Hey Ben... just want to thank you for posting these videos. I was able to do the drywall in my studio by myself by watching your videos. I had never done it before and it turned out great!!
What Ben is saying in the video is very true. The premix compounds are very notorious for being on the dry side. I now just buy the dry bag now and mix up the correct proportions now.
That’s why you add water to your mud BEFORE you start mudding & taping. I think newbies use the mud right out of the pail or box. Definitely not enough moisture to start with !!
To much water can be as bad as not enough water. The trick to no blisters is a nice even coat of mud that is a good workable consistency. I can't use mud if it is to thin. I don't leave enough behind to bond the tape to the wall.
Man you rock, Omg I’m trying to get ready to do my house. Ha I’ve been getting ready for a couple months. I hope I could hire you when I screw everything up👍😂
I did so much research b4 getting supplied up- had beads, paper tape, 2 diff kinds of mesh tape, some just-in-case patch kits, etc. I didn't learn about Fibafuse until much later 😭 finding mesh strings and pieces stuck everywhere after my struggling lol
Thanks bud i'm pulling out what's left of my hair with my current skill level. All my tape has fallen off the wall and I'm about to put this drywall knife through the door
Adhesion of the paper tape is vastly improved if wetted first. Works well on hot summer days when using hot mud. The tape is meant to be embedded in the “adhesive” rather than it being applied to it already. It needs to be evenly pressed and have the even moisture transfer mentioned in the video. You’re not trying to finish the joint in the first swipe, just embed the tape, so putting mud over the tape often gets more bubbles, as does messing with it too much. Too thick a bed of mud and you’ll have more problems smoothing it out, smooshing more mud out of some areas and piling it up in adjacent areas. Then, when you pass your knife and mud over that bit of tape it just kind of sticks to the mud and the knife, pulling it off the bedding layer of mud beneath. There’s a bubble/blister and another 45 minutes to finish in subsequent coats. If you swipe it more than twice you gotta leave it alone, in most cases. Just my 2c to add. Happy drywall finishing.
That’s how I learned from my pop who moonlighted for several years. He and a buddy did countless houses back in the day and always cut tape to length then put it into a bucket for a few minutes. I’ve done it both ways now.
if you put wet mud on top of the tape it does actually help, the paper isn't waterproof and the drywall under the tape will absorb that moisture you just put down. I pre-wet my tape though.
I used to pre-wet tape. Now, many years later, I have a slew of tape failures I get to repair. The water absorbed into the tape from pre-wetting prevented the tape from absorbing the mud adhesive properly.
MUD!!! LOL ok fair enough. I thought its called filler! Lol i prefer the scrim tape for the joints! And paper tape ur using for corners internals only. I like using my float for smoothing and working with gives me a slightly wider coverage too.and more control. Everyone has there own preference i quess? I have noticed end of the day it all works in the end. Great video mate! I live in Scotland uk mate. Ive never heard it called MUD! we call it filler buddy i wondered what u meant when u said mud!! Lol i thougbt u were actually gonna do something with mud 😂😂
should i be going for yogurt consistency for hot mud? my hot mud consistency is like soft serve ice cream. if i add more powder it gets too peanut butter do i go for something more watery or more dry like peanut butter? if watery is better, does the soft serve consistency = too gritty and undermixed?
Can this technique be used on split ceiling paper? I just bought a new apartment and the ceiling is papered and painted. There is a split and bubble along one of the seams. Also looks like it wasn’t lined up well. Looking for a cost effective way to make it less noticeable in the short term until I can afford to have the ceiling redone. Can anyone offer advice? Thank you to anyone that can help out 🙇🏻♂️
Why don’t you tape the angles first and why are you stuck in the 1900s doing the flats with paper tape (I’m a young drywaller and I’m generally curious)
I dare you to watch it. That method is a hack that weakens the bond. I’ve tested it twice. This DIY Drywall Hack Needs to Die!!!! ua-cam.com/video/aOXeQMJbIUU/v-deo.html
Factory edge to factory edge are the easiest and i always use mesh not paper ... feathering is the art ... mud so you dont have to sand hardly at all and keep boogers out of mud
For me.. I do because it acts like a filler for the first coat and the first coat will have less shrinkage… plus it looks better for the customers eyes… there’s no wrong or right cause they all turn out the same anyways..😂😂❤!!
Humidity in the room is more likely to make it take too long to dry which cause other problems down the road. Ideally the less humid the better. You want that tape on the wall wiped out and drying out so that you don’t get delayed shrinkage which is the main problem from excess humidity
Who are these people who are always asking you this question what kind of crowds do you hang out with seep through and go around the edges as you press it down quit trying to reinvent the wheel and act like you are the best mud puller in the world there's a thousand of you out there and there will always be a thousand more get over it
Best tip I ever got from you is that taping mud should be yoghurt consistency. The mud soaks into the tape giving a perfect bond.
Yup. It’s got to be wet. And taping mud is the best by far for taping
Many layers is okay, but yogurt consistentsy doesn't work on the ceiling or long corners.
It doesn't have to be that wet. You just have to KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING
Hey Ben... just want to thank you for posting these videos. I was able to do the drywall in my studio by myself by watching your videos. I had never done it before and it turned out great!!
Great tip. Another influencer has said several times to put mud on top of your tape to wet it and it will never bubble. Your comment makes more sense.
And this is why I hear about it sooooooo much. Drywall misinformation
What Ben is saying in the video is very true. The premix compounds are very notorious for being on the dry side. I now just buy the dry bag now and mix up the correct proportions now.
Nice to see you on another vid mate👌
Great advice on this issue
That’s why you add water to your mud BEFORE you start mudding & taping. I think newbies use the mud right out of the pail or box. Definitely not enough moisture to start with !!
Great tip, it took me way too long to learn that over the years
Spot on my friend, nice video's too Ben.
Ben why do bad things happen to good people ?
I was just wondering about this lately - thanks for more tips to remind me again :)
An incredible channel based on fixing holes on a wall. Well done.
Great advice man!

