"There are two kinds of men...those who are in love with Emmylou Harris and those who haven't met her yet." - Willie Nelson
For those who haven't heard of I'm just sorry
Spot on!
Damn straight!
I can believe it!
Yup
She’s still playing and singing over 50 years what a musical talent! And one very sincere classy woman, ICON
Few people have given so much to so many, and all her life !
Don’t you think she and John Denver as some Indian in their voice ,brilliant
All so young
It's like Townes sketched it out, and Emmylou filled in the colors. God she's amazing!
J. Mark Lane, Exceptional description; 👍 underrated comment. Happy New year, be well.
@@amandawilcox9638 Thank you!
well said
listened to many versions but Emmylou cuts me to pieces, big boys do cry, you too?
Yours is such an imaginative and dead-on description !! Thanks!!
Luckenbach, Texas, sometime in the '80s, before it became a Destination. Folks sitting on the 3-step bleachers under the huge oak behind the general store. Folks sitting around a long picnic table. Long neck Lone Stars, and several guitars. Several guys knew Townes Van Zandt, and started playing Pancho & Lefty. Never will forget it.
Rodney Crowell, Albert Lee and Hank DeVito?
@norrisbjork1414 Quite possibly, but sad to say, I never caught anyone's full name, except Jim Luckenbach, and I would not have known any of those guys beforehand anyway. It was the first we had heard of Townes Van Zandt.
I can pinpoint the time better: We heard Waylon's "Luckenbach Texas" for the first time, being played over and over and over on speakers in a nearby gift shop (which I think became a dance hall). Believe me, we both knew it by heart by the time we left.
The last time we returned, it was so crowded and noisy, we had to get out of there before it was ruined for us forever.
A place being loved to death.
😊😅
@@bettym7346❤
I loved the song of the same name by. Waylon. .
And me, l'm a 77' old French guy... I discovered Emmylou about 5 years before... Very, very wonderful artist...
French guy too, now 68, listening Emmulou since 1975, saw her live in Paris in 1978. Never will forget the show !
This is by far the best version of this song with a full band.
Yes, with a full band. The best, though, is Townes solo or with one or two good friends.
Something about how she sings it in a slightly happier way than the original/others makes it that much sadder
Loaded deck! How could ya go wrong with Rodney and Albert backing you.
Willie's and merles is better but this is great
@@retriever19golden55For sure Townes rules.
This song was included on the Luxury Liner LP, which I believe is the best record Emmylou ever released.
I bought it back in the 70’s, yes the BEST (well, one of many) of EmmyLou Harris! ❤️ 🎶❤️
Elite Hotel is an outstanding album as well.
@@iamrepmek So many great songs, especially “Til I Gain Control Again “ and “One of These Days”, but who am I kidding, ALL of them! ❤️🎶❤️
@@petermcculloch4933 I agree, I love all of my Emmylou albums, but one night in April 2012, got home from seeing a play my son was in, our oldest son was visiting to watch his brother fill the stage, just like he did for so long. It was youngest sons birthday and I couldn’t sleep, I was playing,y Emmylou albums and I was listening to Luxury Liner on repeat, because I was infatuated with Pancho and Lefty and I realized, light bulb moment, that Luxury Liner is my favorite Emmy album, I had been listening to it since the 70’s, but I was just gobsmacked, I Love that album, what a Hot Band, if you know, you know!!!🔥❤️🔥👏🌟✨🎸🥰
@@iamrepmek yes it sure is!!!
I've been a fan of EmmyLou since 1971 when she was an unknown singing at bars in Washington DC. She was living with her parents in Maryland, divorced with 1 child. Then after she hooked up with Gram Parsons her career began to turn. It's a long story, but Parsons was her mentor and passed away in 1973 of a drug overdose. She went solo after that and turned out a great career. Beautiful voice that's one in a million. I sure do love EmmyLou, inside and out. What a voice.
So sad about Graham leaving. She has been through a lot and a sweet sadness in her voice makes it all the more special when she performs.
Amen!
First saw her at Mr. Henry’s at Tenley Circle in DC back then. Just her and a piano. Love at first sight!
2023, and I can’t believe I have never heard Emmy Lou do this song. Always a favourite of mine, now this is my very all time favourite. An ethereal voice from a beautiful woman
I believe Willie Nelson’s daughter played Emmylou’s recording of this song for him and encouraged him to record it.
