      Thanks, I might try heating the metal up enough to add a twist!

      No problem, It took a bit of trial and error to get the lip to properly grab. Not sure if you read the video description but this one was not as good as it could have been, it should be a bit more hooked.

    Great project. Ive made a few of these in the past but never thought to drill a hole first. That would have saved alot of time. lol.

      @heyimamaker  6 років тому +2

      Lol, I ruined a few drilling the hole first though. But It keeps the end nice and clean if you can keep the angle grinder away from it.

      I can't recommend that you walk along some train tracks as that is trespassing and un-safe... But they should not be too hard to find :)

    @Hey i'am a maker could you please explain why you blowtorched the spike

    • @DoubleWhistle
      @DoubleWhistle 6 років тому +1

      So that he could apply the beeswax finish.

    • @heyimamaker
      @heyimamaker  6 років тому +5

      Realistically you don't have to, but I used the torch so that the wax would melt and create a protective coating and a nice patina. I also wanted the colour change to take place.
      If you wanted to keep it silver then you could use a furniture polish or a spray on clear coat.

      cool, thanks

    How do you apply the beeswax?

    • @heyimamaker
      @heyimamaker  6 років тому +2

      I heated the spike up to the point hwere it started to turn straw coloured and then applied the wax.
      It will make a lot of smoke but once the spike cools the wax forms a hard protective coating.

    What kind of bit and cutoff wheel did you use to get through the spike

    • @heyimamaker
      @heyimamaker  3 роки тому

      The bit was nothing special, just a generic bit. The cutoff wheel I think was a Norton cutoff wheel. The spikes are not actually that hard.

      Most spikes have hc on the top for higher carbon which means it's soft and not hard to bend or shape and drill through

    What kind of drill did you use? I’m burning up drills quickly

    • @heyimamaker

      It was basically a big box store brand, in Canada it's called Master Craft from Canadian Tire.

    • @heyimamaker

      It was probably dead after drilling that hole though 😁

    Nice video! I like the beeswax finish process, because when doesn't a torch make things better?

    • @heyimamaker
      @heyimamaker  6 років тому +1

      Exactly! Fire makes all things better.

    Too much heat just to melt beeswax. I burnt off with that kinda heat. Just my thoughts! Cool projectt.

    • @heyimamaker
      @heyimamaker  3 місяці тому

      The wax is supposed to burn, not sure about the correct amount of heat though.
      I think It's how they make blackened iron in Europe.
