  • Garlic will grow in Florida, but there are some tricks to getting the bulbs to grow to a full size. Here are some tips for getting a good garlic harvest in a warm climate.
Feel free to share with anyone who may find this information helpful!

Here are links for many of the products I use in my vegetable garden. Note that a lot of these items, like the fertilizers and the trays/saucers, have gotten much more expensive lately (like everything else). I shop around to find the best prices on the items and if I can't find something at a reasonable price then I will just do without or find a substitute):
    7 Gallon Grow Bags: amzn.to/2XaJ1mp
    5 Gallon Grow Bags: amzn.to/3ht2wNP
    10 Gallon Grow Bags: amzn.to/3k4WpkB

    16 Inch Diameter Grow Bag Trays/Saucers: amzn.to/3AiP724
Sustane Organic Fertilizer (4-6-4) 20 lb Bag: amzn.to/3lztPHJ
    or
    Jobe’s Organic Fertilizer (4-4-4): amzn.to/3EdxeV2
    or
    Espoma Organic Fertilizer (3-4-4): amzn.to/3EbvJ9P
For Berries: Espoma Berry-tone Organic Fertilizer (4-3-4): amzn.to/3jlD8dA
In addition to the above fertilizers I occasionally use these seaweed and fish fertilizers to give my plants a boost of nutrients. I also use some of the seaweed fertilizer (half-strength) on my seedlings right after I transplant them (Note: I don’t use fertilizers with fish in them for seedlings):
    Maxicrop Seaweed Fertilizer (Powder): amzn.to/3uWO9ak
    Maxicrop Seaweed Fertilizer (Liquid): amzn.to/37uA0JJ
Neptune's Harvest Tomato & Veg Fertilizer 2-4-2 (Note: this formula is best for first few weeks of plant growth, as it encourages lots of green leafy growth. For fruiting/flowering plants, I switch to the Rose & Flowering formula after the first few weeks. Also, this contains fish and the smell attracts animals, which will dig up the plants trying to find the source of the fish smell, so I use it early in day and water it in just before dark to minimize the smell). amzn.to/3r8OJ40
Neptune's Harvest Rose & Flowering Formula 2-6-4 (Note: this formula is best for later stages of plant growth to encourage more flowers and fruit to grow. This formula also contains fish so everything I said above about attracting animals applies to this formula too). amzn.to/3KqBino
The Following Organic Soil Amendments Add Trace Minerals To The Soil.
Green Sand (Organic Soil Amendment Adds Trace Minerals): amzn.to/3z5uG7B
Kelp Meal (Organic Soil Amendment Adds Trace Minerals): amzn.to/3tz2lFH
    Dolomite Lime: amzn.to/3CbclIl
    Self-Watering Grow Boxes:
    Patio Pickers: amzn.to/3vrhHhW
    or
    Earthbox: amzn.to/39VfsaX
Row Cover (This is a multipurpose plant covering that can protect plants from insects, provide some cold protection in winter, and can also provide a small amount of shade): amzn.to/3nreXh5
    Drip Irrigation: amzn.to/3uzbhuV

Yes it can be a challenge here. I’m a native Floridian, but I had to learn the hard way too because I assumed I could follow the typical gardening guides and it was only through some failures that I realized we are very different than the rest of the US.

I’m central Florida as well 9b, I am so excited now to plant garlic( I didn’t think we could grow it here).. sadly I’ll have to wait til next year because it is now to late for me to vernalize them the appropriate time.

    • @floridavegetablegardening
      @floridavegetablegardening  2 роки тому +1

Yes it is pretty late to start vernalizing now, but it may still be possible to get a harvest this year if you want to try. You could try vernalizing from now until early January, plant in early January and see what happens. It isn’t a guarantee but if you bought the seed garlic from a northern farm then it’s possible that the garlic may have already been exposed to cold temperatures for awhile and may not need as long to vernalize, depending on how they store their seed garlic. I got my garlic from northern farms: Filaree farm in WA and Giving Ground Seeds in Idaho.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to risk it with garlic this year, you could try planting elephant garlic. It isn’t a true garlic, but it’s a close relative of garlic. I have never tried it or grown it but I know other Floridians like to grow it because it doesn’t need vernalization. I think people usually plant it in October and November here in Florida.

I believe that Pescadoro Red is one of the Creole Garlics. But reading about different people's experience with Creole garlics, vernalization seems to help with some of them (ex. Ajo Rojo). I want to try the *Cuban Purple* Creole garlic! If Cuba has an heirloom garlic, that would be the one to go with, the most likely to succeed where it's hot, right? But Cuba has mountains, I believe. Not sure if they are tall enough to make a cooler climate up there, but I guess we'll see, if we ever get the opportunity to try.

Excellent presentation. Thank you. I missed this year's opportunity, but I hope to use the information to grow garlic next year. I add garlic to a majority of my dinner meals, and hope to start fermenting garlic for the additional health benefits. The soil in suburban south Florida is so toxic it's difficult to grow anything, and what does grow is hardly organic no matter how careful you are. Nearly everyone here sprays their yards with pesticides and the runoff from rain is unavoidable. I will need to grow my garlic in raised planter beds.

