Great Video! I'm from the United States and my family came from Da Nang and speaking to the other Vietnamese people here is easy for me but difficult for them to understand me. Interesting with the different dialects/accents.
Am I the only one that gets confused what Lan (the girl on the left) says with the northern pronunciations until the other two girls (Nhi and Ha) started talking??
really? what is the north central like? when i was travelling through vietnam, i went from hanoi, halong bay, hoi an and hue, before going to the south, but never have heard of the north central accent.
mileycyrusfan197 you can try search "giong nghe an" (Nghe An is a province), their accent is so heavy that even though vietnamese is my mother tounge but i can barely understand it.

Don’t worry. You’ll get there. A part of learning a language is to train your ears to listen to different dialects. And the more exposure you get, the better you’ll get.

Stevenator1210 because the girl in the middle is from the Central side but close to the South. A person from the Central region closer to the North would sound different.
The real Central accent is difficult to understand,even by Vietnamese haha.In the vid,maybe the Central girl had to speak clearly so you guys can understand:))
There are 3 main central accents which are Da Nang, Hue, Quang. The video doesn't specify which central accent she plays but based on her pronunciation she speaks with Southern accent not among the 3 central accent I mention.
I have really broken Vietnamese because growing up my mom wasn’t around a lot, but when I try to pronounce the words it sounds like I have a central/southern accent. Cool.
You guys clearly have never heard about the "Nghe An, Ha Tinh" and "Quang Tri" accent, that is like the hardest of the hardest accent in Vietnam - hard even for me who is bred and born Vietnamese.... Would be cool to hear a Westerner speak one of those accents. But I would be impressed if you can.
StayReal02 my whole family speaks the Nghe An accent and my friends who are speaking north vietnamese they barely understand a word. It’s sometimes so funny to see how lost they are. right now I am working on improving my north dialect. It’s still quite difficult to emphasize the syllables more clearly but comparing to the nghe an dialect it’s not a big deal. Hehe ;)
@@Tiaimo At the beginning of the video, it's mentioned that the second girl speaks with a Đà Nẵng dialect. But without help I would also had to guess the dialect. Ay, my family is from Vinh too.