Also depends how you are taping. But I agree. Hand taping has a pretty specific consistency. Banjo is much wetter.
Banjo is definitely not better in my opinion it may be faster but I feel that the mud needs to have way loser of a consistency for it work properly.
@@sgtgandolf8797 he said much wetter, not much better 😂
Dip your tape roll in water first
You the man. I struggled with this
What great guy! You even tape the time responding to comments and questions.
Super helpful tip for beginners.
Word to ya MUDDA!
Love the honesty just taped and rocked my bathroom and dining room first time and guess what 🧐 blisters man 😊blisters thank you 🙏
I prefilled last weekend for my first time. It went really well! I’ll be taping my first time this weekend. I’m so grateful for your videos. Thanks!
i always put it over one step faster from being done, never had a blister
Thanks for the info big Boss
Love your videos.
I have learned so much from you man!!
Man you rock, Omg I’m trying to get ready to do my house. Ha I’ve been getting ready for a couple months. I hope I could hire you when I screw everything up👍😂
Since I'm a crappy DIYer, I buy fibafuse to protect myself from... Myself 😅
Fibafuse is a good product 👍
I did so much research b4 getting supplied up- had beads, paper tape, 2 diff kinds of mesh tape, some just-in-case patch kits, etc.
I didn't learn about Fibafuse until much later 😭 finding mesh strings and pieces stuck everywhere after my struggling lol
What is fibafuse?
@@christianbennett2900it’s expensive.
I love you man. No wierd way. Your videos are awesome, the info.is great and really, you just make me happy. TY man, keep being awesome.
You put mud over your tape for slip. Also your next coat grips better instead of skidding-which makes it easier to get a better finish.
Thanks bud i'm pulling out what's left of my hair with my current skill level. All my tape has fallen off the wall and I'm about to put this drywall knife through the door
You a mud king!
Thanks for your tips

Thank you!! Wish I would have known this years ago
You get blisters because you don’t have enough mud under the tape
Usually yes.
Thanks Ben. That helps
I think his question was a yes or no on the mud over the tape
if you put wet mud on top of the tape it does actually help, the paper isn't waterproof and the drywall under the tape will absorb that moisture you just put down. I pre-wet my tape though.

