@@dnevnikru547 a disgrace to his name
Yes it can. A lot of stoner and doom bands even go down to F or G on a short scale guitar. It's part of the genre's tone.
This is gd to hear. Can u suggest bands?
@@DirtyHippyStudio Sleep, High On Fire, The Sword, YOB, Electric Wizard, Monolord, Kylesa "Unspoken", Russian Circles (instrumental band more post metal).
Bmth used to tune to A# with a Les Paul with an 80 for the Low A#
Recommend Gibson with bass pedals
I’ve seen some bands go to g#
I can't stand playing in A without a baritone scale, but your tone was good.
Thanks Chris!
Chris Counts do you hate slipknot and jinjer
first?
i throw my LTD ec-1000 in Drop B. Any scale length will work with the right setup. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Mason!
@Mason, any tips for the setup?? I have the same LTD but man, not sure what it is, drop A sounds bad.. muddy and all around no punch at all. I use the Mammoth slinky 12-62 and it does not work good at all... How did you managed this?
DaniTwisted I use a 70 for the low A and now my LTD EC handles Drop A perfectly
What about the intonation guys? Does it really work?
@@kevindavid37 In fact yes, it works. It's also possible to intimate it. Problem I still keep having though is that when I strum the string harder, the pitch wobbles slightly on the low B String. I guess depending on the guitar specifically bit I found that I need to be gentle with the pick otherwise it sounds very weird :/
But let's not forget that that what baritone and multi scale guitars are created, if it was not necessary to have longer scale for low runnings they would not have existed :D
The Les Paul is capable of anything! I've owned one for 20 years and it is my main guitar. I plan on buying an Alpine White Custom in the near future. Love the riff by the way!
I have 13-65 guage strings on my 24.75” Epiphone les Paul II special w Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbuckers, its intonated for/tuned to Drop A and it never goes out of tune and sounds amazing
What strings do you use?
got a Epi SG Special II and i got DDT mega heavy(13-65) i play Melodic Death Metal/Metalcore in Drop B(All That Remains, Parkway Drive, etc. If a skinny Les Paul can take it then an SG is prob better the SG has a thick ffretboard but skinny neck, looks and sounds amazing actually. I tend to think SGs can take a punishing of shred, and since its a thicker guitar it has more heavier sustain, deep bassy(but not too bassy!!)growl on the low end and the high end just sings and the long pinch harmonics are clearer also. I cant wait to put these babies on when the time comes😲😃🤘
I played in drop a on a Gibson sg for years
I just recently played one. What a beautiful guitar!
How is it ?
I was sceptical because of the scale length. But YOU DID IT!
Nice song with great choirs.
Don't know if I can watch the live stream tonight, will catch it later 😉
alright buddy! Catch you in the next one!
I did drop G on les paul of washburn :)
@@xanderraymondcharles so you think an epiphone les Paul jr could? Lol
Low drop tunings aren't really my thing... That being said, using an 8 string set was ingenious and it sounds fantastic. How is the tension?
Feels like 10s on standard tuning , using heavier strings on low tunings is quite common
@@Zink971 if it feels like 10s I'd need even heavier gauges lol cause I use 12s in standard. .12 to .52 I believe right now (that said I used .13 to 64 in C Standard and that was pretty comfy for me. Drop A# was pretty comfy too. Drop A I might need something thicker)
Awesome sounding song! I've been using Drop Bb tuning on my 24.75" Les Paul for some time now. I actually do quite a lot of soloing in that tuning, but I guess I'm used to playing with slightly more tension and maybe I'm losing out on some sustain in this tuning. My gauge set is 11,16,20,34,52,68.
That was a killer track man ! Thanks for doing a video about this
The rhythm tone sounds massive in the mix! Brutal af \m/
Great killer tone, dude! The setting was well done too.
Drop A ...when you can’t afford a 7 string and don’t care about soloing 😂
So true hahah!
>Chug Life
Well then
Yes
Aka Bring Me The Horizon
This is why drop is my favorite tuning 🤙🏼👏🏼👌. Even just strumming the top 3 strings is perfection
That intro singing was tight son!! I cracked up at the end a bit. Just saw them perform that at Inkarseration ( Mansfield penitentiary). Enjoy the content man, keep up the great work.
Man, thanks for this video, last year i totally got into Les Pauls and i ak starting to navigate towards Meshuggah. Didnt't think such things could coexist.
