Nice video as always and congrats on your custom bind haul Mike! I was particularly impressed with the the oversized Black Label anthology books as I've only done standard size comics with Lehmann!!! 2 stupid questions: 1) Is there a difference in quality when binding singles vs TPBs (and is one preferable?) 2) How do customs feel quality wise to an official omnibus?
Not stupid at all!
I will say binding singles seems to result in a better build and consistency in the bind, at least in my experience. Taking apart TPBs leaves glue on one edge of the paper that can cause misalignment during binding. That being said... trades have no ads, so you get pure comic goodness throughout, and can likely add more pages as well.
Quality depends on where you go, but I’ve held Houchen, Lehmann, and Herring and Robinson books, and all of them have felt sturdy, easy to read, and almost all of them stay open without you holding them down from the very first page. Again, these are just my experiences, and binderies are subject to quality changes over the years. I can very safely say that most binds are better quality than the horrific omnis DC puts out

Hey Mike. Very cool, bro. I'm excited ur excited! Those look nice. I've been meaning to take a closer look @ "Godshaper" & that "The Question" Black Label book. Obviously, u really like them; but so far as the Question book goes, does it require any prior knowledge of the character? I know "Black Label" books aren't part of the regular DC canon, & are essentially stand-alone books that take place in their own workd- kind of like the old "Elseworlds" stories used to. I was just wondering if a reader still needs to have some working knowledge of the character & his background(his origin, personality, powers, etc) to understand & really enjoy the book. In your opinion, can someone understand & enjoy the book, if going into it w/virtually no knowledge of the character? Thanx, my man! Hope u guys & ur fams are staying as safe & healthy as possible!😊👍🏻👍🏻❤

I absolutely will make dust jackets! I do my printing in bulk to save on shipping costs (each DJ adds pennies to the price)

How and where do you print you dust jackets? Will you do some for these books?
I will definitely make dust jackets for these! Houchenbindery.com is the best place to go if you’re in the US. Outside the US I recommend taking an official dust jacket and telling a local printer that is the kind of quality you would like

Never had a book custom bound I would like to get my spawn compendium custom bound but I have no clue who to go to for this any recommendations

Did you use single issues or the trades for the custom bound Doom Patrol?
Single issues for the Doom Patrol and Doom Patrol Weight of the Worlds, tpb for milk wars!
I assume these were originally glued (not sewn) and you had them sewn?
Most of these were made from single issues, so all were essentially loose pieces of paper after staple and ad removal. All the binds were done with DFAB glue!
Have you read the Motherless Oven trilogy? Would those tpbs be too small for a hardcover bind? Would love to do a graphic design on the cover as well.
I have not read those! How many pages is it? My thinnest bind is around 180 pages
@@TheHardcoverComic I was talking more about the dims of the books. I think they are a little smaller than standard floppy size. Amazon shows 6.88 x 0.63 x 9.63 inches. There are three books total I think about 160-200 pages each. If you haven't read that series you should definitely check it out. I would for sure put it in my top 5.
@@bricebynum4397 Ooooh I see! I don’t think that would be a problem - I just sent in manga volumes to bind and that was no problem! Might depend on your bindery though
Is custom more expensive?
It costs about $25 per book, not including the comics. If you can get the comics for very cheap, it is usually cheaper than buying an official omnibus!
Do you have them trim the edges?
I do request it, but Lehmann will not trim the edges if it will cause loss of reading material on the page
Wheres the planetes custom bind?
