- Hi! In the previous video we set up 2 worm bins for horizontal migration using corn in the cob as the food zone lure. Let’s see how it worked at 72 hours! FYI we also talked about how newspaper can help you manage your bins 😎
Additionally the 2 bins are drying down at different speeds. Let’s see what we can do to make both these bins dry down more quickly so the casting can be harvested and the bedding refreshed.

I agree that it’s easier, faster and less stressful on the worms if we can get them to ‘bug out’ as you say prior to sifting. I’ll sift them if I have to but migration first is preferable 🤩.

@@SuperTinker41 Thank you. It was a surprise and shock to open up the totes and feel that heat wave 😳😩. In a silver lining kind of way I’ve been learning an amazing amount of information from what happened. It’s been just over a month and I’m still working my way thru it. I’m looking forward to resetting all the survivor bins (which I didn’t know I needed to do! Lesson there!) so I can get time to process and draw conclusions from all that happened. 😊🪱

We got over 10” in that rain storm. 😳. Not kidding. Major rain. We needed it though and it’s already absorbed and excess mostly drained away into the canals. It’ll help the pasture grass come back! Did you get a lot of rain too? 🪱

Hi Vicki! How have you been? I used my standard sifting set up of the 1/8” mesh sifter over the 1/12” mesh sifter. 👍
The worms certainly seem to love the corn on the cob! Let’s see how they do once the corn is gone and it’s only the cob left 😎. Thanks for watching 🪱

Tbh, unless you deep fried and then coated them in salt, I don't think it could ever be a problem for worms.😅 Wrapping the corn cobs in paper towel or the like would be enough the microbes will eat that oily stuff before the worms even bother getting to it. ;)
I've got some expired bits of (rather oily) tofu and fish cake, I'll try it on my worms and tell you how they feel about it. (I'm pretty confident they'll love it ;))

I’d love to hear how that experiment goes! Staying away from oily substances is worm canon … but I’ve already found canon isn’t always true 🙄.
No one is suggesting dousing a bin in vegetable oil but a little here and there might not be an issue, especially in mature bin ecosystems with plenty of space for the worms to act in their own good time as you say 🪱👍😎

The radish pods are dry now and I have to collect them - a new exciting thing for me to try!

@@RockinWorms thanks for the suggestion I have a lot of radish seeds and leaves. I do have a problem getting the cocoons to hatch. Any suggestions. mine are inside bins
@@user-pj7jt4tb1r Cocoons hatch when they hatch. We can’t control it but we can give them the best environment to encourage cocoon development and hatching. That environment includes very moist bedding (moist, not drippy wet), warm bedding (75F minimum and closer to 80F), and if you can, a few nanny worms (any hatched worm works to stimulate the bedding and let the wisps know it’s safe to hatch). Of all of these things, the warmer bedding will have the most positive effect.

Thiamin’s the first time I’m feeding corn on the cob to my worms. I am interested myself to see how long it takes them to eat the cobs - the corn will go quick I bet.
Generally speaking cooked foods and frozen foods go much faster than raw foods. I expect that holds true for corn as well. Cooking and/or freezing foods breaks the cell walls. This allows biota to get inside faster and start breaking the food down into smaller particles. The magic of composting!! 👍🪱😎
Hi Jayne, I just watched your cocoon video that a viewer asked for below. I'm making pre-compost because I sifted my outside huge compost / vermicompost bins to take out the cocoons. Hi! Welcome! I’m only shipping cocoons right now due to the heat. I have one species - eisenia, which includes the subspecies fetida (red wigglers) and hortensia (euros). There’s the andrei subspecies too. I can not reliably tell one subspecies from the other for selling purposes. Only DNA testing can tell for sure and that kills the specific worm and doesn’t tell you what the next worm is! So to be on the safe side I call all my worms red wigglers. I do not have any other species, no blues, no ANCs. 🪱
