L'ensemble est correct, mais quelle idée saugrenue d'avoir commencé par Giulietta au lieu d'Olympia (parfois Giulietta succède à Antonia dans certaines versions, certes, mais Olympia est toujours la première) et d'avoir supprimé le rôle véritable de Nicklaus: la muse. Chéreau fut souvent mieux inspiré!!
Au fait, n'est-ce pas Niklausse un rôle dont la tessiture est celle d'une femme qui s'habille en homme? Ici il semblerait que le rôle a été "ténorisé".
This was not uncommon practice, although the late 1970s was late for this casting. It wasn’t clear how the role functioned in the opera since a lot of what Offenbach had written hadn’t been found yet. Since Nicklausse was in what was the then “standard” version of the opera seen as a competitively minor character, directors and conductors didn’t really see the issue. The director of this production made it clear at the time that he didn’t think the opera in the form as it existed was what Offenbach had intended so he felt at liberty to make his own version. Technically he was right.
