@@GeometricMasonI think so, yes. I'm divided on doing it at all but I do appreciate their reasoning and I can't really argue with it. Safety, for both the judges and the performers. When I marched Madison in 1994 we had a show where our Guard caption head Chad Duggan got us all together to warn us about the presence of a specific, rather large-bodied judge named Jennifer Something. This particular judge was at that time notorious for being unable to get out of the way of traversal to our next set in the drill. He told us that if she was in the way, DO NOT alter course to avoid her but to run her right over and keep going. Fast forward to the midpoint of the opener. We had a big flag sweep low, turn, and present to an upward 45 angle hold. Jenny just so happened to be in the way of my flag. And so I *clocked* her in the sweep, as instructed. Hard. I think I may have nearly knocked her over. It didn't endanger me at all but I know that shit *hurt*. I felt terrible of course, but I didn't have time to show it at all. I'm just glad she wasn't actually injured, and she continued on her judging apparently unscathed. This time. Modern DCI shows are flatly impossible for judges to learn well enough to avoid the performers in the time available to them prior to the performance all the time, every time. The motion is too unexpected, too chaotic, and too unpredictable from ground level if you're not actually performing for anybody who has *not* actually learned the drill to be able to handle in anything like a safe manner. My counterpoint to that is that removing the field judges also removes the only way they have to effectively and fairly judge some elements you can't access from the press box. Technical execution in the field battery line almost must be evaluated by a judge in the drum line's faces. For example, Star 1993 had what I tuink might still be the most *musical* drum line in DCI history; their dynamic range remains in a class of its own even today. That said, some parts of their book we *so* quiet 10:35 you can't hear them anywhere but on the judge's tape. Nobody would know how well those parts were technically executed without that judge on the field making the recording; some of it would have been nearly inaudible from the press box's distance. Even so, judges can't stay out of the way all the time, in every show. My own experience showed me they can be hurt and we really should avoid accidental injury to nonperformers wherever possible.
My first thought was, “I hope those kids understand the significance of the book they’re playing, and how impactful that show was back in 2003!” But you can tell. They know. This was masterfully redone!! Gave me chills just like it did 20 years ago!!

This show just got better and better with each performance. I always thought the '89 show of "New World" couldn't be beat. Then came '92 and "1812 Overture" which technically was a lower score (robbed!), but a beautiful performance nonetheless. '03 was then set as the new bar to beat with the premier of "Harmonic Journey", but the reprise this year... we are all speechless. Bravo, ladies and gentlemen. You did all of your Phanatics proud.
@@Apollostowel "Phantom Voices" was a good show also. But in fairness, have they put on a BAD show? The Regiment has ALWAYS been a perennial crowd favorite.
I'm with you on the 89 new world show... it was what sparked my love of drum corps, and probably will always be "that show" for me: However, knowing David personally as well as Dawson B, and knowing all they've been through to get this show on the field, this show brings up all kinds of emotions! 🏆
Harmonic Journey truly is the show that will stand the test of time. I think you could talk to any generation of drum corps fan and we can all agree that Harmonic Journey will always be a favorite. The 2003 edition and the now the 2021 edition as well.
I never got to see the original in 2003 as I was marching in DCA with the Buccaneers and had a competition during finals, but it was truly a joy to see this in person from the 50 yard line. Just amazing.

So many corps had lost their identity prior to the 2020-2021 season. What a great year to have a celebration and remember what the activity is all about
Watched this many times since last year .. this show is KILLER good .. the closer makes the hairs stand up starting with those middle horns .. marched 80s drum corps in the drumline and this ranks in the top 10 for me .. winner winner in my book ..
This is the entertainment that needs to be at the stupid bowl. It is so much more entertaining than any half time "show" they have had over the last thirty years.
The 2021 version of PR is the most Phantom Regiment they have been in a long time. Hope they had a great summer, thank you for this amazing performance! Great things in store for PR!! SUTA
One thing that helped bridge this show to the modern era...can we talk about the sound design? So subtle so much of the time but man does it make a difference vs the 2003 show. Great work! Definitely one of my top 3 drum corps shows of all time now.
