    Beethoven's skills as a composer were colossal. The amount of work and effort he put to create such extraordinary works was equally colossal. We were so lucky to have him amongst us, and it's so wonderful that human beings not been born yet will be able to listen to his music in the future.

    You can hear voice and nuances that are impossible to understand when most pianists aim to "amaze" the listener with speed. I am convinced that Liszt's playing was totally different from what most people think. Liszt probably had an extremely delicate and loving touch in the melodic parts, while he showed off a destructive power (he often broke the strings of the pianos) in the dramatic parts but, without necessarily using extreme speeds which he probably reserved for other parts. Obviously a very personal idea.I can assure you that I am a true Liszt junkie!! After Ad nos, this one also really deserves all my compliments. Simply magnificent, clean, precise, dramatic, impeccable!! ps: Some may think that it is much easier to play at this speed. It's not like that at all. It is extremely more difficult. In fast, you can even hide small mistakes, but this way, you can hear every single note! This is true virtuosity!

    • @bernhardruchti
      @bernhardruchti 13 днів тому

      The amazement that many of Liszt's contemporaries expressed about how unusual his playing was, certainly points towards that direction!

    I am very sorry for those who listen to this recording because they will never be able to understand the "magnificence and power (musical power I mean) of this unrivaled masterpiece. Only by studying it, playing it can you fully understand what this composition really is. One Music that will enter inside it gets into the veins, into the head (it took me a year to learn it and I heard it everywhere because it was printed in my head). Every time I play it I always ask myself the same question: "How did Franz Listz write something like that?" I have listened to all the commercially available recordings and even others that have never been commercialized. Jean Guillou; Cochereau, Marie Claire Alain, Fagius, Rotkopf , Helmut Deutsch and many others. But more or less, everyone plays it the same way. Some "destroy" it by performing it in less than 25 minutes. In this thrilling recording, you can fully appreciate how magnificent and powerful this absolute masterpiece by Liszt is. All my heartfelt compliments to to the Master Bernard Ruchti because it is by far the "Most beautiful interpretation currently available."

    I appreciate your dedication and time spent and you are a wonderful musician. I would say it boils down, as usual, to same core paradox : if one endlessly need to justify why this or other choice, is because his/her interpretation alone doesn't speak enough for itself. Look at Richter, he plays Schubert 2 times slower than any other, yet is wonderful because he feels he needs that tempo to change ornamental into organic, not just an intellectual barrier which needs Richter talking about the reasons. So, good luck, but don't overdo it, I would say. Just play as you really feel. Some will be slower, some not, some faster. If everything, and as I see it from watching many of videos here, is slower, then I think no rational explication will make it valid enough, music is like life : sometimes we have to control it, while other times just let your passion burn everything, without limits or gibberish around. Otherwise we end by being constantly artificial.

    • @bernhardruchti
      @bernhardruchti 13 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment. I agree with you that the music itself should be the main focus of any interpretation and that research doesn't help if it sort of replaces musical feeling. However I find the historical context of the Hammerklavier Sonata and its different editions and interpretations most thrilling and exciting and I love exploring the story behind a piece!

    Sehr spannend vorgetragen, mit vielen interessanten Details, und dennoch "zu langsam"! Beethoven wusste, was er tat! Der formale Gesamtzusammenhang muss immer über dem Detail stehen! Und das Utopische ist ein wesentliches Element dieser Komposition; dafür spricht auch Beethovens Bemerkung "Eine Sonate, die den Pianisten zu schaffen machen wird, die man in 50 Jahren spielen wird!"

    Vielen Dank für die gründliche Erläuterung: Hier noch eine Quelle, auf die ich heute zufällig stieß: In der Violinschule von Louis Spohr, der sich ja sehr für die Nutzung des Metronoms eingesetzt hat, beschreibt Spohr im sechsten Abschnitt der zweiten Abteilung "Vom Takte ..." sehr unmissverständlich: "Die Viertelbewegung des Musikstücks soll den Schlägen der Maschine gleichkommen". (Ausgabe von 1832, S.41.) Beste Grüße.

    9:20 Es tut mir leid, ich habe die Einführung noch nicht gehört und ich werde es unbedingt nachholen, aber ich wollte mir zuerst ein Bild von dieser Interpretation machen und bin überzeugt, dass das Tempo des III. Satzes einfach falsch ist. Bei diesem Tempo ergeben die von Beethoven geschriebenen Noten, die Strukturen der einzelnen Passagen, die Instrumentation einfach keinen Sinn. Genause könnte man ein beliebiges anderes Presto oder Allegro nehmen und es Adagio spielen. Man hört dann die einzelnen Noten, aber nicht mehr die Komposition selbst. Ich sage es als Laie und Liebhaber der Quasi una fantasia, der lediglich den ersten Satz zu spielen imstande ist :-) Dies war mein erster Eindruck. Ich lasse mich gerne überzeugen.

    Turning 40 this year. I played clarinet in high school and know how to read music, but don't know how to play piano. It's it too late for me to learn this and more advanced pieces?

      It's never too late - just find a good teacher and start ;)

    0:25 Anyone know if that's a metronome or just a kinetic sculpture? 🤤

    52 minutes for the Fantasy? No wonder the hall is empty.
