Not even top 100 . Half of Willie Nelson’s songs are better . Hank Jr. has 5 better than this and God knows Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard have a dozen better. Kenny Rogers , etc , It’s a decent song . I like the chorus but no way is it the best . It’s more folk sounding anyway to me
@@ryansilver5497 Well, musical taste is subjective so you're entitled to your opinion, even if it's wrong 😉 I don't do 'best' but to say it isn't even top 100 is way off. It would seem that Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmy Lou Harris, Steve Earle, Trey Hensley and even Bob Dylan might disagree with you given their covers of the song. It might not have a 'classic' country sound but Van Zandt's lyrics are pure country. His use of cadence and rhyme on this song is an example of simple, sublime genius. You can play this song in a rowdy bar and by the end of the first line you can hear a pin drop. One of the all time greats.
You are so right about this song. Heard it totally by accident and was so hooked on the story within it and the brilliant tune. It is a heartbreaker and yet tough at the same time. The first time I have come across Townes van Zandt. As you rightly say, its legendary - see how many cover versions there are! but nothing really touches his own. The mariarchi style chorus backing ..well what need I say. I am a lifetime crap guitarist but this I swear to perfect this thanks to your wonderful tutorial. Many, many Thanks
Great instruction. Thanks. Townes Van Zandt’s “If I needed you” is also an amazing song. Sunday Morning Coming Down by Kris Kristofferson is up there as well.
This is definitely up there with the all-time best. I put Mr. Bojangles up there. But it's a waltz so maybe it's a different category🤔Thanks for the lesson!
Don’t know if it’s the best country song for me, but I’ve always enjoyed hearing the song and I’m not really a country fan. Neil Young and Dan Fogelberg country-inspired songs are some favorites of mine. I still say that Dan Fogelberg’s debut album-Home Free-is one of the best first albums for any artist. A strong country feel throughout and one of my all-time favorites. Thanks for this lesson James.
If you care about the story, listen to Townes and get the lyrics right: the Federales did NOT let Pancho “slip away “. Don’t fall into a lazy rhyme - it changes the story.
Well this is crazy! I just learned this tonight! But fingerpicking and by Townes. A better rendition I must say! At least for how my heart interprets it. But all the same… kind of fun that this just came up on my feed ❤️
I believe this is the best country song ever recorded. If you don't agree with me, let me know what you think can compete with this legendary tune!
Dust in the wind or The Dance

Hi are there chord sheets anywhere? Or do I need to get my pencil out.

Thank you so much for doing this - Emmylou Harris' version of this is one of my all time favourite pieces of Americana / Country.
I'm so lonesome I could cry. Hank. Or Red Headed Stranger. Thank you for all the lessons man ✌️
Thanks for the lesson! I’m definitely going to give this a try today. 👍
Great instruction. Thanks.

Thank you!
Is there a reason at 3:17 that the G chord is missing the A-string fingering??
Not sure country classics can be stacked, but this is a major crossover classic
I totally agree. You have good taste
Nice to see your chords changing.
Can you make chord at the end of the day by wallows
very good
Top 3 with « Take me home country home » et « City of New Orleans », maybe?
sounds good with the back up,
but not a bad vocal there James.
Whiskey Lullaby
Not sure it’s really country, but Wichita Lineman. Such a lonely song. Starts out with F as the home chord and never returns.
I love Willy and Merle's version!
Such a great tune and those are timeless artists for sure
🙏
Steve Earle does a v good version
He Stopped Lovin Her Today

It’s a cool song but absolutely not one I care to learn … it’s one of those songs that sound great from the original artist perhaps
it doesn't say anything about, Mama, or trains, or trucks, or prison...