As a southern Vietnamese person I could barely understand north and south 😭 Especially with the last one, I was shocked the way the northern girl said xuống
Yes, the northerners speak d, gi, r the same and = d, the centrals and the southerners speak d = gi and r. d = z and gi = j in english. The north speaks s=x, tr=ch too, the central and the south differentiate that. s = sh in english, x=s in english, tr=tro, ch=ch in english, not t-r like in other european languages. Why o? Because english people speak reis like roeis, tree like trü (truy). German speaks that pure like viet. The centrals and souths tend to reduce h in the end, ex. Chanh like chan (actually i heart chăn), but add g in the end n, thận like thậng. The diphthongs the south and centrals reduce to vowel, you should learn standard from the north.
@@thongoc8030 It’s interesting to observe these shifts in Vietnamese and notice counterparts in other languages. Like muốn/(muún) in Vietnamese and the German example of gut/guat in certain dialects, or coffee/coaffee in American standard/New York accents.
The progression of the dấu hỏi from North to South is especially interesting; the contour in Central Vietnam is closer to Southern but it retains the glottal of the North, where in the South that is reduced to a slight change in register. Similar with dấu ngã. Much is made of those two tones, but nặng is quite different as well, and I hear subtle differences in the others as well.
Northern accent, Southern vocab? Is this (or its opposite) a common thing in Vietnam? Or say, northern accent/central vocab or central accent/southern vocab? It does seem like it would be confusing! I live in Northern U.S; if I tried to use my normal Northern "accent" but spoke using all the Southern slang (or colloquialisms, etc.) of the southern U.S. states, I think I would be confused & it would sound really weird! ;)
Tom Mullen many northern Vietnamese moved to southern Vietnam on operation passage to freedom between 1954 and 1955 because they did not wish to live in a communist country and the changes that came with it. They are called Bac 54. Many of them retain a northern accent but after years of living in south Vietnam and being surrounded by southern Vietnamese people they've adopted southern slang and vocabulary by now. Many families with Bac 54 history live in the US in the Vietnamese American community.
@@neoflare24 Yes, it's a thing; especially those whose families fled the North for the South after 1954, or even more recently because of economic opportunities.
Native speakers don't have much difficulty understanding, North or Southern accent are mutually understandable. The ones that have difficulties are usually foreigners and Vietnamese Americans (no exposure to Vietnamese music, news or media)
I have a mixture of Central and Southern dialect since my dad is from Ba Ria and my mom is from Hue/Da Nang. Quite interesting since I don't understand anything in the Central area.
There is another common accent in Vietnam. It's Mekong Delta accent. They would say "Việt Nam" to "Ziệc Nam" or "con vịt" --> con zịt, rất --> gất, rõ ràng --> gõ gàng, bận --> bậng Also, in Central area, there are many sub-accents like: Huế, Nghệ An, Quảng Ngãi, Bình Định 😂
Danang accennt is not typical accent of Vietnamese middle cause they are alot differencies of accents in middle of VN such as Phu Yen, Hue, Quang Nam..etc.
Tony Vo You’re right! Vietnamese accents or dialects change province by province. Central Vietnamese changes more noticeably geographically. We should have clarified this from the beginning. Thanks for pointing that out :)
For the words with leading "r"'s (starting at 2:25), I had trouble understanding the central and (esp.) southern pronunciations; particularly for phrases with 2 "r" words, they seem to say the r's differently sometimes (the second "r" different from the first)--e.g., Ha (southern) pronouncing the second "r" like a "g", which I've never heard before... At 4:30-4:40 ("kien(g)"), the northern and southern spellings were different, but the words sounded about the same (as opposed to the central accent). For each of the diphthongs (starting at 6:00), Lan (northern) separately enunciated each of the vowels, while Nhi (central) & Ha (southern) just pronounced them as a single vowel sound; so, it seems like central & southern accents don't make a big deal about diphthongs.
Southern "r" can be pronounced a few ways such as a trill, more similar to English's or even a retroflex (like a zh sound found in words like elision or invasion). As for kính/kiếng, the difference lies in the length of the vowel sounds; kính sounds like ging while kiếng is like geeng (gee-uhng). The South has a lot of words/alternate readings that alter the vowels such as chánh (chính), kiếng (kính), bịnh (bệnh). You're right in saying that Southern diphthongs are often simplified. E.g. ươu and ưu > u and iêu > iu. Some other examples include điện thoại > điện thọi in colloquial speech.
Thank you for this video. From this video/lesson, I have learnt it is easier to learn a pronunciation; especially where there are comparative examples from a different person ( even though it is with a slightly different accent). WONDERFUL Lesson.
There are some mistakes needed to clarify by Southern accent. Southerners say "mắc" instead of "đắt". The word "run" is pronounced like "rung". The Southerner lady pronounces such way is Northern pronunciation. And "sẽ" pronounced like she did is funny. It's pretty much like Quảng accent.
When your family is from the Saigon & Con Tho South Region, then you're born in America and then you end up learning the Northern Way of saying things.
It’s fun to say the words they’re saying in the video, I didn’t understand the pronunciation of the words until it reached to the central and south dialects. I have a mix between the southern and central dialect but it’s mostly southern from my mom’s side. My dad’s side is from the central but my dad has a southern dialect. Thanks to this video, it’s easier to tell which dialect is which.
As a Europian I found the northern one the hardest and the other 2 more natural to pronounce. That's why when I try to speak in HOI An nobody understands me. I have to learn the the other accents
That central accent is actually the South Central accent (or Nẫu accent) which is spoken from Đà Nẵng to Bình Thuận. The South Central accent is roughly similar to the Southern accent when we try to speak in formal situations and places (at school). However, there're some big differences in pronunciation between these 2 accents if you notice, especially when local people speak in their daily conversation. Furthermore, we also have a North Central accent which is spoken from Nghệ An to Huế.
Hi there, you don't know how much I appreciate this video! I'm currently living in HCMC but I always think I'd rather learn the Northan accent and tones first otherwise my oral Vietnamese will be very messy... BTW, when I hear Lan's pronunciation, the consonant "n" in the THẬN (0:39) and THIỆN (3:40), it sounds like consonant "t" to me. Is there such a tendency or I have a ear problem...
No With the tone "nang" the nasal codas (consonant at the end of the syllables) tend to denasalize. "-NG" will sound like "-K" and "-M" will sound like "-P".

