@@heklik Its because it is being replaced with more efficient planes, like 777 etc. MD-11 is aging at this point and cant compete with the newer planes that can carry more, while using less fuel, but it is still one of the most beautiful aircrafts ever made imo...
Flying the MD-11 has become a bit of a specialty. All are now in cargo service, and with the known anomalies, especially during landing, it must be a carefully honed skill which pilots take some pride in.
Just don't run out of elevator and keep speed up until ground effect. But then I only have 20 hours in the Alteon MD-11. But even the heavy DC-10-30's one needed to relax back pressure just as the flare finished and fly it right down to the numbers at Vref. Neither airplane liked crosswinds much in terms of ground effect.
Camera person has done a fabulous job with this video! If you have any interest in flying and want to see close-ups of the various instrument displays - enough to get into the pilot's mind and understand with situational awareness, then watch this. Brilliant stuff!!
Most of them have been retired by FedEx as of late 2024. UPS still has a few left but they're getting rather long in the tooth. I'm sure they'll still use them in other countries for a while yet, but to be fair they still use DC-3's to haul cargo in some countries
That was a very clean landing. Seems like a great airplane. I’m also highly amused by the choice of voice annunciator by McDonnell Douglas. Boeing went with the chipper midlantic news caster, AirBus chose an indifferent Brit (that keeps calling me a retard)… MD picked the computer voice from Star Trek TOS.
As a pilot for 45 years, and having spent many years flying the MD-11, this landing was about a 7/10. I say this mostly because of the plane's pitch and orientation when he approached minimums - also the timing of the reverse thrust application was off. Still passing and an ok landing, but not perfect.
Flew on a virtually empty DC-10 from SJU to LGA a thousand years ago. Believe it was Eastern Airlines. Stretched out at the very back of the plane across all five center seats… slept the entire way… best flight I’ve ever had incl Falcon trijet private and old United business class across the Pacific.
I have only flown on a DC-10 -40 with Northwest Airlines and it was a right down comfortable flight. The Series 40 has up rated engines for high and hot altitudes and did not even come out until after the early air disasters took place with American & Turkish Airlines. Both of those disasters could have been avoided if the maintenance department at American followed the proper or approved procedure in removing engines. The Turkish accident was from a less than ideal designed cargo hatch door system in which it was far from anything which could be considered fail safe. After the New Zealand accident in Antarctica, which was also human error, the DC-10 model, in general, was doomed. The MD-11 could not escape its earlier cousin's reputation and did not sell well. The Swiss Air fire took care of any hope the airliner being a sales success. I believe the MD-11 was better designed than the DC-10 and had a lot to offer. People were afraid of it so it found its niche in cargo. Now with more economical engines and more power, newer models of freighters will send the MD-11 to the graveyard before its time. I guess it does make a good freighter and can carry some heavy loads.
Problem was because of the way the mount failed when the engine detached it went up and over the wing, ripping out the hydraulics in the leading edge causing the slats on that side to retract. That's what caused the roll. If it had just dropped away it could have been handled.
Sure everybody puts the blame on bad maintenance but admit it - the DC-10 was badly designed and suffered from a lack of redundancy and susceptibility to a single point of failure that was nothing less than criminally negligent. No check valves to prevent fluid loss when all three hydraulic systems were severed. No pressure relief vents to prevent floor collapse when the inherently unsafe cargo door blows off mid-flight
Yeah, it is just that Boeing killed off production because it was competing against the 777. Also, it was not popular because it did not reach fuel burn/performance targets, and ETOPS killed the tri/quadjet because the 777 and A330 could fly across the pacific with 2 engines, so why need 3 or 4?
Folks this plane is inching closer to 40 every year hahaha. The 90's were a while ago. The plane design is closer to half a century old or more since an MD-11 is essentially a DC-10 stretched out and without the gauges in the cockpit
I wish I could've been a pilot, but I have a stutter and I wouldn't be able to communicate fast enough. Unless the other pilot would do the talking on every flight.
Oh man I wish I could have been a pilot too. I’m Dyslexic and have communication issues so I probably would not have made a good pilot but I seriously love anything aviation!!! I’m fricken amazed that we’ve come from the Wright brothers to today’s jumbo jets!! It’s amazing!!
I have one, I don’t let it stop me. Fun fact: you don’t really have to talk super fast, just not really slow. There are many ways to practice, and get it down, always believe man.
My father was the MD engineer in Frankfurt working with Martinair in the early 90's. I went to visit him and he took me for a tour of the shop and I watched the maintenance techs bleeding the brakes on one of the planes. Just like a car.
Nice. Notice that Identifying runways is surprisingly difficult from the air. My Private Pilot instructor and I once got lost about 2000 feet above and 2 miles east of our home field 6000 foot E-W runway. Embarrassing? Yes. Typical? Yes!
idk, I personally prefer it so say, the voice on the Airbus. That one is a bit full on. The robot lady in the MD-11 is less.. human, which to me makes focusing on the operation of the aircraft a bit more easier. Each to their own I guess!
I fly mostly DC-10 tankers or MD 11s on Infinite Flight simulator. Such a great plane to fly, responsive, massive amount of power, looks very cool with the 5 to 6 degree approach and 7-8 at flare. Fun to fly.
Just look at the view from the side window and compare the same view on the 747 video on this channel to get an impression of the difference in cockpit and window size.
I would say that's more to do with the Mike on the Camera more than anything. If a modern Cockpit werer really that noisy, those two would have had to shout at each other rather than talk normally as they are clearly doing.
It is that noisy. That's why they have headsets and are using the intercom. And that is also one reason, why the MD-11 has been demoted to freight flights. I personally think, that the MD-11 was a good aircraft, that lacked some refinement. But you could say that to quite a lot of US products back in the 80's, early 90s ;)
the md-11 is such a beauty.
Ohh yes, she's the queen of beauty in the skies for me
Then why it's out of production ?

The MD-11 is actually a reasonably economical and very useful freighter for mst companies, so they're gonna retire them much much later.
