A word of warning... Lidl have reduced the strength of a number of these beers since this great comparison/review! In the past couple of weeks Perlenbacher Pils in the green glass bottles has had the abv reduced from 4.8% to 4.5% and rebranded 'Perlenbacher Pilsner' to match the cans. The price is still £1.49. It was not long ago that this lager was 99p a bottle, so a 50% increase and a lower quality product means I will no longer buy it. Also, in the past few weeks, Excelsior lager has gone down from 4% to 3.4%, price reduced slightly. I've done a taste test together and the new version is nowhere near as good. From reading the comments, there was a 3.7% version briefly, but I never saw that in my local. Galereux is now 4.6%, previously 4.8% - which happened a long time ago. I will not support breweries and supermarkets' products that do this. 😡
Mate you should go live after these reviews where u finish all them glasses and have a chat 😂🍻🎉
I reckon most of them end up down the sink... Some alcoholic in Wales would love access to Simon's drain with all those artificial pop beers that go down there
@@johnedwards3198 haha can you imagine😂. He did say he drinks the good ones
@@Kudu1987 which means the skunky ones or the apple crumble beers go down the sink. The local homeless or park bench drinkers would dine out on those scraps
Simon, when doing your recap at around 34 or 35 mins, you got the Excelsior and the Galereux mixed up. The Excelsior was in the Hop House 13 glass.
I've had French stubbies at lower than 4% I'm sure. Possibly even lower than 3% real table beer stuff. They're usually surprisingly decent. This one seems like an exception 😮
Lidl used to sell perlenbacher in brown bottle 6 packs. Is becks not a German beer? It comes in a green bottle.
I like the 'lager battle' type videos, interesting to see how they all compare. The only slight issue I have with some of Lidl/Aldi's beers is that the minimum pricing (I'm in Scotland) means they aren't that much cheaper than the 'real' beers. I do like the 'Belheather' lager we get here.
Tried the Perlenbacher today and it’s not bad but went flat as fart in 5 minutes The Italian lager was great! David
I miss the old Perlenbacher you have there. It's no longer sold over here. Do you remember Grafenwalder?
I think Aldi edge it on beer, and definitely on their own brand scotch which is extremely good for the £
If you go to Lidl and try source the queen Margot 8year old, black bottle, it slaughters any whiskey in Aldi.. it really is outstanding for its price point... Youl try hard to find a 20 quid whiskey anywhere near it's quality on earth.. I really mean it
Oh, Simon! You’ve missed one: the canned Perlenbacher. It would’ve been warranted, as, at 4.5 abv, it has a lower abv than the bottle. I’d imagine there’s a taste difference as a result. Great video, as always!
What????? I Have never noticed this. Always got cans because worried about light strike. Do you know if this is the same as Reinbacher in Aldi? Are the bottles stronger ABV?
I’ve known for a while about the abv difference, but hadn’t tried the can. It’s really awful, by the way.
And I think the can now says "brewed in France" it's a no for me
Great upload Simon, really enjoyed this one along with the Aldi version.
It's difficult to compare carbonation levels with different glasses.
I'd suggest getting yourself off to perhaps IKEA and using the same style glass for each style. Of beer.
Cheers mate.👍🍺
Galereux seems to be brewed in France by Brasserie Champigneulles, a subsidiary of the German TCB Beverages. By the way, there are a lot of German breweries that put their beer in green glass bottles (Beck's, Einbecker, and Jever just to mention a few).
It wasn't that long ago that the Perlenbacher was only 99p a bottle, and I loved the twist off cap as its saved me some hassle finding openers when I'm away from home, but now it's £1.49!. It may still be a good beer and value for money the 50% price increase leaves a nasty after taste.
I stopped buying it because of the price rise.
"musty old farts!" 🤣 well you put me off!!
Judging by the comments this might be controversial but I love the canned Pelenbacher for £3.30 for a 4 pack I don't think you can go wrong.
The Aldi version of them bottles of ten are only £3.69 .
Is there a minimum unit price for alcohol in Wales ? I think some of the prices are lower in England
Yes there is. There's a special formula to calculate it. If you Google: Wales minimum unit pricing for alcohol it gives all the details.
Brits are generally not known for brewing great larger, I think the Czechs are the true masters of larger. Brits are however, masters at brewing Ale, Bitter and Stouts, in other words proper beer.😊
About 5 years ago there was a brief period of around a year where the Perlenbacher was brewed in France 😆 they changed it back to Germany an put the price up from 89p to 99p per bottle. I haven't bought it in years but it sounds like it's tasting good albeit for about 30p a bottle more expensive
Saint Bertin from lidl is so good for the price especially, wish other supermarkets did them and not be all about money
Saint Bertin isn’t even £5, dunno how you called that £5 but okay, £3.79
Becks uses green bottles.
Perlenbacher here in germany is in brown plastic bottles or cans. It's IMHO the worst of the supermarket own brand beers that is available here (not because of the plastic bottles, there is realy good beer in plastic bottels available here). The german Perlenbacher is brewed by Frankfurter Brauhaus. I've read somewhere that the Perlenbacher that is sold in the UK is brewed in france, so I'm curios if it's tasting better than what is sold here.
Its crap here...Lidl could do a lot better...they are a German supermarket! You would think they would sell at least one half decent German beer in the UK.
I had the perlenbacher tonight for the first time and absolutely loved it.
We always keep the saint bertin in the fridge as it is a good alrounder and all my grown up kids don't mind it and the price is just great
Simon, if you are in a regular pub with the usual lager suspects on draught what would be your standard choices?
lidl also has a san miguel copy up where I live, San Martinez , sure its 5% abv
Been close to home bargains my Thursday beer at 28 is budvar dark. 3 bottles about £5,50ish. Kids in bed and my partner haha watching abit of only fools. Can't go wrong 👍
Lidl have rebranded the excelsior to galahad, cans look the same but abv dropped to 3.4%, Carlsberg dropped Abv to 3.4% as well, time for another review? How many others have dropped their Abv?
