While he didn’t physically win the fight, Brook’s initial duel with Big Mum in the vault is truly iconic to me. Utterly unafraid even though he knows he cannot beat her physically. And even though he lost the fight and was captured he accomplished his true goal in copying the ponegliph. Throughout whole cake he used his intelligence to subvert a ludicrously strong opponent and win the day. While Luffy/Sanji/Nami had some incredible emotional beats throughout the arc, Brook is the real MVP of Whole Cake.
Brooks mvp status wasnt ever even guestionable in my mind.
I’m paused at 5:15 just to look for this comment lol. There’s no way you’re going to tell me Brook didn’t turn up and go crazy during Whole Cake Island. He was CLUTCH. The mission with Pedro, the standing his ground to Big Mom, the actually clutch-ness-ity (lol) of stealing the rubbing, to even running on water during the escape….Brook stock was very high.

Brook is as Liam would say criminally underrated. He is one of my absolute favorite Straw hats. He is always so cheerful and loyal

For me he isn’t one of my favorites HE IS MY FAVORITE
I’m especially fascinated by the rare occasions when Brook’s cheery façade cracks and we truly see the cold and resentful anger underneath… Props to to his voice actor, his delivery on these scenes never fails to break my heart.
I’m so glad the anime added that scene where Black Maria’s lackeys pretend to be the Rumbar Pirates.
"I'm in pain and....it breaks my heart." One of the coldest line Brook ever said as he cuts down the illusion of the Rumbar pirates will always be my favorite moment.

First we're left to wonder what Franky was going to ask, then we later come back and we see Franky and Robin running somewhere while Franky is denying the tears streaming down his face, saying he now loves Brook and that isn't anyone as good as him and *Robin* agrees. Then we wait until Franky and Robin rendezvous with the rest of the straw hats - and it's finally here we learn that Brook was part of the crew Laboon is waiting for. The rest of the crew is shocked to find out who Brook is, Franky & Robin are shocked to find out that Laboon actually exists - and the readers are shocked at Oda being this good.
Incredible storytelling.
There is a scene, after Brook is separated from them and arrives on the island. He says something like, “Luffy you made those 50 years worth it” I love that line even after being alone for so long AND being separated from his new crew Brook still thinks of the positive. I don’t think he’s ever said anything that’s toxically positive.
I remember there was a filler episode after Thriller Bark, and Brook wonders if he can truly be useful to the crew. Then he plays his music and it brought joy to the the entire crew.
My favorite one piece filler episode. It’s as good as canon to me

When you bring up the point of how Brook is always there to be the support, and how he can blend in with pretty much any group but never takes the lead on his own, I think you really hit the nail on the head. Remember what Brook said right before he died: As the rest of the Rumbar Pirates died and Brook was at last left alone, his final words were "It isn't right... leaving just the accompaniment." Brook knows he's at his best when supporting those around him.

People always think I am weird because Brook is my favorites strawhat, I love how he can fit in any situation, he is quite literally a mega star in the one piece world and I think he does perversion right, unlike Snaji. I love his backstory and he never fails to make me laugh. He also has one of the greatest quotes in the series being of course " Young lady, what kind of idiot draws up plans with the expectation of dying?". I find it interesting that he came from thriller bark and although it doesn't stack up to the other goat arcs, its still such a great arc.
Personally love That arc because it has Zoro truly earn his 3rd blade...

His underrated dynamic was with Pedro. Considering the situation with Big Mom, Pedro was in the same age range as Brook and they had a really cool relationship.
Pretty sure brook is a decade kr two older tban pedro. Since pedro was a kid when roger was in bis prime, but brook was a pirate as roger was starting.

Brook bkg really is in the dark. We need a brook backstory deep dive since we know next to nothing (homeland, why he became a pirate, why he learned music, why swordsmanship, etc.) Can’t help but feel like Oda is hiding something from us in plain sight

Robin and Brook have always been my favorite straw hats. Their backstories were always the best. Brook I such an important character to me because he has been through so much,leaving Laboon, watching his friends die, dying HIMSELF, but he is still always just the happiest straw hat, the opposite of what you’d think a dead guy would be.
I think part of why Brook is undervalued is that Sabaody happened the arc after he joined, so he only had one arc to settle into the crew dynamic before they were all split up.
Brook has such a wonderful duality to him. He is a world famous musician who himself was
Once a captain, yet he knows how to be the perfect support party member, a great accompaniment to any act. Brook has no ego despite being probably among the most deserving of one.
Brook singing binks sake with a the rumbar pirates as they pass away one by one is one of my favorite one piece scenes. To me that last Binks Sake exemplifies the human spirit and hits almost as hard as Nami, Robin, and now Bonney/kuma's backstory

