I'm not actually a game developer, but it seems that there is also a huge amount of hard work in this sphere. And in the same time it encourages me to look forward in this way.
+Kevin Truong so did you get your degree in CS? I'm currently majoring in computer information systems CIS, and I am interested in becoming a video game developer.
+Kevin Truong if I study a diploma for graphic design do you reckon I could get into the gaming developer or gaming business or would I have to study more even with my diploma
+Mitchell Berndt I would highly recommend you do a computer science of a software oriented course rather than a graphical design. You do need graphical knowledge but I think it is more important if you have a coding experience.
Aww, when he answered the piracy question I felt bad about pirating games as a child. but then again I never had money to spend we always had a budget life so much so that I wouldn't dare to ask family for money/items. Putting on a pretend smile and saying I'm okay and turning from stuff you would like but putting your family's positions first is hard for a kid. However piracy is wrong. I do not pirate any games now, hoping I can talk other people into actually buying and purchasing a game.
I still do sometimes, but it's to see if the game will even work on my machine. once I see that it does I buy it. plenty of games I own now I had before through the good ol bay. if these publishers would put out demo like they used to I think a lot of it would mellow out a bit. then there are those who will never buy something they can get for free. those are the guys and gals I don't care for.
Yeah I totally understand that. Almost all of the piracy I've done in my life was when I was a kid and didn't have any money to pay for stuff. Now I actually have the cash to pay for games and its so much easier and safer than trying to torrent some virus ridden crap.
i've pirated a few things in the past but I have tried to make a resolve to not pirate anymore, I come from a budget family also and I can't wait until I get a job so I can rightfully obtain games
If you were going to buy it then it's bad if you weren't then I don't see it as a big deal, because the creator would not have made any money anyways and you would not have played it. It also could change your opinion and motivate you to buy it to benefit the creator.
Dusean17 I used to do this as well but I noticed I always liked the things I bought but quickly got bored of the things I pirated. Like you guys I was also a kid when I did this.
I love his advice, but unfortunately I feel like game development can be so overwhelming when you're first getting started. There is so much to learn and understand.
im currently in school for game art id love to be able to get in the industry and do alot of storyboarding for or game art/ character background developement.
this video has been here a while so im kinda doubting you will be checking for the comments at least any time soon but i have wanted to become a game developer for as long as i have been a live simply because i grew up with games and seen how they have grown with me i loved your video and i kinda wish it was not unknown but i do kinda have a point to my ramblings i would like to know what schooling to look for and what really got you started im at the point ware i need to make a start or give up my dreams, so i wanted to ask if you could point me in the right direction to get started?
A game developer can have many roles including arts, computer science, and information technology itself. The video shows a computer science degree game developer as he is coding the game. His partner creates the visuals and also helps out in the game coding. But I think if you wanted to get started a computer science degree would be a great place to start
+kuyo blackstone Schools wont help much, Unless you want to work abroad then you're going to need a certificate to get a work visa. What you should learn is 3D math, A lot of 3D math. And choose a good language to learn, Like C++/C# or Java. Those are good. Then learn to use one of the available graphics API's, Such as OpenGL or DirectX. And then you will be golden. And one advice is DON'T EVER use a pre built engine. All commercially available engines are made for designers, So you won't learn that much from using them.
