Just picked up a 2005 330i ZHP with 102k miles. Binging these videos in hopes of keeping the ride clean and maintained. So helpful for a newbie mechanic like myself.
I would recommend buying the 36mm socket for the oil filter housing cap because it is made out of plastic and the edges wear down easily with a wrench. Top notch videos mate. You're like the Khan Academy of E46 ownership.
Minor quibble - the filter is usually installed into the cap (until it clicks), and then screwed into the housing as a complete unit. Probably won't make a difference, but "cap first" is considered best practice.
Great video. One item/feedback. Use 36mm socket. Easy to use and if you are going to change oil often, it will pay for itself. Using the adjustable wrench can easily damage the Cap, will cost a lot more to replace that compared to buying a 36mm socket. For me it worked out well as I have a Range Rover with M62 BMW motor and same 36mm socket works on that too.
Jason. Thank you for teaching us how to re-set the service miles. I did not know how to do that. I changed the oil yesterday and I just let the service miles go, cause I did not know how to re-set it. Thank you. I have learned lots, all because you are a great citizen. When you decided to help BMW owners to save money by DIY means. I wish I new how to send you a few bucks for all you do for me. I have ask you how to get in touch with you. But nothing I received. God Blessed you Jason. Tonio Castro.
Hey bud thanks I know you put these videos out 7 years ago but I just bought my son his first car Its a bmw 2005 325i but it had allot of leaks and I’ve watched allot of your videos to get information, replace parts and fix these things so just want to say I appreciate your videos man thanks.
Just changed my oil myself, Pennzoil Platinum 5w30, it took all 7 qts, I was taking to BMW dealership that had 70 dollar oil changes, but moved and all the ones out here want 150 plus, but the last oil change I got was at the dealer and there was no drain plug gasket🤦♂️ wasn't leaking so there ya go, 16,700 miles and it's brown, not black😎 Have the tie rods coming in, and probably gonna have to replace a rear cv axle. But I think putting new shocks all around just encouraged whatever parts were getting weak to just go out. Still drives like a champ, only slight vibrations, and you've been helping me through most if not all these issues👍
Mate your videos are brilliant. I'm watching from the UK and you've literally saved me so much money and I've learned so much about my E46 from you. Thank you and resect 👍
great video. however i have one issue with your procedure. i actually cracked my filter housing cap by trying to remove it with an adjustable wrench as you have done. luckily i had another one in my shed. but i had to go to my local mechanic and borrow a 36 mm socket in order to get it off at all. i would recommend to anyone doing this to always use a socket to remove the filter housing cap.
daniel garcia thats wassup. I go to see a ‘03 325i 100k miles. Rwd. Hes asking 3k. Content with buying at 3k but ima still try an talk him down if possible. :)
Clifford Eugene Cheap car too bro not gonna lie.. look up the same car on OfferUp or Facebook market and I bet you won’t find the same car with that mileage and same price bmw are expensive
THANK YOU SOO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS PLEASE DONT STOP MAKING VIDEOS LIKE THIS ONE. SOO HELPFUL SO DETAILED AND WELL EXPLAINED YOU ARE AMAZING THANK YOU SOO MUCH 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
i think I've watched every video you've done, you have given me so much knowledge on my new purchase. just wanted to say THANKS +50sKid! and if I have any issues or questions you will be my first go to guy.
This is just what i have been looking for as my daughrter has just brought a 325, and its me that will have to service it etc. Thanks, i will be checking out your other videos.
My personal preference for 'tire wear' estimation is when the belts spark in the dark off the line it's time to think about new ones. :D SERIOUSLY: Thanks for reminding me of all the things I should be paying close attention to 50sKid. Well done vid.
Greta video in my faves. I'm looking into buying one that I been eye balling from a good neighbor. A 2002 330i with Sport Package 42000 miles. hardly gets used so this will really help as I want to do my own inspection.
Thanks again for an awesome video. I have a couple questions. First of all I have a 2003 330i e46 BMW 1. My first question is: I know I to have to jack up the car to get under it but, is it ok to change the oil with only the front end elevated. I do not have the ability to jack all four tires off the ground. Basically, I'm wondering if the oil will drain properly. 2. It looks like there was a cover over your drain plug area. Will my car I have the same cover? Also, thanks again for answering some of my questions about another video you posted. With the help of one of your other videos, I'm going to try to tackle my check engine light this weekend. I'm getting the "P0174 Bank to system to lean confirmed". I already replaced the bad vacuum hose from the fuel filter up into the engine and thought that fix the problem but the light came on again with the same code. Thanks again and know that you are helping a lot of people out.
+pearlmcp Yeah it'll drain just fine--better, in fact, by just raising the front wheels. If you still have the cover, that would be amazing. Some how they just seem to disappear, lol.
+50sKid hi again. What did you used to jack up your car with? I have borrowed a low-profile 2 1/2 ton jack but when I put it under the car it's not long enough that I could actually pump it up. Do you have some other means or what type of Jack do you use? Thanks again.
He mentioned that leaving the oil cap off will cause a vacuum leak. Does that mean my P0174 (running lean code) came on because of that? It came on after I got done with changing my oil and driving for 10 miles or so
