    I appreciate you explaining the decision thought process as you work through the variables. Engineering camping solutions is such a creative joy, especially where the goal should be effective simplicity- easy assembly with less parts to carry. A cyclist can appreciate that. Your clear vinyl window covers look like they work almost perfect. I made something similar years ago with waterproof nylon rectangles held with small window suction cup outriggers made from thin garden bamboo stakes. They worked. Your idea probably works better in the wind. Through the years we have grown to avoiding solutions that need additional layers of solutions to make them function. I call it the backpacker mindset. Also, after a few trips you realize very fast that rain can make life in the campsite, miserable. For that I always carry a lightweight nylon fly tarp with simple poles and stakes to block us from the elements. On a rainy soggy morning at least we can make our tea and breakfast sitting under a small awning. Experience is evolution. I have ditched all the window covers, but kept the screens. We now setup the awning first thing, which literally takes minutes no matter where we are parked, and move the vehicle under the awning. No more issues. In the morning I pull the vehicle forward a few feet, open the tailgate under the awning, breakout the chairs and start our day. If the weather gets really nasty/windy I can drop the poles quickly and lay the awning directly on the vehicle while still staked to the ground. You have excellent content my friend. It’s very enjoyable, thank you. Please keep sharing your adventures.

      Thank you sharing your camping experience. We have been camping mostly in California, where it does not rain often in the summer. Now we often drive north to Oregon or Washington, when rain is more common. I like your tarp awning idea - even on a rainy day it would allow us to experience the outdoors while staying dry. We may give it a try. Cheers!

    Love the clever ideas/solutions you came up with for ventilation. I am going to try making the bug guards in a much smaller width that should work with my existing rain guards. You are right, they do add drag and noise, but I don't mind the little bit of extra drag if it helps to maintain my stealth and still allow ventilation. New subscriber, eager to see more of your adventure and ideas. Thanks for sharing!

    Beautiful Sienna! I used the plastic gutter leaf guards with a screen already in. And I can double them up so I have my windows down farther for more air flow. They work great. I may rip the screen off to put a better one on it. I used a piece of vinyl floor baseboard trim with magnets for rain guards. It has a little lip on it. Haven’t used yet in rain so will see how it works soon. Keep up the great videos and Thank You!!!😀

    I plan to use your side ventilation idea. I fooled with full size ones and it is a pain. This looks great. I have awnings and don't notice any real wind noise difference from before; but, I've had them on (my 2015) for over a year, so maybe just used to it. They will obviate the need for the towel if I use the plastic overhang idea. One step at a time. BTW, every time I try to leave the moon roof open, it rains; I don't like the mid-night scramble, so will hold off on that. Thanks much.

    I installed a bypass to supply 12v to the in-dash air circulation fan of my vehicle. So I get in air from the outside without opening a window: important when you park anywhere and not be bothered by law enforcement or by bear paws.

      Hi Tony, thank you for your comment. At this point we are not planning any alterations to the chassis of our Sienna, as we are not planning any significant off-roading. The AWD with electric rear motor, I believe, is not strong enough to handle real off- road challenges. Cheers!

      @@Tellvia We've used it on our 2021 Prius and it worked great. It was a little tricky to turn it on because it will shut off after an hour unless you turn it on *and* lock the car from the inside. (I think you have to do this from the driver door.) This involved a certain amount of contortion in our little Prius for which I assure you I am NOT well suited to perform, but we managed.
      With the car parked and in the ON state, the climate control worked very well. The engine would cycle on for about 30 seconds every 5 minutes, which kept the battery charged enough to operate the Climate Control. We slept comfprtably all night long.
      One downside, however, is that the noise of the engine *might* have been a little annoying to our camping neighbors... It is much noisier outside the car then in. This could be alleviated buy fully charging the battery beforehand. A full charge is possible without the use of a charging station by putting the engine into Charge Mode.

    • @Tellvia
      @Tellvia  2 роки тому

      @@MarkDHastingsMusic Thank you for sharing your HVAC camping experience, Mark. I agree with your assessment of the noise level outside of the car. At highway rest stops this is not an issue, but many campgrounds have quiet hour regulations that prohibit running engines. Have you cooled or heated the car? I am not sure if hybrid vehicles use engine heat to warm the cabin or an electric heater. Cheers!

    • @Tellvia
      @Tellvia  3 роки тому

      Hi Dawn, thank you for your comment. I used an 8 inch Heavy Duty Professional Spring Loaded Multipurpose Straight Edge Shears to cut the plastic I used for awnings. Here is a link to this product on Amazon amzn.to/2U24LyR. Regarding the wind test I don't have access to a wind tunnel but hope to experience a real windy rainstorm one day and will make a follow up video to let viewers know how the awnings held up. Cheers!

    Thanks for all of this! That magnetic tape you recommended is no longer available on Amazon and I can’t find it anywhere. Reviews of some others say they aren’t strong enough. Is there another brand you recommend? I do agree about the loud music but your videos are great!

    • @Tellvia
      @Tellvia  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching and your question. I recently came up with an updated design for the rain awnings - which are still held by magnets rather than a tape. The new design is more simple and the awnings are held more securely on the roof. My video about the new design, with the link to all parts, is coming in the next two weeks. I hope you can wait for the updated design video to continue your project. Cheers!

      @@Tellvia I’m planning an Easter trip. I have all the materials except for the magnetic tape. Can you give me a hint?

    • @Tellvia
      @Tellvia  Рік тому

      In short - in my new design I used 4 permanent magnets (here is a link to the part amzn.to/42MEEKY) per each awning. These magnets come with a bolt, washers and a nut to attach them to the top edge of the owning (two magnets at each ends and the other two spaced 12-13” apart). Use a drill bit to make holes for the bolts in the owning’s plastic. These magnets are very strong - so place the awnings edge with magnets onto to the roof edge carefully to avoid abrupt, strong impact when magnets are close to the roof surface, as such impact could potentially chip the paint on impact. I typically slide the magnets from non-magnetic sliding door frame to the roof section which is magnetic to avoid a potential magnet impact. In our experience - the new awnings stay attached even when sliding doors close or open and on windy days at the camp. Don’t forget to remove the awnings when driving, as a 60-70 ml/hr wind force would likely be strong enough to detach them when driving. Let me know how this project worked for you. Happy camping!

      Thank you for watching and your question. We had only one rainy day camping in Oregon last year. It was a light rain without much wind. The awnings worked great and we did not get any water in the cabin. How well the awnings will hold up in gusty rainstorm remains to be seen.