@@tjwash2 True story.
Rodney Crowell and Albert Lee in the band. So great!
So few folks have noticed or commented on this….maybe they didn’t need to; but it’s really important to notice.
Hottest hot band around.
@@georgeberger9546Rodney looks young too.
Emmylou is a National Treasure!
Been listening to Emmylou Harris since 1975, when her first two albums dropped. I actually knew who she was because she was best friends with Linda Rondstadt & was credited on her albums for vocal harmonies, before her albums hit the scene. I didn’t know about the Gram connection until the early 90’s when the Fallen Angels live tour from 1973 was finally rereleased & of course she always covers one or two Gram songs per album, keeping his music alive for so many decades of young listeners to discover Gram. She put a spotlight on Townes music and carried Grams music all these years. She is a national treasure ❤
Yeah I'm 60 and I kinda grew up thinking about them as the rat pack of country music.
I saw her when I was 17. And she has been playing for 50 years!
She is drop dead gorgeous without any makeup! Beauty from within glows out if you don't try to cover it up with paste and glue.
This is the voice this song was meant for. I know thats been said before, i just cant help saying it almost every time i hear it
I wore the grooves thru on this record in a cupola of a ninety year old wooden hotel high above BUZZARDS BAY. Cape cod dreaming
Throughout her career, she's been able to garner some of the best musicians in the entire world into her band. My gosh, Albert Lee, Rodney Crowell!!
We’re going way back people!
Lot’s of talent and so much hard work!
Maybe because everyone who is really good would give a leg to play with her. She's awesome.
Such a pure and haunting voice - Emmylou pours her heart and soul into every note. She is the Elder Stateswoman of Country Mudic.
She absolutely deserves all the love, admiration and accolades being showered on her.
A true legend in her own time.
When you closed your eyes and listened, she was the most beautiful girl in the world. And still is.
You don't have to close your eyes. She was & is beautiful.
The first time I heard her, she broke my heart.
The first time I saw her, she did it again.
I wish you rainbows, Emmylou.
You'd think the fact that she's so beautiful would get in the way of the fact that she has the voice of an angel, but it doesn't - her soul still comes through in her music. One my all-time favorite songs performed by one of my all-time favorite singers.
And smart as a whip too. High school valedictorian to boot!!
I’ll take it!
My favourite Emmy song...Red Dirt Girl...sung by Swedish sisters First Aid Kit
Why would her beauty get in the way of her soul coming through in her music? Lmfao
The harmony and the pedal steel and Emmy Lou's lead voice--can't beat it, period!!
I am loving these old videos - I saw this band several times back then. Emmy's a national treasure. This band is too. 'nuff said
I had the great good fortune to meet her one day courtesy of my daughter. What a great talent!
🎼 I saw them in OKC.
Great show x Hot Band &
Emmylou out front 🇺🇲 ♥️
You know, I have never witnessed a single time she was not incredible. I might add over forty years of witnessing.
The last time I was in Austin, years ago, it was to attend a funeral. It was a Sunday so I went over to W 29th, Milto's was closed but next door was a bar-b-que place so I went in to eat. I remember being the only customer in the place. Sat down and looked around and across the table was some very old concert posters on the wall near by. Right in the middle of them all was a Townes's show poster from Nov.1978. It was one of those moments in time that can only happen to you in Austin. So much history there, most of it very happy times, great music, great people. When I listen to this song I always think of Townes. I love Emmylou, but this was Townes's song. That world is gone now but to have been there back then was simply the best of times, ever.
This is the definitive version of this song, recorded on Luxury Liner, one of the best Country albums every recorded. I love Townes, but he must have appreciated this very much because Emmylou is so amazing.
I've been listening to several different versions of this classic song over the last couple of days and discovered a Duo - Tim Gregg and Jay Wickizer on UA-cam - for me they've nailed ' Pancho & Lefty ' better than anyone , better than Willie , Dylan , better even than Emmylou [ and I LOVE Emmylou ] - check it out .
@@peterwilliams6114 Gregg and Wickizer's version is good but sterile compared to Emmylou and the Hot Band. Gregg and Wickizer have very fine voices but having a big band behind them on a song like this loses the feeling and pain of Townes Van Zant's original composition. Listen again to Emmylou, Rodney Crowell, and Hank DeVito's ethereal pedal steel. Peace brother.
