Josh, I have tried to connect to IC 705 (as an access point), but for some reason the utility does not recognize the 705 as a network, even though it shows up in my list of networks available to my PC. My PC will connect to the 705 directly (without the utility software), but will not connect or recognize the 705 through the wizard setup. Any suggestions?
@Steven H I am not going through a router I am trying to access direct. The IC 705 is broadcasting its SSID, but the software does not recognize my ID/password.
@Steven H Thanks for the response. My call sign is IU3JNT, but I think I finally got it to connect, albeit in a roundabout way. I am on QRZ and would be interested in a PM to see how you have yours connected. 73s
You sir, not only sold me a ic 705, the buddipole but you also just fix my software. The support agent did not know about the MOD V audio setting. You sir are a rock star!!!
I know that the conventional wisdom is that new hams do not start out with a QRP transceiver. However, there is simply nothing out there that compares with the feature set and capabilities of this little radio. With what you have shown here I can put this little guy on the network and while sitting on the couch with the wife in the evening play with JS8, FT8 or the other "quiet" modes. Makes it easier to maintain that "happy wife, happy life" balance for sure.
Other radio can do similar when at home. But your point is still solid and this will work in that capacity. The ic-7610 and all the flex radios will work this way too.
New ham, bought the 705 as my first HF rig. I'm coming at it a bit from the other direction. I live in an apartment condo that's lousy for RF SiriusXM goes away when I enter the shadow on the north side of the building, even before I pull into the underground parking. So I knew I'd have to be portable. But that's fine, since field operations are what most interest me anyway. Knowing all that going in means I shouldn't get frustrated with "too few" QSOs. I just need to start getting out. I'm a few miles from the southern end of the San Francisco Bay. There's a county park there. I'll start heading over there and see how things go. It's not a far drive over the mountains to the Pacific Coast, either. 73 de KN6NPZ
Josh, just another thank you for this video. I have, thanks to you, successfully paired my MS Surface GO 2 tablet using the Icom RS-BA1 remote software with the IC-705. Up and now running are VARA FM, VARA HF, VARA Chat, JS8Call, and of course, Winlink Express. Next we'll add in the FLDIGI suite. This is an extraordinary combo for field EMCOMM work. Your video helped me cut through hours of hunt-and-peck manual reading. Five stars. Thumbs up! David A., KK6DA
Josh, thanks for the step-by-step guide. I don't even own the radio, but that's the sort of thing people need starting out. This is an awesome advance in connectivity.
This is a bit off-topic, but I've found a near-perfect travel hard case for the IC-705. It is a 15-size cigar travel humidor made by "Cigar Caddy", "15-stick". It and other similar ones can be found on the famous river store site. And thanks for the fantastic video. I never would have figured it out by myself. 73's, N2GX
I was having a IC 705 RFI issue with hard wire USB connection and was getting Audio failures with all the digital modes. This is such a great solution to that problem using the rig as an AccessPoint. RFI problem solved! Thanks for the great video.
Great stuff. I'll need to set this up on mine. I have had that RS-BA1 software for a while, but never used it because I don't have an Icom currently running in the Shack. Glad I bought it now, though. This will be fun to tinker with.
As long as people keep paying for it there is not much motivation to innovate fast. They can milk you slowly for new features over time. Every now and again something like the 705 comes out and forces the push forward amongst vendors .. I'm very happy with mine.
Great video Josh! I just want to add a step that could save alot of frustration. Be sure to turn off any real time virus protection. I spent the better part of 3 hours trying to get this to work on both the IC-705 and the IC-7610. Neither worked until I turned off the real time virus protection in the Windows 10 security panel. I got nothing but hamlib errors prior to turning it off. FYI: You can configure RS-BA1 to work with radios other than ICOM, I have my Kenwood TS-2000 also connected. The RS-BA1 remote application simply creates virtual com ports and virtual sound connections. 73' John
JS8Call and WSJT-X are difficult to configure, erratic, and unstable, by even the most charitable standards. I have the MS Surface 3 and the Evolve Maestro running Windows, and getting FT8 working consistently is erratic, with both a USB direct connection to the 705 or WiFi. SDR-Control for the iPad, however, is incredibly stable, and as close to perfection as software can be. Within minutes of first loading it, I was making contacts, and have logged hundreds with it so far. For those Hams who tire of fiddling and just want to make contacts, pick up an iPad or Mac, and try SDR-Control. Its in a class by itself.
