WHY I OFTEN DON'T MENTION OTHER BRANDS IN MY VIDEOS.
You may have noticed that I often don't mention the original brands that watches I am reviewing pay homage to. This is very intentional and not meant to offend you or the original brands. I lost my first channel in October 2020 which I had spent 9 months growing and invested a significant amount of money in simply because I had mentioned the original brands in some of my videos. There are people who try to use UA-cams lack of understanding when it comes to the difference between homage watches and fake watches to attack other channels and their owners and sadly I fell foul of this in 2020. This channel was also attacked recently and UA-cam deleted content simply because I had said 'subby homage' and 'Rolex homage' in two videos despite the watches in the videos being perfectly legal homage watches. Please understand that I can not afford to risk my channel so I will no longer be mentioning other brands when reviewing homage watches.

Thank you for saying it when a watch just doesn't do anything for you - it happens. Aside from the black bezel, I like the case shape; otherwise, I agree it's a bit "meh", but that's how I feel about most Citizens.
I have a large collection that includes this one, and I think it is a beautiful piece. Yes, 1.5-2mm smaller would have been preferable but the build quality is excellent and the design quite unique. Each to their own as is said repeatedly on watch channels. This one is a keeper.
6:28 - Really wasn't expecting to see how much space there was around the movement - could have easily been a few mill less diameter. Bulova Jet Star gave me the same vibe when the marketing announcements came out, though smaller at 40mm, with a nice bracelet and the 262 kHz movement.
Yup, agreed!
It will be Grandpa's favorite watch.
A mi me gustó.
I actually have the watch and like it a lot. It's a great everyday watch where the steel on black looks a bit sporty and a bit dressy where it can be worn in lots of situations. The niceness of the watch is in the bracelet and case design where it looks good on wrist. The interest in the dial is that it has some depth and steel indices can really sparkle. It's also very comfortable and easy to wear. It's a bit minimalist perhaps, but I've gotten plenty of compliments on it. Buy hey, most people I know are wearing Apple watches these days, including steel bracelet versions....
In terms of size, well its fine for me and I have smaller vintage inspired pieces. I think Citizen know their customers and this fits in with a modern sensibility. Reminds me of the 35mm PRX - the watch enthusiasts were screaming for it, but no one actually buys or wears one (I see the 40mm everywhere).
Its weakness is probably legibility and lack of lume. Slightly bigger and squarer hands would have been nice, like on some of the Series 8 Citizens. Actually, this look reminds me of many of the Series 8's....a bit minimalist, but somehow retro / modern.
6 months in, its reliable and well-built too. Not for everyone, perhaps, but it does its job and has its niche.
I think 42.6mm is just about fair for this kind of case design and lug to lug. Although, I wouldn't mind if it was 40mm. As for the battery life, well, it's perfect for where I live at least. My old Promaster BN0200 actually got the "low power indicator" once in winter, because I had worn it under a sweater or a jacket most of the time for many months. This eliminates that. The power reserve holds all the way around till next summer, and I simply more or less have to think about it getting any light whatsoever, it's going to get it before it runs out anyways. I hope to see more of this movement in other cases though, maybe some promasters if it is tough enough. Even though it looks ugly/disappointing, I don't mind the fact that it is surrounded by a plastic shell, as I think it will help with thermal shock, which I suspect is what have killed both my Orient Mako (Seiko-derived movement) and Certina DS Action Precidrive (Swiss HAQ). Meanwhile, my Promaster BN0200 went through the exact same rough arctic weather usage, and was completely fine.
I just wish Citizen UK would give us their top end watches.
Looking very forward to the finishing comparison video you announced!
While lasting a year in a box from a full charge might seem unnecessary - I guess the potential of it still keeping time kept in a box after approx 3 months on an approx 25% charge is the benefit (approx cos battery science).
When I do a stint of wearing my solar gshock, the battery level stays low - rarely gets up to medium. My sleeve covers it most of the time! So I've gone to wear it a few times but had to sit it in the sun / light to give it some juice. Power saving mode wasn't effective enough
Awesome finally somebody did a proper review on this one. Big fan of Citizen, and the E365 movement is phenomenal but I wish it had at least a couple jewels but if it’s functional and reliable it’s alright with me. I think it’s a bit pricey overall, sapphire glass, and a decent bracelet, finishing is really good, brushed edges thanks to your video, but half links over micro-adjust is never a plus in my opinion. I think I’m getting the whole collection regardless because it’s obtainable and I’d rather these over a proper luxury watch from Rolex/Cartier. 🤷🏻♂️ I do like it despite the shortcomings, just a great daily beater with some class and vintage appeal.
