--------
In this clip, Smokey Robinson talks about growing up in Detroit, during a time when many of his friends were dabbling into criminal mischief and involved in gang activity. He reveals that the police shot and killed a friends of his for attempting to break in a car. From there, he recalls a horrific fight that stemmed from a baseball game among Black kids and White kids that led to bloody brawl involving baseball bats. He said the fight was such a bad experience that it prompted him to stop fighting all together. Later in the conversation, he talks about his approach to parenting in regards to peer pressure.
Mad respect for Smokey for his words and I couldn’t agree more! Anyone who doesn’t want to be your friend because you don’t want to do something that they want you to do that you’re not comfortable with, was NEVER your friend! Point blank, PERIOD! That part! 💯
True
It's how you look it at though. Sometimes that's your fault because your acting like you got that same level of loyalty of those around you. When it comes to crunch time and you crumble, you cant be that mad that the people you was acting a certain way with are disappointed in you when you moved like you had it in you when you didn't
@@shadychris3402 True, but it's better to get scared at the last minute and not do wrong. Jesus allows for u-turns, even if your friends won't.
@@shadychris3402 playing fake tuff and folding last minute is different than not being in the streets but still having street friends.
Legend
Smokey was born during a rough time in America. God bless him. Living legend
It's a testarment to his mental strength that he prevailed despite the overwhelming odds. Smokey is the kind of old head I could sit next to and listen to him talk for hours about his past experiences.
Smokey wasn’t born during a rough time in America; he was born and raised in Detroit which was a rough place.
A true rough time. Actual systemic racism.
Yeah he did during real racism and segregation not this generation of woke black liberals that keep this fake racism lie bein told by white and black liberal media and black liberal race hustlers and blm con artists thst do nothing for blacks 🤣🤣 this generation can’t handle what they ancestors and grandparents and great grandparents went through growing up in that era now blacks in this generation make up racism and use it for a excuse to play victims of society 🤦🏾♀️
@@TheRealDyscyples he knows that just just trying to make it seem like what Smokey went through is happening today and it’s not and blacks in this generation know it the blm hustlers have really brainwashed this generation of black people🤣🤣
Smokey dropping that old man wisdom.
You dont need to be old to have that kind of wisdom.

Wisdom.
@@kzfive eeh a lot of wisdom comes with age as long as you learn from situations you end up in
My grandfather used to say that the measure of a man is being able to tell his friends no when they want him to do something wrong.
My grandfather would say he who chooses to do right, when there is no one to see them do wrong, is a good man...
He said that well
You can tell he’s at peace with himself knowing how to pick and choose his battles, every fight dosen’t have to be physical, and if you learn that at a young age, you can learn how to walk away from situations that could turn deadly

@Riley Mays right. I suspect most those old timers are protected in the manner you say.
For example. Touch Auntie Gladys. Or Auntie Pattie.
Regardless of where it happens. OGs in the city it happened would greenlight that dude in a second.
Not many of us condoned his personal behavior when HE BECAME AN ADULT AND A PROFESSIONAL SINGER (Of you know what I mean.😉)

