  • I've been wanting to make this Coat Rack using Railroad Spikes and a Wine Barrel Stave for a long time. I learned how to bend a spike without heat by cutting slots about 3/4 the way through a spike then hammering it to bend. I thought a bent railroad spike would workout great for a Coat Rack, and what about a wine Barrel Stave..... Cool! So I went for it. At first I was going to paint them black until I saw Chris's video from MakeEverything. He use Black Magic Patina from Sculpt Nouveau (link below). I used it and I have to tell you that this is a great product for blackening metal. I was really impressed! It made the Coat Rack look even better. I will be using it in the future on other projects for sure. I'm also glad that I used a wine barrel stave for the Coat Rack because the stave and spikes really go well together. I also have to say that using Pferd Curve Disc(Link Below) for the grinder was a pleasure. They really work great!
So I hope you enjoy the Coat Rack video and how to bend a railroad spike. I got to get the welder out , which is always fun to do. Give it a try for yourself and remember be careful and Safe at all times.

The Pferd disc is call the curve and it’s ceramic . Great disc .! I live in Robeson county and was the first to use those before they went on the market. They are mainly used for hand rails to clean the welds in the tight welds. They’re not meant for flat grinding but you can. I can certainly get you the correct flapper disc. I forgot to tell mention I have worked in the welding industry for 42 years and I was the first distributor in the Carolinas to sell them.

@@TheMuzShop I wasn’t trying to be a SA by no means , wood should be a alum oxide because the grit isn’t as aggressive as ceramic or zinc. I use two different companies for my customers Weldcote and WCG out of the Charlotte NC area. Pferd was actually the first company to have the flapper disc or Polifan as it’s known buy. It’s great but too expensive for me. Weldcote is new in the abrasive business but they are kicking butt. I can always get some samples if you ever need some

@@joeyricker1039 I don't think you are being a SA at all.... I really appreciate it when someone passes along good information. I'm pretty well stocked right now but email me some info on what you have themuzshop@gmail.com.

Very cool project, I made one a while back by cutting the spikes at about 3" and then drilled and tapped the ends. I like yours a little better , the stave really adds another depth. Can I ask what type/brand cutting disc you use?? like the tip about the mag switch holder.

Thanks and that sounds like a pretty cool project you made... The cutting disc is a Bosch used on my Bosch Xlock grinder.

Really cool aesthetic. No detail left unturned (e.g. blackened screw tips) when it comes to jobs taken on by MUZ Shop. Gotham City is safe with Shop Dog Bruno. Bam, pow!

you dont think the coats will catch on the spike ends that are sticking up ? maybe flush or below the top edge ?

Nice project! Never heard of Black Magic before. I assume it is Cold black oxide finish. If you want a fun finish, try a hot oil finish. You can achieve rainbow type effect by heating the metal in areas and dipping in oil. It turns out nice for certain projects.

That disc grinder seems like a risky business! How many spikes did you cut all the way through?!?

I’ve got a project where I’m contemplating using railroad spikes, (building something for my wedding a month away) and I will have to cut and weld 3 railroad spikes. I do have an angled ringer that I can try to cut them with, but what do you suggest is the best for cutting them? I am very new to metal working, having only been shown a few things from my dad, and I am primarily a wood worker, but I do need metal for this project and I would like to expand my knowledge base and experience. Thank you, Christopher

Congratulations on you Wedding. If you are talking about what type of wheel for the grinder, I like Pferd wheels amzn.to/3oxjDQ6. But any thin cut off wheel should work fine.. Have fun!