The first thing that I find important is, you need to make time for learning and surrounding yourself with your new hobby/craft. Surround your home environment, your computer, anything and everything with what you want to learn or become. This will change over the course of your programming. Understanding the cores about a computer will help you understand their functionality. You don't necessarily have to learn about the in's and out's of a computer's "hardware", just know they are there and how they work. After that, learning a language is a good start. Suggestions now days would be C# or Java, since most high level languages are used to develop software. Attempting to do program a game in Assembly "Machine Language" or C are going to slow down your progress to creating your first game. It's great to have a understanding of these languages and how they work mind you, but they very very difficult to write larger programs in. Unless you are very fluent in them, more power to you. I'd suggest not starting with Unity or Unreal Engine. Because, even though they have very powerful tools for creating games, they do not help you understand how to "talk" to a computer, nor will they teach you anything about how physics works, how to draw a sprite, or how to create tile maps. Someone already has developed the code for you to use in Unity etc. But how will know how it works if you don't write it yourself? I'll give you an example.. kind of.. most people know Markus Persson "Notch" video game developer of Minecraft. In one of his coding videos, he creates a "Raycaster", a project that renders a 3D world based on a 2D map. All from his brain. It's a very very difficult thing to create without looking at Google or another source. Not saying you need to attempt this, but knowing how something works is very helpful instead of just using someone elses work and hoping for the best. You'll find that copy and pasting from Google and Forums doesn't help achieve your coding goals. Lastly, Have fun! Take a Break if you get stuck, try something new with code, learn how to draw a character. Good Luck.
So what position is in videogame development do you need to be in to make a videogame go from idea to reality? I know there is a lot of different parts connected to it but I'm trying to figure out what is the best position that would be right for me. So is the CEO decide what type of game is being built? I'm more of a visionary creative type person but want to start making video games just trying to figure out the right field to get into.
StawHat Baka Well C or C++ are best if you're looking to get maximum performance, but many others like Java, c#, python and others work well and are good for beginners. As for how to excel, I have two words: Self Study! Pick a language(or several) and code every day if you can. It's a big struggle at first, but gets a lot easier over time.
As a person trying to become a computer science game developer, I have come across one problem; I am not an artistic person. I have creative ideas, analytical thinking, and determination, but I struggle when it comes to actual art. Will this drag me down? Also, how do I begin learning algorithms?
For anyone thinking of taking CSE in college...its no joke. Its up there in difficulty as a doctor. Most freshmen will start off taking 12-15 credits per semester, BUT CSE students are expected to take 18 credits. Well in my school that was the norm and classes weren't easy gen eds like other majors but advanced math courses from the get go. In other words prepare for sleep deprivation
dank jr yeah that would suck. Im guessing you didnt work a job at that time with that many hours per week of classes. I found it hard enough to do 18 credits and still find time to eat, shower, and study.
I like Math, but What role exactly does it play?? And when you're working for a company, when is a good time to start your own games? And is there any level of games you have to make? Like, do you have to decide between PC, DS, Apps, xbox360, etc., or can you make them all?
1. Math tends to be most prominent with the physics side of things. Although, the more math you know the better for algorithms and such. Like seriously, math is awesome in game design and it can cut out so much code. 2. Spare time? 3. Just make any game you want. It's more about the game mechanics and the skill that went into crafting the game. In the video the game designer uses "Unity" which is a game engine that can put your game onto various platforms (android, ios etc) so I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Udemy has some great courses for under €50 that are really good to get you started, but I would suggest saving €300 that you can use for buying small licenses and more courses, you'll want a few and some good books too.

