Do you tell the machine what material you are using so it knows how deep it needs to cut or engrave?

We have a line of Proofgrade materials that are specially formulated for your Glowforge. They come with a QR sticker in the corner which the camera on your Glowforge automatically reads and selects the perfect settings for.
If you plan on using non-Proofgrade materials you can absolutely adjust the speed and power of your laser to adjust the cut or engrave. Plus, you can save that as a custom setting so next time you use that material you've already got the settings saved! -Ellen

Can I use the art on an iPad? I do have photoshop, etc., even aspire. I guess I should ask if the software is Mac compatible?.

Absolutely! You can upload your designs into the Glowforge app directly from your iPad. There's no need to download software, you'll log into the Glowforge app using a web browser from any device that connects to WiFi like your iPhone or MacBook for example. -Ellen