A resounding yes! I've had my epi LP in drop A for years and I've had my Explorer in drop A since I got it(12-72). I'm one of those "old cats" but I've been drop tuning since the early 90's. For rhythm it's absolutely crushing. Great vid and killer song Ray!
i also have a gibson explorer in drop a#, absolutely madness with proper riffs
I have a question:
There's a certain sound a Les Paul has, if you listen closely it has a "bigger sound". I would love to know if the Jim Root Strat, or Mick Thomson Jackson also have that big sound? It's a small difference, but once you hear it in person and notice that big sound, it's hard to go back to any other guitar. I haven't found another guitar that can produce that full sound the Gibson's have.
As you said, Gibson aren't very playable, especially for solos. But the sound is so damn good.
the shorter scale usually gives it punchier bass, there are a few singlecut options that are more playable (especially for metal) and have the same scale, the best one is probably the ESP Eclipse.
They usually come with EMGs but finding the right seymour duncans to slap in there can give you a huge sound
I’d say partially is just double tracking guitars and the overall mix. In person, a Les Paul would probably still sound bigger.
The dudes from Nile tune their Dean guitars to Drop A, and they all have used regular six strings with a 24.75 inch scale. If it works for them, I can easily say that it would work more than perfect for you!
I personally would rather just use a Fender scale length guitar, or even a baritone or a multi scale.
Enzo Almada recently I’ve been preferring multi scale guitars for tuning lower, especially since I’ve been playing lead. So many artists have gotten me turned on to playing multi scale like Charles Caswell from Berried alive and Rusty Cooley.
Love the song Ray! Great riffs
Thanks josh!!
As long as you have heavy strings it’ll work. Love your videos!
Thanks Nate!!!
In my experience you can drop tune any guitar as long as you set it up for heavier strings. I've gone down to B on my old SG (wish I didn't sell it) and it did death metal and chugs just fine, strung it with 11-52 ernie balls for that. That was a killer song by the way.
lol the finish prints...can tell you havent stopped playing it since the demo vid huh,? always great when a certain guitar hits the "home run". looks great as usual. \m/
YOOOO THAT BREAKDOWN WAS PHATTTT!!! Sic video and song my dude 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Thanks bosss! I’m so pumped for tonight!
I love this. I keep coming for another listen.
Thanks man! It’s on Spotify under Luna Muerta - Battlefield
I have a Les Paul clone - going to give it a try. Love your playing and production!
GOD DAMN BOY! That was so good I had to go back and listen to it again! I never understood why people said that. I mean a guy from The Ghost Inside played a LP in drop A# and it was just fine. Not everyone has to play a S shape. But haters gonna hate man. Great work
Thanks for the tips on strings. My Dean V stealth is in Bb. I'm using the Ernie Ball Mammoth set with a 64 on the bottom. It's slinky but not floppy and I can still solo on it.
That's a badass songs you wrote Rayray!
I love that opening of your song there !!
thanks Terry! Im gonna release this song in the summer. Either June of July
I used to go to drop A in my old heavy hardcore band on an epiphone gothic les Paul sounded killer not gonna lie
Love that gibson and that flag. Also, got mine in drop B myself.
Never tried Drop A on a non 7 string guitar, but I get away with C standard/Drop B just fine with a 11 - 60 set on my Gibson Thunderhorse Explorer. I found you can go lighter on the high strings and it still works fine and allows you to still play lead. Arch Enemy plays in C standard on Gibson scales with just 11 - 59.
I go to drop A and B with Mammoth Slinky strings 12 - 62
@@Zeagods-CyberShadow
lol, i do drop f-drop d1 with 4 string bass set (45-100)
LOOOOOOOVED
The behind the saddle RAKE
Hell yeah thanks man I thought it sounded pretty sick as well 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Ive been on dropped b for 3 years...and fuckin love it!
Sounds legit to me.. Believe I asked this question on your stream. 🤘🏾
hell yeah Ray!
Hey Ray do you have any videos that show the complete process on making a song. From starting with a riff all the way through to a full song. I got back into playing guitar a couple years ago but back when I started playing all I had was a old 4 track recorder. I would love to be able to turn my riffs and song ideas into actual songs like you do.
I played drop a on a strat in high school lol. I feel like pretty much anything can handle it with the right strings/setup.