I am a civil engineer in India. I am crazy about games. And want to get in the field. Developing, Testing anything! Is there any need of a civil engineer? Please help.
And afters years of hard work you haven't even been able to buy a reasonable desk and still sitting on a creaky chair.....omg...think of your health...
MKRfootball2010 well . i'm in the Middle east and here they are careless about developing , structure specially with games development . so i would ask about the courses in college if they make that bug different or should i change to CS ?.
thank you guys but i think you got it wrong . software eng have nothing with Hardware at least that where i studying now . computer eng is another story
If the indie game developers are working on the projects for so long, why arent the graphics like every day games such as Mirrors edge, COD, Skyrim, or left for dead???
Simple answer. Money, people, skills and creativity. Also, graphics hardly matter if the game itself is engaging to the player. Examples: -Shovel Knight -Star Bound -The Binding of Isaac -FTL: Faster than Light -Terraria -(Trigger warning) Undertale -Turmoil -Rimworld -Spelunky Should I go on?
***** Right now I'm looking for something to study that will get me a career into game designing or I will study something unrelated and become indie game designer. I'm from Canada btw.
i want to make my own video game too .i just dont have software, knowledge or skill to make one. in the same time ,i cannot use others already existing software to make it otherwise i cannot register to copyright agency as my intellectual property(protect by law)
Well i don't know if anyone can see this but a huge question to all of those out there that know about game development: How do i get started? I'm 14 years old and live in switzerland, my dream is to become a game developer all this time because videogames r ma' life !!! :D I just wanna know where to start! In one year we need to know in school what we want to become and then study for that! I would really want to know witch programms you should use !!!!!! The guy in the video said he uses Unity, but where do I annimate the characters? how do i place them in the game? 2D and 3D annimations and all of that stuff !!! If someone sees this in 2015 they would know i'm a fan of yandere-dev (Yandere Simulator)!!!! he is developing this amazing game on his own and that is so amazing and inspireing to me! He says: he wrights codes for the game, what does that really mean? Is it just really wrighting codes or does it have an other meaning? See this is what confuses me. Where da F do I get started? I've alredy have sosooosososoososososoososoos many Ideeas for games but how do I ACTULLY DEVELOPE A GAME ?????? DAAAA BIG QUESTIONNNN !!!!!!!! please don't jude on my spelling -.-" i've gotten really bad since i moved from Nz to here !!!
+Michelle fässler no offence but u r 14 take your time and think if u want to be a programmer or game designer im telling from experience its a pretty cold business your creativity and ideas aint gonna make u any money...
+Michelle fässler know what type of game you want to develop and start from there. I have just started looking into this (so kinda in the same boat) but alwredy know what type of game I want to make. Still working on the concept for a 3D 3rd and 1st person RPG. It's going to be fast pace action and based around magick. Do you know what you want your game to be, the type of game , caricatures , audio? If not then plan it out. Think of where it will take place , what you can and can't interact with and so on. One of the biggest parts of making a game (btw I didn't get the impression of here) is planning the game
+Remelle Newell Newell just dont aim high as a new designer u might not have enough resources to make a skyrim type game my suggestion is to rip off another games engine
Dude if banks can get bailouts so can gaming companies. Like relying on simple consumerism is way too capitalistic. People cant buy that many games.....
Depends if it's successful or not. You could even loose money by the electric you use to create and then you don't get much sells and that's devastating.
+Sriram Shankar Same here. Two months away from being 16! Anywho, take this study.com/articles/Game_Designer_Job_Info_and_Requirements_for_Becoming_a_Game_Designer.html It seems to have what your looking for! I hope to play one of the games you make in the future.
+Sriram Shankar Studying games programming at Uni. Trust me, do computer science, then specialise in software engineering, and then learn game engines inside out, and fucking networking. Dude, trust me, it's fucked up
I went to college but tbh the majority of my learning was self taught. There's a steep learning curve initially to programming which throws people off but eventually it becomes a tonne easier.
here's the most important question of them all, are you washed in the blood of the Lamb? i ask this because you know that all of this video game making is temporary, right? but what happens after death.... it will be either good or bad. but they will not be eternal. hell or heaven. that's right they will not be eternal if you are not saved by the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord, then you'll go to hell. you will be there until the end of the age of grace (which time we're in now) then you'll stay there for the time of Jacob's trouble (7 years) then there's the millennial reign of Christ that you have to stay there for. after that THEN you get out of hell only to be taken to the great white throne judgment only to be found guilty as a sinner who rejected the free gift of eternal life (God himself offered in the person of Jesus Christ) then after all of that is settled, it's off to the lake of fire. people say that you'll be in hell forever, not true as i already stated. the lake of fire however, IS eternal. hell and the lake of fire are different but if you're washed in the blood of the Lamb, get Jesus Christ famous in the world. preach the gospel.
How big is this lake? how deep is it? Is something in the lake burning or is the fire just materializing from nothing? Is there oxygen for the fire to use? if so is there an atmosphere above the lake? What would the weather be like? Can we still move around in the lake? What's the gravity like?
Eddy Berryman Can we talk to others in the lake? Can we see others at all? Do we get to keep our memories of living when we go to the lake? If not, how could we know we were suffering if we have no memory or reference of what it's like to not suffer? Would we even have bodies? No point in burning if there's nothing to burn in the first place.
XceptAManBbornAgain NoKingdomOfGod this is not the right place for this comment just saying and yes i am catholic just saying if your going to post something like this post it on a religious video ñot game desgin industry because people will only make fun of you for your faith i wont say anything to discourage you i help at my church but either way people can balance their dreams and religion, just chill out bro, maybe he is religious and a game desginer at the same time.
Great advice - "Hard work, take it to the bank".
Its been really nice to watch a video with a developer who works in humble surrounds with a positive attitude. Thank you :-)
I'm not actually a game developer, but it seems that there is also a huge amount of hard work in this sphere. And in the same time it encourages me to look forward in this way.

