Lord have mercy! I've never seen this before. For those of you who may not know, ALL of these guys are Olympic dieties of American "roots" music. None of them are limited to any one style, they transcend styles, they, collectively, have made styles over the past 50 years. Too many highlights to mention, but Flux (Jerry Douglas) bending behind the slide at 3:30 just killed me. Tony and Chet . . . It's Tony and Chet! I'm without speech!
Well, heck. Everybody sounds real good-then Mark O’Connor totally lights it up-perfect time, intonation, harmonic continuity, ideas, everything. He’s one of the best improvisers I’ve ever heard. Charlie Parker woulda loved this guy. Thanks for posting this!
No one seen fit to comment yet so let me be the first. Musicians like these make me elated and sad at the same time. Elated cos wthe music they are producing is beyond words and for me makes me feel lifted above my mundane day to day existence. Sad cos as a musician myself it makes me realise that being able to play like them is beyond me no matter how hard I practice. Thanks for posting this it blew me away and I don't even like bluegrass :-)
Wow, thanks for posting this. Great to see this was filmed by someone who was interested in their fingers. What a treat! Isn't Grisman on fire, and Rice so cool. Mark O'Connor virtuosic as ever, and Mr Guitar showing a few tricks. And Bela, Jerry and Rob. This is the band that the Bluegrass Brothers should have to compete with.
Thanks. You always have the best of b;iegrass and for that matter anykind of music. I am going to see Bela next month at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Wow this was so great. Now if I could just get Jerry Couglas up here.
Yes, this was January 1985. The 1986 show was taped on the day of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and Ralph Emery comes out at the beginning of the show and talks about it.
i agree, that bending behind the slide just hits the spot :-D I've also never seen this before, and i must say this is some excellent blending of bluegrass and bebop(or something like that). They're viruosi but they like playing together, nice to see.
From left to right, they are David Grisman, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Chet Atkins, Bela Fleck, & Jerry Douglas. Rob Wasserman is the bass player in the back on the left.
Based on Chets facial expressions at O'Connors playing one of two things chet is thinking: 1) that's some mighty fine fiddle playing 2) dont make me a tough act to follow
Thanks for your reply. Rob Wasserman is obviously a great musician. In fact, my point is that perhaps he's a bit too good. The bass seems too ambitious for this simple song. About reading up on him, I prefer listening to music with my ears and feel what it does to rest of my body. Reading something about the man won't suddenly change that. I'm glad you enjoy this song. Personally I prefer the sound and drive of the Quintette Du Hot Club De France version. I'm confident these musicians do too.
OK, I'm glad you enjoy this version. Speaking strictly for me, If I were to play bass here, I'd not be walking all over the place but keep a simple pulsing groove going, like in the first couple bars of this version, and the Hot Club Du France recording. Walking is fun but without a drummer it's more like wanking :)
Playing the bass is like driving a bus-just let everyone else take the ride. I've been a bass player for 40 years and the bass controls the tempo, unfortunately for some people that just is not enough. Bass solos are like watching hippos dance Swan Lake-It's impressive but it ain't pretty. Busy bass players destroy the groove.
Darn, my dog was trying steal papers from behind my desk and, in trying to push Pause, I think I accidentally gave this video a "1 star" rating. :( Of course I would have gladly given it a 5...
these guitarists and mandoling and banjo players are all waiting for their turn to perform their imitation of Django Reinhardt but no-one is taking care of the drive. We need la pompe to make this baby work. Or a drummer.
this version seriously needs a drummer or a bass+two rhytm guitars section like in the Hot Club of Paris version. There's no drive. This bass player is good, but he doesn't gets his role. We don't need melody, not without a drummer to give a foundation.

that line up is unreal. the talent on that stage is so deep
Well, heck. Everybody sounds real good-then Mark O’Connor totally lights it up-perfect time, intonation, harmonic continuity, ideas, everything. He’s one of the best improvisers I’ve ever heard. Charlie Parker woulda loved this guy. Thanks for posting this!
Yes... this is THE VERSION... thanks for uploading. Took me a few clicks to find it (thanks, youtube algorithm)
Tony Rice is the Cleanest and most fluid guitar player alive and back then!!!

That is some of the best dobro work I have ever seen.

Wow, what a line up, would love to see the whole set.

all were excellent

Agreed - that pretty much says it all. Thanks!
So much talent they should have made some albums i would have bought them all
AMAZING!!!

Tony Rice rules!
Man. you talk about a hall of fame lineup it doesn't get much better than this.
Why this fades out just as Rob Wasserman gets his solo is weird... but other than that - very cool to see this!

Maaaaaaravilhosoooooo!!!!!!!!!
He is infact the best ever! go flux!
it cut off too soon

Tommy Emmanuel, Frank Vignola, and others did a fantastic version of this song, you should check it out

I think Bela snatched Mark's jacket right before curtain. Sucks that they chopped Wasserman's solo. Ah, the life of a bass player...
CAN YOU IMAGINE MRS. MILLS PLAYING PIANO, DJANGO JOINING IN WITH THESE EXPERTS ?

Why cut off the bass player? That's sad!
yeah Mark O'Connor is an excellent violinist, but i like Chet's the most. Just my personal opinion.
Chet had the best solo in my opinion,I like that tasty lick at the begining of it.
+Godhand Godhand NO WAY...was definitely Mark O'Conner
Check out 3:27-3:30 try that lick out! hard as hell to nail down in a fast song like that!
Just had a listen to a Django recording of this. No drums
Fade out on the bass solo...TNN is like “yeah whatever, we just heard Grisman, Rice, Chet, Bela and Jerry Douglas, eff off...”
Right, my thoughts exactly.
Wow, what a talented bunch of guys! I'm only sorry the quality of the video is so poor, and that the video ends before the song does.
allstar cast
Almost as good as Django's. And just great because of the professionalism.
Any idea what year this was?
Mark o'connor looks like a pimp i love it!
Finally someone gives the bass player prooooops....ohhhhh.....oh no.
Darn, my dog was trying steal papers from behind my desk and, in trying to push Pause, I think I accidentally gave this video a "1 star" rating. :( Of course I would have gladly given it a 5...
could have a least ended it
These guys are playing a bluegrass version of this - you're not going to get a drummer. I disagree - there's loads of drive.
these guitarists and mandoling and banjo players are all waiting for their turn to perform their imitation of Django Reinhardt but no-one is taking care of the drive. We need la pompe to make this baby work. Or a drummer.
just dont like much the guy on the bass

check out George W. Bush on the guitar!