Townes Van Zandt Must've had Great Vision, In His Soul, to write such an Amazing Song 🎵. When I first heard this, I got goosebumps Ten Feet Tall!
Glad this gteat song attracts deadbeats who would rather argue about definitive versions than enjoy the performance.
Call your Mom. I'm sure she'll care. Please spare the rest of us.
I guess I'm quite off topic but does anybody know of a good site to stream newly released series online ?
The Hot Band, always super tight and on the money behind that beautiful singing.
This must be what the angels in heaven sound like
Have you heard her sing “Oh come Angel band….” Don’t know the right name….. Think my fave is kinda like this: “ It’s all right, midnight, and I got 2 (3?) more bottles of wine…”. Got the record but no record player! Lol!
Rodney Crowell's voice blends so well with Emmylou's.
I could easily, and happily, listen to this very recording, 5 or more times a day!! Am I normal!! : )))
Yep
The story was Emmylou Harris was lost after Gram Parsons died.
Linda Ronstadt invited her out to her beach house she shared in LA. Showed her around, talked her up, and introduced her at the Troubadour club. Thus helping Emmylou through that rough patch in her life.
The deserts quiet and Cleveland’s cold...that line is just magic to me for some reason
Lindas canções!!!
@john capone he tells a lot. Pancho and lefty were hardcore gunslingers. He wore his gun on the outside as a warning. Dont mess with me. The federalis were after them. Lefty betrayed pancho to the federalis they paid him he went to cleveland living in crappy hotels but he lived to old age with the guilt of what he did.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Was this just a story of two skilled gunfighters on the opposite sides of the law? Or does a deeper listen suggest that maybe Pancho and Lefty were estranged brothers destined for a fatal rivalry? Or perhaps a careful listen could suggest that Pancho actually won the gunfight, buried Lefty, and assumed Lefty's identity to fool the Federales, but finding after everything he could never truly escape his own prison. This ambiguity is one of the reasons I love this song!
This is one of my all time favorites songs!!! I could & do listen to it all the time, especially this Emmylou Harris version, with the great Rodney Crowell, another favorite artist singing backup. My husband and I saw Emmy & Rodney sing this in Seattle, summer tour, 2015! Then we saw Rodney sing this as his closer, last November 19th, 2019! Love the great Townes Van Zandt.❤️💙🧡💚💛💜
Update: My husband and I just saw our 1st concert since seeing Rodney, Nov. 19, 2019, on May 11th, 2023, up here in the PNW!!! He was fantastic, his band is so hot, his new album Chicago Sessions is so good, been playing it constantly. Rodney told the story of why he always closes with Pancho and Lefty… several years ago, he was playing in Ireland & he closed w P&L, he and his band didn’t sing the chorus, but the Irish audience did, they knew it by heart, which surprised Rodney and became his talisman.❤
Saw that tour in Denver. Fantastic!
The voice of an angel... Such a beautiful interpretation .
I love Emmylou, have since I was a teenager in the 70s. She is just as beautiful today. Never heard her do anything that wasn't absolutely perfect!!!
The best I've ever heard of this song. Towns wrote it, Emmylou nailed it
We saw her in The Villages, Florida a year ago.She was very friendly to her fans. So fifty years later I can say once again, Emmylou we love you!”
Learning on July 17, 2024, that this is Emmy's song. I will now only listen to hers.
You should get the recognition you deserve.
@@aaron-dd5zr Another tidbit of history on Emmylou’s cover of Pancho and Lefty, Willie Nelson (who I finally get to see at the Gorge in Washington State in 3 weeks) and Merle Hagard recorded an album together in 1982, I think, but they needed one more Banger to finish the album. It was 2am in the morning, Merle was in his bed sleeping, but Willie couldn’t sleep, his daughter stopped to see how it was going, he said he just needed one great song. Willie’s daughter went home and grabbed Luxury Liner, and played Pancho and Lefty for him, and he was thrilled, he said it was perfection, he and Merle not only covered it, they made a fantastic video with Townes Van Zandt, the genius who wrote and recorded Pancho and Lefty, the scenes with dear sweet Townes are fantastic!!!
