    I’ve discovered that to get strokes and grooves into muscle memory, it takes slow, methodical practice, until it’s 2nd nature. There are no shortcuts. The big pitfall being the endlessly chasing of each new shiny object down rabbit holes, accomplishing little to nothing over time. Does your website include guided pathways, for each lesson to build upon the previous lesson? I’m already a little overwhelmed by the volume and diversity of your fantastic instructional video postings, and want join your website to take the deep and meaningful journey into what you teach. 🙏💙🙏🎶🎸🥁

    Fantastic. Thank you, a very clear explanation. I've been working on this stuff for a good while and haven't quite got to your level of speed with the paradiddles yet 🤣. I teach the rebound stroke to my students but I think it's not very popular in the wider drumming thingy because there is this UA-cam lore about needing to use fingers for articulation of doubles. I can't get that finger stuff to work for me and I think the technique you've described should be part of every drummer's arsenal and maybe add fingers later on if needed although I think not every technique works for every person.
    Anyway, beautiful to see this articulated so clearly 😁🙏

      Thank you ma man. Yeah finger control is a major marketing tool for drummers who want to get views. Jojo on his video says its great to go to Guitar center and show off to the knobs LOL. I don't know even 1 pro drummer that focuses on finger control exclusively and its actually a sure fire way to develop tendonitis. Unreal but thats the way of the world. Also the rebound stroke has been in the shadows because it a "Pro" thing. Not a gimmick. Not easy to acquire and there is a huge lack of players that use it and care about showing it. A perfect storm i guess. Thanks for writing in and many greetings to you :-)

    Phil you always hit the money on your teaching, especially the whole idea about rebound. There’s so much out there about push-pull, throw- catch etc . The whole concept of rebound seems to be buried somewhere. I see yourself and other older cats playing doubles just with rebound. Even Ringo posted recently demonstrating his doubles with rebound. Excellent as usual. Been working out of your Brazilian for the drum set book 👌✌️

      @@philmaturanodrums Thank you, Phil. But over the years I've had all kinds of problems. At my lowest point, I struggled with numbness and even paralysis. My logic then became: if, in a polar world, playing drums can make you sick, then there must be a way to play in a way that makes you well. Finding this way has become my path, so to speak. In my case, there was a special concern: since the mobility of one hand has been severely restricted after an accident as a teenager. But in hindsight, that wasn't the main concern. At the end of the day - so my observation - the real causes in all of such cases is our minds. Often even great books on “mindset” don't help. Because at the end of the day, we are left with a however "good" kind of a “set mind”. Instead of simply become a “free mind” - open to all the opportunities that you might encounter. And even well-known drummers (who's names we all know) answer backstage to my question “Did you ever suffer from any health issues due to playing drums?” as if shot from a pistol: “All the time”. However, not everybody would talk about those issues in public. Naturally, nobody loves »advertising« their private problems. However, my feeling is: You have good posture in several ways. And it seems to me that this is the result of both physical training and mental attitude. That's why I ask. I don't know - but sharing your thoughts on the topic might help many of us? Thank you! Love and Peace my friend!

      @@philmaturanodrums Thank you. That would be great! I do much better these days! I don't feel like being a 100% where I want to be - but I think I've discovered a lot of good stuff already. And my conclusion that you can make playing the drums itself a physical and mental fitness workout is absolutely right. Today, when I go home from the rehearsal room, I always feel a 100% better than before, no matter what. My journey has taught me, that even little in-corrections can cause a lot of harm. A sad example is Phil Collins. But there is also, as far as I learned, always a way out - even with disabilities! A student who was unable to control the movement of his right arm from birth can now move his arm almost naturally due to drumming. 10 years of work that has paid off. @@philmaturanodrums so true as a rebounding stick on a pivot point has a set frequency that can't be increased unless acted upon. Let the stick " rebound " never covered that so you are stuck at one pace. The physics of what is happening to a squeezed grip rebound are mind bending . I have the same issue with moeller ,down tap up stroke, the tap and its rebound that leads to the lift. The whole movement looks like a single action but to increase speed there is a missing link in the tap up section. If I'm making the tap up stroke by acting on the stick it becomes 3 actions again and end up stuck at 1 speed if trying to use 1 flow of bounces. Year in year out mant times I've thought I've finally got the idea of moeller but haven't as I'm using too many actions and can see its fingers covering tap and up.

    • @philmaturanodrums
      @philmaturanodrums  4 місяці тому +1

      @@asdland2218 Yeah ...what you said is exactly the issue. The "Physics" of it. Very few people on this planet can explain this. Thats why there was a 2 year waiting list to study with Murray. The fact of the matter with the rebound to increase the speed is that each hand must be thought of as a single move. The separation of the moves is what the majority of people get wrong. They think of only stickings and think of the paradiddle as 3 notes per hand. When in reality its 4 notes per hand and a coordinated choreography thats makes them flow in the sequence of a paradiddle. Beautiful stuff!

    This is it!!. ¡¡Ahora sí que está claro!!. I think you write frquently in a german magazine "Drums und Percussion" and probably be aware of the german drumming scene; there's a german guy who is a master in this thing of "morphing" the strokes; his name is Claus Hessler. Thank you very-very much for this vital information, this could have saved me from many tendinitis. ¡¡Muchísimas gracias!!.

    Drummers that don't have the rebound stroke in their arsenal, often look stiff and their playing sounds tight with no flow to it. Yes, there's a ton of things you can say musically with rebound stroke based vocabulary. Thanks Phil!!

  • @alwilliams1997
    @alwilliams1997 4 місяці тому +1

    Hi Phil, I've had lessons with many great drummers and they all execute the diddles with a small push pull motion. Are you strictly using rebound with no finger control and downward pressure or controlling the diddles with your fingers in a push pull variation? thanks Al

    • @philmaturanodrums
      @philmaturanodrums  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Al. No absolutely no push pull on the diddles. Or anything. All rebounded and downward pressure applied. I never use push pull.
      I have no idea why people use it that way. Strange to me. Finger control becomes a natural part of it to an extent in the sense of simply having the fingers on the stick...but never the outstanding factor. Hope that helps. Thanks for writing in! I appreciate it :-)