A like much the northern accent because seems to respect the sound of all vocals, more easy for Spanish speakers, but I like how central and south are more according the real sound of the R, not much as the "DZ" sound of the north.
Yes i was tryimg to tell my Southern Gf that they speak different and she had no idea what i was talking about. I also noticed they would say "troi oi" BUT in the North they say "Oi Goi Oi" I was reading out i wanted the mi khong ga gion and i said and they didnt know but i showed the text and asked how to say it and then they said how the mid and southern say it without pronouncing strongly the g in ga. I am puzzled now how i should say ga (chicken) when ordering now? I think i will mostly be around Da Nang and Saigon but i am learning through an app the northern accent
For Central you should have got a Huế person for contrast, or at least a countryside Quảng Nam dialect. Nowadays Đà Nẵng has almost the same accent as Sài Gòn, kind of pointless

It's kind of funny this video.....but...now I can pronounce several words in three different versions but I have no idea where I'm talking about. Maybe you can also make a few more video's because one of my friends comes from Da Nang and lives now in Ha Noi, she's pronouncing different with what you have on the video. The same with another friend who's from Ha Noi and is now living in HCMC. The big problem with pronunciation is that no one pronounce correctly. Even on you own video's you can hear one person pronouncing the same words difference within one video. It's not strange because it is in fact physical impossible to produce two times the same sound. There are many reasons why courses shouldn't pay so much attention to the pronunciation....do that when you've been studying for several years and your knowledge is already great. But most video's are mentioned for beginners. And apparently no one during the production of this video came with the idea that learning a list of telephone numbers is not very useful when you do not know the persons behind the numbers. Pronunciation exercises with only pronunciation without knowing what you're saying are lost time. Sorry, you do have several much better video's, just do not spoil your time with this kind of video's except when you make a real fun video of it, like what happens when they do not understand your accent....
I have heard Hanoi Vietnam is very Chinese while southern Vietnam is less so. I wonder if that’s just the culture, or maybe that applies to appearance. The Hanoi girl can pass as Chinese, physically speaking. The middle girl… maybe? The last girl… least Chinese.
My grandmother says she speaks northern. She does dắu hỏi just like the northern in the video but she pronounces R like English r, not /z/. But D like /z/. What accent is that? Lol
I can see the differences of looks between them. North Vietnamese looks completely Chinese. Central Looks mixed. Southern looks completely Southeast Asian like Khmer and Malay
I agree they have different physical traits but so would any three (non-related)people, anywhere. Maybe it's because I don't live there (Vietnam), but characterizing people's looks based on where they live (and/or their ethnicities) is a dicey thing, to put it mildly--as if everyone living in the North "looked" like Lan, everyone living in the South "looked" like Ha, etc.
Tom Mullen It’s because Vietnamese Kingdom starts from The North, South Vietnam wasn’t part of Vietnam before the 15th Century, It was a Kingdom called Champa which is ruled by Chamic Austronesian Peoples, After Vietnam invaded Champa and start mixing with the Chams, Deep south Vietnam remains Part of Cambodia until the early 19th century, the sudden invasion causes Mixing. Southern Vietnamese peoples isn’t fuly Viet, they are descendants of Chams amd khmers

