Ben Woods here, please let me chime in everybody. To all the people that complain that this is not 'basic' or that I'm showing off... I'm not showing off, I'm simply showing - I'm sharing my knowledge. As the title says; "Basic Flamenco Techniques". Not beginning techniques, not easy-beginner techniques. These are the basic building blocks of Flamenco guitar playing... the common techniques involved in Flamenco guitar playing. Before you can play Flamenco, you need to have a mastery of these. Flamenco is a language and these techniques are like words you need to form ideas. Yes they are difficult, Flamenco itself is extremely hard. Practice slowly. And to those of you that say I'm going through it too fast? Rewind and play again as needed, its a video. Also now youtube has the option to slow down this video (hit the gear icon). Don't be a pussy, step yourself up. I was push to do this at 13 and I sucked but when I finally got one song sounding half way decent with no mistakes it rocketed my freestyle and chord playing and especially riff playing. Now after 40 years of forgotten lessons, I have returned to learning and the thing I remember most are the flam. Well that and bloody fingertips. Lol.
As a classical guitarist I can say what looks impossibly hard can become easier and acchived with correct practice and dedication never give up and start with simpler things .... you cant play at such high level in 3 or 4 years it takes a lot of time
You can get pretty good in four years though, so believe in yourself and stay dedicated. But also be aware that the people you look up to have probably been playing 10+ years
Ben is right these are all the techniques needed. All you have to do to get as good as Ben is, practice 18 hours a day for the next 87945 years. It's almost too easy.
I've taught a lot of people. From my experience I'd say all you really need for mastery is one or two hours a week and between 7 and 15 years depending on your mind (eg age, have you learned another instrument etc). The times passing anyway. You might as well. You'll find after the first 2-3 years the practise gets a lot easier. It's much more fun when you can do a little.

