Probably one of the best scenic openings to the TV Series there was. Driving into Youngstown with all the Smokestacks, (at least one belching) Industrial Buildings, Railroad Cars and Tracks, with the Intro Music playing. It was really surreal to watch.
My Dad was in this. He's the good looking guy in the suit in the beginning scene and again in the pool hall. Mike Fabek. He's been gone 38 years. Surreal experience watching this.
Michele Huston. I watched the show often. My uncle hitchhiked to that area , went to the army , & started selling cars , and by 1960 my uncle became a car dealer in Monrovia,,calif. Around age 37.
Other than iconic background shots, why they were on Poland Ave is a mystery. You can't get in or out of Y-town on that road easily. My grandparents lived just up the hill from Center St in Lansingville. Vtsko dobre
I also grew up in y-town and was 7 years old when this was shot.I vaguely remember someone mentioning the show being filmed back then.I worked for Republic Steel whilst attending Youngstown State. Unfortunately the steel industry is all but completely gone there now and so is my family. Time marches on. Thankyou for the flicks.
I lived in Chicago and was thirteen at the time. Heard they were filming on Milwaukee avenue and Wood. Ran there and had a chance to meet Martin Milner. George Meharis had left because girls were running up to him and tearing at his cloths for a souvenir. I stood next to Martin Millner so exited as he leaned on that famous car.

I just drove this route this past week - the bridge has been replaced with a new bridge in the very same location - it's the center street bridge and you can see on this map where they made the right hand turn off Poland Ave. (referenced in the dialogue) to cross the bridge: center street, youngstown ohio
hi larry. thanks so much for this info. i'm trying to locate every scene of every episode on google earth. i've done quite a few episodes already. but this bridge, i could not find a truss bridge matching the original on the show. no wonder, it was demolished. the whole area changed so much. an entire steel mill is completely gone! the one thing i could find that is still there, is the storm drain just before the corner. thanks again for filling a blank on my map.
Glad to help, Alberto! By the way, here's a link to a pic of the Castle Restaurant, which stood at the corner of Poland Ave. and Center St. until it was demolished to make way for the newer bridge. You can see it as they make the turn metromonthly.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/blue-collar-eats/
Larry Kennedy got it. that is great. you can really see it's the same one. this eatery must have been really busy. i have been to a lot of steel mills in america, during the 80s, but i dont think i ever got to youngstown. thanks again.
Even without watching this entire episode I can tell immediately that George Maharis is going to be disappointed with his former idol when he hangs out with him again.
wow, you have a part of route 66 in you. i've really tried to locate in on google earth but haven't found it yet. can you tell me if the bridge is still there?
My home town, was born here in 1937 in Northside Hospital. At one time, Youngstown was #3 on a list of cities to be bombed by the enemy, as it was a very important producer of 'steel", so critically needed by our military! Was also known as "Murder Town, USA", when the Mafia once controlled the city. My Dad, Joseph Pallante, told me that he once went to grade school with the (later) notorious 'Sandy Naples'. Glad that my Dad took the 'honest' route in his life! We were poor, but we were 'honest' :)
I met someone who grew up in Youngstown. He told me that it was the Wild West. On Saturday night they locked the doors from the inside because people’s porches, and cars, would be blown up. I drove through there about ten years ago. The city looked empty, and the steel museum was closed.
hi, all episodes are available on dvd from a company called shout. online you may find a few whole episodes, even on youtube. i checked netflix and it doesn't seem to have it.

I remember it well. I worked underneath that bridge at Republic Steel.
My Dad, Joseph Pallante, worked as a Millwright at the Truscon division of Republic Steel, until the plant was closed down!
This was absolutely the grittiest episode of season one.
The Good Ol Days.
This episode was shot in my hometown. They even used the feildhouse at my high school for a few scenes.

This was Martin Milner AND. GEORGE MAHARIS
I watch this show with my brother Miss so much
great nostalgia. I also worked at Republic, under the bridge, for 1 month, the summer of '59, until the big Steel Strike of that year.
Grew up in Warren, but too young to know landscape of Youngstown OH at the time. Hometown of Boom-Boom Mancini. YSU Alumnus.
That is awesome! Really on location.
R.I.P - George Maharis - 94.
EXCELENTE TEMA MUSICAL RELAX SOBRIO
Thanks So Much Super Great Video..Awesome !!!
They took a right on the Center Street Bridge right at the end of this clip. I've crossed it a million times.
I pass it every day I work down in what used to be a part of Sheet&Tube in Casey industrial park Struthers
That turn had little to do with getting them where they were talking about going earlier in that scene .....Ha ha ha !
Gripping action on the highway. Friday night on the CBS television network.
FAMOSO TEMA MUSICAL FUE INSERTADO DENTRO DE LOS MEJORES TEMAS EN UN LONG PLAY DISCOS IMPERIAL AÑOS 60

Even without watching this entire episode I can tell immediately that George Maharis is going to be disappointed with his former idol when he hangs out with him again.
+hebneh You could guess that from the guest star being Darren McGavin.

My father Tony Como was in this episode

when george left the show it just was not as good
Why use a roadmap when that Vette has GPS
James Smith no such thing back then. Keep in mind this was originally shot in 1961 before such technology existed
This was before cars were invented. Of course there was no GPS
Sous titres français? ?
Today Sept 7th Martin Milner died
Lots of money going up into the sky.