@@niamtxiv southerner here but i have to agree that the southern accent sounds oddly "gay" and sometimes too confusing for foreign learners ( cuz we like to swish different sounds into one lol ). Yet every accent is unique and they play their parts in the diversity of Vietnamese language. That's why there has never been any "standard accent" ( unlike Korean ). For example, the national broadcast still uses both the southern and northern accent.
No Vietnamese speak the correct (standard) Vietnamese language. The standard of the Vietnamese language is considered the northern dialect with a clear distinction d-r-gi, s-x, ch-tr. The inhabitants of Central and South Vietnam understand the northern dialect well, but the northerners hardly understand the central and southern dialect.
I'm a foreigner, and my mother tongue is very close to the Northern accent. So I can understand the Northern girl very clearly, but the other two... nope. It's all very pleasant to hear though!
Both your statements have serious flaws. Both my paternal/maternal grandmother's families lived in Hanoi for generations and none of them distinguish among d-r-gi, s-x or ch-tr. None of other northerners' accents do that either. In the past, some poets tried to do that to sound more elegant, but the average people wouldn't care about this because separating these sounds complicates the pronunciation. In fact, nowadays whenever I hear anyone in Hanoi speaking with distinct d-r-gi, s-x, ch-tr, I can immediately recognize they're from one of the North/Central provinces e.g. Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, etc. These people try to learn Hanoian accent but still keep some of their native pronunciations. Northerners don't hardly understand southern accent. I travel a lot to the South for vacation and I understand most of the "standard" accents like Saigon's, Nha Trang's or even Da Nang's (central-south). Problems only occur whenever I use northern vocabs as they can confuse some southerners (cái bát, cái thìa, cái dĩa, cái đĩa, quả dứa, quả mận, quả na, etc.). The only thing we can't do is distinguish among southern provinces' local accent.

The Central of Vietnam includes 2 parts, the North and the South. You said it just because you haven't know the accent in Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Phu Yen. All those 6 provinces have their own way to express their tones in Vietnamese and plus they are in the North Central Coast of Vietnam. But maybe in Da Nang and other provinces or cities that are in the Southern Central Coast of Vietnam, they still have almost the same way to use the tones as the Southern Vietnam do. That's why in this video, the girl in Da Nang nearly say the word just like the girl in Saigon.
No, central VN have many accents, too hard to learn. Even u are Vietnamese, you still can’t listen what them say. The best accent is Central high, because it is mix of south, north and central.
I never heard of Austronesians, so I Googled it. On Quora, someone wrote “'Austronesian' is not the name of a group of people, but of a language family" (perhaps that's just a semantic distinction). Also, a map I saw only linked Austronesians to certain inland (mountain?) portions of Southern & Central Vietnam--which doesn't suggest that ALL southern Vietnamese are Austronesians (or descended from Austronesians). Another map showed an Austronesian migration path that started in N. Vietnam (probably around where Hanoi is today), went through S. Vietnam--thus encompassing both N and S Vietnam--and, along with other such paths, ended in the region of Malaysia and other adjacent countries/islands. FWIW

I’m sorry but the South Vietnamese accent a la Saigon accent is sooooo much easier on the ears. Beautiful accent. The North accent is hideous! Awkward & sharp. UK born guy here. Mother’s side hail from Saigon & Cantonese, father from China - I really struggle with the North & Hue accent!

not if you are a good speaker in Hanoi. Everyone can hear you, and everyone born after 1980 can speak and hear another accent with ease

The progression of the dấu hỏi from North to South is especially interesting; the contour in Central Vietnam is closer to Southern but it retains the glottal of the North, where in the South that is reduced to a slight change in register. Similar with dấu ngã. Much is made of those two tones, but nặng is quite different as well, and I hear subtle differences in the others as well.
My family has the northern dialect, but we use southern vocabulary. So when I tried pronouncing these words, I was even more confused. T_T

I live in Northern U.S; if I tried to use my normal Northern "accent" but spoke using all the Southern slang (or colloquialisms, etc.) of the southern U.S. states, I think I would be confused & it would sound really weird! ;)
Tom Mullen many northern Vietnamese moved to southern Vietnam on operation passage to freedom between 1954 and 1955 because they did not wish to live in a communist country and the changes that came with it. They are called Bac 54. Many of them retain a northern accent but after years of living in south Vietnam and being surrounded by southern Vietnamese people they've adopted southern slang and vocabulary by now. Many families with Bac 54 history live in the US in the Vietnamese American community.

