2 Things: 1) I'm sitting here watching this video, when one of my kids walked in and asked, "What the hell are you watching?" Then they stood there and watched it all with me, haha. 2) I didn't think that the glue additive would do much, because of how thinned it is, with the water and mud. You should test this same thing as you did here, but with a painted surface rather than just a piece of sheetrock. I, and many others, love your videos, man. Keep it up! We thank you

It is interesting that all of them peeled more evenly from the left. I wonder if there was something about the direction in which you wiped the tape out that made that possible? Having used Durabond to tape with FibaFuse before, I was gratified to see how well it performed. I have a soft spot in my heart for Durabond. Excellent video. Thanks for creating it. Makes me feel confident using Durabond, EasySand, or General Purpose when taping.
I literally just did all my first time taping a house with quickset and paper tape, abd it all solid as and no issues. Has been up for around 3 months. Still all fine.
Off topic, but have you seen or can you do a review of the "Quiet Rock" drywall? I've known about the noise reduction trick of double 5/8ths wall board with "green adhesive" between or offset walls (2x6 plates with offset 2x4 studs to uncouple shared walls). In concept, a pre-made multi-layer wall board seems interesting. Does it work? I saw int he specs the "545" top end had a steel sheet in it ... that would be hard cutting.
How big of a deal is it to have frayed drywall joints? I’m drywalling my garage ceiling with 5/8” and in order to make it fit in some small spots, I took a utility knife and cut the beveled edge to make it fit against an already hung piece. It left a bit of a messy, uneven edge. Will taping and mudding pretty much hide this or should I take these pieces down and recut?
I get what you're doing here but you did a similar test but in that test you put mud on top of the tapes as well and that is really weird the tape gets its strength so basically all of the mud you used in this video pretty much has plenty of strength once you put mud on top of them all for the second coat. All tape and mud are going to crack depending on how much movement is involved. There are definitely some better tape out there and some better mud out there but typically it's going to crack the first time around Then after you repair the crack with the better stuff then hopefully the crack will not return but if there's enough movement again it's going to crack

I had it shrink up too much and crack long the paper Edge. Was it a bad batch probably, but I still will never go through that again. So now I've just been using straight up all purpose for doing my joints.

I'd love to see how the tape adheres using JUST the glue. Always seemed to me like you could get the absolute flatest butt joint if we could just use straight glue instead of mostly mud with just a little bit of glue in it.
I’ve wondered that myself. You would need to have everything pre-filled first. Might be worth trying on some scrap for fun. I think if it was viable it would already be the norm.

@@vancouvercarpenter Thanks, wasn't sure if screwing to steel studs was a good way of doing that considering how thin those are. Even with fine threaded screws, you get maybe 1 or 2 threads grabbing the stud?
@@seanrobinsonjr4363 It still works pretty well. As long as your not trying to hang hundreds of pounds off of a few screws you should be fine. If they grab properly you are probably getting 30 to 40 pounds per screw minimum.
I have used paper routinely with 90 and 45 min hot mud with zero issues. Can you try with 20 and 5 min? I done even use that stuff as it sets way faster than I need it to. Possibly, it’s too fast to penetrate into the paper for proper adhesion?

Same! I bought easy sand 90 for prefilling, all purpose for taping and plus 3 for finishing. Hoping it turns out. I would have otherwise bought the plus 3 for everything ad it's what stores push to the front page.

I think people have it backwards. You can use paper tape with hot mud or mesh tape. You’re not supposed to bed mesh tape with bucket mud. I taped a bunch of drywall in my house with mesh tape and bucket mud and a couple years later I had several cracks. I looked up the specs on the mesh tape and it says it should only be bedded with hot mud
I have never seen tape fail to adhere with any kind of mud except for an occasional blister. I think it is from a dry spot either from a poor bedding coat or I am using the mud too stiff. I hate the plop, plop, plop of the mud dripping off my knife onto the floor, my clothes and my head so I use the mud on the stiff side. I have switched to Fiba-Fuse everywhere but corners and haven't seen a blister in a long time. That makes me happy.
I use fiba-fuse + hot mud for all repair joints. It isn't as strong as paper tape, but it is so much easier to work with, and is actually strong enough. I have some I did several years ago, and it is still holding up well. I mix the hot mud fairly thin, and make sure to really work it into the fiba-fuse and not wipe it all out. Sticks very well. Had to pull some off one time and it was not easy to remove.