I just went 6.5 months and 21k miles between oil change on my 04 325i, I gave it 2 qts during that time, half a quart at a time, when the oil lamp comes at ignition off, indicating half quart low, it still looked good😆
hi 50skid..pls guide with choosing oil..i m totally confused..these are the options 1. 5w-30 synthetic but not ll-01(mobil,castrol) 2.5w-40(b3/b4..bmw ll-01)recommended by stores 3. castrol 0w-30 european formula(also ll-01) 4. castrol 0w-40 european formula cannot find a 5w-30 ll-01.thank you..pls help.2002 bmw 325i 2.5 m54
You're overthinking it a little bit. All you need is any synthetic oil that meets API-N (America) or GL-5 (Europe) specifications. 5w30 is the best all around oil for most climates--if you get cold winters, find a 0w oil.
Use LL-01 in your BMW. You can use any oil selector on any oil site like Pennzoil or Castrol and they all say LL-01. Doesn't matter if it's 5w30 or 0w40 as long as it meets LL-01.
I thought those o rings came in my oil filter kit but was super annoyed when I took them off hardened and snapping then realised I only had drain plug washers and a exterior o ring
wow this is very helpful. My 2004 321i only has 45 k miles and I know it's not worth selling. Thinking about purchasing a used bmw 325i wagon or 2005 m3.
Would it not make sense to hoover the dust out of the air and cabin filters when inspecting them? I never do, but now thinking it might make sense. Would it?
looks like you need more air in your tyres. I would say 45psi to get the middle gripping. love the channel my 2.8 1998 e46 is running like a dream from this channel. cheers. Nice.
I am letting BMW do my oil change just because I want the stamp in my service book. it is all inspected as it should be so i wanna keep doing it even if it takes me 20 min to do an oil change myself. Asked BMW what oil they will put in my 323 year 00. 0w30 they said. It is really about the same stuff
hey 50s kid, i did an oilchange on my 325i. i filled in 6,5 liters fresh oil, but the stick tells me that my oil level is on minimum? do you know what could be the issue? maybe the stick pipe doesnt stick in properly?
Hi I’m watching your videos and I came across a question, I added green Prestone 50/50 coolant into my coolant tank, looked inside and realized it was blue... do I leave it? Is it okay?
thank you for your video ..quick question ... I noticed you used supertech oil which is not long life 01 oil ..what's your opinion on using non long life oils ...I thought about using non LL oils but people say it'll mess the vanos ???
Thanks again for great video. I dont know which way is correctly but usually i take that oilfilter cap to table, clean it, replace that big o-ring and then i put filter directly in that cap. Then i install cap+filter to its housing and tight it to 25nm. This is actually first time i see that someone install that filter element directly to oil filter housing. As i said, i dont know which is correct way, i think both will do just fine.. :)
Just a fast question been watching a ton of ur vids What oil should I use in my 2004 bmw 325xi This thing is new to me but I don’t know crap about e46 motor
great vid as usual. im experiencing some slight engine knock under normal driving conditions, and much more pronounced under load. Im thinking since the car was only driven 2000 miles a year for 16 years (2000 320i) that there may be some carbon build up. What do you think of those oil additives used for 10 minutes immediately before an oil change? second question: my car had been sitting for about 2 and a half weeks. I asked my wife to start it and let it run for 15 minutes. she starts it and shuts it off after 30 seconds. the next morning, it wouldnt start Im pretty damn sure the problem is cylinder wash down, so I'm gonna put a table spoon of oil in the cylinders tomorrow (did it before with my volvo 960 when i lived in the US). But one of my friends just told me that I could just hold the accelerator down to the floor when im starting the car, and the problem would be solved. I've never heard of that before. does that even make sense?
Hey 50sKid, do you think you can produce a video on how to change the Coils for an e46? I like your detail orientation within your video content, and thanks mega-much for the "Check list" download! And yes, I did subscribe to your channel, indeed!
since leaving that comment I have figured that out but thank you for replying because I did not know that there wasn't a trans dipstick but that prob explains why the oil one is red lol. Thanks again :)
Da Maestro As it's thread is covered in oil I would not recommend a torque wrench on the drain plug. Torque specs are for dry threads so it would be far to easy to strip even with a torque wrench. My method is (WITH A NEW CRUSH WASHER!) just tighten up the plug until you see the washer slightly compress. Then STOP. Check for leaks after filling and running the car before dropping it back down. Drain plugs don't need to be super tighter. Oil is thick and won't leak easy from a snug bolt.
Hi! I'm finding your videos super useful and interesting and I wish all the best with your future material. I would like to know what kind of oil would you recommend (a couple of choices) for a Sedan 325xi 2004 260k for summer and winter, I live in Toronto.
In all cases you need to run a synthetic oil. As far as the seasons go, it just depends on your coldest night/morning temp during that season. So if it never gets below freezing during summer, then a 5w30 is fine for that. For winter you could go 0w30 for some extra protection.
I thought it was a simple job, boy was I wrong! Bmw makes a simple job like that so complicating. A video would be much appreciated so people don't go through what I had to!
Just picked up a 2005 330i ZHP with 102k miles. Binging these videos in hopes of keeping the ride clean and maintained. So helpful for a newbie mechanic like myself.

