- The bloody battle between American rebels and General Santa Anna’s forces at the Alamo was a seminal moment in Texas history.
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

Comedian: How does davey crockett like his pie? Alamo'd
Host: I gotta go
I died screaming 😂😂😂😂
He wants that pie
😂😂😂😂😂
Oh Bowie...that's A LOT
best fucking joke..EVER..until further notice🤷🏾♂️😂😂😂
"I gotta go" LMAO
*ALAMO*
I HOLLERED 😭😭😭💀💯
He said me too like they weren't at HIS house 😅😭🤣
"Yeah, me too."
ALMAO
one of the most (melo)dramatic Drunk History ever!!! Delicious.
Being from Texas and actually having visited The Alamo as a child and having "learned" (ha) about it in school and still having absolutely NO CLUE WHO "WON" and actually drinking right now this very minute watching this episode of "Drunk History" (which I really love), this will be good.
Ah And I live in Mexico now by the way, which will just make the experience that much richer.
And the most not historically correct I've ever seen.
I saw two Mexican soldiers fighting over the same rifle, I think.
Lolzz, FACTS! @ 3:29 😂
😂😂😂
😂😂
The Mexican solider was using the rifle to choke the colonel.
Jesus Christ, Derek...you're a good actor. I got a little choked up in your death scene. You're all doing excellent work here.
It's still weird for me to see Matt Gorley and not just hear his beautiful voice on a podcast.
Right! He and Conan are pretty great together
Can't believe the podcast is that old
"When the USA sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
- Mexican President Santa Anna, regarding all those illegal immigrants from the USA going into the Mexican territory of Texas.
Highice007 betraying such oath throws away such invite... They turned such welcome into illegal claim.. Or ok forget illegal.. This is straight up treason, far worse.
Lucas Liso sounds a lot like Trump. Both spewing immigrant rhetoric While also fucking over their own people with their greed and self serving bullshit. The only shit Santa Ana had going was that he went to the front lines with his fucking madness. Trump is a fucking coward behind twitter.
Lol
in reality tho they were allowed in as long as they don't bring their slaves but they did anyways
yeee and as long as they converted to catholicism
Davy Crockett: “ You can go to hell, I’ll go to Texas.”
Me in Patrick’s voice: “What’s the difference?”
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING LMAO!! 😂😂😂😂
You eat me to it
Honestly 😆💯
Just a note, I'm pretty sure that the difference was the treatment of the native Americans. Crockett was sympathetic to the Native Americans and the rest of the Tennessean legislature wasn't. So he left 🤷
Right!
Honestly.. When is High History going to become a thing?
Smoking weed causes short term memory loss! You guys might forget important plot points!

It would have to be an hour long with all the long pauses and "Oh, what was I saying?" being repeated.

Taco Cabana man...

