretend I know anything about how cardboard is made or what it break down into except for lignin. I do know it’s quite high in lignin. Lignin is critical for plants! It helps with cell wall growth and plant structure.
      I don’t know for sure but as the whole point of composting is to break down materials into more basic organic matter it seems to me that composted cardboard, as part of the pre-compost mix, would make the cardboard’s lignin more bio available to plants and that would be a good thing!
      If anyone knows more about this scientifically, please add your knowledge 🤩💕🪱
      Thanks Katie for your kind words on my videos as well 🥰. Cameraman and I try our best! 😂

      @@RockinWorms This might be something to seriously look into. If adding shredded cardboard to our gardens helps our soils and plants, it could be a really cheap "use what you have" way to add yet another amendment to our gardens. At the very least I will add some to my new compost pile. I have a whole room full of boxes...I save everything...and this would make good use of some of this. Great stuff Jayne! Your videos make for great conversation.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  10 днів тому +3

      @@katiem9644 I get so much out of these conversations with everyone too! Sparks ideas like crazy!
      Gardeners have been using sheets of cardboard for weed suppression for a long time. It eventually breaks down into the soil. I will note that there’s seriously cons (as well as pros) to using cardboard this way so research needs to be done by people contemplating using it this way.
      Now using shredded cardboard that’s been run thru a composting system is an entirely different thing because it becomes an entirely different thing 🙄🤩. I think there’s some good stuff potential here. 👍🪱