Thanks, Josh! I've connected wirelessly, with the radio as access point, to Ham Radio Deluxe. I'm still in trial mode on HRD but it looks like I'll be purchasing a license next month. I bought my 705 last summer, shortly after passing the General. It's been living in a storage box until I pulled it and the ARRL Amateur Extra textbook out last week. I had my first QSO on D-STAR using Doozy: the nearest D-STAR repeater is about 17 miles away. I've built one of the KM4ACK EFHW kits and cut a speaker wire antenna for 17m. I just have to start getting out with it. My apartment condo is lousy for RF: my cell phone barely works in here. I'm just starting to learn CW, so thanks for your tips there as well! 73 de KN6NPZ
Great run down Josh. Now I can get rid of my noisy USB cable. This will bring my use of the IC 705 to the next level. Now, I have got to go and buy the software, lol.
Battery, battery, battery. The 705 is a great QRP portable POTA/SOTA radio pulling about 7/18 watts Rx/Tx from a 12V battery at full 10W RF output power. I would imagine switching from USB to Wi-Fi would be a negligible additional power drain unless something is really wrong with the chipset, but the measurement would be good to know and share. The big challenge for portable operation is the power drain in the computer used to run digital modes. The most efficient computer I have found is the newer MacBook Pros running the Apple M series chips. Intel based computers do not last long on their batteries when running digital modes due to the constant FFT running to process the incoming audio. Armed with a small 12V LiPo and a 20-40W solar array one can be fully self sufficient during the day and through the night powering both the computer and 705. Alas this trick only works on windows, a big miss not supporting linux or macOS. Ok for the shack where you have unlimited power, but not out in the sticks. Where is my 12 foot long USB cable???
Having Windows, MacOS and Linux I have no issues keeping them charged in the field and running amateur radio apps for what I am interested in. It is true that MacOS has the least variety on apps.
Now this is one fantastic Outstanding informative video. Thank you so so much. Keep up the good work. I just have to say this. The 705 is awesome but here are a couple of points that concern me that probably bother no one else but me. I am with ARES and must be able to send messages to the red cross. I do it by winlink packet. And I have found out when it really matters, I have had to use the full 50 watts on my 2m rig to gain access to a distant repeater at times and the reduced wattage on the 705 restricts that. The only other thing that is really a thorn in my side is the 705 has no internal antenna tuner. I know that does not bother many people at all because they use resonant antennas. But hey I think we are all allowed our own personal pet peeves. And mine is I just like to have an internal antenna tuner built in and the 705 does not. Whew now that I got that off my chest I have to admit there are a ton of features on this 705 that I really really like.
Josh, have you considered doing a video on how to get digital up and running with wfview instead of the iCom software? I’m not associated with wfview, just found it as a free alternative that has windows, Linux, and Mac OS support. As a Mac user, I would really like to see someone demonstrate set up and use of wireless IC-705+wfview+wsjt-x
I found someone else with same issue and they said you have to manually put the radio in usb-d or it won't transmit. Now it transmits but looks like that might have broke RX.
This is exactly what I do. I connect 705 to a hardrock 50 HF amp through a Hobby PCB Hardrock50-500 interface. Works great, get me contacts via SSB out to 5000 miles during openings. I run all the logging through Ham Radio Deluxe. Now, if I can only get this wireless connection to work!
9:07 - Whooo- boy - did someone pull some UA-cam Cooking Show magic here. Some pertinent steps were glossed over/skipped in this transition. No mention of having to add the radio of choice from the Radio List tab and changing the default Speaker/Mics, etc.
I realize this video is for the new 705, which I do have. I was running through the same config for my IC-7610 last week, trying to get rig control working with RS-BA-1 version 2, similar to what you did. I wanted to see if I could get WSJT-X FT8 to operate in the same way you illustrated. And got stuck at Rig Control... apparently HamLib didn't agree with the rig... Not looking for an answer here, other than to see if you by chance ran into any tips or gotcha's during the Rig Control setup sequence? In theory, it should all just work when using WSJT-X. I have the rig set to 7610, CI-V at default for 7610, baud rate exactly as in your 705 demonstration, and Test Connection fails (with an error window) to control the rig. Error says: Command freq return rejected by the rig. What I can say is that I do have the RS-BA1 software working with Icom's RS-BA1 interface. Rig control works in Icom's RS-BA1 control, no problem. Anyway, I thought I would put this out there for other users.
I have had similar issues from release candidate versions of WSJT-X. Try version 2.3.0. It fixed my problems. As an aside for 705 users it has the 705 listed, so you can use the official A4h as the CI-V ID.
@@MatFarringtonInfo Thanks for the suggestion. I have reverted to 2.3.0 -- and did one other thing, I restarted the 7610. It appears the communication can get a bit buggy and the easiest way to clear it out is to power cycle the 7610. Hope this helps other 7610 owners.