I dunno that Brook had no cost... had to get his shadow back after all. I mean, Robin was even easier because she just showed up and said she was part of the crew, but if you count Enies Lobby against her, you have to hold Thriller Bark against Brook.
I think the point was that unlike the other Straw Hats, who initially said no but then after plot changed their minds, Brook was on board right away. There was just that matter of his shadow that had to be resolved first.
In this regard Jinbe is the same, as he also was quite on board right away but he also had unfinished business to clear up first.
Brook, at that point, was such an asset that his acquisition came with its own special quest of defeating a warlord. It really played out like a video game where you unlock a special quest to acquire a new special something.
There were a few moments after Thriller Bark, where Brook plays music on the sunny and everyone just stops and listens. Those are really beautiful, especially in the anime (cause Binks sake just slaps). Perfectly show the importance of a musician in a very understated way. It´s just sad that we dont get more of these (although understandable, there´s just too much going on in the story, especially post-ts)
Thing is there is still travel time from island to island. So there is time to do solid character interractions in between
ive always been a brook supporter ever since his introduction due to his design, a skeleton with an afro is so unbelievably cool to me and he was so lovable and had such a tragic past

But he’s so humble and so nice, that he just doesn’t use his power fully unless he truly needs to.
Brooke basically “doesn’t need to show off” he knows who he is and doesn’t need to prove it to anyone.

I understand what you're saying about Brook not needing a fight to join the crew, and this leads to us underestimating his importance, but Brook's backstory with Laboon is one of my favorites, not to mention Bink's Sake. I really love this song a lot!! I remember when I first heard it, with all of Brook's old crewmates singing it, and then the Straw Hats joining in when the old crew members, one by one, are dying. I was crying so much! (and I don't cry very easily). So, thanks for making this video and pointing out his significance! PS: I would love it if Bink's sake turned out to be the story of Joy Boy!!

Brook does prove to be surprisingly useful in a fight as well as carrying out solo operations
Brook may be underrated by the most of the fanbase but I personally love Brook, he's my fav character in all of fiction, I relate to his lonelyness, he's an artist like me and to add to his awesomeness his unbreaking spirit and loyalty is truly admireable
He wears his heart on his sleeve (maybe because he doesn't have any inside of him yohohoho), and he is just glad to be alive after so many years of hardship, when he needs to be he is a true MVP
And he is the best skeleton I've ever knew
Brook has always played my heartstrings in a way that no other character has. This man is a legend like the eccentric grandpa we didn't know we needed around.
I know its not canon, but Brook taking out all the strong bugs in Strong World cemented Brook as a total badass. Especially showing the confidence that Robin and Franky had in him for that, speaks volumes for how he'a viewed by the crew. I love Brook. Lol
I feel like there's gonna be a Life of Brook flashback at some point. He's the only Straw Hat with a significant and obvious gap in his backstory, and given how long ago it happened it could tie into other lore stuff.
2:43 This strikes me as hilarious, because Nami saw her mother get murdered, made a deal with her murderer to save her hometown, and then effectively lived as Arlong's slave for 10 years. She has been free of the weight of her situation for a couple months at most at that point in the story.

Brook doesn't give a flap about death. And he's very, VERY STRONG. Man has this panel in Egghead. Kizaru's here, and he literally unsheathes his sword and points it at kizaru's head RIGHT AWAY when he pops in. HUGE REFLEXES there.
“Soul King” Brook is my favorite out of the Straw Hats like that I cry when seeing his tragic backstory (which I think that we need more about him before he was part of the Rumbar Pirates & when united with Laboon I will be balling my eyes out), love both his voice actors Cho / Ian Sinclair, & laugh at all of his Skull Jokes no matter how boneheaded 💀 they sound -YOHOHOHO!!!
Finally someone touches on the “certain kingdom” panel! Brook been my favorite he’s gonna be from some legendary place and all he will say is “oh yeah I’m from____ what of it?”
Fully agree that Brook doesn't get enough love. He's always been among my favorite Straw Hats, beaten only by Jinbei and Nami.

Crazy that Brook knew the strawhats for like a week got seperated and became extremely succesfull rockstar and still only built it up to rejoin them 2 years later.
Funny enough, Sanji's pervert gag has helped the Straw Hats on a couple occasions!
1. During Punk Hazard when Nami and him had swapped bodies, they were running away from the deadly gas that was about to kill them until he squeezed Nami's breast and was able to run at the speed of sound.
2. During Dressrosa, his interaction with Viola. (specifically the time she used her mind reading power on him). She peered into his mind and saw just how foul his imagination was and SOMEHOW realized he could be trusted enough to betray Doflamingo which ended up allowing him to get back to the ship to save the crew momentarily from Doflamingo.

We are long overdue a Brook-focused character arc and I have the feeling that it will either never come, or be a vital part of the story's last stretch.
Why would he have one? Almost all of his peers are dead or retired..

