The Lucifer Effect: How The World And It Systems Turn Passive People Evil - Philip Zimbardo

  • How do ordinary, passive individuals become complicit in acts of cruelty and evil? Is it their nature-or the overwhelming force of the systems and environments they inhabit?
In this hard-hitting lecture, Philip Zimbardo-creator of the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment-exposes how societal systems and situational power transform the passive into the malevolent. Drawing on real-world events, psychological research, and his groundbreaking experiment, Zimbardo uncovers the chilling truth: systemic forces, unchecked authority, and moral disengagement have the power to corrupt anyone.
🚩 Discover how the machinery of control manipulates behavior.
🚩 Question the illusion of morality and free will.
🚩 See how the passive are coerced into enabling evil through authority and fear.
If you think you’re beyond the reach of such influence, think again. Zimbardo’s revelations are a wake-up call to the dangerous intersections of psychology, societal structures, and systemic oppression.
📖 Dive deeper into the deterministic nature of human behavior and the hum of the machinery.

'Normal' people are not good. Good people don't do evil things just because the context tempts them to do so. The whole concept of 'good' is that you _resist_ temptation to be evil. People who are _currently_ behaving well because it's convenient, but will behave badly when _that_ becomes convenient are *not good.* That's not what good means.

    • @thenacregod
      @thenacregod  Місяць тому +34

No. The whole duality of good and evil is a huge scam. Without evil the concept of good has no right of existence. And people have no freewill, they are the products of this scam.

@@thenacregod Furthermore, the exigence in favor of pro-civilizational devices (moral beliefs), which are particularly strongly compelled in formative years, cultivates the lust for being seen as good, because of the means of adulation and ego stroking used.
This lust constitutes a liability when the times comes for an innate whim (such as empathy) to be suppressed. Those who are more SUCCESSFULLY trained to be good are then going to have a harder time not being an instrument in our going off the rails of our place on the naturally moving gentility trend line of history (ie facilitating authoritarian dystopias). Reverence - culturally fomented and enforced goodness - is therefore the very creators of what later gets called evil.

@@thenacregod That's what psychopaths tell themselves as they are butchering.
Your fate is to get what you want, I'm sorry to say: to be an uninhibited psychopath in a world of uninhibited psychopaths, all clawing at one another and trying to rip each others' throats out for eternity - or _hopefully_ just until you change your mind.
Because you DO have Free Will. You will get what you have chosen: A lack of any moral compunction, compassion, or restraint from the entities around you.
Just remember that others have Free Will too, and you will find yourself amongst those who have made whatever choice you have made. Like unto like.
The mechanism of this 'placing' is simply the Free Will of the good to choose, once spirits - no longer able to be tricked or compelled - to be free of those who have made the choice you have made.
That leaves you to either be alone, or to seek the eternal competition of other demons.
Once there are are no longer sheep to prey upon, wolves must prey upon wolves.
A glass half full of pure spring water and half full of poison is a glass of poison.
If you help an old lady carry her groceries on Tuesday and murder someone on Wednesday, you are evil, not neutral.
There is no neutral. If you choose evil _some_ of the time, you are evil... until you _sincerely and deeply_ repent of it, which means to condemn your misdeeds and resolve never to repeat them, which requires a change of worldview.
      This is the truth.
What you stated is called "The Luciferian Doctrine," though usually disguised with euphemisms. It self-evidently leads to self-torment and self-annihilation, _because_ if those without compunction *win,* what do they win?
They get what they want, which is to consume the weak until there are no weak left. Then they begin consuming each other until only one is left, and then that one must consume himself to escape the horror of floating eternally alone in a void - having consumed everything else.
You might want to reconsider your options.