So I have a fernandes vertigo with 24.75 neck and I have it in B standard. I think it totally can drop to A, but it may benefit from better tuning heads. My SG is in C standard all the time with 63-13s. Surprisingly, my buddy plays grindcore with A standard and he has pretty light strings for that, but he's using more lead style guitars with those locking things
Impressive tone and song! 🤘
I believe those 16th notes at 2:53 would have come out way clearer on a 25.5 guitar. That said, the palm mutes on the Gibby were like a punch in the gut!
you must be right cause i didnt even hear/notice the 16th notes until you pointed it out and i went back to listen to it... i thought there was only 8ths the whole time lmao
Very nice job!!
What's amp you used for that Gibson Les Paul to do this strong metal?
Between my 8 string Schecter and my Epi Les Paul Prophecy, I like the Prophecy more. Drop a with Skinny top beefy bottoms, and it just sings. Plus the epi's neck is so much better. I love the EMG tone from my 808's but that chug from the fishmans is just *chef's kiss*
Les Paul´s are great for drop tuning, sick good demo =) cheers
I play in drop B on my LTD ec with EMGs all the time man!!!! metalcore is life :D
Sick song. question - did you have to adjust the nut, eg cut the slots to accommodate the higher gauge ?
Very nice guitar position. I can respect that.
New here. Great video and killer track. Stay Metal indeed.
Thanks boss
Little trick…instead of running your strings normally loop them through the front of the bridge out the back and back over the bridge. It more or less increases your scale length. (Thank you Father Zakk Wylde for that one)
I'm instantly hooked! Your stuff is awesome! And btw, you got a new subscriber here! 👊💪

Hey thanks so much!!!!
@@xanderraymondcharles 👊😊🤟
Awwww Drop A, such a sick tuning that I love so much
Tremendo sonido!!! 🔥🔥 Podrías decirme como se consigue esa distorsion cruda? Suena muy bien!
JAMES SCOTT NICHOLSON,ONTARIO, CANADA 🇨🇦 I AM 50,AND LOVE MY LES PAULS FOR THAT REASON. I PLAY IN
OVER 40 DIFFERENT TUNINGS,PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS AFRAID AS SOON AS YOUR 1STEP DOWN. (OLD CRUE) IS ALL ONE
STEP,AND I TELL PEOPLE,”THEY MAKE DIFFERENT GUAGES FOR A REASON.OBVIOUSLY I GREW UP ON ZEPPELIN,WHEN
95% OF THE GUITARISTS WERE LEARNING THE HARD ROCKIN STANDARD STUFF, I WAS INSPIRED BY ALTERNATE TUNINGS
LEARNING PAGES MYSTICAL SIDE??? TOP LEFT 😎 TUNE IT ANYWAY YOU WANT. THAT SOUNDED GREAT 👍
Sounds sick but I didn’t hear a low A note, you were on the second fret the whole time. Either way it sounded sick.
Sounds killer 🤘 what microphone do you use when you talk thanks man
Did you just change strings or did you have to adjust the action height and/or truss rod in this case?
3:40 that lick in the breakdown sounds soo siiick!
Very Cool!! Loved it!
While messing with all these different tunings, do you intonate the guitar or simply change string guages? Obviously, if you're a professional touring musician, you would have multiple times guitars but for bedroom playing, do you find changing string gauges as adequate?
Sounds super sick. Do you have to loosen the neck before?
What pickups are in this thing? Those neck cleans are amazing.
Pretty good BUT it still sounds kinda flat imo, I'd still get at least a 27" scale for a more brighter tone and note definition for drop A and below.
Gibson guitars to me, yes including epiphone, are probably the most versatile guitars. when I used my gibson lpj pro on bullet for my valentine, it still had that modern metal sound. Plus look at dethklok, both the real and fictional band, they all use gibson and still sound heavy.
I have an EC-1000 in Drop A# with 12-68 strings. And that's down from 13-72. Leads were HELL.
Sick song bro!
One of the classiest looking Les Pauls out there 😮💨
Did you have to do any changes to the guitar nut? Thx
I know this has nothing to do with the guitar tuning or the guitar but whats the best modern metal dialing into a boss katan mk II 50 wtt practice amp ive been messing with it for weeks and cant get that sound that i like
What choir library did you use? Great video btw
my custom build guitar is 24.75" Drop G#, 014-018-024-038-050-072 gauge
pitch & intonation was perfect
Hell yeah brother
not really in super low tuning but In flames are my favourite band and in the last few years the tuned from C std to drop A#, on my Esp Eclipse I use Ernie ball 12-56 to play in D-std and it's amazing; you may want to try the Ernie ball Mammoth set (12-62) and the baritone set (13-72) so you don't waste money on 2 useless strings of an 8string set
Sound cool! I think band Necros Christos use drop A to a 6 strings guitar too!