The two connection options you review at 8:05, can you explain the purpose of each? This has me a bit confused. Edit: After a bit more fiddling and thinking: Use the connect over wifi (Station) if you are at home and have a network? Use Access Point when in the field such as a POTA activation where there probably isnt a wireless network available? one more edit: Before you get too frustrated, if you are using wsjt-x, try shutting the software down and reconnecting it, or a reboot. The COM devices get hung up. I think i wasted a good hour or so before I realized this. lol
Thanks for the great video Josh. Our club is looking to install a 7300 at a remote site because of RF noise issues. Will we be able to use AREDN to control the radio using Icoms software.
Is there any way to get a downloadable version of the RS-BAT1 software? The laptop that I use for digital modes does not have a CD drive, and a LOT of new laptops do not have CD drives in them anymore.
Is there a follow up video showing the configurations for WinLink specs? I think I have HF control working, but not FM as there isn't a radio setup for Vara FM. Thanks in advance N7MKY
It's a cool setup, I just wish RS-BA1 was half the price that it is. It's a bit overkill for the 705 though when you consider Win4Icom can do 99% of the same stuff for less over one USB cable. I don't think anyone is wanting a Flex type remote setup with their 10W 705. :D I have a feeling the WLAN is more geared toward their DStar+Mobile app setup. I tried getting this setup to work with Win4Icom, which also supports remote radios, but it still relies on it's own server app directly connected to the radio. I couldn't get it to talk to the 705 even though it uses the same ports, unless I missed something...
I have tried over and over and over again, the computer just will not connect to the radio following these instructions. It shows Connection Failed every single time.
What's even worse is that they expect people to pay for the badness. It's almost like all of the old sysadmins and engineers for IBM and the telephone company retired and wrote their own software... oh wait.....
UX design is a real art and costs a lot of money to do properly plus you need a developer who knows how to implement it. Most of the UX toolkits are designed for webapps not installed apps
@HamRadioCrashCourse Great video as usual. Just a thing. I'm trying the same setup remotely operating my 705 through ddns. No chance for the WSJTX or similar to get to CAT succesfully. The virtual port that the Icom Remote Utility deploys is occupied from the RS_BA1v2 application so no chance for other apps to use the same virtual port on my PC. Any workaround about this?
It's not immediately obvious where one can actually acquire the RS-BA1 software, am I missing something? Icom doesn't seem to make it available on their website.
Is there any kind of lag between the radio and the laptop as far as receiving? If so is it only a matter of milliseconds so you wouldn't even know it? Awesome Video!
i don't seem to be able to connect my IC705 with the Utility. It is asking for a Virtual Com Port, but every one I chose it gives me a message to say "IT CANT BE USED" any idea?
That’s a great question and was hoping Josh would jump in - he’s a thorough guy ! Recent info I have is NO, it will not. Awaiting a FW update to do this. For now, you will have to use a GPS dongle at the computer to give GPS/time data. De WB4YDL
Great (and for me timely, as I was trying and failing to do this) video! Got it working (although thru Flrig as "radio"). What would be the easiest way to switch between wireless and cable - is it only the one connector choice or ... ???
Hi Josh. I have watched your video about 5 times. I have all the settings set like you do in the video, with the exception of network name and all that. Everything seems to respond correctly but I am not hearing the audio on my surface pro (windows 10). Any ideas of where to look to resolve this issue? I checked the comments and didn’t find anything there. I guess I am “That Guy” now…lol. Thanks for any help you can offer.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse This is the hardest part.... I'm still fumbling around with this. Had it working great in station mode, tried network mode through home LAN, cant get the MIC audio from the PC into the radio. Went back to station mode to have some fun, now I cant get that to work. The audio configs can get really complicated. Between the radio, software and the PC. Lots of room for error. Wish I understood the software settings better, think I may have to crack open the RS-BA1 manual. ugh!
I've seen prior videos by a few folks on using the GPS on the IC-705 to discipline the system clock on a Windows/Pi box attached via USB. Does the IC-705's server offer that up over wireless as well as the basic CAT/PTT? If so I'm converting my manpack station immediately. Great rig and great video! de W0NTC
Could you do a RS-BA1 vs Win4Icom software comparison? As far as I can tell, the RS-BA1 comes on a disk - It's been years since I've had a DVD or cd reader on any of my computers. Can it be transferred to a flash drive if I know someone who has a CD reader? Some software prevents copying to a different format. Thx!