Native speakers don't have much difficulty understanding, North or Southern accent are mutually understandable. The ones that have difficulties are usually foreigners and Vietnamese Americans (no exposure to Vietnamese music, news or media)
I have a mixture of Central and Southern dialect since my dad is from Ba Ria and my mom is from Hue/Da Nang. Quite interesting since I don't understand anything in the Central area.

There is another common accent in Vietnam. It's Mekong Delta accent. They would say "Việt Nam" to "Ziệc Nam" or "con vịt" --> con zịt, rất --> gất, rõ ràng --> gõ gàng, bận --> bậng

For the words with leading "r"'s (starting at 2:25), I had trouble understanding the central and (esp.) southern pronunciations; particularly for phrases with 2 "r" words, they seem to say the r's differently sometimes (the second "r" different from the first)--e.g., Ha (southern) pronouncing the second "r" like a "g", which I've never heard before... At 4:30-4:40 ("kien(g)"), the northern and southern spellings were different, but the words sounded about the same (as opposed to the central accent). For each of the diphthongs (starting at 6:00), Lan (northern) separately enunciated each of the vowels, while Nhi (central) & Ha (southern) just pronounced them as a single vowel sound; so, it seems like central & southern accents don't make a big deal about diphthongs.
Southern "r" can be pronounced a few ways such as a trill, more similar to English's or even a retroflex (like a zh sound found in words like elision or invasion). As for kính/kiếng, the difference lies in the length of the vowel sounds; kính sounds like ging while kiếng is like geeng (gee-uhng). The South has a lot of words/alternate readings that alter the vowels such as chánh (chính), kiếng (kính), bịnh (bệnh). You're right in saying that Southern diphthongs are often simplified. E.g. ươu and ưu > u and iêu > iu. Some other examples include điện thoại > điện thọi in colloquial speech.

There are some mistakes needed to clarify by Southern accent. Southerners say "mắc" instead of "đắt". The word "run" is pronounced like "rung". The Southerner lady pronounces such way is Northern pronunciation. And "sẽ" pronounced like she did is funny. It's pretty much like Quảng accent.
As what they say all the time Northern vocabulary is standard, which I just couldn't understand.

I have a mix between the southern and central dialect but it’s mostly southern from my mom’s side. My dad’s side is from the central but my dad has a southern dialect. That central accent is actually the South Central accent (or Nẫu accent) which is spoken from Đà Nẵng to Bình Thuận. The South Central accent is roughly similar to the Southern accent when we try to speak in formal situations and places (at school). However, there're some big differences in pronunciation between these 2 accents if you notice, especially when local people speak in their daily conversation. Furthermore, we also have a North Central accent which is spoken from Nghệ An to Huế.

No With the tone "nang" the nasal codas (consonant at the end of the syllables) tend to denasalize. "-NG" will sound like "-K" and "-M" will sound like "-P".
As a Chinese diaspora, I feel the northern Vietnamese sounds very similar to us, it is very clear tone to be understood by us.

Sara P Da Nang sounds more South because they use more proper Vietnamese than other cities (Hoi An for instance). Hue accent sounds much more heavier.

A like much the northern accent because seems to respect the sound of all vocals, more easy for Spanish speakers, but I like how central and south are more according the real sound of the R, not much as the "DZ" sound of the north.
Northern accent is closer to dictation. The Central Accent here is quite close to Southern one actually.