The real problem is people don't have discernment.
Not only must you be able to tell what's right to do, but you have to have the spine to go against the grain to do it .
I guess I should feel fortunate that my life sucked so much that I have discernment and a spine.
I don't think you can get those things without a tough life

I’ll explain, no problem. Evil is the norm. Normal people are now evil. Sooner or later, everyone shows their true nature. The greater number of humans I come to know and eventually be disappointed by, the more I suspect that I may be of a different species or subspecies or a throwback to a bygone era. I suspect a pathogenic cause for the degradation/denial of the divine in human culture, morality, responsibility, and love. This subject has been the focus of my attention for a few years and I haven’t yet come up with a way to arrest the downfall of this civilization. Perhaps it must crash and burn as so many have before us.

It’s not a matter of spine; you have a lot of mechanisms in place to make sure you do what’s most energy efficient.
It’s simpler to not go against the grain, so you have to sit down and think of determinations for WHEN and WHY to go against the grain. Deciding that you’re always going to go against it is a meaningless platitude that only reveals how you’ll just do what’s convenient.

Simple statistics says that a group concensus will ALWAYS be better than 50% of the worst individual responses AND 50% worse than best of individual responses. A group concensus is valuable, bc it eliminates any possibility of doing any of the worst responses. You immediately position the group to select from the best responses. You may not get the best result, but you probably will not get one of the worst.
This is one reason that "internet answers" can be good. The collective distilled response from the internet probably will answer a question with some form of a better answer than one person alone might give. But it also can be not so good, probably it is just an answer from the better half of the responses. And it is probably not going go be the best one. Even picking answers from the most highly voted response is not great, bc 50% of the voters doing the vote ranking were from "the dumbest half", so to speak. The net result tends to be more of an average answer than the best, but it is at least from the best half of all responses.