“Don’t come to me about peer pressure ion believe in it” realest words I’ve heard 💯
This man is recalling memories from 70 years ago. That's crazy to me cause I'm not even 30 yet 😂
His mind is still sharp.
There a lot of old people that arent senile... sure there a lot that are but there are a lot that are not... my great grand mother was 99 years old and still sharp mentally until the day she died. Everybody doesnt die from dementia...
Some people just have a good memory. I'm like that. I remember everyones name. My co-workers say that's my Superpower. I know the Doorman, the Indian at 7-11, his son, I even remember peoples pets names. Just tell me one time and I will never forget it. I used to get annoyed when people didn't remember things, but as I got older, I realized that they are the majority.
@@joyell821 I used to get annoyed too when people would forget things, but then i started forgetting everything as i got older and now I understand. And im only 25 ...
Damn the man is 82 not 102. I come in contact with plenty of 80ish yr.olds that can still hold a conversation and their mind is still sharp. Clint Eastwood 92,Morgan Freeman 85,AL Pacino 81,Rita Moreno 89 all still acting.
Man, Smokey needs a biopic. It needs to be done while he is still here. John Legend would be perfect to play Smokey.
Terrance Howard can't sing but I believe he could pull off Smokey Robinson also
Hell no!!!
@@BruceDragon-sf1tr facts cos terrance even played jackie in the jackson 5 movie so i'm sure he can do this too
I think Donald Glover would kill it
John going to go to acting classes?
That is exactly how it was in my house when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s living in Detroit. Also, this one knowing what you know "Don't call me to bail you out of jail for any nonsense!"
My mama used to stay saying that lol I'm from Florida tho
One of the greatest singer,
songwriter,and producers of all time.
Smokey, has been wise, all of his life! He knew, at a very young age to lead by example! Wisdom, is a learned behavior! Love his stories about life! ❤️
When he said he grew up wit sum gangstaz he meant it💯
Props to Mr. Robinson, some of the best parental advice ever - there would be no space for excuses for your actions. My parents told me something similar about “…jumping off a bridge, just because ‘so and so’ did it or said to do it -would break my neck and not theirs.” The thought stayed with me and helped steer clear of peer pressure.
I was raised by my mom .....my dad died of a heart attack when I was eleven ......when it comes to being with a bad crowd ......my mom always said ......life will show you better than I can tell you .....many of the kids I was raised with either went to jail .....or the graveyard ......but never once did I get in trouble with the law.
I swear hearing this man talk has me sitting up straight in my computer seat and I'm listening with intention as if he was a grandparent or great uncle or something lol haha heck at the end I thought I was being scolded like I was one of his kids or something
hear ya
Smokey Robinson is a Vampire bro…
Grow up.
Him Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield were the underrated heros of the 70s
Smokey was out here putting paws on folks,🤗He was so young, I was the littlest thing in my hood, never ever started anything, but stayed ready to lay paws on on somebody if it came to it,thank the Lord for growth and maturity, this gentlemen is so wise and extremely talented.
He's right about that YOU EITHER WANTED TO DO IT or YOU DON'T and that peer pressure is a poor excuse to say YOU DID IT..
We need you to interview Stevie Wonder and then Ron Isley
@phoenixleo4202 a very good point but these black platforms I only focusing on this generation all the previous generation they're not looking to tell the stories of the ones that laid the foundation sorry to say Vlad is
The good ol days when using bats was considered crazy.
Need to interview Otis Williams vlad I bet he has some good stories
If you was on the phone with Smokey Robinson you would swear it’s Michael Jackson on the other end 😂🤦🏾♂️💯
Such a wise man and a true living legend! I grew up with the same outlook and raised my kids with the same advice about peer pressure. My friends got into lots of trouble and they would ask me to go along. I declined most of the time but they understood and were still my friends no matter what. The few times I chose to tag along, I knew full well if something went down, I was responsible for my actions, not my friends. If any clown wouldn't be my friend if I didn't help them do dirt, I casually dismissed them. I had enough real friends, didn't need any fake ones.
Had a young friend when I worked at UPS .....he was on probation ....and said he was tired of getting into trouble with his homeys .....I told him the best way to stay out of trouble was to change the people he hung out with ......but he went to a party .....got drunk and was sleeping in his friends car when they decided to rob a filling station ......when the cops stopped the car .......he woke up in trouble .
the way smokey said "i grew up with some gangsters" you can tell he seen a lot
I'm confident that he's seen stuff that he'll take to his grave and not speak about.
Vlad you have it did you self with getting Smokey !! Ima young dude and can appreciate this history lesson
Old school period! Vlad not gonna be able to ask Smoking just any question and get him to be a chatty patty. Men of his generation are of a different breed.
Mr. Robinson gave some of the best advice on friendship and peer pressure! I absolutely love Smokey Robinson, he is a National Treasure and a musical genius ❤
Legendary interview. Thank you Vlad for this one.
One of the best lessons you can ever lean is to not respond to peer pressure or be a follow. Especially in the hood !
Vlad thank you for the history of my great-uncle, and for all the comments in this group thank you for the positive response. Yes my uncle is very wise young man and I love him.
How he said he spoke to his children is how my Grandmother spoke to me. I love that old school way.
I saw his breakfast club interview. He needs to write a book. His life was really something.
He wrote a biography in 1989 called “Inside my life”.. Its real good
@@shannyn85 He needs to write an autobiography a biography couldn't be written by him.
I didn't have peer pressure, I had parent pressure. When my "friends" tried to get me to do stuff I knew my parents finding out would be 10X worse.
More interviews like this would be nice. Trying to make it in the 1950s and anything before the civil rights movement was a lot tougher.