Best E46 maintenance video's on youtube. Been watching a few just as entertainment. :P
Alright Guy, I have learned alot from your videos. You really go through the steps well.
Hes right
@Alexander Jose
Thanks alot man i thought changing oil on bmw’s was hard, but turns out it’s a piece of cake. I’ll save myself some good money. 👍🏼
Great video. One item/feedback. Use 36mm socket. Easy to use and if you are going to change oil often, it will pay for itself. excellent video for starters, can you do the video on what tools/ brand should we use for beginners? thank
I just bought 02 330ci this is the first bmw I've owned and I'm used to the oil filter being under the car your video really helped me out
In video you said u would give sizes to o rings that need to seal for oil filter to work properly. Thank u bro bro u r Apprieciated.
my man you helped me so much i was just watching to learn how to change my oil filter but now i finally know what size bolt for the cv axle
Excellent video!!! Just bought a 2005 325Ci and video is very helpful...

I just bought a e46 and wanted to know more about it and I did thanks for all your videos very helpful
Is a E36 (1998 BMW Z3) similar for doing the oil change 50sKid
Great video too, thanks for sharing this!
Yes very similar.
Yep, I saw another video on the Z3 inspection and I see it is the same. Thanks again 50sKid
I am amazingly gratefull with you for the information and the dedicación you put in this video, thanks!!!

Was wondering about the right size socket for the oil filter housing. You saved me $10. I have the adjustable wrench already. 🙏🏼

Great video . Just bought a 330i .
Your the best watching you from Africa

Wow! your engine is in great shape! gj, thanks for the vids
Kyle Lowrance Except for him using the cheapest synthetic engine oil you can buy, Walmart brand.
How hard do I need to press the button down? Nothing is happening when I do, even if the car is on...
hi 50skid..pls guide with choosing oil..i m totally confused..these are the options
1. 5w-30 synthetic but not ll-01(mobil,castrol)
2.5w-40(b3/b4..bmw ll-01)recommended by stores
3. castrol 0w-30 european formula(also ll-01)
4. castrol 0w-40 european formula
cannot find a 5w-30 ll-01.thank you..pls help.2002 bmw 325i 2.5 m54

