Four years later now, I've seen them on their first Europe headlining tour last week and am currently trying to cure the post concert depression by watching interviews and live footage and came across this one. It is so incredible to see how much the band has grown and developed into one of the best bands in their genre!

It’s honestly not though. When you cough you tense up your core, your throat does something. Replicate that situation and replace that “cough” with words. For the higher notes, imitate a burp kind of but speak and restrict the air using your throat. That doesn’t mean it’s used to fully creat the sound, just enough to get that distortion(don’t listen to people who say not to do this, you can’t add distortion to your voice without it, have been singing since 2003 and doin this crap since 2007)
Check out Toni Linke video series on vocal distortion, the guy explain everything from an anatomical point of view and it really helps understanding how to work on it.

You are doing it wrong, it should be comfortable. Don't tense up, learn to feel how to make your false vocal cords phonate with as little energy as possible. The best exercise is actually to try to growl at whisper / conversation volume.
