Weird Al is an institution. In the music industry they say you know you’ve made it when Weird Al does one of your songs. He’s got a catalog spanning 4 decades. Note the number of views his videos have, he has a huge fan base.
Not just a catalog that spans four decades...he's one of the less than five artists who have had a hit on the charts in four decades (soon to be five, no doubt)...
Weird Al has never done a parody without the original artists' permission. He is completely respectful about the whole process, and does everything to mimic as much of the original videos possible while "quirking" them with his own silly personality. His is the ultimate expression of the phrase "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"😊
He didn't actually get Coolio's permission for parodying Gangsta Paradise, he had permission from the studio from my understanding but not from Coolio. I remember that was the whole issue with Al and Coolio for a while, after that he made it a thing to get permission from the singer for sure and not just the studio.
@@johnaskins638Correct, but Al understood Coolio had given permission. After that, he has made it a point to personally speak with each artist himself directly.
I see a lot of people pointing out Seth Green, but they seem to be missing the deeper cut. Sure, he's a famous actor, but another thing he's well known for is his massive action figure collection. He's one of the premier action figure collectors in the US and he's put that collection to use on a little show he created called Robot Chicken.
You're the first black person I've known to watch this and Miss Key & Peele at the beginning.🤦🏾♀️ Conversely, you're the only black person to recognize Seth Green. I know him from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But he was also in Austin Powers.🤷🏾♀️ His parodies of Michael Jackson's Beat It and are legendary. Michael went so far as to let him use the sets.👍🏾🙆🏾♀️🎵🇺🇦
I read that when Weird Al asked Michael Jackson's people where they filmed "Bad" so they could film "Fat", they told him that they were reshooting some footage, and were renting the place for 5 days, but only needed one. They paid the rent for Weird Al's video.
Some of the best Weird Al songs: Living with a Hernia, Party in the CIA, Ebay, Foil, and Tacky, just to name a few. Hardware is not a parody, it's an original. Weird Al can spit bars!
I can understand why you aren't sure how you feel about this one. But Weird Al didn't use his parodies to disrespect an artist or their lyrics. When this song came out Chamillionaire said he liked it.
The guy in the background from the middle to the end, dancing, is Donny Osmond. People that grew up in there that era know him as an Osmond Brother… The heartthrob of the Osmond brothers when they were teenagers… And they were like the “safe “band for young girls to see in the 70s. Very religious Mormons, they had a big family and all of them were involved in singing entertainment and very very popular. That’s why it’s so funny that he’s doing the background in this ha ha ha. Good sense of humor about himself.
To really appreciate the effort that he puts into these, watch Weird Al's Amish Paradise, parody of Gangsta's Paradise. Listen to Coolio first, so you will recognize how every effect, movement, phrase and note are echoed in Weird Al's production.

Weird Al Yankovic is brillliant. He has been doing this since the late 70s, and he puts so much work into his parodies. Also, the "gangsters" were Key and Peele in an early role. You know, in addition to nerd king Seth Green and the ledgendary Donny Osmond.
He is American, born and raised in California. He is something of a pop culture icon with his main claim to fame being musical parodies, 5 of which won him Grammy Awards. The guy you were asking about was Seth Green, the other guy dancing behind Weird Al was famed singer Donny Osmond, the guys in the car are comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the lady that got the surge protector was comedian Judy Tenuta.
It's all about being a nerd. It's always been considered a compliment to have Al do a parody of your music. Madonna actually requested him to do one of her songs. He's considered the king of parody. It's funny when someone watches a parody song without knowing what it's a parody of beforehand. Al puts a lot of well known (and lesser known) people in his videos. The guys in the car are Key and Peele, the guy in the action figure thing is Seth Green, the dancing guy is Donnie Osmond, and the "mom" is Judy Tenuta (comedian). All the things he references are typically "nerd" stuff, some extremely so (like JavaScript & Klingon). He probably got most famous early on with his parodies of Michael Jackson's "Bad" and "Beat it" - Weird Al made "Fat" and "Eat It" - or maybe Joan Jett's "I Love Rock n' Roll" from which Al made "I Love Rocky Road". You really need to watch the original videos to get the full effect of the parodies, though.
Associating someone's surname with assumptions about their English language capacity takes me back to the 1970s. Doing it in this day and age is absolutely baffling.
The guy you asked about is actor Seth Greene. You missed Key and Peeps as the two guys riding in the low rider. Donnie Osmond also makes an appearance.
This is not the best song to start the Weird Al journey. Apart from that, you must always react to the original first to really appreciate the parody! I recommend: „Bad“ (Michael Jackson) and „Fat“ (Weird Al), „Gangsta‘s Paradise“ (Coolio) and „Amish Paradise“ (Weird Al) and ultimately „Smells like teen spirit“ (Nirvana) and „Smells like Nirvana“ (Weird Al)!
Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and Weird Al's "Eat It". Al copied MJ's video almost exactly, even had some of the same people in it. MJ helped Al with it, so that went a long way to making it great.