This show - my gosh... This show... Thank you, to the entire Phantom Regiment family for your efforts this year. You brought some amazing memories and hope during a difficult and unique season.
When I was 4 my dad showed me this show from 2003 and that’s what made me love band, when my parents surprised me to go to Indianapolis for my 16th birthday I was so elated that when the impact toward the end came I shot up and screamed, while I was bawling my eyes out because I’ve been watching that show for 13 years over and over again and finally I saw it in person
It's also so amazing what Phantom can do with the field without huge props that take 50% of the field.... its wonderful to see what drum corps performed like!!!
I'm from the older time era. I marched with Guardsmen in 75 and 76. Phantom great back then too! The rules were very restrictive then. Much more entertaining when dci in the mid 80's got rid of the tick system. I enjoy modern corps, but I agree that the corps get so prop happy and take away from the members performing. I'm not against props. Phantom uses them in a good way to compliment their shows.
So for me, I was never in band, and for a good portion of my life I didn't know what DCI was, but I do appreciate good music of all sorts of tastes. At 15, I picked up a job at the local Regal Cinemas in Florida , and in those days DCI had a pre-show before the movie started and would show clips of the prior years performances so you'd buy tickets to see the finals live at the theater. I'm not sure if they still do that, but this was the performance, Harmonic Journey, they chose to REALLY showcase and everytime it would get my attention in the projection booth and I'd watch it with the audience that I could see beneath me also intrigued and interested...some even clapped and cheered. It was impactful for me to see it again since it was instantly my favorite performance and what get me into following DCI 20 years ago as a young teen. Thanks PR, I'll always be a lifelong fan. SUTA
Dammit, Phantom! Making a grown man cry. That Canon closer was everything. I hope the momentum they created with this show propels them into the 2022 season. Well done!
this is now one of my top 3 phantom regiment shows, awesome drumline and SUPER strong horn line. front ensemble was amazing. i can relate to myself, being a snare drummer it’s always nice to have a good strong horn line with you. thank you regiment
@@justincole6108 god-tier is so right. I don't know how they make the entire show look so effortless. It isn't until a close up at the end that you can even tell it took energy. They're spectacular.
Though most of the crowd was aware of this show, there are probably just as many who haven't and reacted the same way as the one's who have. Phenomenal performance. Think of how much better this would've been had they been working on it as long as their predecessors from 2003.This was clearly the fan favorite of the night. Watching the crowds' reactions to it all was almost as fun as watching the performance. Instead of watching Blue Devils' 2019 finals run in the theatre next spring during the dci in theatres event while the judges are tallying up the scores, I'd much rather watch this run instead. I believe this show is gunna effect the recruitment for Phantom in 2022. side note...I dunno if it's the fact that this is an indoor dome, but the chords come out much clearer than it did in 2003 to the open sky.
I think it might have to do with 21 years on Bb vs 3 in 03. The refinement in the education, balance and tuning process the last couple of decades has given horn lines a much richer quality than when they first switched
Being able to actually experience this show live and in person was absolutely unreal. The amount of passion and hard work that is shown is amazing. Bravo!! Absolutely amazing job to everyone! Absolutely no words can describe how amazing this show was!
I was literally a baby in 2003, soi had no attachment to this show coming into the season outside of a couple of homies I knew marching Phantom this year. But I was thoroughly impressed. This show is so simple in concept but so universally effective. As much as I love a show that tells a deep story, it’s hard to beat the simple effectiveness of “let us take you on a beautiful musical journey.” Such good musical selections and arrangements. I get chills every time I watch that opener and closer. And good god that closer! Easily one of my favorite movements in marching history. I will be singing it the rest of the day now.
Lots of comments about people crying... it's good to know that I'm not alone. I'm surprising my son with tickets to the big show next August. I'm not sure I can handle this in public. Ima be all big-snot-bubble bawling. CANNOT WAIT!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This show turned how I hoped it would, and considering the circumstances of the summer, this is incredible. This show entertained, and that's what it should be all about. You left it all on the field. I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW!!!