That's a nice looking Gibson. I havent seen one painted like that where the black doesnt wrap to the backside. Was this custom painted?
No sir it’s a new model
Its the 2019 modern
Nice! Any chance you could share the individual gauges?
I used to play drop e on my Tom Delong strat. Lol
I've an Epiphone Les Paul 7 string - so it's always in B tunings, sometimes I drop it down to A and I've no issues with it. for me, the tone is in the hands that play it!
Awesome! CRushing!
Sunn O))) has used Drop A on Les Paul’s since the 90’s
I did this with my epiphone les paul and it holds tuning and sounds killer. Instead of the 8 string pack I used Ernie ball mammoth slinky's which are a hair thinner but work great.
LeoLicc Do you have any fret buzz? Especially on the low B String? I‘m using a Ibanez RG right now and had to swap the low String to a 72 because I didn‘t want to higher my action. Currently thinking about switching to a Les Paul.
@@flowryan5829 I do have some fret buzz on my low A but it's to be expected. I raised the action a bit and it sounds pretty clean. If you switch to the Les Paul by the Mammoth Slinky pack they are perfect.
LeoLicc well, looks like it‘s time for the good ol‘ 72 String again. Or I go completely bonkers and do the Lee Malia with a '80 String 😂
@@flowryan5829 😂 Practically a bass string lol
LeoLicc It looks kind of funky but it works just fine. No fret buzz, no wobbly string, no „ooooooing“-sound. It‘s the second best thing one can do when tuned that low, right after buying a baritone guitar. And the tone it brings is just insane.
How was the intonation? Did it intonate good on the 12th fret?
I have a schecter reaper 6 with a 25.5 scale neck. Can it handle drop a? What adjustments would i need to make if any?
Well, I've got a 30 inch scale super strat tuned to drop G. Anything is capable of heavy if set up properly.
Yeah but what's the intonation like? I'm trying to do b flat on my sg with 12-64 and the intonation needs more length
That choir sound though 4:06👍🏾
Great song, Dude!
thanks AL!
Uh? Yeah? I got an LP here in Drop A and sounds like a goddamn beast!!!
Sounds great to me man!
Can you please tell us what choir you used for that intro?!?!?!? Thanx
I just bought a set of Ernie Ball Mammoth Slinky 12-62. Did you have to adjust The bridge and tail piece?
Yeah bridge tailpiece and truss rod
Longer scale, more stability, probably more tuning "endurance", shorter ones, just warmer, smoother, and sexy... In my opinion. My Gibson les Paul works in c tuning or drop a flat, with 12 56, but I could use thicker or thinner it depends, a 994 Gibson les Paul that always gets the job done. Old but Gold.
Totally can. Check out Scissorfight, they play drop A on a friggin Gretch. No problem at all and it sounds like an earthquake.
Hey man, I know this is a year old vidoe but how did the excitement last. Did the Les paul stay in tune. I have a 24 scale guitar and thinking about going A# but using 14-64 or 14-68. What do you think
Think you’re guitars’ gonna run outa intonation space soon
Did this on the stock Bridge/ nut?
Aaron Lewis does it, and I'm pretty sure Jolly from Bad Omens had a Drop A# Les Paul in the early years of touring. I would assume Aaron might have a modded Les Paul with how huge and low their songs are. Ironically his guitar player Mike Mushok produced my favorite baritone ever.
i ran a 68 for my low A once. it was GREAT
Damn I gotta step my game up I only had a 64 haha
@@xanderraymondcharles yeah i have paradigm heavy bottoms atm. stringjoy makes the best weird packs though
Travy TV I run 70 😂🤷♂️
Stephen O'Malley has a .74 low 6th on his TB1000S (same scale as a les paul)
I think I have (besides the Mick Thompson and Jim Root axes) never heard a guitar that sounds heavier in Drop A
I have my LP in A with a 74 on the bottom. It's okay. I have a 27" Solar with an Evertune on the way though 😁
How does the intonation on the higher frets hold up with a .74 on the bottom? I always thought that going above a .62 or .64 on a Les Paul-style guitar would be a recipe for disaster, but if you can get a .74 intonated then that's pretty impressive for a 24.75" guitar
The riff at 3:17 omg its so good
Thanks boss
This is some sick stuff man, I love it! Found this video trying to look up info on low tunings for short scales, really helps to know it’s possible. I listened to some of your EPs too! Killer stuff; did you use the Les Paul in those recordings?
