    Thought I would share this
Don't use 'power steering fluid' on an E46
Look on the reservoir filler cap to decide if you need ATF or CHF, it will tell you.
TIS manual states ATF is part number 8122 9400 272 - Trade name "BMW automatic transmission fluid" . This equates to BMW ATF D2 (not D3) and so D2 is the correct stuff - perhaps D doesn't stand for Dexron in this instance, seeing as Dexron is a fluid originally made for GM.
CHF part number is 8122 9407 758 trade name Pentosin CHF 11s

I really appreciate your videos. Thank you so much for them.
One thing that occurred to me - when attaching any of the new hoses, you used silicone paste. Which, like you said is probably fine. For anyone squeamish though - one could lubricate the hose-end with a little of the ATF which the PS system uses.
IE a good rule of thumb could be - to lubricate any new hose(s) and seal(s) with the fluid that normally runs through whatever system is being worked on. Right?

The colour of the O-ring denotes the type of rubber it is made from, and its application. The subject is quite complicated, and I’m going to over simplify it in this comment, however for example:
Black O-rings: are generally for water and air, and operated in medium temperatures and pressure.
Yellow O-rings: are for gas application, with increased pressure.
Green O-rings: are for oils with extreme pressures and high temperatures.
DDD = Different rubbers react Differently to Different fluids. ;)

Great DIY video! Watched it several times, just one pointer that would make this project easier- the Lisle tool is a must, your right! But you don’t need to remove the headlight, the top line is easily extracted from the top, and the bottom line is easily removed from under the car, much much easier than removing the headlight especially for the e46 owners that have headlight washer contraptions to contend with.

The pressure hose hunt is doing my head in. I can only find hoses for LHD. RealOEM isn’t really helpful on this because 1; the picture is somewhat generic, doesn’t show whether it’s for LF-20 or LF-30 and 2; the part numbers don’t show it’s for which pump.
I hope the E46 community can share some insight on this.

Huge smile as I (we) also do the put it back as Factory thing. We too were puzzled with the REIN design of the hose. My thoughts at first they just 'swedged' it incorrectly.

  • @poodlescone9700

You got lucky the plastic hose clamp locks on your hoses are intact. The plastic deteriorates on some old hoses and it requires a dremel to cut the hose clamping mechanism off.
The job is easier if you do it with any other maintenance job where the alternator comes out. That allows access from the top.

Hey guys, i have a problem with my e46 m54b25. My engine does a strange sound but i cant really locate it and find the reason. It sounds like a high pulsing tone like on this videos:
    my car: ua-cam.com/video/kzx0Bgm_D9A/v-deo.html
    other guys car: ua-cam.com/video/ZZfxCLt5ygc/v-deo.html
the direction of the sound is from the throttle, but i cant image that the throttle or the idle controll valve can cause this sound
i thought the DISA was the problem and i changed the DISA, but the sound was still there.
i would be very thankful for every tips and help.

Hi. I can't find the episode where you talked in depth about ATF power steering fluid varieties. Have you switched from dexron III to a VI? I have a couple power steering questions for you. I am going to be replacing the power steering pump on 2003 e46 325i. Have watched your DIY on this several times and feel confident about doing it. My questions are about the fluid. When the car manifested the issue I found I had low fluid - turned out the hose from the resevoir to cooler had rotted, car had set for awhile and the guys at autozone had sold me the CHF stuff so I had changed the hose and reservoir and filled it up with that. I have since learned I probably don't want to use that stuff. My plan is to suck that stuff out of the reservoir and what ever comes out of the lines from the pump when I change it. Will that suffice? Also, once i have it put back together and get the fluid in should I turn the wheels lock to lock with the car engine off or with it running? Some things i have heard is that you should turn the pulley by hand so that fluid gets in the pump before firing it up? I really appreciate all the videos and info, you have been a tremendous help

Thanks again Jason, I ordered the same kit and was able to complete the job today. I had leaking from the hoses attached to the reservoir and pressure lines. I purchased the removal tool first and was able to remove both hoses without taking off the light cluster. Hope you are doing well.

The hoses at the top you used the tool for, can you just cut the lines and use regular hose clamps?
