  • 1. What is engineered hardwood flooring?
Engineered hardwood flooring is a type of flooring made from layers of wood veneer and a substrate material that is designed to mimic the look of traditional solid hardwood flooring while offering additional benefits such as increased stability and durability.
The top layer, or veneer, is made of real wood and can vary in thickness depending on the manufacturer and the specific product. The veneer is glued to a substrate layer made of high-density fiberboard or plywood, which provides stability and helps prevent warping and movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity.
Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed using a variety of methods, including floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation. It is available in a wide range of wood species, colors, and finishes, making it a popular choice for homeowners and designers who want the look and feel of real wood flooring with added durability and stability.
    2. What is prefinished hardwood flooring?
Prefinished hardwood flooring is a type of flooring that has already been sanded, stained, and sealed at the factory before it is installed in a home or commercial space. This means that the finish is already applied to the flooring before it is delivered to the customer, as opposed to unfinished hardwood flooring which requires sanding, staining, and sealing on-site after installation.
Prefinished hardwood flooring is available in a wide range of wood species, colors, and finishes, making it easy for homeowners and designers to find a product that suits their style and needs. It is also more convenient to install than unfinished hardwood flooring, as there is no need to wait for the finish to dry before using the space.
Prefinished hardwood flooring typically has a more durable finish than on-site finishes, as the factory-controlled environment allows for more consistent and precise application of the finish. Additionally, prefinished hardwood flooring may come with warranties that cover the finish and the structural integrity of the flooring.
    3. What is sand and finish onsite hardwood?
Sand and finish onsite hardwood flooring refers to the process of installing unfinished hardwood flooring in a space and then sanding, staining, and sealing the flooring on-site after installation. This process allows for more customization in terms of color and finish, as the flooring can be stained and finished to match the specific design and style of the space.
During the sanding process, a contractor will use a machine to remove the top layer of the hardwood, which can even out imperfections, scratches, and dents. After sanding, the contractor will apply a stain or sealer to the hardwood, which can enhance the natural color of the wood or change it to a different color altogether. Finally, a topcoat or finish is applied to the hardwood to protect it from wear and tear.
Sand and finish onsite hardwood flooring requires more time and effort than prefinished hardwood flooring, as the sanding, staining, and sealing processes can take several days or longer to complete. However, it can offer more customization options and a more seamless look, as there are no beveled edges or seams between boards like there can be with prefinished hardwood flooring.

Hi there, Thank you for your videos. We are removing our kitchen cabinets and replacing them with new cabinets. We're also replacing our floors with new prefinished solid 3/4" hardwood flooring. Should we install the cabinets on top of the flooring or install the cabinets first and leave a gap around the front of the cabinets for expansion? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Great question; you can sometimes install cabinets on top of actual wood. Our best suggestion is to read the installation requirements from the manufacturer where you purchase your wood flooring and see what is required to maintain your warranties. Everyone is different, and this video is giving general guidelines, always best to read what your flooring supplier requires. Good luck 🍀🍀