The short answer is *maybe*. At qrp levels I was not affected. at 100 watts with an amp, the computer freezes a second. This is likely grounding related.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse RFI is a problem with the IC705 with hard-wired USB connections in some circumstances. I have that problem operating in one room of my house but it is non-existent in other rooms. Specifically, I was interested in this video because it works around that problem without the wire. When I plug the radio into my computer, you can see the noise level jump on the scope. The practical result, while running digital modes, is that I am getting Audio failures when attempting to TX. I guess I could operate in a portable setting by tethering the IC 705 to my iPhone hotspot? Hope this works.
I have a question: do 130-174 mhz vhf and 400-520mhz work at 700 / 800mhz or i will need to buy a device that supports 700 / 800mhz do you have any information if it blinds vhf and uhf at 700 / 800mhz
no it won't the frequency range says it all if by "blind" you meant interference then no you can understand more about radios if you read legit papers about it
@@loughkb Just my luck. Watched this video a month ago....saw nothing about free software any where. Ordered, spent and received the RS-BA1 ($125 @ Gigaparts w/discount) ...watch this video again to set it all up and BAM! Here's your post about WFVIEW.....$125 too late for me. Thanks though!
Fabulous video, Josh. I would not have been able to understand pairing the MS Surface Go 2 with my new IC-705. Question: what is the quickest way to switch from digital to voice on digital nets that are voice-directed? David A., KK6DA
Curious if anyone has found a way to run the RS-BA1 remote control SW at the same time as WSJT-X? Use case is running my 705 remotely and being able to adjust power out through the remote control while operating FT8. With WiFi and USB connectivity, there are a lot of combinations. I've tried a few with no success.
I think is good to point out that between setup the radio and then the software you have to connect the wifi in your computer (In my case a Surface Go) to the radio's wifi. theeen you will be able to do the wizard in the software. Is not shown in the video and took me a couple of minutes of "damn, doesnt work bro!!!" LOL
They could probably knock $200 off the 705 price by omitting every control and display, except the power switch, and making a "requires computer!" Version of it. Essentially, like a hot spot with more capabilities. Duh?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Sorry, I was just getting cranky. I get overwhelmed with touchscreens and technology these days. I should just buy an old radio with buttons ;)
Note: this video works with firmware 1.20 and all later versions.

What do you do to load the RSBA1 if you don’t have cdrom? Can you download and activate with the key provided with the disc?
The two connection options you review at 8:05, can you explain the purpose of each? This has me a bit confused.
Edit:
After a bit more fiddling and thinking:
Use the connect over wifi (Station) if you are at home and have a network?
Use Access Point when in the field such as a POTA activation where there probably isnt a wireless network available?
one more edit: Before you get too frustrated, if you are using wsjt-x, try shutting the software down and reconnecting it, or a reboot. The COM devices get hung up. I think i wasted a good hour or so before I realized this. lol
Yes!
Thanks for the great video Josh. Our club is looking to install a 7300 at a remote site because of RF noise issues. Will we be able to use AREDN to control the radio using Icoms software.
hi Can I use the Icom model iC 750 receiver and transmitter only shortwave receiver...Is it a good idea
Outstanding tutorial....even if it is on Windows. 😂
Now of only we could crack the nut on Linux.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I need to acquire a 705 so I can start hacking at it. 😀
@@KM4ACK I agree, I think we all would get alot out of you having a 705 :D
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Look at "kappanhang" , Kind of a Linux Clone of RS-BA Connector
instead of the RS-BA1_V2 can you use wfview? I am trying to run FLdigi, flmsg to receive RACES messages when we do our Fire Station drills.
hi and thanks for sharing this video I have a question you have to go on the internet settings of you pc and switch the network to the ic-705?
Depends on what you are doing. If running the 705 as an access point, yes. Join the 705 wlan network
@@HamRadioCrashCourse thanks !!
Very cool feature ! Thank you for inspiring people!!😊👏🏻
Is it even possible to set up IC 705 wireless with Winlink? I only see USB option in WinLink and no WLAN.
Nice vid! Just one stupid question.. where did you get this stylus pen? It’s big and nice !!
A bit off topic, but I got my Signal Stick today, for my HT, works great.
Is there any way to get a downloadable version of the RS-BAT1 software? The laptop that I use for digital modes does not have a CD drive, and a LOT of new laptops do not have CD drives in them anymore.
FINALLY!!! Thanks Josh!
Where did the server address came from where? Its not the same as you show on the radio as what you enter into the utility program. Around 8:50. txs
Any hope of using digital modes from linux over bluetooth or wifi to the ic-705?
I have not explored win4icom. Idk that the wlan option will work, but I can try.