"The winter's too harsh on these high Mexican deserts."
IT IS!!! It gets soooo fucking cold especially by the border ! Boiiii
There were blizzards back in those days.
San Antonio is not in the desert or high.
Coming from the northeast I wondered what the heck that could possibly mean!
As a Texan, I wish this is how we were taught about the Alamo. Cause teachers hyped that shit up and the Alamo is the size of a small house. That shit is wack.
They should have hid in the basement! The ALAMO'S BASEMENT! ;)
Pee Wee Herman might agree.
dat reference.
"There's no basement in the Alamo silly" ...great reference
Interestingly they wanted to build down beneath the Alamo to create some foundation and strengthen the buildings, but we have an aquifer here that provides the large majority of the cities water so they couldn't. Same reason why there's not any very tall buildings here.
@@maxhydekyle2425 It would have been a great place to keep their bikes.
3:12 “two slaves..” both of them looking pissed off like why df are we here?
I'm pretty sure Texas was fighting to be an independent country because Mexico abolished slavery and they wanted to do slavery too
Ok, but like, Derek is legit a class-a actor. I can’t even with his skills sometimes.
every time I see Jack Johnson I remember Nick Miller and that makes me smile
This is probably one of the more serious drunk histories (with a few jokes here and there) and so at 4:50 it got me in my feels real fast
I've rewatched Derek's death scene like 50 times, he is such a good actor, how have I never noticed this before wtf
Wonderful to see the legendary Matt Gourley.
So they took a mission that wasn't theirs and got killed for it..... That's the most American thing ever.
Actually, the most American thing ever is a broad generalization that simplifies a much more complex situation
@@jordanwilliam23 Ur right, let him right a book in a youtube comment so everybody can be satisfied
To be fair it was during a revolution... do we say that Americans were taking land that wasn’t there’s from the British during the American revolution?
@@sattheer1493 yes, but we weren't taking it from the british
Texan**
I like the story of Sam Houston better.
The Texas Revolution
In 1821, Texas was part of Mexico. The land was cheap, so
many Americans settled in Texas. Mexico tried to stop them,
but they still came. Slavery was against Mexican law, but
Americans brought slaves to Texas. Many American settlers
and Tejanos, or Mexicans who lived in Texas, wanted to
break away from Mexico. They did not like laws made by
Santa Anna, Mexico’s president. The Tejanos and Texans
decided to fight for independence.
In 1836, Santa Anna took an army to San Antonio to
take a fort called the Alamo. Fewer than 200 Texans and
Tejanos met him. Most of them died in battle. After this,
Texans declared independence and formed the Republic of
Texas. Sam Houston led their army in a surprise attack at
San Jacinto. They won, and captured Santa Anna. For his
freedom, Santa Anna gave Texas its independence.
Texans elected Sam Houston president and voted
to join the United States. They also made slavery legal.
President Van Buren was against annexation. Mexico wanted
to keep Texas, and Van Buren feared it would cause war. He
also didn’t want to add a new state to the Union that
allowed slavery. People who wanted to annex Texas said it
was the manifest destiny of the United States to spread from
the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. In 1845, James Polk
became President. Congress voted to annex Texas.
War with Mexico
The United States and Mexico disagreed on the border
between Texas and Mexico. Congress declared war in 1846.
Soldiers fought on three fronts. Americans captured Mexico
City in 1847. In 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico agreed to the annexation of
Texas and the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and
Mexico. Mexico also gave a large area of land, the Mexican
Cession, to the United States.
Short version. US stole Texas. Kind of reminds me of Jerusalem and Palestine. Lol
I can understand why Texans didn't want to be part of Mexico, specially under that president but if you are fighting from indepence, why no go for broke and, you know...be independent
Well, too late now.
I applaud your knowledge of true Texas history. I'm a Texan myself. This drunk history was a bit offensive to be honest. The men who went to the Alamo didn't go there for the hell of it. Santa Ana and his henchmen were murdering every white or native American in their path without mercy, or reason.
@@JohnnyGification ..... It was call Israel before I was called Palestine. Palestine a Greek word comes from the word Philistine.... During its long history, Jerusalem has been attacked 52 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, besieged 23times, and destroyed twice. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE, making Jerusalem one of the oldest cities in the world. To the victors go the spoils of war. Got to love real history and not drunk history.
@@CT-um7zq .... Santa Ana wanted to disarm a lot of texicans. He called for gun confiscation long ago from White and Mexican settlements. That was not the only laws they didn't care for. The obvious was slavery. Santa Anta became more enraged with the immigration into Texas and the numbers of the people coming into settlements. It's a great argument for walls and security today. Im a Texan and half Hispanic. My father was Mexican and my mother was a 6th generation Texan.
That egg looked good.
You mean those plain eggs?
That drawn out death scene at 3:33 is hilarious!
Gourley should do a drunk episode about the history of Bakelite rotary phones specifically those used during the Eisenhower administration.
This is an interesting story to do a Drunk History of because the story of texas is actually filled with a lot of nuance and details and not one really comes out clean in it.
But the americans wanted to keep their slaves. lets not forget that part.
Yup. Santa Anna was a total douchebag, but the Anglos were anti-Catholic slavers.
THANK YOU! There was so much background I'd argue was really important that was left out, including the slavery issue.
im san antone to the bone (born and raised) and that joke at the end had me cracking up!!! lol
Having been born and raised in San Antonio we had literally two years of just San Antonio history in elementary school. Over elementary school we probably took a field trip to the Alamo at least a dozen times. Also the most popular local Tex-Mex restaurant here is Alamo Cafe and they have Alamo shaped crackers. It's safe to say if I never heard the word Alamo the rest of my life it'd be too soon.
How does Davy Crockett like his pie?
Alamo'd
@Deus Costa yea, me too
He took his breakfast in the Alamo, but they took his leg in San Jacinto.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO!
He lost his leg in a different battle in a battle against the French.
Watching these high, not drunk. Can I kick it?
MrKegsworth No, get your hippie ass the fuck out of here
"Yes you caaaan!"