I thought those o rings came in my oil filter kit but was super annoyed when I took them off hardened and snapping then realised I only had drain plug washers and a exterior o ring
Mine doesn’t have a dipstick how does yours have a dipstick?
Oil drain plug torque spec? "Gud 'n tight."
pretty much, it isn't pressurised so just making sure it's gud n tight.
thanks for the crescent wrench idea
6.5 liters is what you need to put in the car (01 330ci)
same as 2003 right ?
what oil do you use
@@mpc007 mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic for me on 2003 325i
wheel chocks... and use a stick to jam the brake pedal down if you want to be extra safe
I just bought an '02 330i, and the previous owner used 0w-40. I see int he comments you said 5w30. Why 5W30 and which brand?
you can use 0w40
Nick Dennis I believe engine oil that begins with a 0W is best for people who live in colder climates or during winter time.
Bro you’re the best
Love your video, Bought my dad's e46 vehicle, now I have to recheck fluids and do a oil change.
thank you this is a very thorough and informative video
Try the dws Continentals. Fair price and they ride nice. 40,000 mile tire. I live in MN. Year round tire.
What oil filter did u use?
Looks like Mann
wow this is very helpful. My 2004 321i only has 45 k miles and I know it's not worth selling. Thinking about purchasing a used bmw 325i wagon or 2005 m3.
I love this guy!
Did you find the part #s for the small gaskets?
Hi 50 Skid. Can you give the part number for the Mann Filter Oil?
Hey man thanks a lot for the videos. Nice explaining. The vacuum leak inspection video real useful though.
Would it not make sense to hoover the dust out of the air and cabin filters when inspecting them? I never do, but now thinking it might make sense. Would it?
looks like you need more air in your tyres. I would say 45psi to get the middle gripping. love the channel my 2.8 1998 e46 is running like a dream from this channel. cheers. Nice.
I have a 2003 bmw 325i does it take the same 5w-30 oil that your using????
yes
Siboney Santos please don't use that oil, it is walmart brand that is not BMW LL-01 approved.
Leonardo Flores uhhh I use royal purple
I am letting BMW do my oil change just because I want the stamp in my service book. it is all inspected as it should be so i wanna keep doing it even if it takes me 20 min to do an oil change myself. Asked BMW what oil they will put in my 323 year 00. 0w30 they said. It is really about the same stuff
Siboney Santos I use Kendall liquid titanium. Works really well. Quiets my calve lifters and overall engine.
Good looks man much needed
2017 bmw 330i 4cyl. My pil filter is not there your is where would be. Have not found one video showing me
the price of a 36mm socket is a lot less than the price of a new oil filter cap due to it being chipped away from that wrench.
So I have a 2003 BMW 330xi and when it's on neutral and I step on the gas pedal it feels like it rumples ...?? Do you know ..?
hey 50s kid, i did an oilchange on my 325i. i filled in 6,5 liters fresh oil, but the stick tells me that my oil level is on minimum? do you know what could be the issue? maybe the stick pipe doesnt stick in properly?
Omg!! Thank u so much!! Very helpful & u also made it seem easy & fast👏👏✌
Hi I’m watching your videos and I came across a question, I added green Prestone 50/50 coolant into my coolant tank, looked inside and realized it was blue... do I leave it? Is it okay?
Undefined Islander yeah it's fine you're not gonna hurt anything. Except the feelings of coolant color purists.
thank you for your video ..quick question ... I noticed you used supertech oil which is not long life 01 oil ..what's your opinion on using non long life oils ...I thought about using non LL oils but people say it'll mess the vanos ???
I Use Castrol Edge 5w40 synthetic oil and Mann oil filters not Supertech 5w30 motor oil
where can I get the cover that goes above the intake? what's the specific name for it? my car is missing it.
Those are just the engine covers. I think you mean the one that goes over the fuel rail. Search for part number 13531707404 on eBay.
Isn't that drain plug bolt too tight mate?
Just a fast question been watching a ton of ur vids What oil should I use in my 2004 bmw 325xi
This thing is new to me but I don’t know crap about e46 motor
5w-30.
I'd snag one of the oil change kits from OEMBimmerParts.com. That way you get all that you need in one order.
Supertech oil is LL01 approved?
Do u not recommended using an engine oil flush?
Hey so what measurement do I need to remove the oil housing socket ? It says 25NM on the top but In MM. what size does it need ?
Sorry, but I have never used a Crescent wrench on my vehicle.
Wat about transmission fluid

Hey 50sKid, do you think you can produce a video on how to change the Coils for an e46? I like your detail orientation within your video content, and thanks mega-much for the "Check list" download! And yes, I did subscribe to your channel, indeed!
Search my channel for my valve cover gasket video on the e46--you'll see how it to do it in there.
Cool! In fact, I found that particular video a little after I asked my initial question. VERY HELPFUL! Again, thanks much, indeed!
Excellent information, I appreciate a lot.
all I wanna know is the red handled one this dipstick for the oil? Usually they are black or yellow and red is for the transmission fluid..
the red is the oil dipstick, yes. No trans dipstick on these.
since leaving that comment I have figured that out but thank you for replying because I did not know that there wasn't a trans dipstick but that prob explains why the oil one is red lol. Thanks again :)
What is the torque spec for the oil drain plug?
Da Maestro As it's thread is covered in oil I would not recommend a torque wrench on the drain plug. Torque specs are for dry threads so it would be far to easy to strip even with a torque wrench. My method is (WITH A NEW CRUSH WASHER!) just tighten up the plug until you see the washer slightly compress. Then STOP. Check for leaks after filling and running the car before dropping it back down. Drain plugs don't need to be super tighter. Oil is thick and won't leak easy from a snug bolt.
okay thanks
Nitrogen in tires? Racing on the weekends or what ;)
Id love to see an oil pan gasket video when you get around to doing that job!
+CompCrasher86 not a fun job take it from me
+MiniMe exactly why I'd love to see 50skid tackle it first haha he's much calmer than myself when it comes to this stuff.
yeah so true! amazes me. i get way too frustrated way to easy working on my e46.
I thought it was a simple job, boy was I wrong! Bmw makes a simple job like that so complicating. A video would be much appreciated so people don't go through what I had to!
+carlos mejia it's coming up, as soon as the 100 degree weather breaks.
