Bolting rabbits at harvest time

  • My tactics were to stand on the outside of the field looking into the standing crop rather than standing by the crop and shooting back towards the margins. Concentrating intensely on the edge of the cut, I saw those brown flashes that have the ability to unnerve even the safest of shooters. A hare passed by as my raised gun saluted its escape, and as I watched it meander off, I wondered whether we would see a fox departing the rest of the crop, as they love standing rape. No sooner had this thought entered my mind than I saw a beautiful dark red fox looking right at me. I barked out, "Fox!" in Steve and Ryan's direction, but my dulcet tones were drowned out by the whizzes and whirrs of the heavy machinery working the field. It was soon way out of range, and as only a few Guns were present to cover such a huge area, this wily customer was able to make good its escape across the stubble.
Though the rabbits were not out in great numbers, the farmer likes to see a few Guns present, reassuring him that those that have made it through the summer have an armed welcoming party at harvest time. I have yet to meet a farmer who doesn't raise a smile when presented with a game carrier full of rabbits going into the back of a truck rather than back into his fields.

I remember well keeping a shotgun behind the seat of the corn picker. Very few farmers couldn't shoot with one hand and drive with the other. We ate a lot of rabbit at harvest time. Mom always canned the surplus. Or we gave them to poor families who needed the meat.

It's different in various localities and even within the same county one might find a small crop of Rabbits that need thining out and one can go just a few miles futher down the road, and then there's no Rabbibts there. Many Farmer's ,landowner's etc will always want them eradicating. However, my brother along with friends would take our little hotch -potch team of terriers out for the Rats. Rats were in large numbers due to a never ever supply of food,i.e. food for the Chickens ,a plentiful supply of fresh water, lus a warm enviroment. "How often one could hear the farmer stating that crtain Rats needed maintaining for future Breeding stock. What a great character he was.

Thank you. I am trying to film what we do and how with my limited resources in my own style. It has been a steep learning curve but very enjoyable as it is stressful. Remember to subscribe folks.

Humans got used to killing animals, but perhaps there is no other way, since there are not enough predators to kill them. And it would cost a lot to build a complete wall around all the crops...

Why not just build a fence around the field?

John Smith clearly a townie. Rabbits can dig. And anyway fence posts and wire costs amount to more than a box of cartridges

You can easily dig a 10-inch deep trench and then bury the bottom of a chicken wire fence underground to prevent the rabbits from digging through. Perhaps more expensive up front but saves money in the long run and is much less cruel.

John Smith shooting a rabbit as with any vermin isn’t cruel as a good shot will place enough shot on the animal to kill it. There’s a reason rabbits are on the vermin list because of the dangerous numbers there are.

+Rin Tezuka (43 year old gay bronie) not to mention that if you don't keep the rabbit population down on a field they'll multiply to the point that you'll be peeling apart probably thousands of baby bunnies alive (more painful + slower than shooting) every time you go over it with the combine anyway.