@@jimrebr It was her song. So re-dig it yourself
@@aaron-dd5zr no need to be nasty and be a troll, hope you have a nice day, life
@jimrebr you are right. Sorry for that.
Well, I do like all the other versions . I hope you have great rest of the day and Summer
I was on tour once with her on the same bill: she brought me to tears every night.
Emmylou's was my first version of Pancho and Lefty, and still my favorite. :)
This is my favorite version of The Hot Band.
Rodney Crowell-Acoustic Guitar/Vocals
Albert Lee- Lead Guitar/Vocals
Hank Devito- Steel Guitar
Emery Gordy- Bass
Glen Hardin-Piano
John Ware-Drums
Thanks for this. A group like no other....
Great bass line
Totally agree
Thanks for confirming the players in this great lineup.
A young Albert Lee. I wasn't sure it was him. They all played so relaxed and sensitive.
Definitely the best version of this song. What's not to love about Emmylou?
I saw Emmylou a couple of times years ago. One time was at The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. It was a great venue...she was stunning in every way. When she played Poncho and Lefty it was like being transported to another planet..another world. But, when she sang "Good-bye" by Steve Earle, you could have heard a pin drop. Even the bricks in the walls were afraid to move because of the absolute beauty vibrating out of her body and soul....
What a great story, I suppose that was a while ago. The Variety has been destroyed by the new owners and the renovations...never again something like this will be there.
never heard Emmylou do this before, it's so haunting, maybe even more moving than the superlative Willie Nelson version; Ms Harris is a world treasure
Townes Van Zandt's version is best, seeing that he wrote it and all.
Same here. Her version sent chills down my spine and had the hair on my neck standing
Willie learned the song from Emmylou's album and she learned it directly from Van Zandt. It's such a good song all three versions great but I'd rather watch Emmylou sing it.
@@abelmontesdeoca6774 Agreed.
I've listened to other versions, but now I only listen to this one. I love how she harmonizes with the guitar player, "there ain't nobody knows".
Emmylou Harris & Nanci Griffiths it's been a pleasure to know their music.
Good lord she is incredible here
There is just nothing as sweet as a lovely country ballad sung by an earnest beautiful girl with a well played pedal steel crying from what seems like another world...
BTW: this is amazing amount of talent on one stage
The "Hot Band" was not an exaggeration 👍
Coming from someone who mainly listens to metal and hard stuff, emmylous voice gives me goosebumps. This makes me wish I lived in that time. Nostalgia for a time I never was in.
I wish
Just drop the needle, and we can live in any musical time we want to : ))
😊😊
I could listen to this a million times, and mighjt be getting close to that. Emmy Lou rules.
Emmylou absolutely owns this song.
Listen to Townes. He owns, he wrote it.
@@machtschnell7452 you no understand little boy!!
My favorite singer to this day! Love Emmylou Harris.I have seen her perform in person many times. Great memories. Been a fan from the beginning.
Stunning, nothing else needs to be said. There are few this talented.
God that band was tight. I bought this album just when it came out on one slushy Sunday night at a small record store. Amazing album, and this cut was my favorite.
Such an amazing talent, the years have proven she is the best country artist.
When I was a boy she was my first love.. she was so sweet and beautiful I dreamed somehow she I would ride off in the sunset.. still to this day she had a ablity excite me just like when I young boy ..
It is hard to believe how beautiful this song and Emmylou are ❤
Love her voice from back in the day - pitch perfect and clear as a bell!
Voice so pure, face and voice of an angel---- yes, I remember Luxury Liner, and the luxurious Emmylou Harris, a rare gem. 🌹
Seen her several times here in the UK....wonderful voice and blissful harmonies
Her beautiful voice accentuates her God driven soul. 1:37
Just love Emmy Lou got many of her albums. I don't think there is a song of hers, that I don't like. This is one of my favourites, thank you for sharing.
To me the best version of this song. With that hot band. And Emmylou singing and looking so wonderful.
Saw Rodney Crowell on Cape Cod last night at Payomet performance center. Great show
Stunningly beautiful as always with Emmylou. The voice of an angel for us mere mortals.
She has such a beautiful. sweet voice. Great song, great rendition!!!
And don't ignore her power.
Rodney Crowell playing with Emmylou! Very great!
