It was "All i need is a pair of wheels" because in 1985 record producer David Foster approached John Parr about writing and recording the theme song for the upcoming movie St. Elmo's Fire. John actually used recently injured and wheelchair bound Canadian Hansen's story as his inspiration for writing the song St. Elmo's Fire, “Man in Motion”. Rick Hansen did a world tour on his wheelchair to raise awareness across the globe.
*wheels
Cool!
I know, I’m Canadian. Rick Hansen
I wish the interview was longer. Please bring him back for a Colbert Questionert
Yeah, that was way too short.
I loved Andrew McCarthy the most back then!
You know it's gonna be lit when Liza, and Sammy mentioned in the title!
I was floored when I found out they all had this negative perception of the term Brat Pack. I always thought it was just in reference to the fact that they were younger than the original Rat Pack, not that they were actual brats. Hopefully now they'll all start doing projects together. They all look amazing.
I thought that the term "brat pack" refer to being raised in Hollywood as children of hollywood stars and going into film themselves. "brat" is also refer to being raised in the military
The Liza story is INSANE. I was a baby/child when the Brat Pack were doing their thing, but I was heavily brought up on Liza, Judy, and the Rat Pack. I can't even fathom being in that sort of situation.
I was thinking the EXACT same thing!!! What a story! I had to save this video to come back and watch it every so often to hear that again.
Andrew hits thr nail on the head with his "I’m not reslly there" take - he’s just an avatar for the memories of their youth.
Man in motion was written about Rick Hansen a Canadian activist raising awareness for people with disabilities by wheeling his wheel chair across the country. Hence the line, "all I need is this pair of wheels."
I love that he said he always thought it was wings... so many of us did!
Actually it was across the world. I never knew he was the inspiration for that song.
Could definitely do an extended interview here.
Really appalled that they didn't know that it is "wheels". The man in motion is Rick Hansen, a Canadian paraplegic athlete who wheeled over 40,000km through 34 countries during '85 to '87 to raise awareness of the abilities of people with physical limitations.
@@user-cz3mp4jm4u I was literally thinking that! He traveled through our Canadian town of Leamington in honour of Terry Fox in the late 80s.

An amazing doc! 80s nostalgia really be gettin' us some great content. Thanks for using this film as an extended therapy session, Andrew! Such a creative reflection of The Brat Pack. Hopefully Sony gives us a St. Elmos' Fire sequel!
Great idea!!
Weekend at Bernie’s!!!
If you see this, please send positive vibes my way. I’ve been struggling with health issues for years and could use your prayers.
🙌 Try Spinal Flow sessions.
Positive vibes sent to you!! XOXOXO HUGS AND KISSES TOO!
I hope you are better. Good thoughts your way.
He's still hot. I wish he was in more films.
Did you see him in the Resident (TV show)? He was really good!
Rick Hansen used St. Elmo’s Fire as the theme song for his Man in Motion Tour. The lyric is definitely ‘pair of wheels’.
Other way around. Rick's story inspired the lyrics at David Foster's suggestion.
The composers of St. Elmo's Fire theme song were inspired by Canadian athlete Rick Hansen, who at the time was going around the world in his wheelchair to raise awareness for spinal cord injuries when writing the song - thus the reference to the "wheels" (not wings).
He looks great for 61 years old!!!!!!
And probably at a much lower cost than Demi Moore, who is actually 18 days older than him.
What a nice story about Liza Minelli. I hope Andrew gets to see her again.
I had such a crush on Andrew McCarthy. He looks exactly the same ❤️
I am 50 and I absolutely loved the "Brat Pack"!! My favorite movies often featured actors who weren't even in the "pack", like "The Outsiders". But "Class" is my favorite AM movie, Rob Lowe, hubba hubba!! [Before Lowe got into trouble lol]
What a great story!!💙💯
Colbert is the most perfect host pf late night TV.❤
I remember nearly every day of the summer of 1984. But when I hear that this article came out in 1985, it sounds like ancient history. I mean 39 years before 1985 was just after WWII
Pair of wheels? Do we count wheels in pairs? Is that a bicycle? lol
To answer the question Why the Wheels:
The "Man in Motion" & "Pair of Wheels" is a reference to Jim Hansen a 🇨🇦 who went around the World Tour in a specially designed wheel chair to raise money for Spinal Cord Research. Hence St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion) sub title.
