  • Double Alpine Butterfly Loop Quick Tie Version
    The Double Alpine Butterfly Loop can be used in the bight of a rope to where more than one loop is beneficial. Equipment can be secured to each individual loop or both loops at once for additional security.
    Another advantage of having a double loop, is that if the rope is being made up into some form of pulley system, the two loops can be used to give a mechanical advantage.
    🎬 Single Alpine Butterfly Loop: • Alpine Butterfly Loop ...
    Also Known as Alpine Butterfly Loop Revisited Quick Tie Version - Alpine Loop Lineman's Rider Lineman's Loop Knot
    Geoffry Budworth: This is a European mountaineering classic middleman's tie on.
    The Alpine Butterfly Loop is one of the best loop knots that is tied in the bight of a rope. The loop is particularly strong and will hold from any point from where it is being pulled.
    Due to the symmetry of the Alpine knot, it is easy to inspect for security.
    This knot was originally used by Linemen and especially telephone engineers. "It is absolutely secure and will hold from any point from which it is drawn." (Burger).

    If you make the last wrap on the left of wraps 2 & 3, you can then just move wraps 2&3 right to left over the left wrap, and then left to right under the left wrap. Easy to visualize and easier to understand, especially for beginners. And very easy in the dark

    I just got back from visiting my 14 yr old Grandson, who I call my little engineer since he has an engineer's mind, and I was showing him my (late in life) dive into the art of knot tying. I had not seen your video on the double alpine butterfly loop until I got back home.
    I showed him the single loop and on his own he said why not tie two loops? Next thing I know he's doing three, four, and then 5 butterfly loops, before he ran out of rope! It's all the same process, you just wind around your hand and then pull over and under the number of loops you want.
    Yesterday I made my own triple butterfly loop to hang some tools in my garage.
    Very useful variations!
    Thanks Johnny. You're by far my favorite knot instructor on UA-cam!

    That's an interesting knot I've never seen. Perhaps it is rare (for someone into climbing knots) because lack of redundancy, if you connect to the loops and one fails, it seems the other one could easily roll and get loose under heavy load. I can see a lot of use for general use of this knot when life does not depend on redundancy. Bookmarked definately.
    Generally double loop knots are great for stuff like climbing anchors (due to redundancy). My geometrical logic says not to trust on this one. No pull tests done by me though nor any other facts. If I'm wrong on the hunch, I'll gladly hear that!

    Cool! so much easier than the traditional method. This is a great option to produce a secure double-loop in the middle of a line. Much better than the bowline on a bight, whose reliability seems to be somewhat unpredictable.

    • @danielhooke6115
      @danielhooke6115 3 роки тому

      Tying this loop in polypropylene rope shows the double loop to be insecure; the double loop can slip and become a single loop.

    Very nice. I have always liked the method you used around the hand to tie the single version but never thought of an extra turn to get the double. I always used the twist method for the double but like your method as well.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 років тому +1

      I was just thinking about what you said about the twist method. Even though I did a video on it, right now, I can not remember how to do the twisted method. I suppose when you learn a better way, the mind sometimes ditches the old way. Bit like the bottle sling knot, I can only now do it via the Bowline method. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

    • @YManCyberDude
      @YManCyberDude 6 років тому

      That's true. For me the twist method is probably my fav because it helps me visualize how the knot is actually put together. And I think I got the bottle sling knot to work once but have forgotten it. It's a booger.
      Anyway here are some Twist Method links I saved for the the Alpine Butterfly Knot …
      - NetKnots.com/rope_knots/butterfly-knot
      - ScoutPioneering.com/videos/pioneering-knots/butterfly-knot
      And another version …
      - UA-cam.com/watch?v=_hTH-Luv7VY&start_at
      There's another version I like that's kinda like that last link but you lay it over your wrist & use the twist method to throw one twist over the thumb & the second over the index finger then you touch the tips of those fingers together to assist in finishing the knot but I don't have that video any more. But it makes an easy way to dispense as large a final loop as wanted as well.

    • @YManCyberDude
      @YManCyberDude 6 років тому

      Ha ! Found that video as UA-cam had it in the referrals after I rewatched the last one I posted in my last comment.
      Here it is. That other method starts at about 2:40 … UA-cam.com/watch?v=72_xyeN8pnM

    Hey Johnny D,
    If you use the Hybrid Method to tie the Double ABK you need only 3 strands across the palm instead of your 4. And you don't have to think about which 2 strands to grab. Just grab the bottom of the 2 loops and pull.

    • @KnottingKnots