Perhaps it is foolish for me to leave the comment I now feel inclined to leave, but I guess maybe I will (I haven't hit "comment" yet), and here goes.
I read a few comments where there seemed to be some debate over the nature of evil, for instance, whether or not it was absolute or relative, and so on, and well it seems to me that perhaps a major part of the reason why "good people" (according to J.C. "only God is good") are so susceptible to succumbing to vile inhumanity is because of a general lack of familiarity with good, presumably because it is not making its presence be perceived.
It is harder for me to say precisely what I believe evil is, and I think my favorite conception of evil is basically that is a very old intelligence, that manifests itself kind of like a mental memetic virus that parasitically infects its hosts, and "runs" on, and via these "hosts". And that it is basically a grossly flawed intelligence, far too imperfect to be incorporated into the future and divine will, but yet residual and something, perhaps somewhat chaotic, from which somethings worthy of being preserved can yet emerge.
But I don't think this "ancient, malevolent, transpersonal intelligence" is something we actually need to worry about preserving, and on the whole, I think it most closely resembles a kind of mental illness which we'd benefit greatly by overcoming and even eradicating. (It is not, in my own opinion, although I guess I could be wrong, a necessary source for growth or creativity, or some necessary balancing contrast for good, as apparently suggested by some Eastern philosophies or religions.)
But I think just the fact that perhaps some Buddhists, for example, might suggest that evil is nothing more than the "yang" of some necessary "yin yang" balance suggests that our innate understanding or recognition of evil might be as ephemeral as our understanding of, and familiarity with good.
And the thing is, well it seems to me that maybe one has to be perhaps rather exceptionally blessed to have gained familiarity with that which is actually good.
And anyway, for me, well it struck me that even though it seemed it had hidden itself away from me for what might have been my lifetime, when it did finally reveal itself to me, well one of the things that struck me was my perception that absolutely anyone, or at least virtually every human being, were they in my position, would similarly immediately and without any shadow of doubt, been able to recognize that the loving and merciful powers that I was then experiencing were unquestionably good. And it seemed to me that my very cells within my body told me so, and feelings of immense gratitude seemed to well up uncontrollably from somewhere which was somehow bound to the core of conscious existence. And anyway, for me it seemed that this was something one could not fail to notice, or fail to recognize, and that therefore, good really did exist in some absolute (at least in relation to human beings) way, rather than any relative (to who's on the other end of the stick, or to subjective or personal preferences, goals or ambitions) way.
As for actually understanding of real evil, I suppose some intimate familiarity might also be somehow necessary, although of course I strongly caution against seeking out any such familiarity. And I guess it's like you know, that to truly be able to empathize, and know what it's like to be suffer and endure torment, it seems one basically needs to suffer and endure pain and torment oneself.
Um, having been through "the metaphysical wringer" myself, I think gratitude to God, and modesty and compassion, and as desire to be able to be benevolent enough to be able to serve and be with the loving and merciful powers, is wise and enormously beneficial.
Yeah, the thing is, it seems to me that if one is basically lucky or blessed enough to be able to be healed and mended by the loving and merciful powers, then, well I'm guessing from my own experience here, but I think it tends to immediately help to draw one's attention to the presence.of a loving and merciful God, and one can not, I think, basically feel profound love and gratitude towards the source of one's life and wellbeing, and (it seems to me) that one tends to want to draw close to and serve this source of love and wellbeing, and therefore be somehow benevolent and helpful oneself.
And so, well it seems to me that once one is able to actually become acquainted or perhaps more accurately, reacquainted, with good, then, well then one basically manages to be transcended away from the pall and threat of evil.
And so it seems to me that if one is to become.acquaimted with both good and evil, it seems to me that most likely, one will first know evil, and then know good, (and have extremely little fascination with evil afterwords, and basically being beyond the reach as it were of any possible "enemies", one becomes free of malice, and one's only intent towards even the most lost of the lost, even those most full or rage, malice and hate, is to want to lend a helping hand,. If possible, to help them escape the torment they must yet somehow endure or else perish.)
And well I certainly don't want to confuse anyone here that I am, or wish to be,.any kind of saviour, - I am not so ambitious, (although I think I do genuinely desire to be benevolent, kind and helpful, and of service to, and ultimately part of, the alliance of merciful and loving powers). But of course, although I believe I am perhaps exceptionally lucky or blessed (well I certainly have been lucky anf blessed, it is the exceptionality that remains uncertain), I also recognize that I am not particularly ambitions (ah, well my "humbling" kind of involved an abandonment of my 'will",.it's a long, perhaps torturous story, but being unfamiliar with the details of my own "ordeal", perhaps a reader can avoid judging me too harshly for my lack of personal ambition), anyway, yeah, I also, well I deeply appreciate my ability to enjoy the experiences that my human body avails to me, and I am generally content to be possessed of very human desires (barring those involving the injury of others). Ok, well anyway, I am not setting out to save the world, or anything so ambitious.
That being said, and returning more to the topic of good and evil, and to more or less also wrap things up here, it occurs to me that the important thing maybe "to help the little ducklings find their way back home".
I know that might sound stupid, and I'm sure I didn't manage to say it very well here, but the idea here is that, well I don't know if having to wade through crap, or having to spend time tormented in hell might be a necessary part of the journey or not.
But it seems to me that evil doesn't last forever, and that what's actually important is managing to make it to the eternal, joyful, consciousness, - which is necessarily rather far deeper, richer and wonderful than we can imagine, but which I think I have already had a glimpse of. Our own conscious experience lives and rests within a vastly grander conscious experience, but I believe we can and will eventually be able to be part of that consciousness, to be aware, to understand and delight in a way that is denied to us now.
Ok, so I guess (despite my laziness and "modest ambitions") maybe I'm supposed contribute,.presumably in some small way, to the task of "getting the duckies home" (or maybe I was merely supposed to suggest here that that was a worthwhile goal, ) and I guess I'm done now.
Merry Christmas, cheers, peace, love and God bless