He was a member of the Hot Band.
This is my favorite version of this song and singer of the song, she is haunting captivating and lamenting at the same time,it's quite an incredible performance.
What grace and beauty. I am stunned by this. Townes!
Like Willie said, “there are 2 types of men, those who love Emmylou, and those that haven’t met her yet”.
I saw her at a record store close up & spoke to her. Goddess. Never have I seen such a human woman living goddess.
Yes, I too, have carried a torch for EmmyLou Harris all my life. Her gossamer lilting voice, excellent musicianship, and soulful songs have been inspirational.
la cancion mas bonita que se ha escrito cantada por la mejor emmylou harris maravillosa con afecto desde spain
Chills. Every. Single. Time.
The great Albert Lee on guitar.
There will be another Emmylou. She's a unique gift to mankind
One of the greatest songs ever written
She does a great job ...and should be appreciated more...GOD BLESS EVERYONE ¡¡¡☆☆☆❤❤❤❤
always loved this song love it more when emmy-lou sings it love her
Emmylou should have released it as a single back in ´77. When Willie's son's brought him Emmylou's album 'Luxury Liner' in '83 he found the song he was looking for to his duet album with Merle, and 'Pancho & Lefty' finally made it to a #1 single!
Even though it was not released as single , and this is the strange part of album making ,executive decisions had to be made as to what they would release as singles . In the mid seventies air time was tight on the radio waves and Emmy was relatively still new at the time just a couple years out nationally but it’s one of those things. But the long and the short of it is the song and and emmylou became the reason for everyone else to record it and one of willie Nelson’s and Merle haggard’s
Biggest songs ever! But emmylou’s version is the real deal for simply the level of feeling she displays in the song, truly one of the best!!! ICON
Be still, my heart! This is a true treasure in it's rarest and most beautiful form. Kudos to all involved from day one, to all our Futures! The true definition of Talent as defined by it's original Champion , Mary Martin--who sadly passed from this world a few months ago-- was instrumental in her success, along with quite a few others.
Simply wonderful. A beautiful song! Beautiful lady!
Need to find this concert in full. Man she sung alot of fantastic tunes this set.
Emmylou Harris had a f*ckin' great band in those days. I love the unpolished rough version of Townes, but hell, this is so perfect!
Right before this band was put together Emmylou was told by record label executives that the only way she would ever get any airplay on the radio would be to put together a really hot band. So she did exactly that.
That's why they were "Emmylou Harris and The Hot Band."
Even after 40 years later, they sound as great now as they did then!!!
Couldn't agree more. The rif they do between verses is magic.
Timeless. One of the finest singers of our time,.
Emmylou reminds me of my mother. She was her favorite woman singer in the 70's. I sure miss her! 😢😢😢
Emmylou Harris in my eyes and ears can never be stopped. I've been listening to her since she began recording. Good ole Alabama gal.
Voice of an angel...
Voice? She IS an angel.
Sie hat beides!❤❤❤
Simply BEAUTIFUL...the very best !
Back in the day in the 70's I ended up right in front of the stage right in front of Emmylou at the Roxy in West Hollywood. She was just a few feet away from me while I was tripping on shrooms. I was in Heaven the whole concert. She's some kind of Angel.
Saw Willie and Emmylou together in 78 Waylon had been arrested for coke. Best damn set I ever saw, I was undercover for US marshals I was suppose to aid in an arrest couldn't do it. Lost my job and some other things.
Live your heart Harold! Good on ya.
I hope you have lived a better life since then.
Kept your soul, tho…..
Beautiful.
Emmylou is a national treasure ! ✨️ 🇺🇲
How tender is this version, just amazing! («Shooter» got it flying...)👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is not my generation. I grew up listening music of d 80's but love most country old music classic.👍
Nancy - simply incredible! Townes, you're a legend.
I ve had this on vinyl for years and i didn't know it was Albert Lee on guitar
My heart, my mind and my soul belong to this lady,
Mine belonged already 40 years ago to Lady Emmylou.
a beautiful woman and a voice that comes directly from heaven
Still beautiful ❤❤❤❤
I believe best country song for Pancho and lefty. Thanks beautiful song and voice in the world.
I remember exactly when and where that I first heard this.
Been a fan ever since.
Gosh, those folks were young! Great artists all.
