I’m glad twitch is treating you well :) but I have to say, you really don’t have to overthink your UA-cam vids. You could talk about anything you want with no editing or grand plan and I’m sure everyone would tune in.

Hey Pete, I doubt you'll see this comment as the video has been out for a while, but I recommend buying custom cases if you're going cart-only. Since I only started collecting about a year ago, I had virtually no CIB cart games, so the daunting and costly task of tracking down my favorites all CIB and in good condition was just not worth it. I was a bit hesitant about getting the custom cases at first, but man was it a great decision.
I bought cases for all of my Gameboy/GBA (these are great as the cases are DS-sized, so all of my Nintendo handheld games are nice and uniform), SNES, and N64 games as well as all of those I ever planned on owning (since shipping to Canada was expensive and it'd be free if I bought enough), which came to about $4 CAD per case with free shipping. Now I no longer worry about how to display cart games as the cases display very nicely on a shelf, just like disc-based games, and the vast majority of the cases I got were quality, quite close to the originals. Unless you already have a substantive amount of CIB games for a console or are filthy rich, I don't see why you wouldn't choose this alternative, since it's cheaper, looks almost as good, and the cases are more durable. Now I only collect CIB for disc-based games and my Zelda collection, and see no reason to look back as it makes collecting much more enjoyable.

Pete, you probably won't see this comment, but I just want you know that you're my favorite VG UA-camr. Your passion for gaming, and the way you speak is just so relaxing and soothing to listen to. I still go back to your old videos to watch when I've had a stressful day. As someone who lives in the UK I am unfortunate to never catch your twitch streams, so seeing a new video pop up is like a present for me. Good to see you back in whatever form. You have been greatly missed, at least by me. x

Great to have you back! Listening to you talk about topics such as these definitely resonates with me as an old-school gamer when I used to own CIB games for NES/SNES/etc. I definitely see the appeal in appreciating the box art and reading about the game on the back and looking at the few pics to help tell you a little bit about the game. Look forward to more vids from you!

Glad to see your back and well Pete. I have had some times in my life where I've been burnt out on games and did other things to enjoy this one life we get. I gamed from 1990 to about 2004 and stopped heavy gaming for a few years. In 2006 i started gaming again every day and took another break from daily gaming recently. I don't see a problem with gaming only if it becomes an addiction that stops people from seeing their family, friends and significant other, keeps one from holding down a job. Gaming for me is an escape from the stresses of every day life for a few hours. I don't have as much time to game now because of the hours my job requires.
My first experience with Zombies Ate my Neighbors was on the SNES at a baby sitters house in the early 90's. Played co-op with the baby sitters son and other kids that she looked after. I played Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3 Super Mario World there too. The 90's was a very good year for video games a lot of good games came out then.
Ive never been into collecting lots of games since i don't have the space now. This little room i live in is full of movies,CD's, records and CIB retro and modern video games.
Great video. All your videos are packed full of information about great games and your personal connection with the games.

Pete, I've been watching your videos since 2008, and that special "it" interest factor that you put into your videos that is wholly and uniquely you is still very much there.
I'm completely understanding of being away from UA-cam because as an adult, it's very difficult to manage your time and juggle everything, especially if your efforts are going towards another full time job (in your case, Twitch streams).
But please do keep making these kinds of videos and don't give up on UA-cam completely, even if you don't upload on a regular schedule anymore because I really really enjoyed this video. The things that you mention as a collector about box art, or even the auditory quality of sifting through games, I can completely relate to. And I just feel like these sorts of discussions that are on this video are not really talked about as much on other channels.
Love your videos! Keep up the good work. :)

Growing up I would always see your videos (been around for a decade, I was 13 I made your Facebook fan club if you remember lolll) I’m in my 20’s now and I’ve built up a collection of my own, and I have come to the same conclusions you have seem to come to as far as the need for sentimentality from games, and realizing why things are important to you. I think I’m gonna join you on twitch! Can’t wait to see what that looks like

Hey Pete, it's great to see you're back. I've been subscribed since 2011. Yours was the second channel I ever subscribed to, back when I started my UA-cam account. It was also thanks to your channel where my love and passion for videogames resurfaced and grew up. I wouldn't be as obsessed as I am with gaming and gaming history were it not for your channel.
Your channel was also a great way for me to find out how gaming and game collecting have been experienced in a more developed country. It was quite an experience to compare your experience with mine. (I'm from Costa Rica BTW. Very different gaming environment. Very different conditions)
Anyway, good to see you back. Don't feel obligated to create videos on a regular basis as you used to, but don't forget about us.

I also love my stuff CIB, although I've become extremely picky since some of the stuff I want out there is getting stupidly expensive. As a side note, when you were talking about the little things that previous owners leave behind in games they sold, I once got a nice lot of sega genesis/CD games and one of them was a D&D game that had hand drawn maps on grid paper.. it was extremely intricate stuff and I could only imagine the hours of love put into that game. Things like this make me love collecting CIB aswell.