I’m sure we’d get same results from Jody at one more watch, it’s just a mediocre, not bad, not great GADA watch. Boring in his book I’d imagine. 🤷🏻♂️
I just get the feeling that Citizen exists outside the "watch enthusiast" world. Great technology with the eco-drive....but rarely that exciting or interesting. Oh, well...
So nice to know I’m not alone. Now you know how I feel 24hours a day, every day.
That all-black stealth version looks pretty sweet! But for £399 it should have an automatic movement under the bonnet.
Echo your sentiments on this - I saw it at the end of last year in my local watch shop and was so disappointed, I had almost ordered it blind from Sakura...I was expecting something with a real wow factor but it just seems way off on the proportions and I don't think the crystal does a good job with AR. Enjoyed the video 🙂👍🍻
I think the 'disappearing hands' are a feature rather than a failure. Especially when the watch is viewed by people around you and the hands miraculously appear and disappear. The sparkly dial is attractive too and I wonder how that looks under different lighting conditions. However, the lack of lume is a puzzling omission and limits the watches usability which seems to oppose the super battery life and 100 metre water resistance.
I really like the starry night sky look to the dial ,its different and I like it ,but not enough to buy
Nice video ,thank you
Case size is related with dial size which is related with size/number of light detectors which offers extremely efficient charging (365 days!).
Citizen use no jewels movements for decades and they are still working fine.
The case finish is great, but the black bezel is too much of a contrast and kills the overall design IMO. Would have preferred an automatic movement too
I'm not into the sparkly dial either. This isn't the Bulova jetstar you were looking for
I'm desperate to buy a Jetstar but I'm so wary of Bulova , for whatever reason they seem to be trashing their own brand name ,, I bought the moon watch as I felt it should be in my collection and as a design its nice , but I rarely wear it , its just a bit off in terms of wearability.
I dont fancy forking out another huge amount on a jet star only to keep it in the glass cabinet.
Bulova have to be the most disappointing brand when it comes to their heritage , whoever has control doesn't seem to understand watch design.
@@steve10 Absolutely, they do seem to be a game of two halves, I like the Lunar pilot, jetstar, and the devil diver, but everything else just seems to be completely mental, I don't understand their brand identity. I would like the three I mentioned, but I can't justify more watches, and they just don't call to me enough.
Thanks for calling this out.
Poor Gary! I feel you man - I love Citizen as a brand and eco drive is a great engine, but so many of their dial designs appear flat and lifeless in-hand. Such a shame.
If Citizen would just buy Tinex’s design department, and commit to the ethos of ‘we don’t make cases the size of old timey Buick hubcaps’…
It is a big boy, agree too big. Like you I like the more expensive one with the gold n red indices, put off on that one by the big price. Thanks for your reveiw.
I love citizen watches they are amazing I love watching your videos and that watch looks great on. You
Looks about par on course for Citizen , solid, will last you a lifetime or two, but it’s a love that gets you over time. Anyway, agree with your criticisms except as to size. Perfectly reasonable to me.
G yes - a thank you from me too! Did see that “ripple” and it had sparked some interest with me but hadn’t seen much more about it since then. But definitely a dud for me but you saved me the expense.
I have the Promaster Tough on order as there was a good deal going for that and I had been twitching about it for some time.
Hope that you at least got it for a decent price.
HNY and v best
G
Glad it helped!
I think it’s a nice watch. Not very exciting but looking forward to the comparison! Thanks!
Thanx for showing us this watch. Its very expensive and you purchased it with your own money so I appreciate it. I like some Citizen watches. I do not like this model at all. I do not like the way the bracelet attaches to the case. I do not like the crown. I do not like the visibility of the dial. I do not like the size of the watch case. Its way too big. It should have been 37 or 38mm wide at the most.
I remember seeing this when it was announced. I find the case shape and angles interesting plus the recessed crown. The gold n ruby looks the best but just too pricey in comparison to radio controlled Seiko n Oceanus you have reviewed
Yes, they are much better watches!
£400 is a bit strong, without that bezel and a meh movement , £150 ?
My first reaction was: Wow! I want one. Then you mentioned the size...
I know! It's a good sizer for a few people but I think most would appreciate a little less girth!
Yeah, love the styling but the unnecessary size & bracelet kills this for me.
If its an extended life solar quartz movement...it would of been really cool if the seconds hand ticked 4 times per second.
You are right, way too big.....
An opportunity missed. The bracelet is ok, the black bezel is hideous but I think that case is very nice and cries out for some sort of 50s-60s-retro-futuristic dial and hands.