I am an experienced guitarist. I started as a kid with simple acoustic stuff and then moved on in my teens to the typical rock and metal. I went on to classical guitar because I loved the style and music. I mention all of this to demonstrate I have a good background in the instrument. So when I say this is without a doubt the best video I have ever seen in regards to the basics of the flamenco style I want it to be taken in the context of my past experience. Don't get me wrong I am not a professional musician, but honestly this is one of the best videos I have seen on flamenco technique and I don't understand why so many people find it confusing. Maybe they are new or they are unwilling to practice as this instruction is simple to follow. I have really gotten into flamenco during the lockdown and this video has helped me to understand the technique in a way that few other videos have managed. Thank you to the man in the video.
Thank you to all commentators. I haven't had such a good laugh in a long time. Just humorous reality checkers here Ben. You're a great player. Thank you for this great tutorial.
Adam Lewis I KNow! I've played for about 25 years, and then picked up flamenco and nylon string. And believe me, I felt really lame at first, but was determined to go on and progress. Now I'm already enjoying it too. :-)
+Adam Lewis hey guys! I like you guys after 25 years of writing songs using the basic first position chords, the occasional drop D, and power chords with distortion I simply got tired of myself - even playing live was becoming a bore, and I just wasn't feeling it. Bands simply cannot be relied upon, so I came here to YT to find new ways of expression. Flamenco seems very advanced with the right hand stuff but I feel like I am learning a brand new instrument with percussive techniques, and flamenco.. glad to see I am not the only one! Oh, and I don't know how I ever got on without a loop pedal before - that thing is life changing!
wooow finally after 20 yrs i found a Flamenco teacher (i play Jazz Fusion/Funk/RnB) (no need to go to live in Spain in Andalusia 4 a couple of yrs) 🏯🏯🏯 it's amazing what flamenco playas are able to do with just a guitar 💪🔥💪
I have literally seen hundreds of videos and bought more than 10 methods to learn flamenco and I can tell you that in this very short video you manage to summarize and capture the essence of flamenco techniques ... This is for me the best introduction video to flamenco guitar on UA-cam ... Thanks man for the inspiration. Cheers from Belgium :)
I found this lesson incredibly helpful. It was one of the best ones i found on youtube. I also watched some others to get a more rounded view and hear other opinions. I've been practicing 2 of the Rasgueados in this lesson for about 5 minutes every day for the last 2 months and i'm really getting good at them. It's sounding great. The key with learning new techniques and advancing as a guitarist is practicing Every Day. You can do it. But be honest with yourself. If you're not ready for these techniques, build up your skills some more so that you are ready. It's a life long journey. Don't be in a rush (:
He nailed the basic, dont expect to be that fast, just work on it slowly. he just displayed how it sound when mastered the basic. Many "basic" can sound advance behind a master guitarist :)
If this was a basic scuba diving lesson it would go something like: "All right, you'll learn how to dive no problem, just watch and learn from this submarine."
Only thing is this is not a lesson or a tutorial. It is just an illustration of these guitar techniques and how they are done. Nowhere does he say that you will learn how to do them or play the guitar.
Thank you. I’m learning from scratch and am noticeably missing technique. I’m playing by ear and I’m getting good but knowing what I’m supposed to be doing is gonna take me miles. Thank you again. I’ve been looking for this kinda video for a year
This video is intimidating and inspiring at the same time. I definitely want to see more of Ben's playing. I've been wanting to learn some flamenco techniques for quite awhile. Now I just need to get some acrylic nails.
@Eliott Lederer Yes I did. How about you Eliott ? Provide a link to your channel or website or whatever medium you use, where it shows you are better. I would like to learn more from you.
Im playing guitar for couple of years and trying to push myself to learn flamenco guitar. With this video and those techniques I certain that I will learn this flaming style!!! :) Thank you.
Great video. The only thing that people should remember is that the picado you show is actually Classical and not flamenco. You have straight fingers with rest strokes, which works very well, but at higher speeds is not as efficient as traditional picado technique. The fingers should be at a 45 degree angle bent at the knuckle. Watching this head on means all you see is the knuckles moving up and down and the rest of the fingers disappear because of the angular bend. This way you can reach much faster speeds and you don't have to change your hand position from tremolo, arpeggios or rasgueado so you can have smoother transitions. If you watch some of the greats like paco de lucia, rafael cortes, paco pena and jason mcguire they all adopt this angular 45 degree bend at the knuckles. THis allows them to seamlessly transition between strumming rasgueado and picado. The theoretical explanation is that you change your finger to a shorter lever by having at this angle. Therefore you end up plucking from the knuckle joint rather than from where the finger starts. The shorter distance thus equates to a faster potential speed one can reach assuming it is clean with good technique and nail shape. Cheers for the great video :)
gimmeagig You have many transferable skills and a lot of experience with a guitar anyways, the transition will only require some work in some of the techniques and for you to practice it.
I love the creative frustrating comments :D But flamenco is easier than u might imagine in the first place. It's always one pattern. practice this pattern every day and u will see how fast it can be learned if you stick to it :)
Technique is a really hard part of flamenco and very important. But it's not even the close to being hardest. There's so much shit in flamenco and you overcome the precedent obstacles as soon as you meet more difficult ones :D But it's a really fun process if you don't give up :)
wow ! I have a flamenco guitar, cant play it but it is a work of art...made in Spain, out of Sycamore of all things. Apparently it was traditional for the Gypsies (i hope that is not a racisit term, if so apologies) to use any wood they could find for the guitars and sycamore is a common species. It is blond blonde, quality every bit as good as my Martins. Love it. I did have a video years ago and learned a few licks, I remember palming it in a percussive fashion. Cant wait to learn some techniques. So sad that Ben is gone, I was lucky to have survived cancer, so sad, RIP Ben, you are missed. take care everyone.
I picked up an acoustic and got finger style down in about a month. I will be using this video for the next month or so I imagine to do the same thing. :) Thank you for explaining these techniques in great detail! 🙏🖤
Ben is quickly going over the different Techniques. If you've been playing awhile you should know by now, YOU GO AS SLOW AS YOU NEED TO GO TO MASTER EACH TECHNIQUE. Speed comes with control and mastery of the technique. That is why you work with a metronome.
You my brother, are brilliant. A true virtuoso! The world lost a great, beautiful mind and a brilliant virtuoso when we lost you. I am in total awe and respect brother, respect always and forever
That's why I laugh at people who have their favorite guitarist(s) and prematurely label them as the "best ever", or that "he can play every style". Flamenco technique alone would and DOES give most of our favorite guitar heroes a headache. Even the likes of Al di Meola or John Mclaughlin never bothered to learn it, and instead let Paco de Lucia do his thing. On the other hand, many Flamenco guitarists can't improvise the same way Jazz guitarists are able to, nor can they sweep pick and tap the same way Metal guitarists can. Basically, there are too many styles and genres, hence why I always laugh at people who claim that someone is "the best guitarist ever". Yeah, no. For that to be a factual statement, that guitarist would have to master EVERY genre. Most already fail at Jazz or Flamenco. Insisting on calling someone the best is simply personal bias.
depends how it's said. 'best guitarist ever' i agree is too broad a statement whereas 'best guitarist to me' makes it sound less like stating a generalized fact and more like their subjective opinion. i still think it's always better to just say 'my favourite guitarist is "insert guitar player" and compliment their skill and talent in a number of other ways rather than go claiming who is best. there is no best like there is no perfect.
You're contradicting yourself. If no guitarists masters all genres, then a guitarist doesn't have to master all genres to be the best guitarist. (He or she only has to be a tiny bit better than others at the things the others are doing.)
Thanks for the lesson. As long as I do it slowly, no problemo. It's the speed, that's the problem. But it's the flying fingers on the left hand and whirling fingers on the right hand, that's what makes flamenco sound so fantastic.
Thanks for expanding my knowledge of Flamenco. I can't wait to move on the alzapua technique, and could watch that forever. Love your stealthy guitar style, and how at any moment theres an element of imminent danger.
Otto Drone I added this video to my favorites so I could watch the Alzapua one over and over again! I hope to master it as well, good luck to you and your guitar endeavors.
i just need some few decades of patience and practice -_- ...... i've been watching guitar tutorials on youtube for more than a year ..... ended up as an expert on PATIENCE & PRACTICE ... but zero on the guitar
when you show every technique from the start of the video, it brought me tears becuz it feels impossible... i wonder how long it'll take me to play this cleanly if i start my practice now
A lot of commenters are expecting something simple and easy. Well, it's not. He presents the basics quite clearly. You can slow YT vids down, study what he does, get the idea. But then it's practice^2.
Thugzilla learn a simple fingerstyle song (classical gas etc) and play it slowly over and over in your spare time until you can get fast with it, it'll be worth it when you can play something you enjoy c:
What a terrific introduction from such an amazing musician. I now see why they must use nylon strings. I tried that hand wave on steel strings and about rubbed the skin off...so I think these techniques-for the most part-are specific to the type of guitar. But I will still try and learn from it. Thanks!
It's really a shame that flamenco isn't up there with jazz in music schools, it's quite impressive, I'm glad metal is at least adopting some the techniques finally

