In high school in the 90s I had a band called phenobarbital (seems pretty cringe now), that was entirely themed and influenced by Heaven’s Gate. Literally, the cover to the tape we put out had 39 black boxes on it. God, that’s embarrassing to admit, hadn’t thought of that in a while, lol.
Appreciate that modern bands like Drab Majesty is bringing back the 80s synthwave music. Plus, they totally nailed and it sounds so accurate as though its legit that this song sounds like from the 80s.
My cousin was buried in Malcolm's burial plot in Corpus Christi. He died in he same week and his family sold my Uncle the plot at Sea Side Memorial. This happened when I was in 7 the grade and I always held on to this fascination to Heavens Gate hitting so close to home. This song is one of my most favorite songs ever.
It seems like they're starting to get up there more recently. They played a show in Atlanta a few months back and like several of my friends, who didn't even know each other, were posting photos from it.

Some details in this video you may not have noticed: In the beginning of the video the character wearing glasses has a purple cloth pulled over his face and then bolts upright appearing to gasp for breath -- like he'd been holding it. The 39 people who died did so in stages with those that died later putting a purple cloth over the faces of the people dying before them (except for the last two). Also, they tied a plastic bag over their own head after ingesting sedatives to ensure that they would asphyxiate after falling asleep.
I just found out about heaven's gate because of this song. I can't explain how DRAWN I am to this case combined with this very very addiccting song. I wonder how desperate those people were. It's ALL so very curious, obscure and still addiccting. I CAN'T get enough of this song. I am obsessed with both. I've got such a weird feeling about It all. It's like they are calling me
I get the sense that D.D. had a certain understanding of the condition that Heaven's Gate cultists were under, a compassionate one, one which recognized the genuine spiritual aspiration at play. Enormous power in this song.
Knowing the meaning of this song - Heaven's Gate suicides - it's incredibly powerful and very very sad. You're right Deb, it really doesn't make a lot of sense.
The word "obsessed" does not even begin to describe how I feel about Drab. I'm so glad I got to snag a picture and chat with Deb Demure. He is so cool and extremely talented. ❤
I was already in love with Drab, then I found out Deb was fascinated by other worldly cults like heavens gate.... Their music and imagery reflects the beautiful strangeness of the unknown world like no other band... i want to cry
@DCM88 Those cults are hateful and want to hurt people, so I doubt he'd be into it. Drab are sweet boys. So to be more precise... the "gothic" genre is about what Victor Sage calls the "dark epiphany," which focuses on the sins of the past, and on the evil things that people do with power. And there is usually a measure of terror and horror at these tragedies, one or the other, and sadness. That's very different from being in a hateful cult that takes pleasure in hurting people. That is not a good thing, and it's very sad to see people sanctioning things like that in this day and age. If you take my advice, I wouldn't dabble in things like that.
I just watched a documentary on the Heavens Gate suicides and after seeing Applewhites final video I'm like...Drab? Now I understand this song/video. You guys are absolutely amazing.
I just read about the Heaven's gate cult and Marshall Applewhite, these people didn't deserve to die but i thank drab majesty into taking us to an imaginary case of "what if they did go to where they were promosed?"
I feel like it’s all about promoting and how you present your group. In other words these guys would be world famous. Let’s get them out there! 7 year old song and I’m blasting it like it’s brand new yfm
Feels like a long continuous thunderstorm filling the black sky with purple lighting and the smell we all remember from our childhoods playing in the rain
3 years now listening to this masterpiece, it never gets old and never will...the perfection of the atmosphere, melody and sounds resonates deep, like living in an 80s realm I know I’ve never lived and never existed but still it’s too damn real to be just an illusion if that makes sense. Love and respect to Drab Majesty.
Born in the tail later years of the wonderful 80s decade, I can still respect the appreciation! Wish I was born in the 70s. Early 90s had some amazing music too. Later 2000s really disappointed hard. We need to revive emotion in our music...wet ass something (WAP) is just gross and not very resonant with deeper emotion of the nation.
same! i can't get tired of them, this album especially is wow! the atmospheres are so dense, almost like you could touch them in every track! love the alien concepts too!
Having been born in 86, I didn’t get to truly experience the magic of the 80’s. I can’t thank Deb and Mona enough for giving me the opportunity to experience such an oddly nostalgic feeling for a time I didn’t get to experience in a truly meaningful way. I can remember being a young child in 1990 and hearing Enjoy the Silence blasting from my big sister’s room and loving it. How my sister must have felt to have a synth wave group like Depeche Mode to fall in love with, I now have the same in Drab Majesty. Thank you Drab Majesty for making the 2020’s the 80’s I never got to experience. I’m eternally grateful. 👽💜