@@pablobuquet2534 So far as we know. There could still be relatives alive that even he doesn't know about. And there's a TON about him we don't know. Why'd he eat the devil fruit? By choice, accident or was he forced by the higher ups to do it for some unknown purpose? It IS strategically valuable to have a person in your command that can survive death, if only once. That's still one more than most. He worked for "a kingdom". Which one? Why did he become a pirate? Were the Rumbars inspiring people with Binks Sake and it got them blacklisted as pirates by the government? Musicians HAVE historically been branded as dangerous and radical by tyrannical leaderships due to the power music very much has in informing and inspiring people to mobilize. There's a LOT to expand upon there. Brook is also not officially confirmed to have awakened his devil fruit. It's possible he HAS but Oda hasn't stated. I personally think it would be RAD if he goes full Lich, he's already got the sword and the ice magic, why not raise the dead? That way too, in the end maybe he can summon the spirits of his dead crewmates to be there with him when he finally gets to Laboon.

Brook's stands against enemies, regardless of them dwarfing him in power or not, are some of my favorite fight scenes, hands down.

Brook has always been one of my top 3 favorite characters, he heavily reminds me of my grandpa mainly for still being in touch with his inner child. My grandpa back when I was a kid used to climb trees and have all of the kids go look for him late at night he'd climb trees, hide under cars and wear a skeleton mask was always really fun sadly he's injured now, and getting to old to do all that so my younger cousins will not experience but it's that still in touch with his inner child like I like and see in brook and is why he's my favorite character

Most of the strawhats have a sad backstory but the one that made me cry was Brooks. Man the rumbar pirates singing binks crew for the last time while collapsing and brook knowing that he may be only one who will make it out alive and give spending such a long time alone, truly and underappreciated story

I always like undead characters. Ghosts, Skeletons, Zombies - all that stuff. So Brook was an instant favourite of mine.
Having a party across the whole world with Brook and Uta as the musical number, Uta wanted to change the world with music so a duo concert with the two would be fitting.
Brook is among my favorite strawhats. He had some amazing moments in Whole Cake and Wano, I hope Oda gives him more time to shine soon.
Whole cake island was definitely when Brook got a big boost for me and became more of a favorite but with your video, he got a huge boost and moved up even more in my list
I know its not canon but now i think that the reason luffy always said he needed a musician first was because he grew up with Uta and saw the joy her singing caused in the crew and that was what he was going for. Eat and sing, what he enjoyed as a child with shanks pirate crew so those were always the most important part.
I still have a feeling that Brook is gonna be key to defeating Blackbeard too: I think he's gonna awaken his devil fruit powers during that fight.
Brooke has been one of my favourite characters since he was introduced, pretty funny throughout but with a depth. The party at the end of thriller bark gets me really emotional, especially the countdown as he goes from a quartet, to a trio, to a duo, and finally the solo that lasted 50 years. I think the most interesting thing about Brooke is what's left unsaid, his time before becoming a pirate has the potential for a groundbreaking reveal late in the story, I love your theory about him being the final key (skeleton key, Yohoho) Although it may not have anything to do with music, he may simply recognize where they are on Laughtale, and know the way.
I admit his cookieness is likely just a holdover from 50 years in isolation, but I've always had a theory that we're not really seeing his true personality until his few serious moments, and I believe he has repressed memories.

When I used to get kind of burned out by one piece the first time I watched it, I used to see his picture on Wikipedia and the internet and I would get really excited again. He’s one of my favorite characters! Rockstar, check. Lightning fast sword fighting, check. Skeleton that looks like a British slash, check. Humor, double check.

Brook’s connection to the underworld really gets my imagination going, that is an open door for Goda. He can take that in any direction he likes. I really hope it becomes relevant towards the end of the story, Brook deserves some spotlight

Ive had a head canon idea that brook will be extremely important later on in the story, i believe that brook can awaken his DF and be able to temporarily revive other people from the underworld if he has a vessel or that individuals original body available and if this does come true it will most likely be used to revive joyboy to have joyboy deliver the backstory of the void century himself as well and maybe even revive some other characters for the final war like ace and whitebeard. Now you might ask what good would reviving characters that dont have their powers anymore would do and i’ll say that vegapunk will be a greater ally of the strawhats and could fit these characters with DF powers via the seraphim green blood plus characters like white beard are already insanely powerful on their own without DF powers due to their tremendous haki and raw physical strength

Touching moment when seeing a filler episode that tell how Brook managed to be straw hat in his first day being crew. He screw led everyone, but at the end, he managed to be himself and acting as embracer to other crew by singing.
I remember seeing images of brook when I started the anime and thinking “idk this design idk if I like it” but I fell in love with his character immediately. And seeing his unwavering pride and belief in puffy and the straw hats has been incredibly endearing. Easily one of the most underrated straw hats.
You have broadened my view of Brook. With a single view you have moved Brook into one of my favorite characters. Truly an underrated character. You can even say I was DEAD wrong about my perception of the value he brought to the crew. Yo-ho-ho-ho.
