You know what’s funny? I am mainly a soul vocalist, but messing around with these kind of vocals just for fun has increased my range and control like crazy. It’s like I opened another part of my voice... I told someone that it was almost like doing “vocal yoga”.

It's actually not too hard to do a growl or scream. The hard part is finding a way to make these noises in a healthier way, and with less risk of vocal fatigue or injury.
A fry scream built from Khöömei will always be safer and healthier than a fry scream built from falsetto, and an exhale-based scream will always be safer than an inhale-based scream (can't say healthier because there isn't enough research in that area of ingressive phonation)
Please note that no form of vocals/singing are 100% safe, because our bodies just aren't built to produce these noises.

When you said for your lows you don't tighten your throat as much, that helped me a ton. I was clenching tight and sometimes it got a little too out of control and didn't sound good. So thanks!

Also Id suggest to try doing different tongue placement for different sounds. One I really like and use the most is to use the middle/back of my tongue and put it to the roof of my mouth kinda far back in my my mouth. Its not an amazing sounding guttural, but it does make a different sound, and it makes it so much easier to pronounce words. All other guttural techniques make it really hard for me to pronounce words, except maybe tunnel throat, but Im not sure if I do that right.

Hmm I tried doing gutturals during this tutorial and managed to learn a different growl. I have no idea which one it is and I thought it sounded cool and so did others. So after a month I think or more of doing that I forgot all about gutturals and learned another growl which also sounded cool. Im pretty proud of myself lol and I have practicing screaming and growling fir 9-11 months. Makes me realize that all the time and dedication was worth it. Now here I am back to this tutorial and now I think I might be able to do it. Ill wait till tomorrow since my parents are asleep. Also thanks for the tips Austin. (: I hope you reply to this and if you dont its fine. You Jared and other youtubers relly helped me learn how to scream and growl. I can now hold my growls longer than before and I dont get light headed either. I learned how to breath from my diaphragm as well. Id say that you and Jared helped me the most with these tutorials. I thank the both of you so much. :)

I love all genres of rock music but not as much as death, thrash, and heavy metal, I have a really deep voice and such, I sometimes try to sneak and do practice (I'm Only 14 and my entire family is Christian and knows I'm not and how I listen to metal and I get Embarrassed or go through some stupid lecture) because I live in a very religious home against this kind of music but I don't really care, I wish I could do more practice, I feel as if I have so much potential and knowing I'm being so held back just drives me nuts, I can't wait until I have my own pad to practice one day, I also can't wait to start a band of my own! Ok I been practicing my screams for a couple years now and finally got my highs pretty damn good. But my question is how much of the volume of a scream is relied on by the mic? Obviously you're not gonna deafen a room without a mic but just how quiet are your screams without using a mic? I'm afraid of trying to push too much to get the necessary volume and end up doing more damage than good.

  • @Fenghorn_Zob
    @Fenghorn_Zob 9 років тому +1

When I do my low false chord screams they sound quite different to yours. I'm not sure what the cause is, because we both use the false chord technique, but I think it has something to do with the openness of your throat. My screaming is heavily influenced by Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth, so I consequentially try to sound like him, whereas I feel like you have a more "modern" vibe with the tone and your throat technique.

I have a pretty wide spread fry scream mastery when it comes to very lows to very highs, but I don't project it out nearly as loud or forceful. Is that normal, or a totally different technique other than fry? I generally try to preserve my vocal cords for the sake of keeping the ability to cleanly transition from lows to highs, ect, in a single breath. Is it still possible to do that with your shown technique? Kudos your forceful lows are fkin sik!

Baby steps! Keep doing what you're doing projected behind the vocals, use mucus back if your throat helps and keep trying from breathing diaphragm. Do not break your voice. Take it slooow.
I'm not an expert obviously, just what I've learned. Ps. If it's cool with you can you let me know how you're getting on now please? Curious to see how others are doing, thanks.
Pps. 5 seconds for a starter is very impressive. Mine was more of a 3 second one.
      Say "Boom" loud also Helps.

So far I’ve got it down a bit but whenever I try to talk when doing guttural it sounds like a garbled mess, how will I know I’m doing it right? I ask because I’m an aspiring deathmetal artist and I want to be like signs of the swarm

If anyone can help this would be SO helpful :c when I do my lows it sounds throaty and bad. How can I get rid of it? It's like rumbly. If someone can help me out I would really love you. Thank you!

Don't push or tense so hard. When they sound throaty usually it means you are constricting your throat too much so be lenses tense in a sense try less haha. Hope that helps.

Dickey7861 i am trying to learn how to growl and scream. but no matter what i try or technique i use and no matter how many times i practice my throat ends up getting really sore and then my throat clinches shut and i end up choking.
what am i doing wrong? if you could give me any suggestions i would appreciate it.

You are using just your throat and possibly not using your diaphragm much