Matt Gourley was in every media we've ever consumed.
I unironically do this subconsciously when I'm drunk
Do it consciously!
Bushido Brown deal
I drunkenly tell stories about the Alamo a lot since I got years of San Antonio history in school that are otherwise useless.

And here I always thought the drunk history on Alexander Hamilton was my favorite....I was wrong....that pun at the end won me over completely
Probably one of the best speakers on Drunk history
So odd to see Gourley's face after god knows how often I hear him on podcasts.
That was actually one of the more respectable interpretations of what may have happened to Crockett. Some believe he surrendered and tried to talk his way out of it (though there was no proof of that but yeah). There's still debates on how he really died even though it seems kind of pointless by the grand scheme of things.
The only real question is whether you believe in the legend of Davy Crockett or not. If you do, then there should be no doubt in your mind that he died the death of a hero having never surrendered. If you do not believe in the legend, then he was just a man and it does not matter how he died.
@@robertgr0077 Probably considering how legends tends to exaggerate or embellish exploits of historical figures. In the end it seems the point is to embrace it depending on the person however.
Pointless in the grand scheme as everything is, but fascinating on the human interest and historic level as everything is.
Alamo’ed 😂😂😂 but seriously I was taught that David Crockett was all that and he was.....nothing.
I couldn't love Matt Gourley more
I like how Texas is always though of a Desert
Sarah Paulson would absolutely own a drunk history role. I can only imagine who would narrate it
I wrote a paper on the Alamo and cited this as a source
The fight scenes are legendary and all movies should look like this lol 😆
The last 10 seconds is pure gold
I love your video! 👏🏻
weirdly pro custer tbh - that was occupied land the us had no right to claim it, they were the aggressors
1:41, they say they were on his land... Santa Ana's land
Alys Tarot Moonscape it was not U.S land- it was occupied, they had no claim to it and no right to be there
They where actually allowed to settle in the land by the Mexican govt but Santa Anna became a dictator and the settlers and many Mexican citizens wanted to become independent.
Emmafeelsblah lmao they weren’t us citizens they were Texans who moved to Texas which was owned by Mexico they were Mexican citizens then Santa Anna became a dictator and tried to make them leave
It wasn't US land... But it was occupied, namely by the Tejanos at the time. Santa Anna wanted to consolidate his power and and remove immigrants so he went around killing and capturing foreigners and dissolving legitimate treaties and land claim deeds. Santa Ana was the aggressor, and in many ways.
"March Thix" 😂
It’s about time, been waiting for this kne
Matt Gourley is the best 👏👏👏
The Alamo is a great movie 🎥... billybob is Davie Crockett, Patrick Wilson is Travis, James Patric is Bowie, and Dennis Quaid is Houston-Houston Texas capital. Native Americans, Mexicans, and Texans joined together to battle Spain. Dave Crocket never wore that raccoon hat thing, until someone wrote that into a script of a play production. Anyway, awesome 👏🏼.
Very well filmed for CC
1:13 this got reversed back on us hard 😂
Why did he have to die like that 😂😂
"Cannonbally after cannonbally" HILARIOUS
Michelle Koh Sorry but it’s “cannon volley”, which is an actual term and not a drunk vocabulary invention
I also heard it as Cannonbally and tbh I like it better that way
matt‼️‼️‼️‼️
4:03 tub-burk-le-osis. 😂😂😂
I love that Bowie always has his knife
Drunk History needs to do a telling of the “16 tons” song and what inspired it.
That joke at the end was amazing!!!
Remember the Alamo! Remember that private US citizens invaded another country
General JellyRoll
They were colonists that had claim to that land under an agreement made with Moses Austin. They were upset when Santa Anna took over and began disregarding the Mexican Constitution of 1824 which gave them certain rights. That’s why the flag they flew over the Alamo and many early Texas Revolution battles looked like the Mexican flag with 1824 in the middle
@@MeragRealm Ya that was the way that ranching worked back then. Mexico didn't give a shit about slavery they just didn't want to lose valuable land.
And they did it again with Hawaii. Seriously, that's why the US is so scared of illegal immigrants. They are scared they are going to do to them what they already did to Mexico and Hawaii.
@Christobanistan think again.
Best joke on UA-cam
3:40 my boy Joe was like im out lol
Best story to tell in this series period
Been living in San Antonio all my life. Pro-Texans who eat up the myths and legends of Texas independence as stone-cold facts annoy me to no end. Spend a day in Southtown, La Villita, Market Square, and King William's District, and you'll find a fusion of culture that defines Texas better than some out-of-date battle cry.
I'm from Texas and I remember going to the Alamo on a field trip in elementary school. I dont remember learning about the stuff from 0:10 to 0:37 though.
As a native Texan, yes this is sorta what happened.
Who else is working on a drunk watching these? Only 5 beers in though. Also, tuberculiosis 😂😂😂

