    Just discovered this channel and I'm so glad I did. I'm studying as an illustrator/graphic designer and animating in Ae is incredibly intimidating to me, but you make it look easy.

    Hey Ben, one thing I thought of is for your eye blink, you have a set of keyframes on both layers so you would need to change more than one layers keyframes if you wanted different timings, etc. I would recommend only using one layer and using an expression for additional layers. So you could have keyframes on the 'eyes - closed' layer, and the eyes open layer(s) can follow these keyframes, just in reverse via an expression!
    Code:
    BLINK = 100; //swap 100 with the correct figure
    BLINK-thisComp.layer("Eyes - Closed").transform.opacity
    I understand that this might not be much of a big deal, but if you're amending projects for clients, it's best to get things easier to be changed. With my method, you can modify the keyframes of one layer and it will control multiple more!

      Haha, it's worth it for the results, character animator still looks very janky. Hopefully in the future it'll improve more :) Still not bad for lip-sync on a budget though

    Aaaahhh i finally able to watch this tutorial as I've been busy with work, and i remember this on your instastories. The toggle hold key is something I never even knew, because i would have applied one key frame, copied that paste it just before the start of another keyframe!

    Nice job. Just curious on background information about it. Why not use illustrator for animating vectors? Does the artist just prefer Photoshop for some reason?

    • @BenMarriott
      @BenMarriott  5 років тому

      Thank you! I'm not exactly sure. Most likely to have better control over those textured edges. And to have that paintbrush texture in the beard and armor. :)

    • @SplittingProductions
      @SplittingProductions 5 років тому

      @@BenMarriott I suppose that would indeed be a good reason. There's nothing wrong with working in Photoshop for this, I just prefer not to myself in case I want to resize later but that's just me.

    I always worry/overthink about the pixel quality in a Photoshop file not being "high res" enough for a professional animation on After Effects, so I've currently just been using illustrator as vectors retain that smooth image regardless of how much I scale.
    Though I do miss all the textures and ease of coloring I get in Photoshop.
    May I know your thoughts about this? Are there recommended dimensions for PS files that will be imported into AE? Or is this simply a "deal with it" kinda thing with regards to Photoshop's quality?

    I would like to know, what's the difference between using PhotoShop to After Effect, and using Illustrator to After Effect. Cause PhotoShop can be used for drawing with each separated layer which later moved to After Effect, and Illustrator is used like that too, so what's the difference?