Are there any websites i can visit or some software I can use to help me practice and lean hoe to make video games?
I recommend Scratch, Unity or Gamemaker.
Udemy has some great courses for under €50 that are really good to get you started, but I would suggest saving €300 that you can use for buying small licenses and more courses, you'll want a few and some good books too.
looks like I might have what it takes... (I spend way too much of my time making games, to the point where I have bad grades and serious sleep issues)
you are nice.
Could anyone tell me what does he say at 9:46? I'm not native English and I don't understand him, he spoke so fast there :(

TurtleSoupGaming No, I mean, from there to the "take it to the bank"

"But, uh, you do that, and you're well on the way. Once you got that work ethic, man, the world is your oyster; you can do anything. That's good advice for everybody, actually. Take it to the bank!"
Whoa, thank you! :)
I am a civil engineer in India. I am crazy about games. And want to get in the field. Developing, Testing anything! Is there any need of a civil engineer? Please help.

I wonder how much of a cut Steam takes from each game sale.
Pulse 30%
Wow, that's pretty fcking greedy.
I want to be game developer and I studying software engineering is that the good choice or CS?
Usaualy a cs will offer a game developing route.
MKRfootball2010 well . i'm in the Middle east and here they are careless about developing , structure specially with games development . so i would ask about the courses in college if they make that bug different or should i change to CS ?.
I Recommend Computer Science NOT COMPUTER ENGINEERING COMPUTER SCIENCE IS MOSTLY SOFTWARE BUT COMPUTER ENGINEERING IS WORKING ON HARDWARE MOSTLY
thank you guys but i think you got it wrong . software eng have nothing with Hardware at least that where i studying now . computer eng is another story
Oh Sorry I meant to say it's only but I said "MOSTLY"
i am a game developer too!!
If the indie game developers are working on the projects for so long, why arent the graphics like every day games such as Mirrors edge, COD, Skyrim, or left for dead???
Because Indie game projects are made with a significantly smaller team. All the games you mentioned were made with teams of hundreds of people.
Simple answer. Money, people, skills and creativity.
Also, graphics hardly matter if the game itself is engaging to the player.
Examples:
-Shovel Knight
-Star Bound
-The Binding of Isaac
-FTL: Faster than Light
-Terraria
-(Trigger warning) Undertale
-Turmoil
-Rimworld
-Spelunky
Should I go on?
Thanks for the Insight
So to be a game designer I need a degree in computer science?
you need skills and knowledge
anuj d
That's a bit vague.
False as you only need a computer and a good ambient techno song playlist

+Neel Mehta yeah i know xD
+Michelle fässler know what type of game you want to develop and start from there. I have just started looking into this (so kinda in the same boat) but alwredy know what type of game I want to make. Still working on the concept for a 3D 3rd and 1st person RPG. It's going to be fast pace action and based around magick.
Do you know what you want your game to be, the type of game , caricatures , audio?
If not then plan it out. Think of where it will take place , what you can and can't interact with and so on.
One of the biggest parts of making a game (btw I didn't get the impression of here) is planning the game
+Remelle Newell Newell just dont aim high as a new designer u might not have enough resources to make a skyrim type game
my suggestion is to rip off another games engine
Download "game maker studio" it's a good engine wich is both powerful and easy to use. There are lots of tutorials on youtube
He looks likes Dan Hardy from UFC
Dude if banks can get bailouts so can gaming companies. Like relying on simple consumerism is way too capitalistic. People cant buy that many games.....
starring: manly chest hair!
how much money does a game developer earn ?
Depends if it's successful or not. You could even loose money by the electric you use to create and then you don't get much sells and that's devastating.
Not very much.
A
Marc Merill would like to have a word with you.

I'm looking for a team of game developers so they can help me with my idea. Do you know where I can find one?
Can any body tell "video game designer field requirements education..?(FOR Ea,CAPCOM, Ubisoft...)"Iam an 15 year old and i want to decide my future..!
+Sriram Shankar Same here. Two months away from being 16! Anywho, take this study.com/articles/Game_Designer_Job_Info_and_Requirements_for_Becoming_a_Game_Designer.html It seems to have what your looking for! I hope to play one of the games you make in the future.
+Sriram Shankar get a computer science degree, no one is gonna say no once you have a university degree.
same here , i'm 16yo studying IT in high school ni i'm gonna study computer science in university
:)
+Sriram Shankar Studying games programming at Uni. Trust me, do computer science, then specialise in software engineering, and then learn game engines inside out, and fucking networking. Dude, trust me, it's fucked up
I want to this game developer that why I am going back to school
don't you need to go to college to be a game programer
I went to college but tbh the majority of my learning was self taught. There's a steep learning curve initially to programming which throws people off but eventually it becomes a tonne easier.
Hot!
nice. a slavery joke @5:00
Don't become a game developer unless you want to be below the national average.
Melon Oh yea? What's the national average?
you do not look like Vietnamese
Neither do you
clickbait
here's the most important question of them all, are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
i ask this because you know that all of this video game making is temporary, right? but what happens after death.... it will be either good or bad. but they will not be eternal.
hell or heaven. that's right they will not be eternal
if you are not saved by the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord, then you'll go to hell. you will be there until the end of the age of grace (which time we're in now) then you'll stay there for the time of Jacob's trouble (7 years) then there's the millennial reign of Christ that you have to stay there for.
after that THEN you get out of hell only to be taken to the great white throne judgment only to be found guilty as a sinner who rejected the free gift of eternal life (God himself offered in the person of Jesus Christ)
then after all of that is settled, it's off to the lake of fire. people say that you'll be in hell forever, not true as i already stated. the lake of fire however, IS eternal. hell and the lake of fire are different
but if you're washed in the blood of the Lamb, get Jesus Christ famous in the world. preach the gospel.
XceptAManBbornAgain NoKingdomOfGod this is not the right place for this comment just saying and yes i am catholic just saying if your going to post something like this post it on a religious video ñot game desgin industry because people will only make fun of you for your faith i wont say anything to discourage you i help at my church but either way people can balance their dreams and religion, just chill out bro, maybe he is religious and a game desginer at the same time.
u stupid