Becks is only brewed in Bremen and has always shipped in green bottles as is Jever bier.
Oh and Licher Pils is in green bottles too
May be not relevant for this but he did cuss out Peroni. I think Peroni makes perfect sense when it's blistering hot and Peroni is very cold. I would never drink it in winter or in a pub. Cold one on the beach though makes perfect sense.
Perlenbacher is around 35p for 500ml In Germany!
Hi Si, Perlenbacher is available in a can. If you are worried about the skunkiness, then why would you not opt for cans?
They changes the packaing of thw cans this year, and I think they changed the beer. I used to LOVE the cans
It's not the same beer. Perlenbacher is in cans, and Perlenbacher Premium is in bottles.
Was in Majorca last week. Perlenbacher from Lidl Port de Pollensa 4.8% worked out at 45p a pint.
Regarding that skunky Italian beer, it dosnt have to be the entire batch thats bad. Every green bottle that sits in a shelf exposed to light will get skunky sooner or later. If u want a green bottled beer, make sure to pick one ( or more) from a unopened 24p box, and try to store it dark till u drink it.
Do you think when doing these taste tests to look at the Best Before Dates - particularly on the bottles (I'm always wary about dates). Great video. Well presented.
Looks like the German Perlenbacher beer is based on Becks, which to my knowledge has always been in a green bottle? And apparently is the biggest selling beer in the world so no wonder Lidl copy the bottle colour!
Man, this is a great channel.
Perlenbacher may be targeting fans of German beer brands like Beck's and Jever, as they also come in green bottles.
Perlenbacher comes in plastic bottles at my local Lidl in Berlin. :D
Is Becks not a German beer in green bottles? Love the channel by the way!
Bought and downed the 20 minute old fart beer last night. Ice cold, hit the spot. £3.99 here in Yorkshire.
It’s way more likely that your perception has changed rather than the beers. Things taste different to us on different days, time of day, what you just drank or ate before etc.
Great video Simon the excelsior i think is a good drink for the price i would drink cans of it when i first started going to lidl the perlenbacher is great to but as you say i think this should be in a brown bottle, to me it’s just copping the Heineken bottle.
I’m loving those little french premium lagers only £3.96 for 10 bottles not sure why they cost you £5 don’t make the mistake of getting the £1.99 ones they are terrible and only 2%
Enjoyable watching this episode , looking forward to the next one.
I too like comparing the smell of a beer to a musty old fart, lol. Don't change Simon, don't change.
The comment about German larger on green bottles...what about Becks?
What's happened to Excelsior? 3.7% in my Lidl. This must of happened recently? 440ml cans also. To be fair, it was ok. But I've heard great things about San Martinez at 5%abv from Lidl. I'm on a real budget now so looking for the best value. What do you guys think is best worth getting in a 4 pack?
Probably tracking the trends of Fosters as that is the beer they're trying copy and Fosters is now 3.7% apparently (I hadn't realised until Simon's review of it a few months ago)
I concur on Lidl's Birra Bionda. Excellent value. I'll sometimes pop into Lidl to pick up a few bottles. Better than Moretti IMHO. Perlenbacher is ok, but I reckon Aldi's Rheinbacher is a tad nicer.
We don´t get different brands here in Lidl Sweden, only Perlenbacher in 50cl Cans and 50cl Green Bottles!
i buy the cans. A good brew with a good meal or just sitting in the garden enjoying life thinking:
"SHOULD I MOW THE LAWN..OR...POP ANOTHER BREWSKY🍺?"
God Is Great - Beer Is Good - People Are Crazy😁!
Why was the Lidl Martinez lager reviewed? Was it not available at that time?
Loving this channel dude! Top stuff
These beers are a great base to Picon- a fab orange peel liquor designed to add body to cheap lager. Try it next time you make a trip to France
Hi, Simon. Great review. Love the Birra Bionde. Get through gallons of it. But favourite is the Luminous Nights, which seems, touch wood, a standard fixture, these days. Appreciate not an own brand but 2 quid for 7.4% juicy as you like DIPA, you literally cannot go wrong
Thanks & well done Sir.
Regards sent from Western Scotland 🔴⚪🔵
The fart in a duvet comment lol
Ah dude you got the excelsior mixed up with the galereux
Excelsior is one of the better session lagers out there. Close to a German Helles in terms of mouth feel, malt taste and lack of bitterness. Comes with a quaffable 4% strength. At least it WAS. They just pulled it from the shelves and introduced a new 3.7% version! 😑
If only there were 100s of breweries all over the UK you could buy from Directly online and get lots of beers sent to your home in the next days, then you wouldn't have to resort to this type of slightly bizzarre supermarket mega purchase... OH WAIT...
I go to Lidl just to buy the Kakawa chocolate stout.
What about hathwrwood bitter ?
This was a lager battle, I might do bitters in the future
Where is the Desperados Clone?🤣🤣🤣
Perlanbacher designed to look like Becks?
I don’t taste skunkiness is just about every bottle of beer like
You do.
you missed the best the spanish Martinez
Perlenbacher was in brown bottles years ago...it was sold in 6 packs....4.8% i think...was much better beer...had the green bottle version recently and it was vile!....won't be buyin it again...utter crap
nice vid
I have come to the conclusion they all taste the same. Simon failed Galereux and Excelsior in another video. Here he says they are ok
Class 😂
Why you Lidl!
Steinhsuser is in green bottles
Was going to comment the same... The beer Simon constantly raves about as being the best supermarket beer ever