I like it .
Thnx for your independent review,
it was not nessesary that your said you didn't real like the watch, your voice was already clear enough😊.
When there was a Ali brand on the dail i believe it also.
I think that no microbrand has the nerve that they come with this model.
Be glad that you don't buy that expensive bling bling thing
😅
As boring a design as the CITIZEN font 😂 Good video regardless. Cheers.
I agree about size. What is wrong with 35mm to 38mm sizing?
Lovely watch
Love the case shape and bracelet. I don't care for the movement. I'd prefer automatic. Or even better if they created a high beat rate eco drive. Also I think they missed with the black bezel....
Can't wait till he gives this away 😂.... I will defo enter as a Citizen fan
Within a second of the watch coming out of the box, my expectations fell away. Then, basically, you said the same thing. I think the black bezel killed the overall design.
Looks like Citizen made a space baby with a Rado.
Yeah.
"Meh?".
Next 3 years will see a difference in but now they are hardly trying.
They'll do fancy dials with poor quality bracelets charge too much.
I don't feel anything either
I think it looks killer
I really like eco drive watches, I don't see the point of this one though. Now, if it was a no date and atomic radio, that would be the ultimate grab and go (once a year) watch...
Can you make comparison video about watches with sweep second quartz movement?
I no longer have the watches I owned sadly
I really like it and would pay the asking price. However, there would be other watches in my list that i would buy before it.
Seems like a solid piece overall for 400 bucks. Finishing and quality looks solid, and I trust the movement to be accurate and rock solid, and with decent second-hand alignment, I can't really ask for more. It sure seems like a chuncky/substantial piece of steel. I can imagine that's a plus for some (many mention it is). It's down to personal taste. But I could agree that this characteristic might be a bit "off", together with this design, so to say. But it is what it is. I'm not going to buy something like this, but I certainly wouldn't scuff at someone doing so either.
I feel your disappointment Gary, it happens too often with Citizen and Seiko, with a few tweaks it could be brilliant but they just choose to churn them out anyway,
Sapphire at least but why not add a decent sized screw in crown as well?, add a bigger hand set with decent lume and we would be getting somewhere, I would love it if they improved or reimagined the Ray Mears promaster tough for instance, probably their best offering I have ever seen from Citizen.
The dial and bezel look pretty good ,the case not so much .The bracelet does it for me nicely done decent clasp obviously can't feel it but it looks ok.
It's just the case shape that would put me off I know it's retro but still...
Like you said, it's far too big for that type of watch. 38mm would have been about right. The black bezel is indeed quite horrible
Truly, taste is relative, as the cannibal said when he ate his cousin. I'm with you, Gary - wouldn’t drool over this if it had 200m of water resistance. Cheers 🍻!
Nah. Thanks for the video though!
Always a pleasure!
I like the style, but agree looks to be too big and heavy for what it is, 40mm or a bit under and within 150g would have been much better
Yeah, its dive watch weight and you feel every gram
The size makes this an immediate no. Solar movements are nice but aren't in themselves a strong selling point .
I think it’s beautiful. It would be perfect that 38mm though.
Whole Citizen/Bulova lineup needs to lose ~4mm to make sense with modern size expectations. Have you seen the Star Wars chronos that weigh in at 45.5mm?
Looks terrific
I got excited about it's looks too but in hand it's not that exciting sadly
@@ilikewatches I don’t like small watches so it looks fine from my perspective.
That bracelet could do with a bit of a taper I think.
Yeah, this should be at 38 mm maximum. At 42 mm it's ridiculous and looks like a slab rather than something that could've been worn 45-50 years ago. That black bezel also ruins the nice angular shapes it has going for it too.
Yep, that black bezel is a complete no go for me. Think the watch would have been better suited with a highly polished plain SS bezel but that's just me.
i like a lot of the new timex releases
Yeah I agree , I sold my timex watches as the brand was a bit poor compared to higher end watches I've been collecting.
However recently I've been looking at some of their watches and actually have them on my list of watches I'd like to buy.
Not sure if the connection with the UFC has made them start making better watches (although I'm not keen on those actual ufc watches themselves) but something has happened where some of their watches have really been nicely designed , although I have noticed the price creeping up a little, hopefully they won't become a nice watche designs but not worth the price type of brand.
Dig a hole in the garden and pop it in.
I have yet to get any tingles from a Citizen, any new one at least
It's okay, not bad, but hmmm, at least they're trying 😅
Seiko would have made it a limited edition to 10000 pieces and charged double the price...(I'm exaggerating, of course, but that's all I seem to hear about from them now)
To get more tingles they definitely need more retro colorways. This looks a bit boring from the get go.
