Liszt's B minor Sonata is perhaps the most ingenious piano work I know. It's a true masterpiece and I totally agree with you and with your metaphor on man's life! Thanks for this beautiful research. You are a so serious and accurate musicologist and music lover!

Absolutely fascinating exploration of the intricate relationship between tempo and transcendence in Liszt's B minor Sonata! A slower tempo indeed enhances the overall impressiveness of a performance. It allows for a deeper connection with the musical nuances, unveiling layers of emotion and complexity that might be lost at a faster pace.
It's interesting to note the dynamic between live performances and recordings. In a live setting, the richness of a fuller sound can often compensate for a slower tempo, creating a captivating experience for the audience. However, when it comes to recordings, the faster tempi can compensate for a thinner compressed sound. Perhaps this shift to faster tempi began with the advent of recording technology? Looking forward to more insightful discussions on this topic!

The relation between live performance and recording is indeed an interesting topic. In his little book "About musical phenomenology" Sergiu Celibidache shared his experience in this regard: he says that the tempi that seemed right and natural to him in a live performance appeared to be too slow when he listened to the recording. As a matter of fact this was one of the main reasons to have my entire A Tempo Project filmed: to approximate a live experience as closely as possible.

Is there any record of Liszt's reasons for choosing b minor in this sonata and any possible connection to Bach's b minor mass ?

There is no such record, at least not to my knowledge. On the other hand, Chopin's Sonata in the same key could be something that influenced Liszt's choice - but maybe not.