I don't believe Lucifer is to blame for evil people. People are to blame for evil people. Scapegoating is the term you would use for people blaming Lucifer. Sure, you can blame someone else for your faults, but it is exactly like your believing you will be saved by Joshua(we are not speaking Greek!) Christ. Same concept. First you believe you are evil because a devil made you do it, then you believe an innocent person being sacrificed will save you from your evil ways. I have evaluated the situation and have come to this conclusion: If there is a being that is God, and if that being is good, the good being can't then send lying spirits or evil angels to punish you because the being is now consorting with the enemy, and if the enemy is evil, said being can't be good. Because that is basically saying, you were evil and now I am going to send evil on you. Well hell, you are gonna send me on me? For example: if God punishes a set of wrongdoers for let's say worshipping idols with disease, what happens to missionaries visiting these idol worshippers who contract these punishing diseases? Or if a couple who is punished to be childless gets children thru manipulating the state? The problem with the book of Job is clear: if God can be manipulated by evil by the use of psychology, then what chance do humans have of resistance?

i feel sorrow reading this comment thread i worry there is a misguided understanding of what true evil stands for.. It is not meant to be a scapegoat. that would be a deception that would ultimately fool our soul so we are distant from seeking God. Amanda, to deminish Lucifer's strength as though his subliminal influence holds no power, though we often seek pleasure and self gratification and you know this to be true. Remember demons desire to chase after us the stronger our faith becomes. To flee and return with more spirits to tempt and grip at our flesh through our desires and flawed manifestations. To deny our flesh and fight for God's truth. Righteousness. That is the way. This is not a game of 'i'll point my finger and say he did it, i'm innocent!' For that would mean we are not sinners and all sin is Satan's, but indeed we ARE sinners and these errors are ours to be judged for. We could not find peace nor freedom from this ailment if it were not for seeking the kingdom first through atonement for our sins and the judgements that we deserve, may we be held accountable if it were not for the one who God sent down to come and pay the ultimate sacrifice. For God so truly loved us and continues to.
Do you believe Lucy has no awareness greater than the force of your energy and psychological manipulation of free will? He has been here longer than we in what, 100 years max? Do you believe in all that time through thousands upon thousands of years lying to humankind, that he would not have discovered precisely and accurately how to be the most subtle yet elegantly deceptive in disguise? We would be none the wiser until it is too late to realize we have once again sinned. Distanced ourselves from God that you might not even be sure what you have done is anything more than to sweep under the rug and forget about. A foolish belief or concept for the masses to follow blindly and ignorantly like sheep. Lies. Discernment is what you need and are graced with through prayers for guidance from the Holy Spirit. People are not to blame for evil people. EVIL is to blame for evil people. We are all God's children. We all are blessed with the grace and mercy of forgiveness if we repent. Like little children in tears, running up to apologize to our dad for breaking the vase. Or yelling at him and making our hearts harder telling him we HATE him and wish we could run away. To hold onto that firm grip of belief that your own ego should defend itself instead of surrender and submit to God for forgiveness from the wickedness of our foolish and easy to corrupt hearts. That which overwhelms and conquers our desires. That which we cannot explain yet find in all dreams and the subconscious. You have missed the significance of what Jesus Christ was sent for and I alone could not give you that insight or wisdom. As Christians we can only show you the door. It is your journey you must follow if you so choose to open it and rekindle that sensation of forgiveness and love through Him.
Please i ask you all in this comment section to consider my words not as a rebuke but as a call for your attention and reevaluation of the principles and morals in the purpose of God's word. That your faith would grow again and you would give hope a chance. Even if you cannot see it with your own two eyes. The good doesn't send lying spirits nor the third of the fallen angels upon you. The corrupt spirits do that. The good can make them flee, yet that doesn't mean they will back down without a fight and will never return. If you live comfortably in sin you would never even notice them. They would never bother you. It is only until you begin to resist them (especially your flesh) that they fight harder and harder until they either break you or you call on God for protection. Jesus for forgiveness and the holy spirit for wisdom and discernment. God was never manipulated by evil for Job's sake. God allowed Job a trial that ultimately reinforced his faith stronger than it had ever been before. He only allowed Satan to test him because God obviously knew the outcome before it even happened. Knowing our capabilities, he can fine-tune individual paths and journeys for us through his ultimate will and desire for us all. But we have to trust in him or he will not work through us.
Is it truly difficult to accept this?
There is no grey area Witchprojekt666. (really? That name?) there is only light and darkness. Naturally we live in the dark. Even space is dark. But in that darkness we have the spread of light. This is truly beautiful if seen with a different lens of perspective in it all and the energy that courses through us and all matter. The chance of resistance is the holy spirit that awakens us anew. The awareness of the price Jesus paid that we may be forgiven and welcomed back with open arms. The love that God has for us to allow our free will to choose him despite all the odds.

