My grandfather had a similar situation. My grandfather beat a white deputy that disrespected my grandmother. That was easily common in the 1940's. The deputy was the son of the police chief in there inTexas. My grandfather wasn't from Texas. The police were familiar with my grandmother's family, so they knew where to find them. So, with that in mind, both my grandmother and my grandfather had to pack up immediately, and leave Texas. My GMA passed 3 years ago she was about to be 94 she was the second youngest of 6 her father came over on one of the last slave ships. She never talked about him. I wish I could've heard some of the things she knew about him. My mama was born in 1954 in Ga, her oldest sister is Smokey's age so talking to her and her siblings is like living through history. She actually recently told me my pops used to serve to smokey and his crew when they used to come to town 🤣.

When you grow up poor in the hood, in a big family , there is a closeness and love, so you don’t realize you are poor until you leave. That’s very true, Smokey said it well…my hood was the south Bronx, my family was 8 people in a 2 bedroom apartment in one of the toughest projects in New York City, but we had each other and our parents raised us rich in decency , so I didn’t realize we were poor until I left .

Mannn this story about his father is similar to what my grandfather went through. Back in the 1930's, my grandfather was at this lake fishing for the family. When 3 white men came up and just started beating on him. My grandfather always carried a knife on him. He sliced one or two of the white men. He took off for the house. He walked in just covered in blood. My grandmother asked what happened?! He told her. My grandmother said she knew he couldnt stay there. Because it was just matter of time before a posse would be coming to look for him. My grandmother said she fixed him some sandwiches and packed his few rags. And told him he had to leave. This was back in Georgia. He left and was never seen or heard from again for 10 yrs. My grandmother said that white posse did show up. They kicked in the door and beat the hell out of her.. Trying to get her to tell where my grandfather was. She said they slapped her around and spat in her face. My grandmother told me this story when I was 8 yrs old. I remember crying like a baby. And from that point on I had this hate for white folks. But my grandfather did return back to Georgia. He had took off for Detriot and started a whole new family there. My grandmother said that when he returned he was not the same man. He was abusive to her and the kids. She packed up and moved north. Providence R.I.