Omgoodness. Tears are pouring down my face. Y’all. This. My husband drove by EVV when you were there and stopped to watch/listen. It sounded amazing then (and gosh, if you have the version of Amazing Grace you did then…. He caught it - not sure if you did in field)….. but y’all! Talk about leaving it all on the field!
This is the cleanest, sharpest and overall best PR I have seen in forever. (I’m just a phan of nearly 25 years and have never marched DCI so my opinion probably doesn’t matter to you guys). But I pay money to see these shows and sit in the stands. Harmonic Journey is my all time favorite PR show and this just blew me away. I may or may not have cried at that iconic kickout. Just Amazing.
I want to say thank you to the video production crew for finally getting the audio, camera angles and cuts right. I remember the horrible 1996-1998 productions with their terrible side camera angles and ill-timed shots and criminally bad audio.
nothing with ever compare to the feeling I got when the closer hit in the stadium. the atmosphere was absolutely electric. I still get chills just thinking about it. absolutely insane.
I’m rewatching this show, about 1 week into the 2023 DCI season. Phantom won their first show out, and got 2nd at their next show, beating Blue Stars and Cavies, and behind only Crown. Pre-Covid, Phantom got 12th and looked to be fading. Results like I’m seeing now would’ve never been possible. This show, maybe even this performance, saved Phantom Regiment, and was the start of the resurgence that is happening right now. Phantom may be on their way to a top 5 finish this year, and I’ll point to this show as the turning point
The INTENSITY of that closer though. When I first watched this show, I LITERALLY got goosebumps. Phantom is the best crowd pleaser I've ever witnessed. SUTA
No one band make me watch their performs for many time. But this, Phantom Regiment, you make me watch your perform for many time and I am not boring all the way the show.
This was our favorite when we were in Indianapolis for the Celebration. Our son, who had never shown the slightest interest in drum corp, was so blown away he went and bought some of your merch. He is probably not the only new fan you guys brought into the world of drum corp with this spectacular show.
I just posted about that too, the DL marching double time (or are the horns 1/2 time?) anyway, mellos join the drumline's marching at that point and away we go!
I live in Evansville and Phantom spent a few weeks here this summer preparing their show. We got to see them do a standing playthrough on July 4th and then a full run at a local high school later in the month. The show was great then, but they really kicked it up a notch when we saw it in Indy. My brother and I have been in Indy for every finals performance since 2012 and Phantom's performance this year was the best DCI show I've ever experienced. Thank you Phantom Regiment for a great season! Looking forward to next year.
I would pay indescribable amounts of money to see this show live, what a performance. The crowd reaction is really what makes this show so worth it, the energy and synergy between performers and crowd in this show is something that may never be replicated again. If you were there that night, NEVER forget that. I was in Lucas Oil for Babylon 2018 finals run and I can imagine it felt similar to that but on a different level. Just crazy. I got so teared up at so many points and you can tell that the performers know the responsibilty they had performing this iconic music.
Phenomenal performance. Prefect blend of modern and classic. On a side note, it looks like phantom cracked the code to not getting your video taken down by flomarching. You just have to say it’s authorized!
I am a woodwind player but I absolutely adore DCI, especially Phantom. And this show just means so much to me, the reason why it is making me want to join the Phantom Regiment :))
My primary instrument for most of the time I’ve played music has been/was clarinet, and I marched this show on euph. Anything’s possible man, just gotta practice. A lot 😂
Lots of things give me goosebumps. Nothing has ever given me goosebumps for the length of the final canon hit to the final release, non stop goosebumps. Incredible production.
If they would have scored this year phantom would have hands down won by exponential amounts such a good emotional show and hearing it in person was just 10/10 I would give anything to hear it in person again
Thank you so much for posting this to the Tube. I could and likely will watch this all the time. Seeing it live was even better that night and my kids absolutely loved it. Even made one of them change from viola to trumpet on the first day of school as he sets a new goal to be part of Phantom someday. I hope he can live out that dream.
I’m glad to be living in the city Phantom is from. I’m also in a little group that is part of phantom’s program. Next year Im going to audition to get in. This really inspires me seeing it again. Please wish me luck!
