For those who whinge about value propositions and pricing of the HR-V hybrid, look up the indicative pricing and equipment of the upcoming Kia Niro hybrid and Nissan Qashqai ePower, both will be north of 45K driveaway. Sorry, no leather seats, no sun roof. The base Niro hybrid only has halogen headlights, serious?! The only true hybrid SUV in the same segment with similar equipment level but cheaper than the HR-V is the Toyota C-HR Koba. Toyota probably can't hold the current price for too long since everything is going up in price.

Plastic interior, no power seats, forget leather, only seats 4, tiny 300 liter luggage space and less than 100kw power train all for a measly $45,000, absolute bargain.

Best economy so Far. This car is heavily underrated by all the reviewers out there. And its a Honda.
Heavy petrol head here, first the Qashqai (that thing has so less space then HRV in the backseats its just a blasphemy, i'm a 190cm and i repeatedly hit the front seat (adjusted for me since thats the way to be tested) every single time, while in the HRV i have at least 20cm or more, it's like in a Luxury sedan space!
-i drive tested many of them before i bought one, from the likes of CX30, Toyota RAV4 ,Corolla Cross, CH-R Renault Austral, Alfa Tonale, Hyundai Tucson, Qashqai etc.. all of them hybrids except the CX30 186 Skyactiv X.
-The HR-V was by Far the most refined (the Civic and ZR-V , CR-V are the only ones better though) , it has alot of space, noone will mention the luggage space beneath the back seats, which i would say is more then 100l , since there is a big hole underneat them (which are also magic and can be raised). Space on the rear seats is like in Mercedes S Class, nothing i mean nothing comes close from those cars mentioned above. The space behind in the trunk is not really 320 liters, its is far more and also if you count the volume space that can go up till glass its plus, and not to forget there is a large socket in the trunk aswell, + its a flat space when you put your seats down, campers can sleep here with 180cm length .
      Also Few things to mention
-The fuel economy is so great, in city around 2.8-3l without special treat, 3.8l during 100kmh, 5.5 during 120kmh, on 130kmh it is around 6.9 (the CX30 is better on highways)
-The performance is around 8.8 to 0-100kmh alot quicker then stated, and is faster them most of the cars in this segment to 80, only the Hyundai Tucson HEV with 260hp feels quicker.
-The sound isolation and especialy the comfort is AMAZING, PLEASE DO NOT listen to those reviewers out there complaining about the noise, they don't have a CLUE what they are talking about. Maybe they drive Porsche taycans far too often or i they just hit the pedal till the medal all the time...
Only and i mean ONLY if you 100% throttle heavy foot accelerating on Sport mode (on eco is quiter but slower) the noise from the engine complaining is obvious and many don't know that the models from 2023 and 2024 have better insulation then the previous versions from 2021, which contributes to 10-20kgs heavier car weight.
And for that 100% throttle , well lets be real you will be doing this only to impress or showcase the car, i would say Less then 1-5% of the time, since if you want to pass a car in your line, on a highway or uphil the electric motor by itself with 50% throttle is MORE then fast and the engine will be relatively quiet the e-cvt managing the noise, and if you lift your leg even 5% off the throttle it immedietely silences the roaring so you will get used to that play and you won't loose much acceleration.
I cannot imagine how this car is so cheap compared to other ones in B or C segment.
And the looks aswell... in the Sunlight White premium, it turns every 3rd head around, it's just Nuts how it attracts attention, maybe people don't know what it is or there are too few of them... You won't have that in Sportage or RAV4 or Tucson trust me if you care about that.

I've had Hondas for 30 years and this current move to try and up spec vehicles and charge way more ruins the value proposition for me and the HRV and CRV that I currently own may well be the last Hondas I ever buy - at $45K it is far too expensive and agree with some other comments below that it feels more like a good mid spec model

Yeah value proposition is terrible. After looking at the HRV and Cx 30 I went straight for the Cx 30.
Another issue is not enough trim levels or at least allow us to add stuff in such as packages. $37,000 isn’t to bad, little expensive but maybe I would buy it. Issue is didn’t have a few things and the Mazda Cx 30 had way more trim levels so we could pick and choose which trim fit us the best

@@cityplanner3063 I hear what you’re saying, but CX 30 isn’t a hybrid, has restricted visibility from a somewhat claustrophobic cabin, no electric nor heated front seats, no heated steering wheel, very tight and uncomfortable rear seat area, only one choice of burgundy leather seats 🤢, $595 for certain exterior paint colours, more costly on fuel and more expensive servicing….

I just purchased the Honda HR-V Hybrid. Here in Italy it costs €36,000 (HR-V Advance). The Kia Sportage costs more and the Kia Niro and Toyota Yaris Cross (both hybrid) cost only €1-2,000 less but are MUCH smaller. I drove the HR-V and loved it. I live in Thailand, here the top model has the stupid 3way glass roof but u can not open it and can not close the whole thing in once or even electric. We don't get a 2zone AC like u have and sure no heated Steering and Seats. Also, we get the old style Navi system like in the City, i don;t know if u have that in Aus., we also dont get the BSM and we pay about 50'000 AUD. Sick here . I envy U gays , not only for the better HRV... Take care.