The sin is willfully doing harm in any way.
There's still consequences for screwing up things, but willfully hurting people and causing damage is not acceptable. You are to keep this in mind if someone is leading you to wrong.

Really makes me think this physical world only breeds lustful, wrathful, greedy, liars. Is it not possible this is what we’re really as humans supposed to be this way, and by extension truly become human, not docile sheep.

    • @japanesebreakfast4982
      @japanesebreakfast4982 Місяць тому

I think the thought process of trying to be human is actually very unhuman when you think about it. We are not just humans in a physical world. Existence has come with responsibilities and obligations to live out what society deems 'evil' or 'good' or whatever prompting these loosely defined labels to be challenged indefinitely. It is not about becoming sheeple, rather the opposite except it's useful to be a sheeple when the time is right for it, but about embracing what is not ours to adhere to, adjust and adapt to, that some folks may regard as 'evil' or 'unethical' but despite these claims going along with it anyway, and adhering to it anyway so that the single human life, a singular vessel of purity, may become a greater version of itself and benefit from the act of doing this, and in turn, benefiting others. If you don't know how to follow a leader you will never learn how to lead a follower.
Plus everyone is a liar because every person has their own perspective of what the very definition of truth is and plus everything we observe is not observed by everyone else so Fuck it, lie and lie again, there is no escape from the wretched fun house of mirrors universes we live upon. All we can do is lie and hope that someone else out there can somehow appreciate our untruthful ass...

@@japanesebreakfast4982 we and by extension all living beings behave in these ways “wrathful, greedy, and lustfull” because primordial beings need to be those things to thrive in such a chaotic and utterly cruel world. Conversely we behave and believe in “positive” morals or behaviors simply because they keep society functioning in top condition. These anti social attributes given to us by nature is as much a part of us as the pro social aspects. It is true there is no such thing as “good” and “evil” , as a thought experiment say somehow you know for certain a man is evil yet you know for certain he always abides by society’s rules to the letter, really what is he at that point.

    • @thenacregod
      @thenacregod  6 днів тому +3

Almost. That what we call survival, life and living are just concepts we label onto some perceived processes. The perceived complexities of the flora and fauna is what we call life, but there's no such thing and nothing is actually alive as we like to believe. Actually there are no such things as birth and death. Nobody and nothing is actually being born or dies. It's just an ongoing and uncut reshuffling recycle of matter/energy. No evil or tragedy and even no predator and prey. Nature doesn't care about ideas and feelings. It also doesn't have categories and classifications. all predators are also always prey and all prey are also always predators. Darwinism, traditional evolution theories and concepts such as the survival of the fittest are actually completely bs. The universe and nature are indifferent and mechanical and not busy with creation or whatever and especially not with perfecting anything. There's no goal and no plan in nature. The universe is for 99.99% just cold and empty space. Cheers!

Indefinite imprisonment or indeterminate imprisonment is the imposition of a sentence of imprisonment with no definite period of time set during sentencing. It was imposed by certain nations in the past, before the drafting of the United Nations Convention against Torture (CAT).[1] The length of an indefinite imprisonment was determined during imprisonment based on the inmate's conduct. The inmate could have been returned to society or be kept in prison for life.