Andrew McCarthy reminds me of Martin Short here.
"pair of wheels"..let me Google that for you...On March 21, 1985, the Man In Motion World Tour waved an emotional goodbye to the crowd at Oakridge Mall to begin a journey that would take Canadian Rick Hansen wheelchair athlete and his team over 40,000 km through 34 countries to raise awareness about the potential of persons with disabilities.
We love andrew mccarthy
I used to have a huge crush on him decades ago. His eyes haven't lost their lustre and his smile hasn't faded! Seems like a wonderful person, helping people remember their youth from the 80's ❤
I thought it was “wings.”
8 minutes... that's it...?
One of my favorite movies is St. Elmo's Fire! It makes me happy and sad at the same time for the Nostalgia of the 80's, when I was young and trying to figure out life after being popular and in a sorority in college, then graduating and it all ending before I was ready for it to! Then being thrust into the REAL WORLD, and getting into it kind of blew. LOL! The movie shows and describes it perfectly, and the whole cast was also perfect. One of those movies that I can start watching no matter how long previously on, before I discover it again. I had such a crush on Rob and Andrew!
Was a great time in the 80s
Saw it, loved it!
I am so glad that he didn't hurl in Liza Minnelli's car.
Ah yes, Andrew. xoxo Thank you for the movies!
He's my first crush❤
Andrew! Loved the Brat Pack movies..you are still adorable..
OK LET'S PUT THIS TO REST>>>>>>>>John Parr in the FIRST chorus sings "Wheels"......In the second and ONLY chorus he sings "Wings". The next 2 choruses he sings "Wheels" again!
His line about being the avatar for those of us who were teenagers coming of age is so spot on.
Yayyy Andrew!!! my crush from the 80s!! I wish this interview was longer though! I want more stories from him! I have the book, still reading it! so far so good!:)
Mandella lol- i knew it as wings too
Loved Brats!!
This was too short! Should've had him there for 2 segments. Hope he has him back on the show soon, as it seems like he has a lot of good stories to tell.
Sweet story
It’s truly remarkable Demi Moore is actually 18 days older than Andrew.
Why does an older Andrew McCarthy look like a young Jerry Lee Lewis?
Of course "Brat Pack" took off. It's just like the "Rat Pack." Every one loved the Rat Pack.
A pair of wheels, I think, references Rick Hansen, BC hero of disability access, who wheelchair marathoned during the 80s.
Suddenly there's tears streaming down my face, I don't know why...
- I can tell you why: Cocaine is a hell of a drug 😊
Ok? And?
Andrew McCarthy is the perfect guy to make this doc. Why wasn't Crispin Glover, Sean Penn or tom cruise in the crew? Or keanu? Or RDJ? Or Michael j fox?
Good morning stephen colbert fans
It's wheels because it was inspired by Rick Hansen the "Man in Motion".
Andrew is great, did great work post-Brat Pack too!!! I loved him in The Resident, a surprisingly good show! He played a narcissistic pediatric surgeon with a God complex and a crippling addiction problem and gave the role a lot of subtlety. 👌 Gonna watch this documentary for sure!
Brat Pack should act in more movies.
I’m gonna be your man in motion, all I need is for you to apply this lotion. 😂 I know. Sic
Creep.
What a fun person!
He's still adorable!!
Amazing story!!! Wow 🤩
I met them when they came to Sacramento to lobby for something (I can't remember now) and they were in the Capital's lunch room. It was great.
Best film - less than zoro, and I also love man on fire. (my two f films)
Less Than Zero was great! Too sad and realistic, but great!
Andrew McCarthy is certainly very eloquent.
Andrew played a drug addicted Pediatric Surgeon in the series The Residents. Hadn’t seen him in anything for years, but he nailed this part.
Drunk enough to remember 😅🎉❤
What a great story! I can’t even imagine being in that sphere of legendary fame for one night, but he got to do it. How lucky.