But been using British Gypsum (part of Saint-Gobain) Easifill, which I think is equivelent to your all purpose but not sure. before i found your channel my local lumberyard told me to use lite line 3 to tape because i was new and thats what they recommended to new tapers. I had horrible results. So i appreciate everything I've learned from your channel. now i use the right mud for the job.
They add perlite to the mud to make it lightweight and to let it dry faster. Perlite is volcanic glass that has a lot of bound water in it. When heated the water is dislodged, turns to superheated steam and expands the glass in the same way steam expands popcorn. It’s very porous and lightweight.
Know a couple people that use the regular lightweight for all processes and I tell them it is not as good, but they just say it hasn't caused any problems yet
i have no idea what i just watched😅 my native language is german but i am fluent in english however there were many words i have never heard before in this context. Mud is earth with water for me not that stuff you stick on those walls. nontheless good stuff! but i will stick to the skating channel^^ geeking out over wheelbases and thunder hollows is more my thing^^
This is great timing for me as well. I finally hung some drywall in my reno, and I have some problem areas where I will be using durabond and I wanted to know about combining that with paper tape
There’s a reason why hot mud doesn’t come premixed in pail. Because once you add water to the powdered product, the timer begins. Leftover is garbage. So it’s very different from green top in that way. But just wipe your tools and hawk/ pan as you go and wash your tools clean when you’re done using them like you would with green top. It doesn’t flash over into something like tile -grout- mortar. Old-fashioned heavy hot mud may be closer, but not ridiculous. Just stay clean and organized.
Hot mud turns into a rock at roughly the specified number of minutes on the bag. If you can't use it in that time, you trash it. If you don't push your time, it cleans off your tools just like ready mix. If you wait too long, you can scrape off one knife with another. I use a hawk rather than a mud pan so I can scrape it with a knife too. Actually mine has a permanent smooth layer of compound on it. I imagine a mud pan is a real mess if you don't clean it up in time. I bet many a mud pan has been tossed when it wasn't cleaned in a timely manner.
I'm a novice and I accidentally did a 2 foot patch using paper tape and drydex heavyweight spackle, not watered down or anything. Tape didn't bubble or lift, can't tell there was ever a hole in the wall. I kinda think drywall is simpler than some people make it out to be. Apply goop to wall, make flat.
The hardest part I've found is doing a bigger job and looking for all the imperfections when sanding😂 and having to fix them when needed. Its kind of a f my life time in the process.
Drywall in general is not difficult to learn and do well. But being able to do a lot of it quickly is VERY difficult. What a pro can do in one hour takes me nearly all day. Mine will look approximately as good as his when I'm done, but it will take me A LOT more time.
All we can get in my area is cgc all purpose in buckets and boxes of all purpose lite. Basically everyone i know uses all purpose lite for all steps. I dont mind taping with all purpose but it sucks for finishing and is terrible for sanding . Certianteed mud is available also but personally dont like it
I often use paper tape with hot mud, but I glue it to the drywall directly first. Typically I’ll do that If I have a smaller patch job and I don’t want to open a whole thing of standard mud and I’m trying to keep the build out small. Keeps the paper as close to the drywall as possible. Once some paper tape and titebond III dries, it’s crazy strong..
Can't use paper tape with curing mud? You better tell around 3 or 4 generations of plasterers in eastern US that they've been doing it wrong all this time.
14:28 probably beacuse going from right to left before it tears your are basically pulling it on itself into a U shape, but when you're pulling left to right you're more off pulling it away from piece in more of an L shape or a more obtuse L shape
Although I have also used quick set muds with paper tape for years. I have noticed the 20 min westpac brand hot mud doesn't adhere to paper tape as well as a taping or all purpose mud. I wish Westpac made it to the testing board.
I used your videos to help me drywall my sunroom. Needed to replace the whole ceiling. The seams are lumpy but not blistering and its been 4 years. Next time I have to do a whole room I'll rent a drywall sander with dust collection. I need to remember I'm 38, not 28 😂
Hot mud like 5 minutes or (adding excelsior I don’t know if it still is made) I sometimes soaked a tape role in water to help it stick to the mud but the tape will stretch a lot and it doesn’t help much

When he pulled from the right, it was a direct pull back. On left, he tended to pull more at and angle.
Maybe it’s not a matter of adhesion, but suction. I imagine quick set would provide more diction and perhaps would help hold the paper tape

Just use fine thread screws if you can and make sure to hit the stud but don’t over tighten. Add some glue if you can

Yeah, dunno why hot mud would adhere to panel paper but not the tape. Maybe the myth is based on the idea that you can't use mesh tape with ready-mix.
Hot mud with tape makes sense with repairs since the mud will fill in larger gaps and harden fairly fast.

I often use paper tape with hot mud, but I glue it to the drywall directly first. Typically I’ll do that If I have a smaller patch job and I don’t want to open a whole thing of standard mud and I’m trying to keep the build out small. Keeps the paper as close to the drywall as possible. Once some paper tape and titebond III dries, it’s crazy strong..
of course you can use quickset and paper tape ...... quick set was around long before fiberglass
Can't use paper tape with curing mud? You better tell around 3 or 4 generations of plasterers in eastern US that they've been doing it wrong all this time.
14:28 probably beacuse going from right to left before it tears your are basically pulling it on itself into a U shape, but when you're pulling left to right you're more off pulling it away from piece in more of an L shape or a more obtuse L shape

You can use mesh with hot mud!?
The manufactures of mesh tape specify hot mud although I have gotten away with using ready mix with mesh tape.
Although I have also used quick set muds with paper tape for years. I have noticed the 20 min westpac brand hot mud doesn't adhere to paper tape as well as a taping or all purpose mud. I wish Westpac made it to the testing board.
I used your videos to help me drywall my sunroom. Needed to replace the whole ceiling. The seams are lumpy but not blistering and its been 4 years. Next time I have to do a whole room I'll rent a drywall sander with dust collection. I need to remember I'm 38, not 28 😂
i use hot mud(durabond) for setting paper tape many times without any issues. mesh tape is too bougie for me. 😁🤣😅

Hot mud like 5 minutes or (adding excelsior I don’t know if it still is made) I sometimes soaked a tape role in water to help it stick to the mud but the tape will stretch a lot and it doesn’t help much

In Australia we use hot mud all the time infact a lot of people think multi purpose is not strong enough for tapping