Technically, it's supposed to be "remember Goliad, remember the Alamo!" But no one ever remembers Goliad. More lives were lost and a much darker tale but forgotten to all but a few Texas historians.
its similar to people saying "remember waco!" when Ruby Ridge was WAY WORSE. also in TX btw, Waco i mean.

My daughter dated a Davy Crockett in high school... directly related to THE Davy Crockett.
Remember the Alamo!
Nice
I swear to god I learned about this today and this video is waaaaaay more descriptive than our teacher Jesus christ
Thumbs down for trigger discipline, thumbs up for Horatio Sanz
There’s some errors here:
First of all in the description: they were not Americans, they were Texians. Texas was still owned by Mexico and had no affiliation yet with the US.
And when the war was won, Texas officially became the Republic of Texas, an independent country and not a state.
It wasn’t until years later that Texas joined the U.S. and became an official U.S. state (only state to previously be an independent country, giving us the right to secede).
Hold on there, pardner. California also entered the Union as an independent country; the Republic of California. And while Texas may have had the right to secede when we entered the Union, it was lost after the Civil War. Interestingly, we could still legally divide our state into 5 different ones if we were so inclined. Texas as a country had an embassy in London. Which is still there today, though it is now a mediocre TexMex restaurant. Whenever anybody doubts if I can accomplish some outlandish goal I always tell them, "Yes I can 'cuz I'm a TexiCAN, not a TexiCan't!" And I haven't failed yet. ;-)
Henry Cole Stage yeah except no one gives two shits about California.
Henry Cole Stage And excuse me you’re right California was a free country……...for a month. Forgive me for forgetting such a long tenured republic.
@@evanfaust8672 For a fellow Texan, you sound a little sensitive on the subject.
An Interesting Life Overland Or you know just correcting simple errors LOL
Um confused about the term Alamo defenders. Did they not first take it from the Mexicans? To whom is originally belonged. How were the Americans defending the Alamo? They were the invaders in the first place.