Bbbuuuutttttt, I have made emotional car purchases before and if I’m going to spend 45k on a car, it’d want to be able to tow something. I’ll probably end up with a Yaris Cross, especially since someone in the comments below said it’s pretty much the same specs, and that was all I needed to know.
Still, I will miss not being able to have one, they are amazing to drive. Too expensive.

I had a test ride in the car. The drive is fantastic, and the seating position is nailed on(mind you I own a RAV4 Hybrid cruiser right now). But the price is ridiculous. Based on specs and boot size, it compares favourably with a Toyota Yaris Cross. Top of the range Yaris Cross comes at 40k driveaway. That is why I decided to buy a mid-spec Yaris Cross GXL for around 36K. I would have bought this car for around 40k. If it is to be priced at 45k, it should come with leather seats as standard and also sun roof.

    Great review.
But what's happening to Honda's pricing on their new models.
For a $1000 more you can buy the much bigger, roomier, 5 seater and better equipped AWD Honda CRV VTI-L with a 1.5Litre turbo engine.
$47k for no leather, no power seats, no sunroof, no five seats - items that the old HRV VTi- LX had and cost $4K less. And what's with USB-A in 2022 . Look around Honda and see what the competition is doing.
With less dealerships in Australia and only 4 cars in their model line-up, which includes the Accord sedan whose sales have diminished to almost non existent, a new Civic which has priced itself out of the market and has no parking sensors or sunroof and costs $47,200, I can see the quick exit out of Australia will be very easy for Honda Motor Company. Maybe that's their long term plan.

If Honda Japan wants to have an Australian presence then they will need to first clean out the Board and Stephen Collins. Any company that decides it's happy to cut sales by 40% has rocks in its head and the latest Civic and HRV models are ample evidence that they'll meet that target.

Oddly enough, you don't mention the hybrid technology, like the engine charging the battery and only driving the wheels when overtaking or cruising at higher speeds. Around town the battery drives the wheels and the motor starts autonomously when the battery needs a charge. Also with focussed driving, it is possible to get 2.9 litres per 100 Km, which is way better than you achieved, but it is possible. Certainly these points are worth mentioning in your review.

I am currently test driving the 22 XV hybrid overnight (no Crosstrek in Aus yet but XV is the same in many ways). I really wanted to love it, but the engine is so thrashy! The electric engine felt very much like a design afterthought and the fuel gauge reflected that. For a hybrid the Subaru is unacceptably thirsty - 7.7L/100km as opposed to the Honda's 4.5L. I test drove the Honda a couple of weeks ago and thought about how much more refined and efficient it was the whole 60km on the highway to visit my parents.
Boot space difference is negligible. It comes down to your needs, e.g.
the subaru has towing capacity and AWD, the Honda is very fuel efficient and decidedly more enjoyable to drive, with a much more intuitive infotainment console than the Subaru's clunky, confusing system. I wasn't expecting it, but Honda will be getting my order.

There aren't too many options for a small true hybrid SUV at the moment. Two from Toyota, one from Kia and this one from Honda. I've driven all four, the HR-V stands out in terms of driving experience, equipment, spaciousness and practicality. It is let down by the somewhat noisy engine during hard acceleration. I think it is worth 45k. That said, the Toyotas are cheaper and you can't bargain with Honda. There is also the concern about the future of Honda whether it will go the way of Holden.

I drove a 2022 Honda HR-V hybrid for my road trip from San Francisco to Yellowstone National Park. I drove over 2100 miles and I average 32MPG for my trip.
What I like: camping mode works like wonder when I sleep in it in camping ground when temperature was around 30 degree. It was comfortable to sleep inside while the engine is keeping the temperature around 75 degree. Well equipment with technology: lane centering, blind spot monitor, power seat for both driver and passenger seats, moon roof, Adaptive Cruise Control.
What I don’t like: 32MPG is low for a hybrid vehicle. Lane centering is not reliable. Seat is very uncomfortable. It is the worst seat I have tried ever.

It is unlikely that Honda will still be around in 5 years to honor that warranty.
Their sales are down 40% on last year, half their lineup has disappeared, they have closed a good chunk of their showrooms, and that "fixed-price" model they have implemented is only thanks to a loophole in Australian legislation that effectively kneecaps the remaining dealerships from being able to make any money.

There are several reasons Honda’s sales have crashed and burned in Australia. And every single one of them is obvious in the package that this vehicle is trying to selling. Too little for too much equals no customers. You don’t need Professor Julius Sumner-Miller’s theory of why is it so to tell you that Mr Honda! As the presenter talked through the car I had a little wince every time he noted something else that Honda had deleted whereas all those brands that are mega sales above them have realised that meeting customer needs and expectations is a sure-fire way to grab a bigger share of the available market. I can see Honda’s brand new positioning statement now: Honda… you can’t always get what you want! Cue the Rolling Stones 😀 I was a rusted on Honda-owner for 25 years - Honda euro… wow, what a car. Then the brand gave me the one-finger salute and deserted me as a customer. The Australian market is too small to make Honda sit up and take notice of its kamikaze sales line. Hard to understand why the brand is still going ok in the larger markets. But give it time.