I can’t stop listening to this song. Once I read these comments and found out what the actual lyrics were about…boy did it bring me down a rabbit hole!
I love the cinematography/acting in this music video. Looking in the mirror at himself, the 2 debs stacked on top of each other, siting in white plastic chairs gesturing dramatically. The “monster” deb shrouded in white, strangely moving about and aggressively leaning towards the camera. All the while in a strobe light manner the screen cutting black multiple times a second adding obscurity and other elements. I’d say Drab’s best 2 music videos are this one and then Out of sequence, was amazing as well.
I like his hand gestures when he is explaining to you things about life. Those gestures cary the weight and one should listen to his explanations. He captured the essence of living.
I keep coming back to this video because it's so beautiful, and honestly such a beautiful tribute to the lives lost to Heaven's Gate. Deb Demure is an absolute masterpiece of an artist.

This is extremely original due to the fact that I don't truly see much music about stuff like this. Cool sound btw.
Very fond of the "Do's" infinity projection, and 90's vintage look. Someone with the evolutionary level of above human put a lot of thought into this video and album.
Anyone that can’t hear the difference and just says to me; “oh very 80’s” doesn’t get it. AT ALL!!!! This is one of the most incredible bands to ever walk the earth.
This song and video makes me feel like my previous life was someone in the 80's who died in a car accident while listening to this song even though it wasn't released yet
Stop fcking liking this music cause they wear goth attire holyshit, like the music for the music lol. I’d still love these guys if they fucking dressed up in suits
@@michaelking2857 Like Cocteau Twins, Joy Division, ASF and Martin Dupont. It's the sound not the fashion. Check out a 1982 "Goth" at a Bauhaus concert. The fans wore Pink, suits and tons of other handmade DIY and colorful things. People focus too much on defining Goth on the bands alone when the bands reject being called Goth.
This is f****** mesmerizing...this song, cold souls and not just a name has been my poetry inspiration on my ig. This is the best music i've come across in the last 25 years. It slowly tears the soul from you, rips it apart and pieces it back together💞
I love how they embodied the sentiment around Heaven’s Gate. Sadness for the families of the 39. But also a sense of empathy and compassion for people who followed their convictions via ritual. That’s not to romanticize what happened either. Like the song embodies everything. Humans have sought answers for as long as we’ve existed. “Eternal point of view”…

When you walked alone to leave
your life at home
You really wanted to die
And if you hoped to hold the key
to eternity
You really wanted to die
Can’t count your blessings
saying goodbye
Did you really watch
your desires resign?

And when you fell to Earth and
lost the love to love
You really wanted to try
Can’t count your blessings
saying goodbye

Did they beam you up

And when you came to turn the
hands on the sands of time
You really wanted to die
And then you showed them
how you felt
It was so hard to break the spell
You just wanted to die
Can’t count your blessings
saying goodbye
Really just a roll of the dice
When truth or lies
will make you cry
Really doesn’t make a lot of sense

When truth or lies
will make you cry
Really doesn’t make a lot of sense
The end we’ll all be cleansed