Many of my SNES and Genesis game are not CIB because CIB games for those systems are so expensive. I would love to collect them CIB but with two kids to support I just can't afford many of them. My disk based games are CIB though. I love collecting the disk based games CIB since it is way cheaper to do so. Great video Pete and again glad to have you back on UA-cam!! you, Gamester81, HappyConsoleGamer, and KNIGHTWING01 are why I started my own channel. Now I get to watch so many other gaming channels like MetalJesusRocks, John Hancock, Kelsey Lewin, and Kinzilla because they were inspired by many of you. I understand the collecting part and I too grew up in the 90's. It was an experience. I remember being punished and my parents said no tv no nintendo, I would read the manual instead and use my imagination to develop a deeper appreciation for the game. I also like how you make videos like this showcasing your passion for video games because sometimes when I go to vg conventions, which I have met you before, some people are just following the collectablity trend and not an attachment toward the game.

  • @The_MechaGojira

I think ya just helped give me a better understanding about why I collect the way I do!
I grew up with my SNES being a hand me down from my older brother who lived on his own, and had just had bought a PS2. I NVR really got to see all these awesome box arts, or screen caps on the back. I flipped through the racks of old used SNES games at Funcoland, with only the Label to go By!
Which going by your point of view explains quite a bit about why I generally want my games cart only, only care about that label art being in good condition, and why I enjoy the history of there being a rental sticker on my carts.
Now the next thing is you talk about how your love of slasher flicks influences your collection.
This is a subject I was more aware about when It comes to what I collect! I love Scifi Monster Movies, and the esthetic of retro space suits, and toys. I have believed for quite awhile now that is a huge influence when it comes to my love of the Metroid series. That sense of isolation in a hostel environment, and the general esthetic of Samus' power suits, the alien creatures, and various environments.
Metroid has become the only series I collect CIB when it comes to retro cartridge based games.
Which brings me to another subject you touched on. I love seeing the history of these boxes, the shelf wear, that ripped off tab, that ding, or dent. It all gives the game all the more sense if history for me. My Metroid II box is pretty much near mint, and honestly it really does not give me the same sense of awe, or intrigue looking it over, and flipping through the manual that I get looking over my old beat up yellow box Metroid nes, and flipping through its pages where the original owner wrote down passwords in the notes section. There is just something so much more satisfying about that copy with history to it, that did not just sit in a closet for 30 years untouched!

21 minutes of ear candy. Good to see you back on YT with back-to-back videos
I totally agree with your points here, quality over quantity in collecting, the sentimental value of a box and what it adds to a game, the commitment to a game when it's a selected purchase vs. a lot pick-up.

I think you made some good points here, Pete. They definitely had that "VHS cover" feel to them. Going back home on the bus looking at the back, or instructions was so exciting! Even when I was a kid I really looked after my games - I still have my Sega Mega-Drive games CIB. I'm trying to do an A-Z video series on the Genesis/Mega-Drive, and let me tell you, it's not gonna be cheap. All because I want to focus on the box, and instructions as part of my videos. I feel like it's a key part of the game experience!

  • @MilaMarieRose
    @MilaMarieRose 6 років тому

Nostalgia is good for you. We don't have long on this earth and our happy memories are so important to keep a hold of.
I look at CIB collecting the same way I assume record collectors feel about their record collections. These packages are pieces of art history and it makes complete sense to cherish these things.
If we only knew what we were doing when we were throwing all our boxes away. I give a lot of credit to Sega for realizing that these things should be more tangible and making Genesis boxes plastic. Too bad they messed it up in the mid 90s and went back to boxes.
Really enjoyed the video and you have earned a new subscriber.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who appreciates video game box art, especially classic video game box art. super nintendo boxes are my absolute favorite! i love the black boxes, the layout with the logo and graphics, and some games just had awesome box art, and they fit in with the design of the snes box so well. now the problem i have is money. i simply just don't have enough money to buy games complete in box. i don't have enough money to buy that many games anyway, so i usually settle for cart only with older games. there are some i wish i did have complete in box, though. the one game is Super Castlevania IV. my all-time favorite game and i only have the cart right now. one day i'd like to have it complete in box, and maaaan i love the box art for that game!
another thing, i've gotten the comments from people about things taking up shelf space. maybe so, but there's LOTS of sentimental value for me when it comes to this stuff. it's also why i prefer physical over digital. i like having the actual game, the actual box, an instruction manual, the complete package. it means a lot more to me than just a copy of a file saved on a hard drive. that also goes for movies and music, too. people who say digital media is the way to go just don't understand collecting physical the way we do.

I don't buy many games these days, retro or otherwise. I even sold a good chunk of my collection. But when I do buy retro, I buy complete in box. It's pricier, but I'm far more selective so it's not very hard on the bank account. And, like you, I enjoy the aesthetic qualities of complete games.

Awesome video man. I could tell you enjoyed making this one and everything was very honest and sincere. Quick question if you have time. I remember on an allgen gamers podcast you said you were very disappointed in this generation of consoles. With all the recent great games on the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch has your opinion changed? I hope you continue to enjoy making videos

That Splatterhouse tho.. and I agree, the games feel so much more exciting to dive into when you have the full package in most cases, especially over just picking a game from a list or a flashback / classic unit setup.

CIB is always awesome to find when it's a used game, be it from gamestop or goodwill. It feels so good to know that another gamer somewhere also liked collecting, and kept it in such a good condition