Andrew was always the best of the male brat packers. When the others were gauche and super adolescent, he was quiet and sensitive. I empathised with him a lot.
You are thinking of the roles he played, he only got the "quiet and sensitive" roles, until he dried up we all forgot about him. Truth be told there was a lot of bad casting in the 80s.
@@jhegre Yeah, I only know him from his classic brat pack movies. And yeah - bad casting bad movies!
Just think of all the dross they forced Corey Haim into!
Dang, Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Junior! Great story. Best wishes.
Could have had some info about the brat pack and the documentary?
Stephen colbert is my god? I am his avatar?
That's a great story
Lovely, Andrew
What a FABULOUS story about Liza and Sammy. Too much fun.
Andy, they can't take that away from you
❤
Has anyone seen the behind-the-scenes?
Andrew has aged very well. He looks a bit like Gavin Newsom. So had a crush on him in high school
Not as well as Demi Moore, who is actually 18 days older than him. Although I imagine he spends far less on his beauty regimen.
"still feeling nauseous, so I start singing 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'."
Who amongst us *hasn't* been there, am I right?
I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flying higher and higher
Gonna be your man in motion, all I need's this pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's fire
I can hear the music playin', I can see the banners fly
Feel like you're back again, and hope ridin' high
Gonna be your man in motion, all I need's this pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's fire
I can see a new horizon underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's flying higher and higher
Gonna be your man in motion, all I need's this pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin', St. Elmo's fire
Apparently it's the only wild night he ever had. He tells this story on every talk show or podcast.
And aren’t you’re rude? How many crazy stories do you have about hanging out with legends like Liza Minelli and Sammy Davis Jr?
Piss off with the negativity. It’s just not needed.

Would have been cool if Stephen had handed Andrew a double vodka.
He still has a ton of charm. If he was in Stranger Things, that would have been expert level casting.
Well that was weird.
Feel like my experience with this interview was kinda like his bizarre night with Liza Minnelli.
Andrew still handsome as ever 🤩😍
Are we certain it wasn’t meant to be brat like bratwurst?
The song “St. Elmo’s Fire” was later changed for Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion tour. That’s why it has the line wheels, but the song ‘s originally written line is ‘a pair of wing’. Go back to the original song which was written by David Foster. We CANADIANS should know how that song was sung.
I will always love you❤
This fella is almost as high as Chris Farley
He's been sober for decades, genius.
How can you tell?
I don't remember anything about this guy. Oh well.
The only thing I remember him from was Mannequin, and had to look that up to be sure.
If anyone knows where I can watch the documentary for free let me know please. I know it probably won't be. Just putting it out there
What kind of idea?
I love Andrew McCarthy! If you were born in 1972, you grew up with Andrew & Molly & Jami (Gertz) & Robert (Downey Jr.) & James (Spader) & Charlie & Emilio & Ally & Sean (Penn) & Kevin (Bacon) & Judd & Michael (Anthony M. Hall) & Tom (Cruise) & Jon (Cryer) & Demi & Ione (Skye) & Jennifer (Connelly) &&&&&
Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, Michael J. Fox, Matthew Broderick, Matt Dillon, etc.
I think I have some context? Researchers and popular media often use the mid-1960s as its starting birth years and the late 1970s as its ending birth years, with the generation being generally defined as people born from 1965 to 1980?. Is this Colbertʻs kids generation? Surely its not mine or familiar.
Snapdragon Idea?
Ok- it seems Sammy Davis Jr.’s was the place to party…so many stories involve him.
demi was NOT in the brat pack lol
Yes she was. Also Anthony Michael Hall.
I really want to know why he completely left Mare Winningham out of his Brat Pack documentary. Not even one single mention of her.
Because she wasn't a brat packer.
tinny sound
Hollyweird
"...a pair of wheels"???
Only two wheels? Is he riding a skateboard?
Someone else in the comments here mentioned it was written about a wheelchair athlete.
@@JenHoegeman I'm so dumb. I forgot a skateboard has four wheels. Freaking embarrassing.
what? His views of the term changed? In the documentary he's still whining and crying about it. Almost fighting the author for not apologizing. lol What a crybaby. The crybaby pack.