Kudos to Smokey he didn't get mixed up in that mess growing up
Smokin that smooooooke!!!
😂 best video ever
Real real legend. Can I say it again. Thank you Smokey you created masterpieces. Shoutout from BK NY
As a kid, I went on many trips with family to visit an uncle in San Quentin, and his younger brother in juevenile camps, throughout California. This was from the late '50s through most of the '60s. The thing that stood out for me was that, I would be away from the girls if I was locked up! Eff that!
Smokey said, I started packing 🔫 after that 😂😂
His memory is impressive.
Vlad: Interviews one of the great living songwriters alive.
Also Vlad: Lets talk in depth about the juvenile delinquent behavior you experienced growing up in the ghetto.

You had to look up his net worth, for validation?🙄

@Dorian Marquis Don't act like you've never looked up someone's networth. Validate these nutts why don't you 🤣
Some people don't value money as making someone a good person. Those that do are clowns
Smokey should have probably earned far more for the amount of hit song who wrote for people.
Old school black wisdom that seems to be missing from many of our homes and neighborhoods.
He has so much wisdom
Legend is a understatement when it comes to Smokey !
American Treasure… much respect 🙏🏾
I can listen to smokey talk all day.
Me too. I has a lot of life experience.
Impeccable Memory... .
WISDOM! IF you gotta do wrong to be around certain people then they are not your friends or for you!
Smokey done already told y'all before, he ain't with all that "GAAANGBAAANGINNNN!🎶 🎵 " 😆😆

Love me some Smokey one of my all time favourites, great interview and message! What a class act 👏🏿🌹🙏🏿💯
Damn I'm mad he sitting down to give this knowledge to Vlad of all ppl...but goddammit...Drink Champs, Joe, Godfrey, All Def, 85 south....ain't none of them invited the OG yet so....can we really be mad? I'm sure Vlad made a nice offer and is giving this man the chance to speak freely.
My sentiments exactly... How did they let glad beat them out at grabbing this legend
Lets be real those guys dont have that vlad money to just be throwing at a legend like smokey knowing you might not even get your money back with todays audience being largely uninformed about smokey, vlad has had enough profitable interviews to atleast take a loss on this one if needed.
Fat joe and drink champs probably got the money but not the money to blow persay
I like drink champs but this interview wouldnt be good with them lhh nore would be drunk as hell interrupting em the whole time 😂
@@guuaaappp2183 facts and smokey would just be plugging his wine brand the whole time
Smokey has too much class for any of those podcasts you mentioned...even VLAD really, which is why it's surprising he came on here ...but whatevs, I'm here for it.
But some of those other clowns, Let them stay with the hip-hop part of the culture. Smokey is part of our 'REAL' culture.
We fall under peer pressure because our friends call us scared, a punk, or a coward because we didn't go with them to do something wrong. They say they ain't your friends if they do those things, or say that stuff.
Baby let's cruise
I wanted to hear more details about that brutal fight man.
Don't let them Green Eyes fool you
Vlad, thanks. This guy was always an OG in my book.
Brought in the great Smokey Robinson…. To talk about the drama, robberies etc etc I thought this was only subject to rappers. Vlad really is infatuated with crime. I wonder if he’s gonna ask him if he’d ever snitch, or how he feels about the YSL case, and if he thinks gunna will still be relevant. I wonder if he’s gonna flashback boosie
Lol boosie flashback 😂 then hes gonna ask em about his gangbangin' song
I would normally agree but this is just a small clip it’s probably gonna be a 1 or 2 hour interview where he asks plenty of other things. For him to mention this info I’m guessing maybe Smokey had said it in autobiographies before so I don’t see the issue. Now if he keeps on going back to it every second then yeah it’s an issue but if it’s a small section I don’t see the issue
So far, I've noticed, Vlad has let Smokey tell the stories behind the question without interruption.
Yep, I agree with his points about peer pressure because I told a whole bunch of people no I ain't doing that and they would stop hanging with me.
Smokey is so right. The fools who put peer pressure on you will be the same ones who'll let you take the hit for something that THEY did and try to go free.
Wow a Smokey interview. This is BIG
I love Smokey Robinson ❤️
Detroit OG
I would love to see the full interview.
One of my favorite interviews so far!
Smokey has alot of wisdom, because of all the stuff he dealt with, and all the stuff he's seen.