Yep. I learned that wet tape doesn’t work. 👍😀
I have a video on that topic. It’s worth watching. It severely reduces the bond.
@@vancouvercarpenterinteresting
I can't wait to try this on my next job I always have at least a few blisters in my tape
I tell this to gc’s alllllll the time when they try rushing me to get a job done
Words of wisdom!
You are absolutely right
Great subject.
Love it .
I like to go over it as it is easier to do two coats after that to finish up.
Ty Sir !
But you don’t want to much water to where the mud looks like soup
This guy is great - the videos helped me through my first big home reno. Thanks man!
Thank you!!
1,000,000 dollar question. What do you use to moisturize your hands
So good
If Sheetrock is is deeply sanded to the gypsum Wich is porous past the paper, can mud be added and sanded 2ft x 2ft
You need to seal it first with something llike guardz then you a fill with harder mud and finish top layer an easy to sand mud for topcoat
Blisters also happen when you scrape too hard and leave little spackle under the tape.
Yup. Gotta learn how to let it glide.
MUD!!! LOL ok fair enough.

Just buy General/Green bucket. I stopped having issues once I made the switch.
I do it never have a problem 25 plus years.
We dnt need moisture in our bearings either.
Don’t worry about it the painters will fix everything anyway. No matter how good your drywalling is.
I only did myd a few times. But i invented wetting the tape with water first.
I’m an electrician. Redoing my back room and I genuinely get sooooo frustrated mudding and taping I’ll leave it to yall pros
if the taping mud doesn’t fall off your knife it’s too thick lol
People always ask me: Ben is it better to put indies or thunders on chocolate deck...
Also dipping your tape in a bucket of water will prevent bubbles
Dip your tape in a bucket of water and pull it between your fingers to get excess water off of it. It helps tremendously.
I went to mesh because you never have a blister problem.
I approve this message👍
Ben how much is enough water as I am one of those that strictly go from the pale.
What about the premixed mud from HD? Should I be adding water to it?
Why is there a belly band On the GWB? Another rookie hanger. They make 54” drywall..lol
should i be going for yogurt consistency for hot mud?
my hot mud consistency is like soft serve ice cream. if i add more powder it gets too peanut butter
do i go for something more watery or more dry like peanut butter? if watery is better, does the soft serve consistency = too gritty and undermixed?
Is mud a new way of saying plaster?
Have you got a "how to" from start to finish for beginners???
He's got a ton of beginner videos and they're really helpful.
Sooooooo many
Makes sense
How do you know what side of the tape goes towards the wall?
“Over top” is a Midwesternism and/or Canadian.
Can this technique be used on split ceiling paper? I just bought a new apartment and the ceiling is papered and painted. There is a split and bubble along one of the seams. Also looks like it wasn’t lined up well.

Can you do a corners video please?
I have sooooo many videos on corners.
Well that explains my problem
Ta bien perro primo 👏
seen a dude dip the tape in mud first and put on dude was fast
Its what a drywall banjo does. 👍
Do you pre-wet your tape in a bucket of water?
What’s supporting the backside of the horizontal joint at the wall? What’s going to prevent that joint from cracking in future?
The tape bonds the two pieces together and prevents cracking if properly applied
The studs
Why not just use mesh tape. That stuff won’t bubble
how much water do you add to a bucket of mud?
Why don’t you tape the angles first and why are you stuck in the 1900s doing the flats with paper tape (I’m a young drywaller and I’m generally curious)
To fix a joint that was not done properly, can I mud over paint? They put the tape down and mud but they left a bump.
I’d cut it out. Remud & tape. Then recoat, sand, prime & paint. It’s more work but the finished look will be a hell of a lot better !!
So, more water then?
No blisters, huh? Not even on that last tape joint in the video? Because i can already see THEM
Nope. None.
I always get my tape wet before I use it. No way I would put dry paper on the wall.
I dare you to watch it. That method is a hack that weakens the bond. I’ve tested it twice.

But aren't you mudding over the tape in this video?
Why are there 2 horizontal joints use the right size gib hahaha. Good advice tho
Im just going to use perfect 90 and fiber glass. Paper tape is aweful.
The humidity in the room could affect things
Humidity in the room is more likely to make it take too long to dry which cause other problems down the road. Ideally the less humid the better. You want that tape on the wall wiped out and drying out so that you don’t get delayed shrinkage which is the main problem from excess humidity
And don't use light weight mud for taping.
What is Mud?
Sometimes i get tape wet
