A lot of respect to the pilots who make their living flying the MD11. That thing has to come in so damn hard and fast because of its design and they make it look like butter.
Not true. There is absolutely no requirement at all to put it down hard. In fact, a 1.1G landing was always preferred. That's what you call a greaser, and everybody wanted to do it.
For some odd reason! The MD-11 is just one of my favourite planes. It’s loud, iconic and does its job as a freighter and passenger plane! Also HD how come you are doing morning uploads! Great footage!
Its one of my favourites too! Love the tri-jets and maybe because the MD-11s are one of the only classic tri-jets still flying that we love them! Giving morning uploads a try, seeing whether it sparks for interest!

I personally flew every single one of the FedEx planes in this video many, many times and so it was super nice to see them all again. The MD-11, by the way, is a very nice flying plane and isn't dangerous at all if you handle it correctly. Keep up the great video work!
@@HDMelbourneAviation I love the MD-11 landing! May I feature this one in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. All the best to you!
It's a damn pity this jet isn't still in commercial service. I still feel it has A LOT of potential if it were just updated with bigger engines. And a more modern cockpit and interior. Still very viable commercial jet in my opinion.
Planes today: Look ... the winglet is bigger. Look ... it has a "racoon mask" .... come on .... No one screams caracter like a trijet and from this group, the most radical is the DC10 / MD-11
And with a very poor safety record that tallies with this. I was on one coming into Amsterdam on a severely windy day, it was hair-raising, and I didn’t know a thing about its reputation at the time. Which was fortunate.
I remeber long ago in Anchorage Ak a Boeing 707 Northwest touched and bounced. The crew asked tower what there touch down time was and the tower asked them which time. Did not go well..
Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that the MD-11 has a higher landing speed than most and is a little tricky to land, there has been at least 1 fatal crash on landing. It is also one ugly plane the Tristar was the best looking trijet, excellent video as always thanks for sharing.
There are a couple of accidents of MD-11 due to landing, L-1011 Tristar was the most advanced aircraft at it's time, it could perform take-offs and landings without pilot touching the controls, Even at low visibilities. Other planes just had to divert to other airports. But that plane was a financial failure. MD-11, was a larger modified DC-10, It was difficult to land, It was an over-weight underperformer and did not reach it's range and fuel targets.
@@lavanyachella6515 yes you are correct I did fly to the Paris airshow on a TriStar and the crew performed a full automated landing. The engine's that powered the TriStar almost caused the demise of RR, the British government had to bail them out.
Nothing more than a standard PIO situation. Although these bounces were no doubt embarrassing, they were not particularly hard and did no damage to the plane.
And with a very poor safety record that tallies with this. I was on one coming into Amsterdam on a severely windy day, it was hair-raising, and I didn’t know a thing about it’s reputation at the time. Which was fortunate.
Skylease let his airplane get too slow there before the first flare, I saw the outcome already. Second, he should have advanced throttles for bounce recovery, this would kick the spoilers back down.
This landing was not pretty, but was not a disaster by any measure. Then, only a go-around would have stopped the bouncing because the pilot put himself into a very standard PIO situation, which is also embarrassing.

Who is the they? I’m guessing you are talking about the FAA. If I recall correctly the rest of the world continued to fly them. Not the first or last time the FAA exercised poor judgement.
Also It needs to land at higher speeds due to control surfaces being reduced to save fuel. A great machine indeed, how many jets have been junked and this keep going.
@@PeterNGloor I know because I flew the DC-10, MD-10, and the MD-11 full time for 17 years, including every single one of the FedEx planes you see in this video.