Thanks! I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos! After I harvest the garlic, I "cure" the garlic in the shade on my back porch. I leave it whole (stems and roots intact) and only slightly brush off the dirt and sometimes the outermost dirty layer of skin if it's really dirty. I spread them out on racks so there is good airflow. You're supposed to cure garlic for 10-14 days, but I tend to let it go longer (probably not a good thing) because I'm usually too busy to clean it right away. After curing for a couple of weeks, I clean it by cutting off the stems and hanging roots and remove any really dirty outer layers of the papery skin (but I try not to remove much of the dry skin. I leave as much on as I can). After curing I bring it inside and store it in the coolest, driest part of the house and I leave it out in baskets, not in closed/sealed containers. Technically, you're supposed to store it at like 50 degrees F but I don't have any way to store them at that temperature. My house is usually quite warm and they are stored at around 79 - 80 degrees F. I haven't ever had them go bad, but it's possible they will start to sprout eventually. I only keep the cured seed garlic at room temperature for around 5 months before I put them in the refrigerator to vernalize them for the next planting. I don't think it would hurt anything to put seed garlic in the refrigerator early if you are worried that they are going to sprout. However, just know that if you have been storing garlic in the refrigerator (which is fine to do) and then you take it out, it will sprout very quickly, so only take it out right when you are ready to plant it or cook with it.

Thanks! I have never grown elephant garlic, but I think it is also supposed to be vernalized for best results. However, I have heard someone say that they were able to get bulbs on elephant garlic planted in November, without being refrigerated. The bulbs were smaller than would be expected, but they got individual cloves in the bulbs, so it may work. I would think elephant garlic would be your best chance of getting a bulb without vernalization, but it still may not get a bulb. It's worth a try! Elephant garlic is closely related to leeks, so if it doesn't get a big bulb, you could probably still use it similar to how you would use a leek.

My assumption is that since garlic needs colder temperatures than most of us have in Florida, it would be pretty expensive for a farm to have to cold treat (refrigerate) garlic in mass quantities to grow/sell it. Maybe in North Florida they would be able to farm it without refrigerating it, but it would probably be risky even in North FL if you were trying to produce it commercially. There also may not be much demand for seed garlic in Florida since a lot of people don't realize it can be grown here. I think Noble Roots Farm in Eustis, FL sells FL friendly seed garlic during our planting season.

It somewhat depends on how early or late I get it planted, but I usually harvest around early May. It may differ depending on whether you’re growing a soft neck or hard neck variety. I grow soft neck varieties. From what I understand, the sign to look for to tell you when they are ready is when the leaves start dying. The rule of thumb for softnecks is to harvest when the bottom few leaves turn brown. For hardnecks I think you’re supposed to wait until half of the leaves turn brown. I will dig one up when I see a few of the bottom leaves dying to see if they’re ready.

Hi. Where did you buy the bulbs from? If it was Filaree, I found out that they pre-vernalize the bulbs they sell and they should be fine to plant with little or no refrigeration. If you got them from somewhere that doesn’t pre-vernalize then I would go ahead and put them in the refrigerator now and then plant them at the end of December or early January. I have done that and still got bulbs. I wouldn’t count on them lasting until next year.

@@floridavegetablegardening Thank you! Sorry, I missed your answer. I'll wait to plant them then and use that grow bed for a short 30-day crop. I appreciate your advice.

Where does one find these types of garlic here in Florida? I’ve never seen them in big box stores or even local nurseries, which is why I try every year unsuccessfully to grow garlic from store bought elephant or colossal garlic. I get the scapes and use them at least but never get the bulbs

I got mine online. I know of one farm in Florida that sells seed garlic, but they were sold out when I ordered so I just did a search online for the varieties I was looking for and found a few farms that had them. The farm in Florida is called Noble Roots. You could try them next year. You can purchase from them online and have it shipped as well.

@@floridavegetablegardening just checked their website and they only sell garlic from July 18th to August 2nd, and it looks like they are already sold out??? Today is only 5 days after they’ve been selling it and they are already sold out??? I didn’t think buying garlic was like buying some collectible beanie babies or cabbage patch dolls where people would wait days in front of the store to be first in line. Stranger still is you have to pick up the garlic at a marathon gas station in Melbourne FL on a specific Wednesday between 1pm and 1:20pm. This has to be a joke right?

@@kma5699 wow, that’s fast to sell out! They were also sold out when I was shopping for garlic a couple of years ago so I just purchased mine online from farms up north. I didn’t know about there being pick up times from a gas station. That is kind of strange. They used to ship it out, I thought. I have been saving some of my harvests for the next seasons’ plantings so I won’t have to worry about it finding it every year, but I wanted to try a few new varieties this year and I had a hard time finding what I was looking for. Seems like a lot of places are sold out of many types of garlic. I did finally find the varieties I wanted from Filaree farm and Mad River Garlic. Neither are local and I am guessing they are going to ship pretty late so I will probably have to plant them later than I normally would but that’s ok with me. You could try one of those places if you’re ok with planting later.

Filaree Garlic Farm, which pre-vernalizes their garlic. And also Giving Ground Seeds. I also ordered some from Urban Farmer this year, but it’s my first time ordering from them so I can’t say if it’s a good source or not.

I don't understand planting garlic bulbs to just get another garlic bulb

You plant the individual cloves, not the whole bulb. Each clove planted will produce a whole bulb of garlic.