Between this and the original 2003 show I've watched the ending a thousand times, and it never fails to give me goosebumps. Harmonic Journey is what made me fall in love with DCI. So cool they got to bring it back this summer.
This was an amazing rerun of one of the best shows I've seen in dci! Everytime I see this show on video I always get goosebumps and smile always almost in tears when it comes to that finale after the percussion hit those 4 notes, it's so amazing to always see such a crowd stand up and cheer for the band and wish I could've been in the band for such a experience like that. Thank you so much for this amazing rerun of harmonic journey this year, I wish I could've seen it in person definitely but the videos and the hype made up for it. Thank you so much phantom and I hope to see you live in the future.
I wish they had gone for the 2010 all white Phantom Uni's, but 7:18 to the end is literal DCI perfection. They nailed it! i am so happy for them! What an honor it must have been to perform that show.
I can't stop crying. This was one of my absolute favorite shows! I just love them! And I think it's so cool that they repeat the show. It's like a dream come true!

I couldn’t agree MORE!
Ladies and Gentlemen of the Phantom Regiment.....you are fantastic !!
The 2021 version of PR is the most Phantom Regiment they have been in a long time. Hope they had a great summer, thank you for this amazing performance! Great things in store for PR!! SUTA
Congratulations on a legendary season, Regiment! You were the people’s champion this year by far. SUTA!
don’t make fun of me but what does SUTA mean
@@jackpazdernik it’s a secret
Coming from a die hard Cavies fan, DAMN. I’m at a loss of words. Thank you Phantom 🖤🤍
❤️🔥😶🔥🥁😇🎺🔥😶❤️🔥
Glad we could do that for you! Go audition.
@@jadenmccallum17 he’s in phantom now 😭
@@zerocheeks iconic.
@@jadenmccallum17 no my brotha, YOU are iconic. And one day when I’m in PR I hope to be as iconic as a swag snare such as yourself
SUTA
It’s Phaaaaaaaanom Rrrreeeeegimen!
Dammit, Phantom! Making a grown man cry. That Canon closer was everything. I hope the momentum they created with this show propels them into the 2022 season. Well done!
Welcome back, Phantom Regiment! ❤️👏
Ladies and gents....you did the memory of 2003 proud!
this is now one of my top 3 phantom regiment shows, awesome drumline and SUPER strong horn line. front ensemble was amazing. i can relate to myself, being a snare drummer it’s always nice to have a good strong horn line with you. thank you regiment
not to mention the god-tier color guard. the flag feature at the end gets me every time :')
@@justincole6108 god-tier is so right. I don't know how they make the entire show look so effortless. It isn't until a close up at the end that you can even tell it took energy. They're spectacular.
Love watching people losing their shit at about 9:42 on the hit. Great stuff!!
You guys won the 2021 DCI World Championship. I don't care what anybody says.
The crowd "SUTAAA" at 9:39 lifts my soul
You forgot to add "totally not" so that Flo doesn't copyright strike you
Being able to actually experience this show live and in person was absolutely unreal. The amount of passion and hard work that is shown is amazing. Bravo!! Absolutely amazing job to everyone! Absolutely no words can describe how amazing this show was!
Those spine chills, this freaking spine chills at that ending. EVERY SINGLE TIME.
This is the loudest the crowd has ever came through the speakers for me... I'm not crying ur crying
It was insane that night while in Lucas oil
Absolutely beautiful both for the eye and the ear. INCREDIBLE!!!
This very longtime Vanguard fan says a very heartfelt thank you! ♥
This show right here is why I'm a lifelong Drum Corps fan. Thanks for making what the fans want!
I. LOVE. THIS. SHOW!!!
PR leads the pack for decades with the most emotional closers.
I know that version is on UA-cam somewhere. It was on the 1992 DCI Christmas album.

One of my favorite drum corps moves is when Phantom does the kick out! First saw Phantom in 1975. Have loved them ever since!
I want to say thank you to the video production crew for finally getting the audio, camera angles and cuts right. I remember the horrible 1996-1998 productions with their terrible side camera angles and ill-timed shots and criminally bad audio.
