I'd put in just a smig of Persona (especially 5 and its Palaces) in there as well. ...Also, does this mean there will be a "Things Dr. Shine is no longer allowed to do at CAIN" List?
more like Persona Kaisen. There's no containing and documenting weird stuff happening, you just fuck them up. Even the Palace thing is straight from Persona 5
I directed three sessions of CAIN by the time of writing this comment and one of the best anecdotes that has happened to us was to let one of the players make a nicotine-addicted exorcist only to find out later that you have to purchase your right to smoke with scrip. The addiction was growing in his character as a hook, and he end up using his character's time-stop powers to steal 16 cigarrettes (no more, no less) from a convenience store, just in front of the cashier. Sometimes this game is about how goblin you can be with your psychic powers, and we love that.
Abaddon making an RPG after an RPG (and also a wargame) while also continuing a web-comic and posibly something i don't even know yet. That man learned some secret Ki Rata of typing 666 symbols per minute.
Ah, Persona but the gouvernment found and dehumanised you meets Jujustu Kaisen meets Mage the Awakening as the Technocracy meets SCP's Tau-5 "Samsara" but even more assured to die. Yep, I'm down for this.
I like Tom's work but I think he should work more on offering a cleaner product before selling it. I would prefer to buy the better version of this book even if it increased it's price. I like the system (I haven't played it yet) but it's not a smooth read. A print friendly and a clean versions of the book would be really helpful, but the structure of the book itself doesn't fully win me over. The ruling of some aspects of the game seem to me to the fragmented through the book in such a way that makes makes it difficult for me to have a good grasp about simple things like using advances to level up. The use of key words isn't consistent neither.
So, let me get this straight: - SCP (CAIN as the eponymous SCP and how the factions present themselves/relate to CAIN, Archives/Object classes) - Chainsaw Man and JJK (the visual style, how the various superpowers behave, Sin appearance) - Project Moon (Blasphemies/E.G.O., Sin/Distortions, CAT/Risk Level) In short, a really messed up world. Great! Where do I sign up? I want a doomed yuri Sin to spare. Uh, I mean exorcise!
@@GeminautVA I definitely recommend four our of the five games and would recommend experiencing them (while staying the absolute fuck away from the fanbase), but to put it vaguely: one character in the third game is essentially wasting away due to a certain condition involving his Persona making it so that using it requires special drugs and makes his health even worse.
This looks like a wonderful blending of SCP, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Persona 5. I'll be buying this ASAP. ...Also, does anyone else want to see Tom Bloom and Gege Akutami (the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen) do an art collab? Maybe even draw each other's characters in their own style?
Honestly I bought this like one or two months ago just because I saw the artwork and thought it looked cool but never bothered to even read it after that so I'm glad you're here to talk about it
Aesthetics differ, but the most recent Rowan, Rook and Decard game (Hollows) has a similar, 'doomed peoples hunting monsters inside reality bubbles' premise. If you squint, the much older Mythender (kill the parasitic monsters that are the gods and hope your team ends you before you become one) also seems adjacent. And uses a lot of dice.
I shoulda just searched the comment section for Hollows. I know people who want to play either of these games but can't decide which one to play (it can sometimes be a bit toxic when it comes up).
This is perfectly in line with what i wanted for a world i made. Its funny because the people in my world are called Saints and instead of blasphemies, it's Virtues. Was looking into City of Mists because of their freeform "skills" but this matches the dark theme i wanted. Thank god this video popped up into my recommended. I can definitely see myself making some Agendas for my players and trying to make the gun system work a bit better towards certain enemies. going to love seeing the correlation between their world and mine. My first Case is already planned where my players have to look into kidnappings of these "angelic children" and eventually their going to come across a cult that takes them apart and eats them thinking it will make them "blessed".
I keep wanting to score my games to _…Because I’m Young Arrogant and Hate Everything You Stand For_, because it kinda feels wierdly appropriate for something like this.
I'm hyped to play this, and have supported Tom on Patreon for a while cause he always puts out great quality content, but after reading the rules I worry about the Admin. It looks 100% reactive during play, so I'm not sure how fun it is to play that role, or if there's enough tools for the Admin to push the story forward. If anyone that has played the game can share their thoughts on this it'd be highly appreciated :)
@@thatguy2377 Mostly the Hard (success only on 6s) and Risky (high chance of things going wrong regardless of the roll) modifiers. On higher level play it might keep things intersting while having strong characters but on lower levels it's really easy to get into a failure spiral, specialy if you have an admin that treats them as the equivalent of dnd's disadvantage. Some sins also can make all rolls both hard and risky in certain situations.
Oh boy another ttrpg with a cool premise that my group will refuse to play
I feel this too much lol
then find a new group to play with it
Become a GM, my nerds will play whatever the fuck I sit in front of them

Sighhh
I feel you brother

Dang, Wish I could have joined in. It does give me the idea of a food/gourmet-based exorcist.
Now that is just cruel.
Honestly, as a retail worker, going batshit and turning into a Sin sounds pretty good some days.

Reach Heaven Through (Narrative) Violence
on top of having, i believe, his second kid. the man is busy.
Hell yeah I love Cainsaw Man
The way sins are described really reminds me of distortions from Project Moon.

Pretty much the soundtrack in my head while I read through this.

"or straight up just toxic yuri" well now i gotta play this
Tom… Tom please I’ve been working on making a single ttrpg for nearly quarter of a year. Your starting to scare me Tom.
Tom is simply constructed alternatively

at this point, i think tom writes ttrpgs for fun

You have summoned the sleeper-agents.
Tom Bloom playing Persona: Okay but what if everyone was [redacted persona 3 spoilers. You know the character.] And people died a fuckton more often?
No offence but a bunch of us aren't persona players (the nice way of putting it) so we don't get what you're saying

FUCK YEAH LETS GOOOO

Yea someone talking about CAIN! Been obsessed since it came out.
Madoka Magica by way of Chainsaw Man. Jeezus.
...I want it.
im not kidding that i actually got jumpscared at 4:47 i didnt expect PGI Dragon out of nowhere, nice vid, definetly trying this system out!
Burn my dread
Just admin'd a great one-shot with some friends yesterday!! It was so fun that we're doing a second one this weekend!
A very similar game that you shouldn't sleep on is Triangle Agency, very original dice system and the manual it's an absolute blast to read.
Finally been waiting weeks for you to talk about this T^T
bought this on launch, my group hasn't found the time yet but man is the lore sick
Tom's never gonna finish Wallflower is he
Doesn’t he also have a webcomic? How the fuck does he find the time?

Holy shit a "Running Mech" serie on CAIN would go so hard.
This reminds me more of persona 5 more than chainsaw man
Dammit not more Tom Bloom, I can't get buying these

Welll
with the SCP metaphore- Chainsawman is not with the D-Squad, he's with the Red Right Hand, but noone comes alive from deployment
Kind of feels like a grim dark version of Kamigakari.
VGM00021 is right, this is just fuckin SCP Chainsaw Kaisen, how tf havent i learned of this yet
Hollows by Rowan, Rook, and Decard has a lot of the same vibes, but taking it from a Bloodborne direction instead.
thank you eleven dfagon kid ❤❤❤

Time to roll up Madoka Kaname
based
I'm ready to take bets that this has more than just a bit Mob Psycho 100 in it.
Holy shit, scp meets lob corp as an rpg