Josh, got an issue: do you have the Monitor function in digital? Can't seem to turn that on for WLAN. David A., KK6DA
I have tried over and over and over again, the computer just will not connect to the radio following these instructions. It shows Connection Failed every single time.
How is ham software so bad? It's like they try to make it bad. The big guys really need to go hire a non-ham UX team that is under 40.
Buy it at any of the major ham radio retailers.
Thanks for the video. Pretty audacious of Icom to require additional proprietary software to use these features though.
Is there any kind of lag between the radio and the laptop as far as receiving? If so is it only a matter of milliseconds so you wouldn't even know it? Awesome Video!
I’ve experienced no appreciable lag.
i don't seem to be able to connect my IC705 with the Utility. It is asking for a Virtual Com Port, but every one I chose it gives me a message to say "IT CANT BE USED" any idea?
Yes, in the ICOM remote software you need to specify which virtual com port to make sense.
Good job there is a pause button on the video and I'm still lost
How did you get WSJT-X working wireless? There is only a USB setting-no Wi-Fi?
Watch the video. I show you how.
A disadvantage is losing WiFi connection between tablet or laptop and phone providing Internet connectivity in the field when in AP mode.
Thanks for the video, very helpful. Can you also receive data from the gps via wireless. Cheers
That’s a great question and was hoping Josh would jump in - he’s a thorough guy ! Recent info I have is NO, it will not. Awaiting a FW update to do this. For now, you will have to use a GPS dongle at the computer to give GPS/time data. De WB4YDL
your laptop, what is it?
looks rugged, great for outdoor HAM activities
It’s a used Tougbook CF-C2
@@HamRadioCrashCourse awesome! thank you
can you disable the 705 screen in this set-up to save battery? seems redundant
Why is this not possible over bluetooth?
Great (and for me timely, as I was trying and failing to do this) video! Got it working (although thru Flrig as "radio"). What would be the easiest way to switch between wireless and cable - is it only the one connector choice or ... ???
What stylus is that?
Can this be done on a Yaesu FT-991A?
You just need to make sure you have the audio devices set correctly on the ICOM remote app.
Great rig and great video! de W0NTC
It *should* work. I have not tested that yet though. I’ll take a look.
It looks like it’s over gps only right now. The B port isn’t virtualized I see at this time.
Thx!
Yes, it can be transferred to a flash drive and loaded. I did that with my PC tablet.
hello, do you think icom rs-ba1 software would run on macbook M1 with parallels virtual machine (windows 11 ARM)? thanks
If it runs Windows stably, sure.
Can this be done with a IC-FT-991?
do 705s have unique MAC addresses?
Does RS-BA1 let you do "DR" mode ?
Be nice if the remote utility was sold separately.
Can RF effect the wireless connection like it does with a wired connection?
@@mark1161 generally putting a choke on the coax at the 705 feed point is all you need. Try it.

Presents exist now, but didn’t when this video was made.
impossible to connect ic705 with your methode
Is a laptop with windows home a good laptop to run ham digital?
Yes
I have a question: do 130-174 mhz vhf and 400-520mhz work at 700 / 800mhz or i will need to buy a device that supports 700 / 800mhz do you have any information if it blinds vhf and uhf at 700 / 800mhz
Your question does not make sense, and does not appear to have anything to do with this video.
no it won't
the frequency range says it all
if by "blind" you meant interference then no
you can understand more about radios if you read legit papers about it
$150 software add to an already expensive $1300 QRP radio is further insult to injury
I could barley figure out the 1.20 update let alone crazy stuff like this.
I can believe after spending over 1k on this radio, I have to purchase $150 software. It's bs.
wfview will let you do it for free.
Kevin is right - free software just as good.
@@loughkb thanks for the wfview video you created recently. Got it up and running, works great.
@@J0HN3 Glad to know I helped. Thanks for watching!
Yes. You run the ICOM remote app and not the RS-BA1 software. Then just program wsjtx to the remote software.
Man this is the fifth ic705 video I've seen today? Odd cause never looked for one and don't really want one.
... But you NEED one!
Cool, we can Pay I-CON to enable features in the hardware. Guess I'll stick with my FT-900 for a few more years.
oh no, I have to pay for software. cry me a river
Please answer me to a question
They could probably knock $200 off the 705 price by omitting every control and display, except the power switch, and making a "requires computer!" Version of it. Essentially, like a hot spot with more capabilities. Duh?
But why, really? I think I'd rather focus on my ab workout or feed poor people :)
Why stop there, you should start learning about curing cancer and do it!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Sorry, I was just getting cranky. I get overwhelmed with touchscreens and technology these days. I should just buy an old radio with buttons ;)