It's kind of funny this video.....but...now I can pronounce several words in three different versions but I have no idea where I'm talking about.
Maybe you can also make a few more video's because one of my friends comes from Da Nang and lives now in Ha Noi, she's pronouncing different with what you have on the video. The same with another friend who's from Ha Noi and is now living in HCMC.
The big problem with pronunciation is that no one pronounce correctly. Even on you own video's you can hear one person pronouncing the same words difference within one video.
It's not strange because it is in fact physical impossible to produce two times the same sound.
There are many reasons why courses shouldn't pay so much attention to the pronunciation....do that when you've been studying for several years and your knowledge is already great. But most video's are mentioned for beginners. And apparently no one during the production of this video came with the idea that learning a list of telephone numbers is not very useful when you do not know the persons behind the numbers.
Pronunciation exercises with only pronunciation without knowing what you're saying are lost time. Sorry, you do have several much better video's, just do not spoil your time with this kind of video's except when you make a real fun video of it, like what happens when they do not understand your accent....
I have heard Hanoi Vietnam is very Chinese while southern Vietnam is less so. I wonder if that’s just the culture, or maybe that applies to appearance. The Hanoi girl can pass as Chinese, physically speaking. The middle girl… maybe? The last girl… least Chinese.

Native speakers don't have much of a hard time understanding the other accents, but a thick central accent (Hue) can be harder to understand

I can see the differences of looks between them. North Vietnamese looks completely Chinese. Central Looks mixed. Southern looks completely Southeast Asian like Khmer and Malay
I agree they have different physical traits but so would any three (non-related)people, anywhere. Maybe it's because I don't live there (Vietnam), but characterizing people's looks based on where they live (and/or their ethnicities) is a dicey thing, to put it mildly--as if everyone living in the North "looked" like Lan, everyone living in the South "looked" like Ha, etc.

Southern Vietnamese peoples isn’t fuly Viet, they are descendants of Chams amd khmers

Yet every accent is unique and they play their parts in the diversity of Vietnamese language. That's why there has never been any "standard accent" ( unlike Korean ). For example, the national broadcast still uses both the southern and northern accent.

No Vietnamese speak the correct (standard) Vietnamese language. The standard of the Vietnamese language is considered the northern dialect with a clear distinction d-r-gi, s-x, ch-tr.
The inhabitants of Central and South Vietnam understand the northern dialect well, but the northerners hardly understand the central and southern dialect.

Both your statements have serious flaws. Both my paternal/maternal grandmother's families lived in Hanoi for generations and none of them distinguish among d-r-gi, s-x or ch-tr. None of other northerners' accents do that either. In the past, some poets tried to do that to sound more elegant, but the average people wouldn't care about this because separating these sounds complicates the pronunciation.
In fact, nowadays whenever I hear anyone in Hanoi speaking with distinct d-r-gi, s-x, ch-tr, I can immediately recognize they're from one of the North/Central provinces e.g. Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, etc. These people try to learn Hanoian accent but still keep some of their native pronunciations.
Northerners don't hardly understand southern accent. I travel a lot to the South for vacation and I understand most of the "standard" accents like Saigon's, Nha Trang's or even Da Nang's (central-south). Problems only occur whenever I use northern vocabs as they can confuse some southerners (cái bát, cái thìa, cái dĩa, cái đĩa, quả dứa, quả mận, quả na, etc.). The only thing we can't do is distinguish among southern provinces' local accent.

All those 6 provinces have their own way to express their tones in Vietnamese and plus they are in the North Central Coast of Vietnam. But maybe in Da Nang and other provinces or cities that are in the Southern Central Coast of Vietnam, they still have almost the same way to use the tones as the Southern Vietnam do. That's why in this video, the girl in Da Nang nearly say the word just like the girl in Saigon.

I never heard of Austronesians, so I Googled it. On Quora, someone wrote “'Austronesian' is not the name of a group of people, but of a language family" (perhaps that's just a semantic distinction). Also, a map I saw only linked Austronesians to certain inland (mountain?) portions of Southern & Central Vietnam--which doesn't suggest that ALL southern Vietnamese are Austronesians (or descended from Austronesians). Another map showed an Austronesian migration path that started in N. Vietnam (probably around where Hanoi is today), went through S. Vietnam--thus encompassing both N and S Vietnam--and, along with other such paths, ended in the region of Malaysia and other adjacent countries/islands. FWIW
it's not always the case. Yeah they've got mixed with Cham, and Khmer but they still speak Austro-asiatic, not Austronesian.
