The reservoir leaks because of two reasons: 1. The rubber gasket on the cap is hard 2. The hoses have deteriorated and the non adjustable clamps have given the ghost The reservoir itself doesn't crack from my experience. Replace the gasket on the cap and the clamps with worm clamps
@@Arsenalusa nope, but the perma clamp on the bottom of the hose failed too. cut that off carefully, and it turns out that the hardline that bolts to the rack has a lip on it too. so, reattached hose with worm clamp down there too and its bone dry. Its been 4 years since? ALSO, replace the rubber gasket on the reservoir cap, its as hard as a rock my now and can leak
I just bought an m3, checking the engine bay out i was like "where the hell is the PS bottle" I agree the locstion is stupid but at least its not massively difficult to work with.
Thanks for the Great video. My 750li leaks from the passenger side wheel and ALL of the power steering fluid leaks within 4 min. WTH could it be. It's gotta b a rotten hose huh. It's not leaking from beneath the reservoir but from the opposite side
Great vid, also the dual shot when bleeding. Doing mine tomorrow as part of DIY Inspection II :-) I must say your fluid did look pretty brownish after bleeding, was there still a lot of old fluid in the system or was it optical warping cause of youtube ? Trying to get as much out as possible of mine. Disconnecting hose at pump then turning the wheels, probably on the ground to get more friction to get the torsion bar in the PAS mechanism to open up all circuits. Maybe not necessary, just not sure how much force the wheel needs to activate hydraulic assist. I guess with wheels in the air there isn't much friction so hardly any steering input force to bend the torsion thingy so possible then only the direct return circuit will remain opened. Not sure on that, learning as I go ;-)
Thanks! You can bleed more fluid out of the steering rack with the hoses off and the car on. Be warned, with the car on, the fluid will pump out quickly and get messy. Just make sure to thoroughly bleed the system when you're done.
Shahzeboy 1 I have a 330ci as well and I have a slight ATF leak it takes like a quart every 3 weeks but I’m looking to fix it in the next few weeks. I just need to buy a new resovior

Dang Sean! I was scanning around for some guidance on a possible steering system leak, and I STUMBLED upon your DIY SMG cooling hose...Can you tell me how to do it? This has been on my list after replacing the SMG hydraulic unit (ouch $$) a couple of years ago. I wanna protect the new one by running a cooling line. Yours looks awesome. Can you help me? thanks!
Sorry, I'm just seeing this now. You basically route a 2" high temp hose from the bumper to the SMG pump. You'll have to get creative on how you route and run it but it's pretty straight forward. LMK if you have more questions.
Hi where you disconnect the line with that push release clip, I have tried pushing down and pulling the hose it doesn't wan't to budge and your video cut short that bit, any ideas on this or tips?

I noticed that he pulled UP on the hose while pushing the ring down at the same time. Then push down hard using the 90 degree needle noise pliers. Maybe you’ve already done this so sorry if it didn’t work.
my e46 diesel has a leak underneath the power steering tank........i can see where the leak comes from please assist

the reservoir has a built in filter. its recommended to change it.

You shouldn't start the engine when bleeding the power steering, with car jacked up turn lock to lock a few times first

Greg Eiselin e36 m3 here and same location. It's pretty stupid. As much as hate e90s, at least their reservoir is right on top
ZF is an OE part…. That’s who makes the parts.
Also you are supposed to use Hydraulic fluid for the Power steering system.
Hey I have a manual transmission e46 but can I use automatic transmission fluid for power steering also
Personally I’d use new hose clamps instead of using the old clamps

This kit on fcp euro comes with hose clamps that are the wrong size. So just be careful and use the old clamps.

Did your engine turn off before this happened? Our e46 M3 turned off on the freeway and there's a bad power steering leak.
Also, dude, your ps fluid is filthy, if you do this, drain the fluid or at least flush it...

There's a different between Transmission fluid and power steering fluid , don't mix
Yes but this is the fluid that many people recommend and run on this car, instead of going with the expensive OE fluid.

The oem is dex 2 fluid, transmission takes dexron 3. Both will take dex 6 fluid without any problems.

It's a little tricky. You can push down on the outer clip with a "V" (need nose pliers horizontal) and then push up on the hose.

Already tried, I even bought the removal tool to release it but to no avail. I had to dremel it off to remove.