Beautiful playing! After 17 years playing guitar I've just started to learn classical & flamenco. its almost like starting afresh!

+Ilya Seleznyov Thanks, I am comfortable with 45 degree, but I always thought I was doing it wrong.
Thanks this was the motivation I needed to go back to studying

I would make you younger if I could my friend!! Im 22!

MusingsofaJay You right, age dont matter!
I'm a bass player as well and playing a nylon guitar is really comfortable
gimmeagig You have many transferable skills and a lot of experience with a guitar anyways, the transition will only require some work in some of the techniques and for you to practice it.
I love the creative frustrating comments :D
But flamenco is easier than u might imagine in the first place. It's always one pattern. practice this pattern every day and u will see how fast it can be learned if you stick to it :)
Still difficult, my fingers' bones are clicking painfully
Uhmmm...what kind of flamenco are u talkin about
True. Flamenco is impressive, but once you know technics, you can do anything in E major key and it will sound awsome.
Technique is a really hard part of flamenco and very important. But it's not even the close to being hardest. There's so much shit in flamenco and you overcome the precedent obstacles as soon as you meet more difficult ones :D But it's a really fun process if you don't give up :)
My biggest problems are the Fingernails :D
Annoying and interfering with other hobbies.
Maybe I need to try these metal fingerpicks.
As someone looking to get into this style of music, this is a great overview of these techniques. Thanks!
When Ben Woods says something is "hard" or "takes lots of practice", keep in mind those both translate to "impossible for mere mortals".

This is pure clear and straigthforward technique demonstration. Better than a lot of 1 hour lessons.
Ben is quickly going over the different Techniques. If you've been playing awhile you should know by now, YOU GO AS SLOW AS YOU NEED TO GO TO MASTER EACH TECHNIQUE. Speed comes with control and mastery of the technique. That is why you work with a metronome.

Incog2k6 Robby Krieger could play flamenco
This comment is the only sane thing here
depends how it's said.
Unless it's Jimi Hendrix
You're contradicting yourself. If no guitarists masters all genres, then a guitarist doesn't have to master all genres to be the best guitarist. (He or she only has to be a tiny bit better than others at the things the others are doing.)

Thanks for the lesson. As long as I do it slowly, no problemo. It's the speed, that's the problem. But it's the flying fingers on the left hand and whirling fingers on the right hand, that's what makes flamenco sound so fantastic.