80s vibe in the song and video are super on point. Love it!!
I love this group omg
Just put this band in the rock and roll hall of Fame they good
Omg I was totally getting Heavens Gate vibes from this. I cant believe I was right.
I CAN NOT STOP WATCHING THIS VIDEO
Me too. especially around 4.00 with the guitar and all. So fucking epic
Amazing, spine-chilling, soul-touching, beautiful, sad, addictive, life-changing, the whole album is a true masterpiece 💜
I love it more and more each time I hear them
+Christopher Martinez: Couldn't Agree with you more fellow 'new waver.'
Had the pleasure to host DB for a show in Italy last year. This band left me speachless and I couldn't do without their music from then. Unique.
Fico muuito Feliz e me sinto maravilhosamente bem ouvindo Drab Majesty !!
Very fond of the "Do's" infinity projection, and 90's vintage look. Someone with the evolutionary level of above human put a lot of thought into this video and album.
This comment.
this is more 80s than 90s
@@ΝΞΘηλΝΤΟΜ they are replicating Applewhites vides from the 90s.
@@blurofserenityblue Yeah but the sounds are reminiscent and pay tribute to the 80s
Thank you Drab Majesty for this beautiful sounds.
Easily one of the best artists of the past decade.
Drab Majesty is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. Love the old school sound and vibe!
how does he accomplish to bring me back to 1981, even if he wasnt even born back then???
Anyone that can’t hear the difference and just says to me; “oh very 80’s” doesn’t get it. AT ALL!!!! This is one of the most incredible bands to ever walk the earth.
This song and video makes me feel like my previous life was someone in the 80's who died in a car accident while listening to this song even though it wasn't released yet
Now this is true modern goth music, not that Marilyn Manson stuff. 😭🖤 love you Drab!
Stop fcking liking this music cause they wear goth attire holyshit, like the music for the music lol. I’d still love these guys if they fucking dressed up in suits
Marilyn Manson is industrial...
Sabina Sas Marilyn Manson never made goth music. More of Industrial Metal
Nothing triggers people into "goth" music more than Marilyn Manson.
How does a band that's irrelevant to goth make people so mad. Lol
Instantly, I am immensely submersed into a hypnotic state of mind in this wave of pure blissful sounds!
These guys are just amazing, it's like a dreamy goth.
Drab Majesty's songs are very much like the 80's new wave bands. It's rare nowadays to make and have songs like this.
Loving this band right now.
thanks ;)
Thank you
Thanks 🖤
Cuando caminabas solo para dejar
tu vida en casa
Realmente querías morir
Y si esperabas tener la llave
de la eternidad
Realmente querías morir
No puedes contar tus bendiciones
diciendo adiós
¿Realmente viste
renunciar a tus deseos?
En el caso de un ojo errante
Y cuando caíste a la tierra y
perdiste el amor de amar
De verdad querías intentarlo
No puedes contar tus bendiciones
diciendo adiós
39 a propósito
¿Te transportaron
a las luces del cielo?
Si pudieras hacer una polaroid
de tu vida, ¿llorarías?
¿Les harías mirar
en el blanco de tus ojos?
(Punto de vista eterno)
Y cuando llegaras a girar las
las manecillas de las arenas del tiempo
Realmente querías morir
Y entonces les mostraste
cómo te sentías
Fue tan difícil romper el hechizo
Sólo querías morir
No puedes contar tus bendiciones
The snippets of Drab singing with the repeated plastic chair is so accurate to Applewhite's farewell video. After watching the Heavens Gate documentary this video is even more awesome
what's that doc called?
@@twinatoms just watch the heaven's gate "final call"
Met the lads in Durham, nice dudes. This song continues to blow my mind. If you read this, a random stranger wishes you well (me)
Jordan Yergler thank you my friend
@@CrimsonTomb That thumbs up was from me a while ago. I still revisit this song. I still wish you well.
@@weeewooo777 thanks, same here
@@CrimsonTomb Peace upon you, brother
I love the VHS reconstruction of Applewhite sitting in the plastic chair. His videos and writings are one hell of a ride. Great video and artist!😊