But like someone else pointed out some watches just don't do it for us.
Great new movement, but why did they put it into a fashion watch? 😬🙄
The black bezel is a deal breaker for me.
Yeah, not really my cup of tea.
Citizen do have a bit of a sizing problem, they always could do with being a mm or two smaller pretty much across the board
More like 2-4mm honestly. The Citizen/Bulova catalog as a whole could stand to lose a few pounds. We don't need 45mm+ monsters that wear the owner instead of the owner wearing the watch. They're badly stuck on 00's sizing.
I've been wondering how the SBTM 323 bracelet is holding up in terms of whether or not you're feeling 'forced' to swap it for a strap? 😊👍
No, the whole watch is awesome
@@ilikewatches Good to know, I think it's a gem in the current JDM Seiko range. I wonder how good the more expensive SBTM 341 is with textured dial, and milled clasp on a fancier bracelet!?
It’s titanium too…looks incredible…I suspect it is incredible
Wait, what's that battery doing there? Even if it's rechargeable, the lifespan of the battery itself is 3-5 years tops. I.e. way shorter than non-solar 10y regular battery watches. I thought solar watches used supercapacitors, not chemical batteries. Can we get a macro shot of the battery?
Looks like a plastic bezel to me , not for me
From some angles it's very nice and 1970s. Those are very few and far get unfortunately. And a bit to pricey for what you get.
A few shekels more can buy a Bulova Jet Star, a better 40mm 70's styled watch with the Precisionist high beat.
I think it looks quite cool. Why did they put such a junk movement in it?
Another Citilova blah release. Would it be that much better it was 39mm with an automatic movement?
They would probably be asking $700.00 for it then.
Ooofff no thx.
The watch is too symmetrical, and thus boring. The date window does not break the symmetry strongly enough, I guess. Art is all about breaking symmetries. As George Bernard Shaw allegedly said: "Symmetry is the enemy of art".
Does nothing for me either IMO one or two quarts are enough.
i think it'll grow on me
Great review. Yeah, meh. Will look like hell if/when black bezel gets scratched…
Definitely a 70s feel. Technically impressive but it does nothing for me either.
A bit of a lemon this one.
I like citizen , but this looks so old fashioned , and not in a retro way that's cool.
I used to like big watches when I first got into watches but as time goes by I've hit the 40mm sweet spot.
Even though this is only 42.6mm apparently, it looks so much bigger , everything about it looks clumsy, and I think the black cheap looking bezel makes it look even bigger.
For the price its an absolute waste of money imo.
Hugely disappointing and concerning going forward when you think it's 2024 and this is the new watch citizen have made.
I'm surprised they made it a screw back case , I would have thought they wouldn't want you to see it 😂
Does nothing for me, the gold and ruby version at least has that gaudy 70’s style thing going for it but it’s a no for me.
It looks like a 50 euro watch looks cheap if your into watches like. This get the bulova jet star
They missed bad with this one. It is an ongoing issue for me with Citizen. None oof their watches give me that fizz.
Honestly, I don't quite get why you're so disappointed with this watch. OK you're right about the size, I also would like this to be a little smaller. But that said I sat nicely on your wrist. And I'd rather have a substantial watch with a solid bracelet and clasp than the flimsy stuff you often get from Seiko at this price point.
sparkly dial, feels heavy at 163g, don't like the black bezel, crown feels cheap, not enough taper on the bracelet, poor legibility, small hands, almost 43mm wide, no lume, only half links no actual micro adjustment, second hand is a little floppy, don't like eco-drive on the dial, massive plastic movement holder, no jewels in the movement, polishing is a little streaky, AR coating seems weak. Hope that helps :)
@@ilikewatchesAll of this, plus an aventurine dial, for just 380 quid...😉
4:00 freeze it there and tell me what time it says?
If you can't always tell the time, it's a failure to me. ☺
Is it adventurine?
Good review of a wildly mediocre watch! lol 😊
Is it an aventurine dial?
No sadly
A bit of a plopper in my opinion!
Not one for me I'm afraid......
A massive missed opportunty 😕
A $70 watch for HOW MUCH??? Cheers!
If you don’t like the looks of this watch (neither do I), then why did you buy it? The online shop’s images are good enough (although not perfect), to see the difference between what’s looking good or bad. A little bit silly, I think…
I loved the pictures, in hand not so much and I buy these things to review for you…no one else is reviewing it
Not for me and too expensive to boot.
ridiculous size, as usual with citizen
