Great idea. I just picked up a set of Japanese Nike SQ Machspeed forged irons in great used condition. I'm wondering how these compare to a cheap set of modern irons bought for roughly the same price.
I literally still use these iorns and i just learned about him via youtube. I wish he'd go back and give a comparison club sense ive gotten back into golf looking for a set that fits me better now.
Id recommend these irons to anyone, I got a set when I turned 15 and kept them till I turned 20 and they never failed me once I got used to them and learned to swing better👌🏽
I was lucky enough to find a set of these in perfect condition last year, with the 3wood too. Best set of clubs ive used, absolutely love them! So funny seeing such a young rick too 🤣
Dear Rick, I'm from the future, 2020 to be exact. I want to let you know that you are still making videos and have gotten very popular and well known. LOTS of subscribers. Unfortunately, you no longer look like a young Hugh Grant (without the big hair, of course). In fact, you've grown a beard! I know, right! Although your video and reviewing skills are good now, they will be exponentially better when you get to 2020. Anyway, keep up the good work and I'll see you when you get here. Sincerely, A friend from the future
Hi Rick, loved the review. I've been waiting patiently to try these clubs since seeing the launch date. Saw your video today so took myself down to american golf this morning and had a few hits and couldn't believe it. They are so forgiving and looooooong! I then tried the callaway x2 hot, taylormade speedblade, mizuno jpx ez, and the nike still outperformed all of them for me. I actually hit a 6iron 179 yards carry which is unheard of for me and, and a 4 iron 204 yds. Needless to say, I am now £429 poorer (plus a couple of nike wedges to complete the set)! Anybody thinking of buying new clubs, try these - you won't be disappointed.....
Hi Rick I play off 6, i was using a set of T/Made Pro combo, decided I need a little help in the longer irons, I have demo'd a set of these for 2 weeks against a set of Ap1's Nike win hands down. I found them easier to hit, shape and the grooves gave fantastic control/spin. The look behind the ball was to me, like my old set, I understand peoples comments regarding the grips but had similar in the 90's on my set of lynx parallax and found ok in the wet to keep dry. I now live in the tropical North of New Zealand and had no problems in the heat either. So thanks to your review I am due any day my new set of Nike 2.0's. for me it wasn't the distance it was more about length and side dispertion , your review was spot on. So keep up the great reviews.
I got a set in 2014 didn't play with them until 2020 they about inch and a half too long and didn't realize they were regular shafts so I kept playing my Pings. Looking for Christmas decorations forgot the Nike were in my addict got them cut and gripped got 95 rounds in with them. I had jumbo grips on them until last week now I notice a big difference in distance
I’m a highschool golfer and I played with these for 3 seasons... and I was shooting low to single handicap. They’re are great clubs, but I need more player type clubs. I crushed these... seven iron was 175-185 club my wedges became 130 and down
Been swaying whether to buy these but you have just convinced me. I currently use Nike's Slingshot range but can't wait to get these in a couple months!
In 2024, just picked up a used set. At a giveaway price. Decided to hit a tray at the range. Three trays later. They are amazing irons. And I've hit and owned nearly everything over the years.
Still playing mine I bought new. The grips back in the day sold me, getting fitted for new clubs in a few weeks but I don't know how I feel about letting go of them yet.
Nice review rick. Love how you added in all the stats at the end. Def looking forward to getting fit for these bad boys. I can see myself re-gripping them tho. Keep up the good work. Kieran USA
Wow! Not only was it precise, but take away that one clear mis-hit (which was still pretty good) and the dispersion average is crazy tight. Solid distance, great precision, interesting ball flight....definitely one I want to check out. Thanks for the review. EDIT/ADD: Just noticed that you got some more distance out of this club in the SpeedBlade v. Covert 2.0 test (176 on a weaker hit, and 181 and 183 on two others), so that's interesting, too. But, you also had a wider dispersion. Overall, solid numbers. Thanks again!
Just to add to previous comment. If a set of irons like the covert 2.0 are all almost 1 inch longer than standard sets, if you need clubs to be 1 inch longer (after getting specs on a custom fit) then there's no point getting fitted on a standard set as all you lofts/lies/length are already cranked on these irons and many other similar sets
Loved your review. I will never forget, however, how amazed and excited you were after hitting the original (and ugly) Nike VRS Covert Irons. You kept repeating that the Club was so EASY to hit! In response, I went out and tried them myself. Easily the best club I have ever hit. Easier to hit than the Mizuno JPX 825, Ping G25, Titleist AP1 712, Callaway X-Hot, and the Taylormade Rocket Blades. They were long, forgiving, and had a very high ball flight. And they felt great. Easily tops, until the Nike rep asked me to demo the VRS Covert Forged irons.... I was shocked! They felt like Heaven, and were almost as long as their cast brother Covert. They also looked way better. I was all set to get the Nike Covert VRS forged irons, until BAM... The 2.0 s came out. The new 2.0s look way better, and sound like they are every bit as good as the originals. Maybe even better. Do you agree Rick? Berkeygil (16 hcp., Ping G25 driver, G25 4 FW, X-Hot 3, 4 & 5 Hybrids, Titleist DCI 822 OS irons, 5- PW, Vokey SM4 Wedges, 50 & 56, & Scotty Cameron Red X Mallet Putter.
Rick thanks for all your club testing. I have tested many irons that you have and have seen similar good results. My swing is not as good or as fast as yours, but it works well when I have a solid club in my hands with a heavier shaft. I have decided to go with these as they are very consistent and forgiven. I love this dynalite 105 (120gram) shaft. The kick is low so the carry is higher, longer, and so consistent. Thanks again for all your great reviews.
I played these for two weeks and the ball flight was too high for me and lost distance in my long irons. I switch out to the Cobra Bio Cell Plus irons that are just awesome clubs with the Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. On the launch monitor these Cobra irons are just awesome and they look like knives from the top line.
Distance means nothing if its not consistent. Yes the X 2 Hot might hit it further overall but the variation in distance is huge whereas those Nike seem to give plenty of distance but without the massive variation between a good and bad strike.
Rick, I am a mid handicap. Went in to hit the Callaway Apex CF 16 and loved them. However, I picked the Nike Coverts which added a little more distance to my shot and but a slight less accurate than the Apex. What is your choice? Kevin G.
Rick, The specs for that 7i are exactly the same for a 6i in the VR Pro blade (standard lofts/lies/lengths). That being said, if you had a custom fit for the VR Pro blade, or any other standard size club, and you needed 3/4 inch longer clubs, would it be best to just buy the covert 2.0 or any other set with similar specs (X-hot, rocketbladez, etc). Be interesting to hear your thoughts.
I am anxious to get your opinion and recommendation, which would you choose , X2 hot, Nike covert 2.0 forged and cast, Callaway Apex. Speed blades for distance, forgiveness and accuracy,m dispersion please. Thanks.
I have hit the newer Vapor irons but have not hit these. These are on special for $299.00 in the states. I am going to give them a try the next time I am in the store.
I was close to the PGA Tour Superstore this afternoon and stopped in and hit the 7 iron vs my 7 iron ( Tour Edge Exotic EXD with graphite shafts) while the lofts on the Tour Edge are strong I hit the steel shaft Covert further.
They had them on special at the PGA Tour Superstore but they are $299 and not $199 like Academy Sports. I finally hit them and they are great clubs. Great feel and forgiveness.
I hit these with a DG R300 shaft, great distance, tight dispersion and easy to launch, then hit them with the stock shaft, complete rubbish. Definitely one to get Custom Fit. Hit the Callaway x2 Hot at the same time, loads of distance, longer shaft, but just did not feel anything like the Covert 2.0.
***** The dispersion and response from the clubface of the Covert 2.0 was all over the place with the stock shaft, the clubface felt heavy and seemed hard to square the face on, I was really stunned by the result, I never thought shaft weight was that radical. The DG R300 gave me a lot more confidence, a really responsive and solid strike. Fact is, I have light shafts in my current irons and thought I was playing well. It isn't about how hard you swing it's about rhythm and tempo, the DG R300 assisted with that. As Rick says above, Custom Fitting really is the key.
Love your videos but as a pro wouldn't you agree that the fact your getting low launch and a high peak you would need a stiffer shaft? That's a ballooning shot for sure? Would be a Better test and better feed back if it was fitted close to your specs
hey Rick how do these compare to the old vrs covert irons? I nearly bought a set of the old ones till I was told the 2.0 were coming out soon, now I cant decide. Im probably one of the rare few who actually prefer the look of the old ones to the 2.0 but your figures with the 2.0 make it hard not to want them.
RickShielsPGAGolf Great review: The numbers don't lie & they are pretty impressive, maybe not the longest as you eluded you, but dispersion, distance control is impressive for that type of club for sure. But for me I don't like the way they look at all & whilst I realize I'm not the target audience, I couldn't get on with the really chunky top line & definitely don't like the back or the grip. Although Nike are now making some technically impressive clubs overall I just don't the look of most of them, but I get that other folks will. Looking forward to seeing you with them in the bag and out on tour though !!!!!!! ;)
It would be super cool if you reviewed these older clubs again and compared them to new clubs
I think he could do a whole series about "are _______ still good?" and review clubs that are 15-5 years old
agree

