SNOWDONIA - IDWAL BUTTRESS and Continuation Scramble to Glyder Fawr. No1 of a series

  • After SO MANY cancelled trips due to the poor weather and storms. I headed up to do a solo trip. Needed to get up a mountain!
Although I've been up all the Idwal scrambles before, Id never done it solo. And I'd not filmed properly. So this was the ideal time to get that sorted.
The path from the car park quickly gets you up into The Idwal valley past the beautiful lake.
Opting for the right Buttress variation up the crest of the rocky nose, and not the dark watercourse on the left. I climbed up trending right at the middle ledges through the large quartz band onto the ridge.
Then its up to Glyder Fawr on easy ground.
THIS WAS ORIGINALLY POSTED AS THE STAIRCASE. That's the watercourse on the left of this route. . . to be done soon. 👍
    Please like and Subscribe.
    ps. Disclaimer.....
Scrambling can be dangerous. Don't climb without a helmet. Don't climb above your ability.
This film, and all my others are a documentary of my trip. they are NOT a how too or instructional, but a record of my day.
    Always grateful for any feedback.
Enjoy the hills and stay safe!

Oh that was lovely thanks John. It brought back a lot of memories of my youth. I was up there a lot in the 60's and 70's. Been up the slabs a few times and Holly Tree Wall but I've never done the Staircase. I did climb Y Gribin once, the way you came down but I used to love those rare quiet days when there was no-one about.

Thanks very much. It's great to get any comments. Not done too many films in Wales yet, although I've done many routes. Please check out any other videos. It's been real fun making them. I hope to continue! Take care

Thanks Dave. Yup. It was a lovely still day with few people. And the route would be fine with a pack. It may look it, but it's rarely steep. 👌👌👌

aw thanks mate....its definitely not my best. but thanks for the feedback. This one is less scenic and more scramble.....I thought less watchable for random viewers, so thanks

Great filming. My daughter and I just did the Devil's Kitchen as a bit of a progression from earlier trips to easier routes on Snowdon. We also did the Snowdon sun rise walk via the Pyg track, which included a 5am torch lit start from the car park. I can't recommend this highly enough, great fun and you really have most of the track to yourself, you can just make out other teams lights a kilometre away. We picked the day for the weather and the sunrise was stunning!!

Love that route and you get some great drone shots. I normally bear left at the halfway stage and then go up and over into Cwm Cneifion to climb that route - the 'Idwal Triple' I think they call it - but when I'm there next (Easter I hope) I'll do the route you did in this vid. The rock is so solid and so grippy, such a joy to climb on

It's a 2...... Although from a distance it looks an intimidating face. The rock is perfect and dries fast. I've done it in all weathers. There are unlimited variations. From the path, You can start up the watercourse on the left of the little ridge. Or up it as I did here. The first 30 m are probably the steepest but pretty technically easy. Again, you can make it as easy as you need.....Once to the grassy middle, trend right, through the quartz then up to the dip in the skyline. I've been up maybe 10 times. Always love it. Mostly because you can scramble free and go your own way.....thanks for your comments. Always nice to hear feedback 👍😜

The guide I used said they were both. With two possibilities of start. One up the watercourse to the left. And one up the arete to the right. They join above the watercourse / buttress and then follow the same route. I'll check my books though. Thanks for the feedback