Almost 20 years from the 2003 version, I am thrilled they went back and revisited Harmonic Journey, absolutely amazing show. Goosebumps.
nothing with ever compare to the feeling I got when the closer hit in the stadium. the atmosphere was absolutely electric. I still get chills just thinking about it. absolutely insane.
I regret not seeing this in person! Chills the ENTIRE time!
This performance blew my mind. Not a moment goes by that I'm not transfixed and stunned by the sheer beauty and passion of it. Bravo!
They gave the people what they want! Great music, great drill, great uniforms. Let’s get back to more of this please, DCI.
🥁 Amen to that 🎺
2 years later and this show still brings me to tears. Multiple times. A truly magical experience in person
Thoughts going into 2024? Same right?
@@Splooie010 2024 show is even better. But yeah, 2021 saved the corps. For sure
Things have definitely gotten better and thank god lol Phantom Regiment on top
The INTENSITY of that closer though. When I first watched this show, I LITERALLY got goosebumps. Phantom is the best crowd pleaser I've ever witnessed. SUTA
No one band make me watch their performs for many time. But this, Phantom Regiment, you make me watch your perform for many time and I am not boring all the way the show.
Anyone notice a weird glitch in the video at the end where it’s impossible not to cry
9:39 at least for me
This Phantom show gives me the goose bumps every time! Truly a signature sound for the Regiment!
Goosebumps! So awesome!
This was our favorite when we were in Indianapolis for the Celebration. Our son, who had never shown the slightest interest in drum corp, was so blown away he went and bought some of your merch. He is probably not the only new fan you guys brought into the world of drum corp with this spectacular show.
0:23 front and center is the sub that we had today in band. Super cool!!!
I still smile uncontrollably when I hear the Sanctus reprise. God, I love this show.
9:51 That Mello counter-melody kills me every time! Thank you Phantom!
ring ring!
I just posted about that too, the DL marching double time (or are the horns 1/2 time?) anyway, mellos join the drumline's marching at that point and away we go!
This show saved drum corps
I live in Evansville and Phantom spent a few weeks here this summer preparing their show. We got to see them do a standing playthrough on July 4th and then a full run at a local high school later in the month. The show was great then, but they really kicked it up a notch when we saw it in Indy. My brother and I have been in Indy for every finals performance since 2012 and Phantom's performance this year was the best DCI show I've ever experienced. Thank you Phantom Regiment for a great season! Looking forward to next year.
Thank you soooooo much for leaving the last fan applause in. What a moment… What a show
The last 1/4 gave me the biggest serotonin boost ever.
SUTA ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for posting this to the Tube. I could and likely will watch this all the time. Seeing it live was even better that night and my kids absolutely loved it. Even made one of them change from viola to trumpet on the first day of school as he sets a new goal to be part of Phantom someday. I hope he can live out that dream.
I’m glad to be living in the city Phantom is from. I’m also in a little group that is part of phantom’s program. Next year Im going to audition to get in. This really inspires me seeing it again. Please wish me luck!
My gawd!!! That classic phantom sound!!!
Brilliant. Absolutely unreal. The turn around for this corps was incredible to watch. The de facto champs for the 2021 season imo
My band director always used this as a warm-up and it brings me to tears that it’s over. I miss it everyday.
I’ve watched this show like 7 times in the last two days, it’s just amazing. The first time I watched I started crying.
Between this and the original 2003 show I've watched the ending a thousand times, and it never fails to give me goosebumps. Harmonic Journey is what made me fall in love with DCI. So cool they got to bring it back this summer.
first SUTA ❤️
Think it’d be cool if they could’ve somehow switched to the all whites towards the end, but I can’t imagine logistically how that’d work.
I can't stop crying. This was one of my absolute favorite shows! I just love them! And I think it's so cool that they repeat the show. It's like a dream come true!
I’ve watched this maybe …… over 40 times. I get tears every time over the entire show. It’s a work of art. Plain and simple.
Same here. I cannot get through it without getting choked up. :)
The "SUTA!" before the first hit makes me teary eyed every time