Got these second hand at the local golf shop yesterday, shot my best round yet with them. Impressive.
Still hitting them today.
Me too, great irons.
Me too
Started playing with them today 😂
Rick, I just bought a set of these and played them last Sunday. Your review of these irons was spot on. Really like them. Thanks for your reviews.

Saw these on clearance and after watching this video thought why not try them. What a great set of irons. Thanks to you Rick for your input.

I would get fit on the set you require
Quick question. Does the Nike covert 2.0 iron set for men and woman share the same heads? Perhaps it’s different shafts?

Hi Rick, watched loads of your videos but can't find anything on Adams XTD irons. Any chance you can get your hands on them and post a video review?
Distance means nothing if its not consistent. Yes the X 2 Hot might hit it further overall but the variation in distance is huge whereas those Nike seem to give plenty of distance but without the massive variation between a good and bad strike.
Yes it was a very accurate golf club. Thanks for the comment
How would you compare this one to the Forged version, The 2.0 covert forged. Cheers.
Rick, I am a mid handicap. Went in to hit the Callaway Apex CF 16 and loved them. However, I picked the Nike Coverts which added a little more distance to my shot and but a slight less accurate than the Apex. What is your choice?

Its always worth getting custom fit.
Good video Rick, like these apart from tour wrap grips, not great in the wet UK
i live in australia an i think them grips are piss personally to.

Can't let this set go, the grips needed changing asap, but the clubs are amazing
Im not sure which to buy, 2.0 or the forged one. What is the main difference between these two? And are the forgiveness the same?
What do you do with all these old clubs???

Could you tell me which ones are better. The covert 2.0 or the cobra bio cell.
Thanks a lot for the great review Rick. Are the 2.0 irons as easy to hit as the old covert?
The old covert in my opinion are the most forgiving and easy hitting clubs ever!!!
RickShielsPGAGolf oh that´s interesting - so you think that the old covert irons are better than the covert 2.0?
Still have these in the bag in 2020 lol
